Te Uku designer shocked at win for ‘toasty refuge’ in deep south

Residential New Home between 150m2 and 300m2 Architectural Design Award: Daniel Friedrich of DF Design-Sustainable Architecture for Twin Peak House, Queenstown

Daniel Freidrich - DF Design.

T

e Uku sustainable architect Daniel Freidrich is “gobsmacked” to have come away from the Otago/Southland ADNZ Architectural Design Awards with a win for an energy efficient home inspired by the dramatic backdrop of The Remarkables and their wider landscape. He’d felt there was “no chance” of picking up the award for residential new homes between 150m2 and 300m2 after scoping the 50-odd entries in that category on his arrival in Dunedin. “They looked really sharp,” he told the Chronicle. But the judges thought differently, praising ‘Twin Peak House’ in Jack’s Point, Queenstown, for its strong connection to the outdoors achieved with high raking ceilings and large clerestory windows carefully placed to take in the rugged peak views. They said the DF Design entry was uncompromising on arrival but opened magnanimously to shared indoor and outdoor spaces. “Fire and ice meet in this lovely home, centred on a spectacular living space,” they said. “The fireplace is backed by a schist wall and framed by custom triple

glazed windows looking out to snow-clad mountains. A toasty refuge in the southern wilds.” Daniel himself is proud of what he describes as Twin Peak’s simple, sharp lines and form, and welcomes the professional recognition for his work in sustainable architecture. “It’s a nice feeling to be rewarded for the hard work and the client is really happy too (with the home which has also had a Master Builders win).” Daniel came up with some creative solutions to ensure thermal performance, which was high on the list of client objectives. He imported from his native Germany triple glazed tilt and turn joinery made of larch which goes with the home’s natural larch cladding. These windows are eight times as thermally efficient as anything available in New Zealand, he says. “Surprisingly, this decision had no negative effect on the budget when compared to locally sourced aluminium joinery, but it reduced the overall heating demand of the home by approximately 50 percent.” Schist – a traditional material that dominates the region – also has great thermal mass properties so it made sense to embed the fireplace into a schist wall in the living area, says Daniel. Meanwhile a fully insulated concrete floor provides enough thermal mass to absorb the solar energy through the full height windows and doors. And an energy efficient in-slab hydronic underfloor heating system was installed to take the edge off during the cold winter months.

Daniel – a carpenter before turning his hand to design – started work on his own rustic-looking home in Te Uku alongside SH23 seven years ago. He knows it was seven years because that’s how old the youngest of his two sons is. He remembers telling partner Erin – now his wife – the date the digger was booked for, while she informed him it was the same date as her Caesarean booking. Their house which includes a “beautiful” office is built from giant redwoods on the property, also incorporating the available Japanese cedar and gum trees. Meantime a new Raglan build, ‘Eucalypt-haus’, has won the exact same category in Waikato’s regional Architectural Design Awards for Hamilton’s Design House Architecture. The judges said the large lifestyle block was an opportunity for a young family to stretch out after years in a tight urban space. The home designed by Design House Architecture director Kris Wilson engaged with the landscape and met with the occupants’ needs for a comfortable, unique family home on a modest budget. The site offered an incredible backdrop of mature eucalyptus trees, with an outlook to mountain ranges and a distant ocean view. The obvious building platform was on the crown of a hill, falling away in all directions. *Regional ADNZ Architectural Design Awards are held across the country from June to August in the leadup to the national awards in Queenstown on October 18. letters Dear Editor Xtreme Zero Waste (XZW) would like to thank Ste’en Webster for his letter to the editor in the August edition of the Raglan Chronicle Magazine. Ste’en talked about the 'elephant in the room' as the ‘management of waste’ rather than the ‘minimisation of waste’. XZW agrees with Ste’en in that this has been the global focus for far too long and has now resulted in resource depletion throughout the world and polluting landfill sites. XZW has always stated that our ultimate goal is to make ourselves redundant rather than build a business around waste. We agree that recycling is a poor substitute for reuse and that is why you see the development of the resource recovery centre shop, wood and metal yards and compost production. It is also why XZW drives the Plastic Free Raglan programme. XZW has always stated that we only want the scrapings off your plate and your unavoidable food waste please. We have shared our own and others’ tips for avoiding foodwaste since the rollout of the foodwaste collection and we always endorse the LoveFoodHateWaste website (https:// lovefoodhatewaste.co.nz/ )

which is fully dedicated to helping people be inspired and empowered to reduce their food waste. A major cause of foodwaste is the way we shop, buying more food than we need, especially perishable goods, for instance bread is the No 1 wasted food item in Aotearoa. We certainly don't intend to encourage people to waste more food when we publish the diversion rates, just encouragement to only give us food that would otherwise have been in the blue bag. Now after two years of food waste collection service we have gained a lot of knowledge about what and how we, Whaingaroa, are disposing of food and who are target audiences are. For instance we know our seasonal visitors are definitely more likely to waste food than the locals mainly because they clear out their fridges/cupboards when they leave Raglan and don't want to take it with them. XZW is about to roll out more food waste avoidance education. Unfortunately our staff resources have been stretched over the last 8 months as we have been trying to secure the future of our food waste collection service through

WDC consultation and now our Givealittle campaign ( https://givealittle.co.nz/ cause/lets-do-this-raglan) and other fundraising. We have worked hard over the last 20 years, with our sister organisation the Whaingaroa Environment Centre, to home compost and although this has been partially successful there is still large volumes of food waste in those blue bags and a declining number who choose or are allowed (landlords, rentals, space available, skills) to home compost. Waikato District Council has conducted refuse bag audits across the District, including Raglan, which confirms that large volumes of food waste and an increasing volume of compostable packaging and contaminated paper is in our bags. This is one of the reasons why XZW supports the collection of food waste (and hopefully soon compostable packaging) so we can divert this material from landfill, minimise harmful methane production and produce compost to support local food production. Thank you Ste’en for naming the elephant and lets all work hard to minimise our waste and stop single use anything. Xtreme Zero Waste

SUCCESS REALTY LTD, BAYLEYS, LICENSED REAA 2008

Mother and daughter foodies Teresa and Annika are the brains and brawn behind the little food enterprise that takes over the spot on Volcom Lane Soul Shoes used to occupy. The pair have put their culinary and creative talents together to transform the shoe shop into a funky takeaway café, mixing plywood geometrics, cool steel bench seats and tables and Annika’s art on the walls and floor. And they come with excellent food credentials behind them, Teresa built the ice cream shop Roll Up into a popular haven for Tex Mex-style food lovers as well as remaining one of the best little ice cream stores in Raglan. “Our vegetarian options at Tex Mex are so popular, we knew there was a need for tasty vegetarian and vegan cooking in Raglan,” Teresa says. Annika, who is a vegetarian herself, has worked alongside her mum since 2014 when she was 15 and took time out for a year to work at Mr Milton's Canteen in Hamilton to learn the art of making coffee. Along the way she picked up some culinary skills she hopes to put to use at Clover. “I really wanted to learn how to make great coffee and it was good to spend timed learning new skills in a new environment,” Annika says.

The mother and daughter duo will draw on the hearty recipes and all-time favourites loved by their family. Adding to mix Annika’s love of vegetarian and vegan fare, the pair are set to deliver wholesome fresh soups, salads and other delights. The soups and salads on the menu will change depending on what’s available but the pair are not prepared to compromise on taste. “We love good food in our family and putting tasty meals on the table is an important part of family life. There will definitely be love and deliciousness in our recipes at Clover,” Annika says. Their American roots will also shine through in the recipes on offer with one of the family favourites an authentic minestrone soup sure to be hit. The formula of cooking family recipes from the heart certainly worked for the menu at Tex Mex with most of the items on offer coming from family recipes. “We know that if it’s a hit with our family it will be a hit with our customers,” Teresa says. Working alongside Annika and Teresa will be sisters Keira and Aria who have also played an integral role at Roll Up and Tex Mex, plus expect to see some of the awesome staff also working at Clover. Clover is due to open the second week of August – serving delicious vegetarian and vegan food Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the winter. Janine Jackson

SADD take message to the big screen

Celebrating 65 Years of the Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade: A monthly column profiling local volunteer fire fighters who dedicate themselves to keeping the community safe. This column is proudly sponsored by Raglan Four Square.

Thirty-six years of service:

John Hart - owner of Raglan Service Station

I

'm John Hart. I’ve been in the service for nearly 36 years.

My family have always been really supportive about the time I give to the service so I don't feel it has affected our family life. I really enjoy it. It gives me personal confidence. It’s a great bunch of people and I like giving back to the community. We have our issues but we get through them. If you want to consider joining the service you should come along to a Wednesday night training and see how you like it. Young volunteers tend to have huge commitments at work and combined with the commitment of fire service training it can be difficult to recruit.

A second Frank Turner! I get to most call outs because I’m so handy to the station here at work.

SADD members share their message on the big screen. From left Jaime Witters, Riley Harding, Josie Harder and Ayla Standley.

R

aglan Area School students are using filmmaking and humour to inspire safe choices on the road. The Students Against Dangerous Driving (SADD) members – Ayla Standley, 13, Jaime Witters, 12, Josie Harder, 12, Riley Harding, 11, Isa Dobbins, 11, Mickey Brajkovic,11 and Malachy Geoghegan, 11 – have entered their short film into the 2019 Raglan Arts Film Festival Awards (RAFFA). “SADD month is coming up next month and we wanted to do something different to make people think about dangerous driving,” Ayla says. SADD is a student-led programme encouraging positive road user behaviours to reduce road trauma with six key messages – sober driving, safe speeds, no distractions, avoiding risks, driving to the conditions and building experience.

If the siren goes off a second time I know they are short or it’s really serious and I get down there

The six filmmakers are all taking roles in the six vignettes to promote road user safety and instead of cars they are using scooters and a lot of humour to get their message across. “We think if it’s funny people will be more likely to remember it,” Ayla says. “We want to make it memorable and use a bit of comedy.” Road trauma is the greatest cause of harm for 15-24-year-olds in New Zealand and speed has been a factor in more than half of the fatal crashes involving young people. “We hope that people will enjoy the movie and take away some good messages.” It’s no too late to enter your film into the 2019 Raglan Arts Film Festival Awards online at Facebook @ creativeraglanfilmfestival or call the Old School Arts Centre office 07 825 0023 – submissions due by Monday 12 August completed films by Monday 19 August Janine Jackson.
