A message from Raglan Police

From Linda, Raewyn, and Andrew.

Wow what’s happening in our town? Over the last two weeks alone, there have been 59 offences or incidents that police have attended. This is a marked increase on what was previously being reported during winter and spring.

Last two weeks include but not limited to :

• Attempted Unlawful Taking of Motor Vehicle = 11

• Unlawful Taking of Motor Vehicle = 2

• Burglary = 11

• Theft = 4

• Family Harm incidents = 6

The attempts by offenders to steal your vehicles have definitely increased and have been happening all over the town. Some have been from vehicles parked on the street during the day, typically around the CBD – James St, Bankart St, Stewart St, and Cliff St.

There were also at least eight attempts on vehicles parked in driveways on Upper Wainui Rd, with one being successful, and four attempted on vehicles on Lorenzen Bay Rd, all on the same night/morning. The vehicle that was successfully stolen from Upper Wainui Rd was then used to smash through the front of Raglan Roast West store.

Crime Prevention advice – lock your vehicles even when they are in your driveway, and especially overnight. If you can, garage your vehicles overnight. Use steering wheel locks. Offenders will see the steering wheel lock and will go to the next vehicle that does not have one. If you must leave your vehicle in the driveway overnight, use security lighting and seriously consider installing CCTV security cameras.

Stay safe Raglan, look out for one another and be good to each other. Enjoy Christmas and the holidays. Your Raglan Police Team.

Harry Potter: Raglan Theatre Academy work their magic!

On Saturday, November 26, I had the pleasure of attending the first showing of Raglan Theatre Academy's adaptation of Harry Potter. The hour-and-a-half show was directed by Ruth Hare, props by Amy Hanna and all costumes were designed by Maddie Alexander.

Four sold-out shows were run over the weekend showing the popularity of the Academy's yearly show!

Taking on such an iconic and well-represented story can't be an easy task - but the Raglan Theatre Academy managed to embed twists and turns throughout the story and work their Raglan magic on the piece - which clearly paid off. The amount of work that went into the performance was evident, with every detail being executed with quality and thought.

The costumes and props within the show were once again exceptional, with even a moving car included in the performance! Unfortunately, it was Alexander's last year designing costumes for the Theatre Academy, which she had done for the previous seven years. The amount of experience Alexander has with costume making and designing shone through- with many costumes being so realistic that it was easy to forget that there was a student underneath! From Harry to Dobby - every character was spot on.

The acting in the performance was terrific especially considering I attended the first public showing. The number of characters within the performance was commendable, with the stage full of actors on the curtain call. The age diversity of the actors was also admirable; the actors’ interactions with each other made the differences practically unnoticeable until reflection! Having attended previous academy performances, it is clear how they get more professional and compelling each year.

The size of the Raglan Theatre Academy reflects the excellent work that Ruth Hare does with students, who all seem to thoroughly enjoy being part of the Academy. We previously met with director Ruth Hare and costume designer Maddie Alexander in the November edition of the Local Rag to chat pre-performance. Hare noted that some leading characters were in their 7th or 8th year of the Theatre Academy. This was shown through the skill and confidence of these actors, who have developed so much in such a positive environment!

In summary, the show exceeded all of my expectations. Everyone involved in the performance should be proud, as all of the hard work that went into every aspect of the show paid off. I cannot wait to see what is next in store for the Academy!

Small Gestures: Alison Simpson - room #28

Elisabeth Denis wants to tell the stories of the residents at Raglan Rest Home and Hospital. Elisabeth wants to show up for someone every month and bring awareness to the community about caring for our elderly and appreciating their memories and wisdom.

WEL comes aboard to remove risk for yachts

When I entered room #28, her perfect white bob was resting on her pillow, eyes closed, and her mind seemed to be located on a peaceful cloud somewhere unchartable.

Westlife was blasting to the max, consuming the entirety of the room. I swear the corridor was as quiet as an empty church before I entered. The decor was punctuated by an amalgamation of crucifix, countless memorabilia of all sorts, and one lonely Star of David held on the wall with Blu-tack. Half asleep and puzzled by the sight of an intruder, I pressed pause on her black CD player to explain myself.

The contrast between the crosses and the star was elucidated: a Jewish mother and a Protestant father. At the innocent age of four years old, her mother demanded for her choice to be made. The innumerable crosses in the room and the golden Christian emblem on her neck tells the answer. “I had to cope with a lot of things most young girls don’t have to cope with. Religion kept me safe. I pray every night and if I have a spare minute, I pray. I believe that’s what spare minutes are for, to pray.”

Alison grew up in Onehunga at the end of WW2 when the wharf was mostly populated by Māori fishermen. Young girls were forbidden to approach, speak to, or speculate about Māori people; let alone study te Reo Māori. The prohibited world of Māori culture became a fascination for her, which was translated in to her drawings: often depicting Māori symbols and portraits. School was preferable for Alison because home wasn’t a harmonious

place to inhabit. Reading books was interdicted by her mother, for she feared her daughter would learn too much about the world. Despite the rigidity of the matriarch, Alison was determined to pursue her literary urges. The wardrobe was altered to an unseen secretive library, a cavern of silence. She was deeply interested in cultural differences. In particular, the Indian caste system (the idea of the lowest caste crushed her heart with empathy) and their arranged marriages which were outside of her understanding of love. Tragically, she subsequently found herself in the same position: her mother cherry-picked her daughter’s husband, an English man who was eleven years older than Alison.

At eleven years old, in the middle of the night, strange noises led her all the way to the bathroom to find her mother in a pool of blood, like she’d never seen before. The immediate order was to hold out her hands. He was as big as her two hands and wrapped in a caul. She’d previously read about the rarity of caul births that ignited cultural beliefs around newborns who could possibly hold significant powers. The veil was broken with her small fingers and just like that, she helped deliver her brother. Without any preparation at all, it seemed so natural to her. After the event, the only profession she dreamed of was nursing, and that’s exactly what transpired.

Today, Alison delivers daily cursive writing notes to the cook and nurses at the rest home to show appreciation. “As a child, I wasn’t appreciated for the goodness I did, and so I'm trying to break the circle and put more effort in loving others better.”

Yachties

are set for smoother sailing now that a Waikato-based electricity company has come to the rescue and buried dangerous overhead power lines around their Lorenzen Bay clubhouse.

“It was a constant worry,” says Raglan Sailing Club committee member Ross Henderson who wrote to WEL Networks recently, alerting it to the threat under which the club operated.

He pointed out they were continually trying to avoid contact between aluminium masts and overhead power lines in the marine reserve area.

“We were struggling to operate safely,” Ross told the Chronicle. “We had to have a safety person focused on managing the danger every club day or event, and we were weighing up whether to continue to operate.”

As soon as WEL came out to assess the situation and saw the obvious risk it didn’t hesitate to get the job done, says Ross.

The club never knew at the time just how big the task to underground the powerlines was, he adds. The project’s costs could have been in the order of $100,000 and “no way on God’s earth could we afford to do it”.

There were both private properties and a marine reserve area to be considered, he explains, in a project involving directional

drilling under the estuary. This required various consents and approvals as well as detailed environmental reporting.

The club’s now delighted at the results of the completed project, not least of which means its new Quest sailboat – among others with taller high-performance rigs – can get safely in and out of the water.

“We’ve always been about safety,” Ross insists.

Local yachties formed the sailing club 12 years ago after finding their “flagship” Coast Guard cutter – once stored in the Scout Hall shed in Cliff St – was in danger of being carted off to a Hamilton club.

Since then the club’s accumulated a fleet of more than 20 boats including old Optimists for the young ones, newer open-backed skiffs, and Lasers. It also has a chase boat for safety although, Ross says, there’s a need for one with a more reliable outboard motor.

He describes the assistance from all parties in the project as phenomenal, thanking WEL Networks for coming to the party, Bayonne Construction for the directional drilling and Tuatahi First Fibre for installing the optical cables.

His thanks also go to ward councillor Lisa Thomson, Tainui hapu and Ngati Mahanga for ongoing support. “It makes me proud to be a part of this community,” he adds.

If you want to get involved at Raglan Rest Home and visit or even write letters especially to those without family please get in touch with Raglan Rest Home and Hospital.

Because we are — All Under the Same Sky

This weekend the Whaingaroa Youth Movement were back to the Town Hall with their latest and 20th show, All Under the Same Sky.

As if in reflection of the performance, which felt like a break in the rain, the skies cleared and we were offered a gap in the clouds. With the stage roofed in upside down umbrellas, it was as if the performers extracted us from the weather of life to immerse us in their understanding of what it means to live in a world that is constantly changing.

Opening with a sequence to Imogen Heap’s ‘Wait it out’, the first group of dancers used their movements to pose questions reflected in the lyrics, “Where do we go from here?”, an apt contemplation after the last few years of disruptions, but also of those moments in time, especially when we are young, and ask ourselves who we are or what next?

Subsequent music, visuals and choreography suggested the value of collaboration, support for one another and companionship as we walk these questions together, but also the importance of making your own path - for example, though cohesive, each dancer performed in their own unique way, often in pairs or smaller groups using deliberate variations on the same movements.

With “Running out of Patience”, the familiar feeling of being in life’s waiting room was so clearly encapsulated, with the dancers running, but not going anywhere and alluding to the hands of a clock that move forward — only to move back again. Haven’t we all felt that we should be progressing but somehow we’re not, that we are blocked or even moving backwards? I remember this feeling being strong when I was younger, but recognise how especially relevant it is after the recent turbulence we are all now recovering from.

“Burden”, a sequence to Ibeyi’s ‘I carried this for years’ offered a stunning visual image of what it is like to carry the impatience and confusion of living (and of youth), along with demonstrating how the WYM creates community with the older dancers working with the younger. This somewhat heavier interlude was followed by an upbeat, joyous sequence “You do You, I’ll do Me”, throughout which the glowing faces of the audience mirrored those of the beaming performers, who brought so much play to their movements. Even more levity came next with the youngest dancers in their gorgeous sequence that reminds us of how simple it is, to just enjoy being - and that they, our youngest, are still some of our greatest teachers — we must put down our burdens in order to find joy.

The concept of finding the threads of who we are within the fabric of us all and the forever changing world around us was clear through the closing three sequences, as the dancers moved in ways that recognised the changing, becoming and adapting required of us as we grow into ourselves - flowing together, moving as one and yet also as individuals.

The show concludes with an uplifting atmosphere and the suggestion that as we are moved by the weather of living; each of us has the capacity to adapt and choose our path both by connecting to what makes us individuals, and what makes us the same. It’s not all sunshine, but we can make it.

The Whaingaroa Youth Movement, led by the brilliant Patti Mitchley and her dedicated team, supported by an expertly curated soundtrack and inspired animation by Ella Green, manage to express their own experiences - of being young people in this world, and yet cleverly at the same time the experiences, thoughts and emotions we all feel as humans on this earth. We are together, yet individual, we feel, move, and express ourselves differently, but we are all under the same sky.

The festive season is here! It’s the time for giving and spending time with our loved ones. Through the festivities we need to be vigilant of our pets, avoid sharing human food, keeping toxins away from them.

Animals digest and metabolize food differently to humans, some food that is ok for us might be poisonous to them; our pets can also get pancreatitis from fatty and rich foods.

Common festive food that’s dangerous for our pets:

• Chocolate

• Fruitcake and Christmas pudding

• Alcohol and Caffeine

• Avocados

• Macadamias

• Onion’s, chives and garlic

• Pips seeds (peaches plums persimmons and apples)

• Xylitol (common ingredient in sugarless treats sugarless gum)

• Corn cobs

• Turkey skin /pork cracking

• Grapes

If you think your pet has eaten anything dangerous, call your vet immediately.

Things you can do instead.

• Freeze pet food or put treats inside toys for them to gradually eat.

• Walks or playing games with a toy is a great way of making sure they get the attention they need.

We also need to be vigilant this time of year when decorating our homes; use decorations that are pet safe - tinsel can be accidentally ingested and be a costly surgery; make sure your tree is safe and avoid toxic plants (lilies); make sure animals can’t reach/chew electrical cables or lights; be careful of sharp decorations/ornaments, and make sure trees are secure, off the ground, and any presents are not reachable.

Anexa Raglan wish you and your pets a Merry Christmas and a big thank you to Georgie and Iain, they will be greatly missed in the Anexa team and community.

Budgeting for your pet’s veterinary care

In recent times, budgeting has become more important. Our pets are part of our families, particularly cats, dogs, and rabbits. Their care is not optional; therefore, we need to allow for their healthcare within the household budget. Access to the vet, an annual health check, routine vaccinations, dental care, quality pet food, and flea and worm treatments are all high priorities for your pet to live a long and healthy life.

Anexa Vets are passionate about your pets. We want what is best for them. We have been working on a solution to make veterinary requirements more accessible. After listening to clients and considering the items on their wish list, we can now offer the BUNDLE pet plan.

BUNDLE pet plan is available to cats, dogs, and rabbits of all ages from the 12th December 2022. It includes a pet’s key veterinary care in an affordable monthly payment plan for less hassle and more joy. It offers the freedom of unlimited vet visits, and the peace of mind that the annual health care needs are covered, including unlimited consults, annual health

check including bloodwork and urine analysis, routine vaccinations, microchips and NZCAR registration, nail clips, and discounts on surgery, dental care, pet food, flea and worm treatments*.

Our vets take pride in tailoring each pet’s healthcare to the individual pet’s needs; it was essential to the team that BUNDLE did not override what was best for the pet. We had to be thoughtful about what was included. For example, medications have been excluded so the vet can provide the client and patient with the best options for their situation.

Anexa Vets are excited to be able to offer BUNDLE pet plan to our clients. The old adage “Prevention is better than cure” runs true in the veterinary world. A general rule of thumb is the sooner you identify a disease, the better the outcome for the pet – by taking the barrier away from seeing the vet, we hope to drive even better outcomes for our patients. For more information regarding BUNDLE, visit our website, or chat with one of our friendly team.

Aces High at Golf Club

Whenever you are playing golf, it’s always handy to have an ace or two up your sleeve!

As Ken Shea stood on the par 3, 15th hole a few weeks back, he had no idea he was about to unleash one of his aces! The ball sailed over the estuary, across the 135 metre fairway and landed surprisingly in the hole, in one shot!!

An Ace in golf terms! Ken, the current men’s club champion, has won many titles and tournaments over the years but never an ace.

Forming a golf guard of honour his club mates helped Ken celebrate the moment. Off the tee...

Te Mata School students take part in Rippa World Cup

ART ATTACK : Miriam Collins makes jewels out of juggernauts

On Tuesday, November 29, a group of Year 5 and 6 girls from Te Mata School took part in a Rippa World Cup Festival in Hamilton, run by Waikato Women's Rugby.

Teams from different schools were assigned countries and encouraged to dress up in their Flag colours - Te Mata were Fiji. The girls had the chance to meet 2 Black Ferns, Awhina TangenWainohu and Kennedy Simon and play against them too. It was a fun day of sportsmanship, music and getting outside and giving it a go. Go team Fiji!

At first glance, Miriam's illustrative works are a delightful melange of rich jewel tones, animalistic themes and graphic iconography, but she provides lots of useful clues to help the viewer into the work.

“A lot of my art is about the inner life…connecting to nature, each other, our inner selves, safe spaces, reflecting on movement through time and layers of reality. These all really interest me.”

Miriam spent her formative years here in Raglan, always wanting to return to the happy memories of a nurturing community.

After stints studying fine art, politics and economics, and WWOOFing and working around the world she returned here post covid with a determination to commit to the artistic practice which has provided lifelong nourishment.

Her illustrations often come to her as fully formed images inspired by time spent in nature.

Once a vision comes, Miriam puts ink to paper drawing the outlines, uploading this into digital format and filling it with that gorgeous zingy colour palette.

She enjoys working quickly, and is enthusiastic about the process of cocreating commissions - something she engages in more these days.

Give her 7-10 words and she creates a work for you around her interpretation of those words.

Her previous work was black and white and heavily detailed, but Miriam is relishing the freedom of her current process.

“I’ve stopped using black completely [and] working digitally has allowed me to really build that confidence around colour, something which would have taken a lot longer were I working in an analogue way.”

And in the future?

“I have ideas that I’d like to animate at some point, a workbook helping the user connect with nature and their own creativity. And, of course, the idea of collaborating in different ways is really exciting to me. I feel creating is essential, like water, it gives me a vehicle by which to navigate the beauty, mystery and everything in between that life holds.”

December Live and Local

Lawrence Arabia Tours the Developed World

This November, Lawrence Arabia released ‘The Developed World’, a song about the cognitive dissonance of living amid relative privilege in a world that seems to be going to hell.

In mindful celebration of this freedom, Lawrence and his band are touring this part of the developed world this December, specifically the parts whose scheduled Chant Darling shows were cancelled earlier this year due to the Covid pandemic, plus a visit to his home ground, The 03, with his tail between his legs.

We’re up to the final Live & Local for the year! Live & Local concerts run on the second Friday of the month, showcasing local performers. This month’s acts are: Matt Kambic, Wilkie Mac with Krissy Jackson, and The Blister Sisters.

Inspired by such artists as James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, and Dan Fogelberg, Raglan singer-songwriter Matt Kambic will be performing original compositions at December’s Live & Local, accompanied by Raglan muso Brian Wilson for a number or two. If you appreciate the kind of laid-back sound enjoyed back in the day, when records spun on a spindle and a quiet tune reflected a quiet muse, Matt’s your man.

WilkieMac duo (Lynne Wilkins and Michael Mackinnon) are long-time members of the Raglan music scene and have just completed 2 new CDs, due to be released early next year. One is a collection of Lynne’s songs and tunes, and the other of favourite covers. Songs from both these CDs will feature in the set. Krissy

Jackson, who is much in demand as one of the top fiddle players on the NZ folk scene, will be joining them on fiddle and vocals.

The Blister Sisters ukulele group formed two years ago out of a couple of local Timebank beginners’ ukulele workshops. Having played a few parties, they made their proper stage debut in the Live & Local NZ Music Month Special in May. They’re back for their second full spot this month, with a set of mostly 60s hits. They say, “The ukulele playing may be basic, but we promise to look frocking gorgeous!”

Live & Local will resume in February next year (no concert January). Contact the Old School Arts Centre if you’re interested in performing in 2023. Spots are paid and music, comedy, poetry are all welcome.

Live & Local is possible with the support of Waikato District Creative Communities, Raglan Light & Sound and Mark Frost (Bayley’s Real Estate)

Introducing Helen & Cass

Helen West is the hub of the busy Raglan branch. 'Property Brokers are family run', she says, 'It feels like we are all part of that family’ . Born in a small Cotswolds village in England and having lived and worked in South Africa, Germany and Sweden she brings a wealth of knowledge and skill. "I came to Raglan with my husband on the very first day we arrived in New Zealand 15 years ago and now we are lucky enough to live here,' Helen explains, 'I love the beach, the smalltown community, the people, and I love my job.' She enjoys competing in dog agility events around the country and has just passed her full motorbike licence. Exploring, camping and getting out with her dogs are her favourite things.

Property Brokers Raglan 25 Bow Street 07 825 7170 raglan@pb.co.nz

I came to Raglan on the first day of Covid lockdown in March 2020 to isolate with friends, who soon became like family. Shortly afterwards I met my partner and now I am happy to call Raglan home’, says Cassie Meissner, who comes from Halle, Germany. Cassie is one of the two Admins who keep Property Brokers

Raglan running 7 days a week. Cassie loves ‘being in nature’, and what better place to do it. She enjoys surfing and hiking, spending time with friends and family and is also completing a Master's Degree in Business Informatics. ‘I like being part of the fun team at Property Brokers, there is a good atmosphere and we learn together’, she says. ‘I love working locally and being part of the community’ .
