O

ver the last two weeks there have been 5 reported incidents of family harm, five dishonesty offences including burglaries, and three more people being prosecuted for driving while intoxicated. Common factors in fatal and serious injury crashes are – no use of restraints, impairment, distractions, and speed. This is not only an enforcement focus for the Police nationally, but also here in Raglan. Please keep the above four things in mind and we can and will reduce the harm – that is the goal. Mental health is serious, and it has hit close to home for a lot of us here recently. If you are struggling with your mental health or know someone that is there are numerous agencies that are there for that very purpose. Please see the agencies and their contact details below. Crime tip – A loud alarm and CCTV, it is an expense, but a once off and can prevent loss of property. If you need advice, then please com, and speak with us and we will point you in the right direction. Finally, be safe, be kind and remember to look out for one another! Andrew and the Raglan Team

Local trio ‘at top of their game’ named in NZ area school sides BY EDITH SYMES

T

hree senior students from Raglan were stoked to be selected for New Zealand area schools sports teams after a challenging sports tournament in Dunedin during the recent school holidays. Xander Warren – a year 12 pupil at Raglan Area School – “double-coded” by making national teams in both football and volleyball. Meantime fellow Whaingaroa students Jordan Mooar and Alicia Baker, as part of what they modestly described as “a good team” that won all its games, played consistently well throughout the tourney to make the overall selection for the girls’ national football team. The trio were part of a group of eight local students who flew down-country together in the second week of the holidays for the National Area School Sports Tournament, an annual event alternating between the North and South Islands. It was quite a process for the locals even to get that far, said deputy principal Quenten Browne, who’s the team sports coordinator for the Central North Island (CNI) region which includes rural schools as far afield as the East Coast, Coromandel and Taranaki. “Our Raglan kids had to go through a qualifying tournament and coaching

clinic in Te Awamutu 10 weeks before the Dunedin event,” he said. That qualifier whittled about 200 students from the region down by half across codes ranging from rugby, netball and football to golf, basketball, volleyball and a fast-paced ball game called ki o rahi – a combination of netball, handball and tag rugby. The surviving players later travelled to the deep south to contest the three-day Dunedin tournament, taken out this year by Central North Island with the most wins across all the sports. The best of the players from across the country were then selected for a North Island versus South Island derby, and from that the final selections were made for the national teams in the various codes. While Raglan’s star trio have no actual competitions to go on to, says Quenten, their naming in their codes’ national teams is symbolic in recognising they are “at the top of their game”. Meanwhile, year 10 area school student Liarna Barber-Salvation has separately made the New Zealand U16 Māori rugby league team and will play in the Pasifika Youth Cup in Auckland this October. The Whaingaroa 14 year old belongs to the Taniwharau Club from Huntly, regularly travelling up-country with her team on Saturdays to play in Auckland. Liarna is another double-coder as she was also selected last year in the U18 Cook

The Floral Art table at a previous Flower Show

R

aglan Horticultural Society’s Flower Show is back in bloom on Saturday 21 August in the Raglan Union Church Hall on Stewart Street. Shrug off the winter greys with the colours of the garden; from flowers to vegetables there will be an array of colours to tempt you in from the cold. Society president Geoff Pownall says the show draws entrants from all ages and in 2019 saw 200 entries in show. “At the last show we had children entering in the Floral Art and they took out first prize.” Entrants will be judged on their gardening and creative abilities with sections for flowers, floral art, vegetables and a children’s section. Floral art categories include table decorations, Raglan fantasy, posies, beachcomber art and native plant decorations.

The youngsters will be competing for best sand saucer, aqua jar and miniature garden on a plate. For the keen vegetable gardeners, judges will be looking for firmness, colour and quality. Set up for entrants is 9-11am and the show opens to the public from 12.30pm with a gold coin entry. Check out the winners at the prizegiving 2pm. The Flower Show restarted in 2014 after a break of 25 years and runs on alternate years with the very popular Garden Ramble. Celebrating 120 years next year, the Raglan Horticultural Society started in 1902 when a group of local farmers decide to hold a vegetable show. Details on how to enter can be found on the Raglan Horticultural Society’s Facebook page or at the Raglan Library, iHub, Raglan Community House, Whāingaroa Environment Centre and the local schools.

Journalist Jonathan Milne reported that employer groups and the reserve bank were worried that the economy had hit “maximum sustainable employment”. Their fear was that this would lead to wages going up following by inflation rising above its current low rate. ‘Maximum sustainable employment’ is a concept that requires us to maintain an unemployment rate somewhere between 4 - 5%. Elsewhere it was reported that this rise in inflation was bad for investors, and that the reserve bank was attempting to cool the economy down by raising interest rates. If the bank does its job properly they will stop any more people getting off a benefit and into work - and investors will be able to sleep easy at night once again. Employer groups like the Employers and Manufacturers Association are also expressing concern that current conditions will “drive accelerating wage inflation and recruitment difficulties”. Basically this means they’ll be subject to market forces for the first time in decades and their staff might be tempted to look for somewhere better to work - revealing that another purpose of the large pool of unemployed people is to keep workers desperate so they’ll put up with low pay and poor work conditions. Work conditions in New Zealand have actually become so bad that people from the third world are the only ones who find them attractive – which has become something of a problem while our border is closed. Bearing in mind that we’re keeping 4-5% of the population permanently

unemployed it’s interesting to note that benefit rates were set well below the poverty line by Ruth Richardson in the 90s. This was done with the help of calculations by treasury economists Maryanne Aynsley & Edith Brashares. Alaster Barry’s film, In A Land Of Plenty showed how they based their work on Home Budgeting plans developed by the Department of Human Nutrition at Otago University. The university had devised a minimum nutrition plan for families and then calculated the lowest possible weekly budget necessary to achieve that. The treasury economists then set the ‘New Zealand Income Adequacy Standard’ at a level 80% below that lowest budget. Adequacy Standard was meant to determine where the poverty line was in New Zealand but of course it was set some distance below the actual poverty line. At the time the government said that benefits had to be low in order to motivate people to look for work, but they mention they were also going to make sure there weren’t enough jobs out there for everyone, or that people were being put in a situation where they couldn’t feed their families properly. The focus at the time was put on socalled dole ‘bludgers’ but the real point of this was to bring down wages – and given that we now have working families living in poverty in our country you’d have to say they were successful. And for anyone thinking I’m having a go at employers you might want to consider that the process has been so successful at lowering incomes that only the top 10% of our population have had an increase in real terms since this began - meaning many business owners have probably lost out as well.

Weedbusters wage war on pest plants in Whāingaroa

principal) and Ange Prain have done an amazing job there and it’s awesome to see a new lease of life in the work Malcolm started,” Liz says. A recent Whaingaroa Weedbusters’ Expo at the Old School drew in close to 100 locals keen to learn how to wage war on pest plants. “We are looking at inviting guest speakers and running practical workshops in the future,” Leanne says. They are also putting their minds to the next step in the regeneration process and plans are afoot for a community-run native plant nursery. “Weeding out the pest plants is one part of tackling the problem. We want to help our weedbusters with affordable native options to stop the weeds growing back,” Leanne says. With a view to develop a longterm strategic approach, Leanne and Liz are putting together a 10-year plan to collaborate closely with the Waikato District Council’s pest plant management schedule. “It’s really a never-ending plan,” Liz laughs. The pair don’t want people to feel daunted by the problem and believe if everyone made a regular, ongoing effort in their own backyards to catch the plant pests when they are small the problem will get easier to manage.

Christmas Raffle!

T

here is only 143 days until Christmas but now is a great time to start thinking about all the gifts we need to give. Anexa Vet Clinic throws an annual Christmas raffle which helps to fundraise money for the Stray Animal Wildlife Fund. Without the generous donations from the Raglan community, we wouldn’t be able to provide treatment and services to stray and abandoned animals. We wouldn’t be able to give the people of Raglan their new fluffy addition to their families. So the team at the local vet clinic is getting our heads together to come up with some awesome prizes for our annual Christmas raffle. We’re asking Raglan local businesses if they would like to get behind their local animal charity, in providing prizes for our raffle winners. If any Raglan business owners would be willing to provide products or vouchers for the raffle please get in contact with us on 07 825 8390.

hāingaroa Weedbusters’ Weed Blitz saw neighbours get together to take up arms against pest plants in their backyards and neighbourhood reserves. Around 200 cubic metres of weeds, that’s almost enough to fill the town hall, was pulled, hacked, slashed, chopped and yanked out by scores of locals eager to regenerate their green spaces with native flora. Led by Greenslade Road Weedbusters co-founder Leanne Steel and Xtreme Zero Waste Organics Yard team lead Liz Stanway and funded by the Waikato Regional Council Council’s Environment Initiatives Fund, the project provided subsidised free miniskips for noxious weed collection around the Raglan

township and vouchers for free trailer drop offs to local’s who registered with the programme. “Our goal was to highlight the extent of what is an environmental disaster for biodiversity and devise a pathway for collective action to deal effectively with it. It’s been a real morale boost knowing how many of us are out there dealing to the pest plants,” Leanne says. Neighbourhood weedbusting collectives have sprung up elsewhere around town, with neighbours in Kaitoke, Lily St, and Greenslade continuing the fight against pest plants in their patch., “Kaitoke walkway has been on the radar for many years. Weed control using herbicides is effective now but better when plants are actively growing. You’ll use less herbicide and achieve better results. • Offer your volunteer skills to the project – native plant propagation, chainsawing, building, weeding, etc.

What? Maths relevant? - Local business brings Maths to life BY MARIA GRILLI AND CUBA GODWARD - Y10 STUDENTS AT RAS, AUGUST 2021

D

ouble maths first thing on a Tuesday morning is many teenagers' worst nightmare. Year 10’s file into class mentally preparing for the long hours ahead. We've all been there, trapped in a classroom against our will, praying for the bell. Thankfully this wasn't one of those days. This all took a turn for the better when we were introduced to the owner of the Orca, entrepreneur and Raglan local Lisa James. Attitudes instantly changed when she introduced our class to opportunities for using math to make money. Raglan Area School is working with SSEP (Secondary School Employer Partnership) which is a Trust to empower young people and help transition students from education to employment. Over the span of 3 weeks our math class worked with Whaea Lisa, who talked to us about her challenges regarding maths, which most of us could relate to. Although this feeling was mutual she showed us how math could be our ‘friend’. It was really interesting to see how much math we will use in everyday life as adults, even something as simple as putting a price on a burger. With help from Whaea Sandra, Matua Liam, Whaea TJ and Lisa we learnt how

to calculate costs for a business and to add up all expenses to make sure it all gets paid and all staff do, as well. Being an entrepreneur isn't just about the expenses. It's also about being able to sell and market a product. She showed us the importance of quality when marketing a product. Ms James said “People want something they can't just make at home” an important thing to consider as an entrepreneur. In this case the product was food that we were lucky enough to sample on our second to last session with Lisa. We were invited down to Orca where Lisa had the staff prepare us platters of delicious chips and freshly caught fish. Overall we think it’s fair to say that our mindsets towards math have definitely improved and we have started to understand just how important it is. It was such a privilege to talk to Lisa and have her come in and share her wisdom with us. We’re very grateful for these opportunities to meet and interact with locals and we’d like to thank Lisa for all her motivating words and hours of time and energy, also a big thank yo u to Whaea Sandra for being persistent and creative in the way she teaches us.

Opinion WITH ANGELA ROBERTS

T

he ‘Howl of Protest’ event that recently rolled through many of our towns certainly made me pause and reflect. As a person who has been involved in organising and participating in protests all of my career, I genuinely appreciate the depth of frustration that brought so many to the streets. Protests play an important role in our democracy, not just in raising voices and ensuring they are heard, but also to bring like minds together in solidarity. One important matter to be considered by those who organise a protest is, once we all head home, what next? Helpfully, after the protest, Groundswell wrote an open letter reflecting on the event and highlighting some key points. It was a relief to see that so much in the letter is already being attended to. Their suggestion to consider how to include catchment groups in freshwater planning, restoration and protection, for example, shows how the sector is engaging to ensure that we continue to collaborate to find the smartest ways forward. Partnership is important to this government. We are continually working with farmers and their leaders and there are many examples of this. We listened to and worked with industry on Freshwater reforms and just recently made improvements to slope maps and stock exclusion areas based on input from industry. Winter grazing regulations and the creation of farm level emissions pricing system are further examples of where the government is responding to calls for better engagement. We know how important our environmental reputation is, and it will become increasingly important as we seek to improve market access for our goods. It’s essential we stay ahead of the curve and export high quality environmentally sustainable products. Farmers have done a huge amount of work to improve their practices over the last 20 years and some are leading the way in restoring our pristine waterways. But more work needs to be done. We know some farmers feel they are under pressure and we understand their concerns. That’s why in Budget 21 we’ve allocated nearly $62 million to help farmers and growers address environmental challenges such as climate change and freshwater quality. As a Government, we will continue to work with the agricultural sector to streamline processes, boost environmental practice, attract greater returns for farmers and growers’ hard work and ensure that our country is in great shape for future generations. A

n exciting new series of monthly concerts is starting at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre on Sunday August 15. “Live & Local” is an initiative arising from the Ministry of Social Development’s Covid Resilience Funding.

Each concert will feature sets from three outstanding local acts. Featured performers at the first concert are singer-songwriter Joe Wilson, songwriter and multiinstrumentalist Em River and local folk duo Wilkie Mac. Joe is well known to locals for his blend of alt-folk, indie and Americana written with a timeless 70's style. EmRiver will be playing a mix of her own tunes using a collection of different instruments including flute and the African ngoni. Em has been making music for decades, and is looking forward to sharing some of her songs with you. Wilkie Mac duo (Lynne Wilkins and Michael Mackinnon) are longtime members of the Raglan music scene and have just returned from a tour of the lower N

Island. They have just released “The Guinea Stamp”, a recording of a collection of songs by Robert Burns, which they will feature in their set. Performers had reduced opportunities to perform last year due to Covid and the Raglan Old School Arts Centre had fewer concerts. The MSD funding is being used to give local performers a showcase and opportunity to perform, also potentially to try out new material or new collaborations. “Live and Local” is open to musicians (any acoustic or semi-acoustic genre), songwriters, comedians, poets and anything that can be performed on a small stage. Featured spots are 30 mins and there are also shorter spots available. “Live & Local” will be a regular event on the third Sunday of every month for the rest of this year. If you are interested in performing in future concerts, contact Penni: music@raglanartscentre.co.nz Live & Local, Sunday 15 August , 7pm at the Old School Arts Centre. Entry by donation/koha.

Always Learning one of our core values at Xtreme Zero Waste.

Recently we took the team out over the Divvy and far away, on a few field trips to learn from others working in waste, resources recovery and repurposing. Inspiring, insightful, fun, and no carsicknesses! The collections team visited Smart Environmental who do kerbside collections for the Coromandel. We walked all over their giant conveyor belt processing plant in awe (and fright) of the massive volumes coming through. We watched their trucks in action, and learned about their behind-thescenes tech that records everything. The scale of it all was a big reminder that every purchasing choice we make, certainly adds up. And wow what a difference it makes to have the Raglan community so on board washing and squashing, sorting kerbside crates - thank you! Extra kudos on the day to Mike & Jah who serviced all the town street bins in the morning before we departed at 6:45am! The Wood Yard and Front Yard team left at 5am and headed up to Tāmaki Makaurau to visit Waitakere Recycle Centre. The site up there was similar size to ours, well-functioning but with walkie-talkies even! They have a bright colourful education room full of resources and interesting up-cycling that totally inspired our team. We then tripped over to a wood repurposing workshop in Panmure to share kai together and see the interesting toys and utensils they are making out of smaller wood offcuts. Next stop was a giant warehouse in Glen Innes where all the in-organics collection comes together from folks houses to be donated back to refugee communities and those who need it most, the team here were buzzing about their work there and and were stoked to be a part of sharing resources around. Our Kāhu's Nest shop staff are next to go on their excursion to some funky second hand stores soon. Follow us on socials @xtremezerowaste for more stories, zero waste tips and fresh treats for sale up onsite.

Vets golf on a sunny afternoon

t's all concentration for Helen Goodwin as she putts for par on the twelth hole at the regular Vets Golf Day, held every Tuesday at midday on the picturesque Raglan Golf Course. Looking on are regular Vet players, Keith Brightwell, Theresa Wilkinson and Kevin McGarvey. “Vets golf is very low key,” remarked Kevin who was enjoying the carnival atmosphere on the day. “We usually end up winning a prize or taking home some raffle winnings!” Vets golf is played throughout the Waikato mainly at club level, but interclub competitions are also played regularly between golf clubs. “It's a great way to relax, meet new players and sharpen up your golf skills,” said Kevin as he headed for the 13th tee with a skip in his step.

Nurses & Midwives Strike

NZNO and MERAS unions have given strike notice for Thursday 19 August. • MERAS midwives strike from 8am to 8pm. • NZNO nurses strike from 11am to 7pm. The midwives’ strike does not include Lead Maternity Carers (LMCs). Although services at Waikato DHB hospitals will be affected, patient safety and care remains our priority. Anyone who is in hospital, or needs to be admitted to hospital, will be able to access the services they need, including maternity services.

Emergency departments will be accepting emergencies only.

Opinion WITH BARBARA KURIGER

Words do matter

I

f you know me, you know how fiercely proud I am of being a farmer.

As an MP and National’s spokesperson I move in rural communities constantly and last month, during Parliament’s recent three week recess I visited many more from Timaru to Te Hapua. I doubt many New Zealanders would realise rural communities are this country’s second largest city with 700,000+ people. And despite what people are reading or hearing in media throughout the country, they are innovators. So many Kiwis do not understand the skill, innovation and guardianship our farmers apply to their lands every day, in every weather, in this country. That is especially true of dairy farmers who are always seen as the biggest environmental ‘villains’ by critics and the uniformed. We are — and I say this loudly and clearly — the best at what we do — with the smallest carbon footprint across the globe. In February, research showed New Zealand’s CO2 per kg FPCM (fat and protein) was -0.74 — 46% less than the average of all countries studied. Following us is Uruguay at -0.85, while Australia is in seventh place, the USA ninth and Ireland rounding out the top 10 places. (source dairyglocal.net) Our dairy sector produces half the emissions of all other international producers.Yet farmers are being criticised daily across all sorts of media. I often talk about the language people use when they speak about farmers and rural communities. I even spoke about it in the House in early July. Farmers I see, are feeling the immense pressure of rapid regulation changes, as well as the environmental criticism levelled at them. Rural leaders and support groups are being contacted daily by those who are struggling. It’s a heavy burden being felt both mentally and physically. These issues have never been more evident than at the ‘Howl of A Protest’ rallies across NZ on July 16. Farmers, growers and rural folk are overwhelmed by a government wanting more for less and deciding on how they are to deliver it. The clear message was … enough! But any depth of what primary industries were saying to the Government that day, seems to have been missed … by the Government. Labour needs to get out and see how the rural sector operates before announcing whimsical regulations which have absolutely no practical application and don’t connect with any overall plan. Without bigger earners like tourism and foreign exchange students thanks to COVID-19, and industries which could be earning billions hampered by legislation, the Government needs to recognise where its export income is coming from. It also needs to prioritise substantial, and I mean big money, to help food producers devastated by recent floods. These are the people who make this country money. Cycleways across bridges can wait. Meanwhile, in an era where the state of people’s mental health features daily in the media, I ask people to think before they speak. Because words matter. C

ooper Richardson has been playing for Raglan Football Club for two years. Next year his age group start to play away games, taking on teams local to us in Waikato. Recently injured but keen to support his team as a spectator and contribute to the game wherever possible, Cooper epitomises team-spirit and love of the sport. Q: We saw you defending with crutches! What happened to your leg?

Season update

O

nly 4 weeks left in our Raglan Junior Rugby season!

I can honestly say we’ve had a great season so far, the kids have been having a blast out there. We have done some great fundraising thanks to our managers and parents with bake sales, raffles, sausage sizzles - this will help with our end of year prizegiving the week after last game. We would also like to recognise our kids who are playing reps, Gwynne Sheild - Monty Rowe Southern Reds Louis Bidois, Louis Duirs, Max Murphy, Jett Neels, Canyon Overton and Zara Wilson. A special mention also to Tommy Wilson our 11th grade coach and Dad to Zara for stepping up and coaching this team - it adds a lot more onto the rugby week with an extra training and two extra games a week travelling over the hill. A: I jumped off a bed playing with my sister. I had to have an X-ray to see my bones and then got a cast and crutches. Q: What is the best thing about playing football? A: That I get to defend in the goal. Being with my friends and playing with them is the best thing about soccer. Q: Do you support a football team? A: The Seals!!! Q: How does playing football make you feel?

A: Good, excited, it's nice to do passing with my friends Q: Can you describe football in three words? A: Different to rugby! Kicking not throwing Q: How old will you be when you stop playing football? A: Until I’m a grandad because I won’t have enough energy. Q: Is there anything else you want to say? A: If your friends fall down lift them up!
