Dear Editor Raglan’s Three Bridges Nearly 40 years ago my husband and I lived in Whitianga and we took our two young children to an Easter Folk Festival on the outskirts of Raglan. We called in at the township, had fish and chips on the Wharf, and then walked over to the then Kopua Domain across the quaint old footbridge which spanned over the Opotou inlet. The bridge was replaced in (2009). Twenty years years later I visited Raglan again where my young granddaughter lived. The highlight was watching her and a stream of local children jumping off the one lanedbridge (Wainui Road Bridge). Having always had passion for jumping into the water from a great height how I longed to join them. Fast forward another twenty years and I did jump off the two laned bridge (Raglan’s Aerodrome Bridge) much to the delight of my youngest grandchild. The three bridges in Raglan have been the location of many events and much controversy over the years not the least the irresistible urge for young and old to jump off them. Leaping off Raglan’s bridges has been a favourite pastime for generations of local children. The plan to replace

the footbridge in 2009 with a higher structure sparked much debate amongst the locals who wanted to preserve the bridge jumping tradition. Today as I make a solitary walk around the three bridges, it’s a different scene but the echoes of happy memories remain, a canoeing treasure hunt up to the Aerodrome Bridge with my grand kids, Dolphin Day, The Xtreme Zero Waste Recycled Raft Race, the Pink Ribbon Three Bridges Walk, Christmas in the Park and the New Year firework’s display. I am sure you’ll all have your favourite recollections. Watching the Papahua Domain playground grow from a few swings and a seesaw to an amazing selection of equipment for all ages including a BMX track and a skateboard park. When life eventually returns to the ‘new normal’ the area will once more ring out with voices of mums and dads cheering their kids on the football field, with the smell of fish and chips wafting in the breeze. We will no doubt treasure the sweetness of life so much more and appreciate what mother nature has given and our beautiful town of Raglan and all its resilient people. Anonymous

Show goes on as Raglan teen becomes a backyard princess
Sasha plays Princess Aurora in her garden.
W go on.
e may be in lockdown but for Raglan teen Sasha Kirkwood the show must
Now also known as Princess Aurora – from the classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty – she’s busy reading bedtime stories to children and welcoming them into her
kingdom, albeit from the back yard of her Norrie Ave home. Sasha dons a wig of trailing ringlets, topped by her crown of course, before putting on make-up and a flowing pink costume for the complete princess look. She then records her 10-minute videos – “mainly (of) singing in my garden” – which play for free on the Enchanted Entertainment NZ Facebook page now that the company’s usual bookings to perform at children’s parties and events have come to a temporary halt. “It’s so much fun,” says the Raglan Area School head girl, who’s always been involved in music and drama. “And I’m getting my face out there.” Sasha and eight fellow performers were asked by Enchanted Entertainment, who she’s worked part-time for since last year, if they’d like to be involved in the interactive video project during the fourweek lockdown. And this princess, who usually plays the role of Ariel or Elsa, was “happy to volunteer”. Enchanted Entertainment says it’s all about “making magical moments” for children to enjoy online while they’re in isolation. The Hamilton-based company has thanked the nine girls for doing their part for the community “at this difficult time”. Some of the videos are streamed live while others, like Sasha’s, are pre-recorded. A Givealittle page has been set up if fans want to donate. Sasha understands any money raised will go towards a celebration of their volunteering efforts at the end of lockdown. Meantime Sasha’s regular paid work at the local Four Square store has stepped up. Along with the 17 year old’s usual checkout and shelf-stacking roles, she’s now also helping make up the recently introduced online orders which are delivered to homes by Raglan Shuttle to minimise people contact. While it’s no trouble to walk to work, Sasha sometimes drives which – as she’s the designated shopper – means she can bring groceries home to her own family ‘bubble’ which includes Mum Angela and twin brother Jack. Around home they’re all doing more together, Sasha says. The twins share a love of music so they “jam” with Jack playing drums and learning guitar while she sings. At Four Square Sasha’s impressed with the lockdown precautions in place – including the wearing of both plastic gloves

eemed an essential service, Raglan Community Radio is still on the airwaves with all the volunteer DJs now working from home, thanks to station manager Aaron Moar. Working furiously in the 48-hours before lockdown, Aaron has used a combination of modern technology, free software, old school radio equipment and good old-fashioned persistence to keep the station on air. “To be honest there's been a lot of experimentation and mistakes on the air while we get it sorted but we've used Zoom or Skype along with software that gives DJs remote control of the studio computer. For those who aren't so confident on the computer I spent the 48-hours before lockdown setting up basic studios in a handful of houses with old equipment we still had lying around. A couple of people are prerecording as well.”

With only one DJ too busy with her job during the lockdown, Aaron says the station is still as busy as ever with volunteers keen for more slots and former DJs offering to volunteer during lockdown, all looking for ways to keep themselves busy in their bubble. Timebank Tuesday DJ Sarah Lancaster says being able to broadcast from the safety of her bubble has been “mind blowing” and all the DJs are grateful to be able to keep the community humming from the comfort of their homes. “The community of DJ's would like to extend our biggest gratitude to Aaron for going above and beyond, working all hours of the day and night to make sure every single DJ is hooked in, set up, comfortable, happy, and read. It's truly a lot of work, and all to make sure that the Raglan community can still have music to groove to, keep calm to, familiar voices to hear, and laugh with,

and key info, ideas and support to get out there to our listeners.” Reaching as many people as possible is the first priority in an emergency and radio plays an important role in disasters and crises all around the world. Governments use radio to broadcast vital information to people who are not connected to the Internet, which can include many elderly in the community. As well as broadcasting information about Covid-19, that is both nationally and locally relevant, Aaron is also focused on the social role radio plays. “If we were to go off the air entirely or lose the voices of our 25 volunteer DJs it would just add to the sense of isolation everyone is feeling - especially for regular listeners. We're working hard to maintain that sense of human connection because there aren't a lot of options for feeling in

touch with our community right now - especially if we live alone or are in quarantine.” There have been a few glitches, Aaron says, especially when the Internet is overloaded and can make it too hard to work remotely. “I hope listeners can be patient with us as 25 people go through a steep learning curve live on the air, especially with a busy internet causing their connection to the studio to drop out from time to time. It's been hard work but also a kind of fun challenge to see if we could do it.” Janine Jackson
Keeping fit during lockdown through online classes T he Chronicle caught up with Sophie von Huben from Sofit this week about how her business has been impacted by COVID-19. She also gives us some advice around staying fit at home during the lockdown period.
Sophie von Huben stresses the importance of physical activity for mental wellbeing.
4 RAGLAN Chronicle
How and when was your business impacted by Covid-19. Sofit was impacted around March 16. Up until this date, everything was running full steam ahead with happy motivated clients. How did you have to adapt to rapidly changing situation? It meant we needed to make an action plan immediately, firstly taking additional cleaning and sterilizing procedures of our studio and equipment. We had a strict 'wash your hands please' policy on entry for everyone and made sure our clients were bringing along their own sweat towels for all sessions along with their drink bottles (a lot of common sense). We utilized training in the outdoors which allowed for social distancing. Each day as things changed so did we. We made decreases in numbers to all of our Group Fitness sessions. I started offering discounted 2:1 sessions for those who felt more comfortable training in much smaller settings. And as soon as alert 3 was issued SOFIT sessions from 1:1 to Group fitness were stopped immediately. We let our clients know we would be moving online ASAP.
How are you finding the experience of online delivery? It is definitely different and not without its challenges. It’s hard to not be there physically training people and makes for a challenge when needing to help make adjustments to the clients form and technique when as trainers we are so 'hands on' with our teaching. But it’s still lots of fun, and feels amazing to be helping keep our community and clients stay healthy both mentally and physically at this hard time. It’s something NEW so we are all adjusting to our temporary normality. It’s definitely nice to stay connected with people. What is the feedback from your clients? Why do you think these initiatives are so important right now? I have had great feedback from everyone. At the moment, like most others since SOFIT started online, we have been offering all our training services for FREE. We are so big on mental health and feel that taking care of one another is where it’s at!. It is so important right now to be there for one another. Some of my clients have offered to pay, and kindly check in to make sure I am taking care of myself and my family also. But for now we keep rolling as we are. These are times of high risk to people’s mental health and create huge amounts of anxiety and stress. If we can help people
cope a little better in day-to-day isolation then that’s what we will keep on doing! I love getting selfies and messages of how my clients feel after their 1:1 or group Zoom sessions - usually all end in sweaty big smiles. What other opportunities are there in the community for accessing sessions with trainers and Yoga and Pilates teachers? Like myself, so many of the wonderful Raglan community have jumped on board the virtual train and are also offering their services for free. The girls at the Space have online live Zoom, yoga and pilates classes even for the little ones and also pre recorded sessions you can follow at anytime on their website. Eden and Raph from Lifted have daily pilates sessions via Zoom. The Raglan Yoga Loft family have been running their yoga sessions via Zoom this last week and any koha received will be donated to someone in need affected by COVID-19. RNR fitness,Rangi and Raewyn are 'Essential' services and their time is needed keeping us all safe. They kindly gifted their equipment out to keep people moving over the lock down period and keep sending motivating and loving messages to their crew. The team at Raglan physiotherapy are also offering FREE telehealth care and consults for the community throughout the Isolation period.
Victory for the ocean: Court rules protecting the environment is a bottom line
An update from the team at the Herbal Dispensary

K
iwis Against Seabed Mining (KASM) and Greenpeace today hailed the decision by the New Zealand Court of Appeal denying Trans-Tasman Resources (TTR) permission to mine the South Taranaki Bight as a victory for the oceans. The Court of Appeal confirmed today that the proposed seabed mining operation that would dredge a 66 square kilometre section of the seabed off the coast of Patea for ironsands, does not meet numerous environmental and Treaty of Waitangi principles and therefore could not go ahead. “This sends a powerful message that New Zealand waters are not open for pillage by seabed miners. We doubt very much that any future investor would now have the appetite for throwing money at what is clearly a lost cause,” said Cindy Baxter, chairperson of Kiwis Against Seabed Mining. “This sends a powerful message that New Zealand waters are not open for pillage by seabed miners. We doubt very much that any future investor would now have the appetite for throwing money at what is clearly a lost cause” “This three-year process has been a long, drawn-out battle, underlining the need for a ban on seabed mining. This is the third New Zealand application and again the seabed miners have lost, at enormous expense to local communities, iwi, environmental groups and industry,” she said. Jessica Desmond, oceans campaigner at Greenpeace, says now is not the time for further exploiting our oceans. “We have to step back and recognise that seabed mining is simply too destructive to go ahead. We don’t know enough about our fragile marine environment and what mining could do – but the science shows the impacts would be negative,” she says. “This particular mining operation would put endangered Hector’s dolphins, blue whales, seabirds, and coral life at risk. It’s a risk we cannot afford.
“Our oceans perform a myriad of vital services to humanity – from feeding communities to providing breakthroughs in medical science. It is high time we protected them from harmful activities. “This seabed mine would have set a very bad precedent for other companies waiting in the wings. Today’s decision will be felt across the Pacific where communities are fighting other similarly damaging huge seabed mining projects.” Just last month, the UK Government committed to not sponsor nor support the issuing of any exploitation licences for deep sea mining projects until there is sufficient scientific evidence about the potential impact on deep sea ecosystems. They also want to see strong and enforceable environmental standards in place before any mining could go ahead. Prominent environmentalist Sir David Attenborough has also warned of potential irreversible harm that could be done through seabed mining. Today’s decision upholds a High Court decision last year that quashed the EPA consent granted to TTR. The Appeal Court decision also upheld several important points of law the groups had cross-appealed on, as the High Court had rejected these arguments. These included: including the relevance of international law, the meaning of the legislation regulating New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone, its object and purpose, the precautionary principle, the relevance of the Resource Management Act regime, and a financial bond to ensure future environmental harms can be addressed. Other possible seabed mining bids could come from companies holding either mining or exploration permits off New Plymouth, Waihi Beach, and the Chatham Rise – where Chatham Rock Phosphate has already failed in its first attempt, and has been telling investors it is waiting for this decision to be resolved before it reapplies.

THANK YOU WHAINGAROA!
With the strong support of this awesome community, we just WON the latest Court battle to keep wanna-be seabed miners Trans-Tasman Resources (TTR) from mining West Coast black sands in the South Taranaki Bight. This time it is a big win - the decision sets a clear precedent that the EEZ legislation is there to protect the ocean environment. (TTR has 20 days to file an appeal). We are delighted; we couldn’t have done this without you. So, in the midst of this most strange ‘social distancing’ time; please, raise a toast with us: to your tenacity, to your love of our marine environment, to your unwavering support, to the health of our oceans. Thank you all. With much gratitude KASM Committee
ICYMI: A to-the-point sign that was put up late last week (left image) that read: "Raglan is in lockdown. If it's not your home, go home ... and don't buy up all our flour!" has been replaced by a new message that mirrors Government COVID-19 messaging. Waikato Civil Defence and Emergency Management commissioned a new sign that reads: "Don't be an egg this Easter. Stay Home. Save lives." in an effort to deter people travelling to holiday hotspots like Raglan during the lockdown.

Method - Preheat the oven to 180 C regular bake and line a small / medium loaf tin with baking paper. - Add the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt to a large mixing bowl. Stir to combine. - Pour in the beer/water and stir again to combine into a sticky dough. Scrape in to the prepared tin with a spatula and smooth out. - Sprinkle with the toppings you like and drizzle with olive oil. - Bake in the oven for 40 minutes – it will have risen and puffed up and be all golden and delicious looking. - Serve hot or warm with any toppings you like – it’s awesome plain with butter, and I like Vegemite and Marmite too! - Once it’s cooled down it’s amaaazing toasted. - Keep at room temperature in a bag or container. It’s not gonna last long, though, I warn you now!
