Common factors in fatal and serious injury crashes are – no use of restraints (seat belts and child restraints), impairment, distractions (cell phone use), and speed. A road check point was conducted during school drop off time, and close to the school last week. Sadly, a reccurring theme was speed and unrestrained children. If we eliminate these factors, our roads will be so much safer for all of us. Boy racer activity continues to be a concern for Police and for residents who are subjected to the danger and annoyance of this behaviour. This should be an immediate 111 call to Police with as much information as possible given regarding offending vehicles. Cell phone video recordings are very helpful as well. Some local businesses now have the extra task of checking vaccine passports. No matter your views on the matter, there is no reason for you to take out your frustrations or anger towards staff. Be kind to everyone, you never know what someone else might be going through.

In a thrilling final, three teams became two and then one emerged victorious at Raglan Bowling Club's Championship Triples. With three teams each recording a win and a loss, it came down to a one-end shoot-out to eventually find the winning team. Sporting our new club shirts, Ann Bouzaid and Gordon Mills check out the situation, while Matty Tuhua and Pim Blair celebrate a victory to their skip Bill Bond. Skip for Ann and Gordon's team was Alan Price.

Soundsplash 2022 shifts to Mystery Creek amid Covid uncertainty RAGLAN CHRONICLE

Fat Freddy's Drop play at Soundsplash earlier this year.

L

ocal music festival Soundsplash have announced they will be changing venues from their usual home at Wainui Reserve to Mystery Creek for next year’s event. Facing a number of uncertainties in terms of changing Covid rules and regulations, the organisers said that without a venue change, Soundsplash was facing cancellation. “Raglan is the roots of Soundsplash and this was not a decision we took lightly. However, this move is a

necessity for Soundsplash to go ahead in 2022,” said festival organiser Brian Ruawai. With the traffic light system kicking into play on December 3 and vaccine passes mandated for large-scale events, Mystery Creek offers 114 hectares to manage any safety measures that Soundsplash may have to incorporate. Waikato started the traffic light system at ‘orange’ which means that Soundsplash can go ahead without restrictions on numbers but would still need to incorporate other public health protocols. “The spatial requirements needed to process attendees are very uncertain.

We have a new CVC passport being implemented that has not yet been tested on events or mass gatherings. “In other words, we don't know what to plan for and can only anticipate those breakdowns to solve. What we do know is that we don't have the space available to have a 2, 3 or even 4-step check-in process,” says Brian. In terms of returning to Raglan, the team says this venue change had to happen for Soundsplash to go ahead in 2022. “We hope to return to Raglan in the future when restrictions are lifted and it is safer for us to do so,” said Brian. With the decision signed off, the organisers are now looking at delivering the same Soundsplash vibe and experience at Mystery Creek and hope to develop some new and exciting activations. The team is still ironing out some of the finer details and will continue to update ticketholders through email and social media. “We’re excited to still be able to deliver the event as this was in question with the logistical challenges of holding big events in a Covid world,” says Brian, adding that all systems were now all go - and they are forging ahead with a lineup announcement and gearing up to deliver an epic festival. As the rest of Whāingaroa prepares for a busy summer ahead under the traffic light system, uncertainty and safety reasons have led to the cancellation of a number of local events including the New Year’s fireworks display and the New Year’s Eve parade. Over in Tairāwhiti, the annual 3-day festival Rhythm and Vines has been postponed to Easter 2022 – the first time in its 19 year history that it has been rescheduled.

FROM WAIKATO DISTRICT COUNCIL

T

he Whāingaroa (Raglan) wharf is set to undergo a major transformation in the coming year and locals are being invited on a walking tour to learn more about the improvements and give their feedback. Raglan Community Board member Dennis Amoore says it is the perfect opportunity for residents to ask any questions they may have about the projects and share their thoughts. “This is an exciting time for Whāingaroa with some big improvements to the wharf in the pipeline. We want to make sure all community members have the chance

to find out more about these projects and have their say. “We’d love to see as many people as possible pop down to the wharf and join us.” The improvements will be carried out in the coming year and include repairs to strengthen the existing structure, a new pontoon, an eastern and western walkway, a new look for the wharf including a balustrade, and a plan for the future development of the harbour. Construction is expected to start in mid-2022 and take around eight months to complete. Waikato District Council Community Connections manager Megan May says before spades can get into the ground,

Council is seeking feedback from locals about the projects. “We’ve developed two options for the western walkway, and we need you to let us know which is your preferred option. “We are also creating a plan for the future of the harbour, and also like to hear from people about what is important to them.” Raglan Ward Councillor Lisa Thomson says signs have been erected at the wharf to illustrate what improvements such as the balustrade could look like. “If you can’t make it to the tour then I encourage you to head down to the wharf when you get a chance and check out the signage. “The images paint a very exciting picture of what we have in mind for improvements to the wharf.” Residents can have their say on the projects at www.shape.waikatodistrict. govt.nz/whaaingaroa-wharfredevelopment-project. Hardcopy surveys are also available from the Raglan Library and Council Office on Bow Street or from Soul Shoes at the wharf. Feedback closes at 5pm on Monday 20 December. tanding on the 15th tee on a perfect Thursday evening, golfer Peter Hogg had no idea of the magical moment he was about to unleash! Tightly gripping his 8 iron club, playing a draw shot, he swung! The ball elevated skywards, hitting the green left of the pin, with lots of roll careering towards the hole. "It's in the hole!" Voiced an excited team of wife Lyn, Annie Highet and Mike Goodison. An ace had been scored and an ecstatic Peter Hogg, or Hoggy to his mates, celebrated with club members back at the club house.

Raglan Business Chamber A message from the Raglan Chamber

A

fter many months it finally feels like life could be resembling some sort of normality. The traffic light system is now in place and businesses have the option of unencumbered trading if they choose to enforce the vaccine passport regime.

Dwayne and Kelley with kids Arlo and Cohen.

B

ack in March 2021 Dwayne and Kelley took over Raglan Water as a new venture from the previous owner who had been operating Raglan Water for many years. I’m sure many of you have seen the truck cruising the Raglan roads servicing many a water tank, pool, and new builds. After spending a few months ensuring all the compliance requirements were in place and the truck was solid once again, the truck is now back on the roads ready to service the Raglan community's water needs once more. You will meet Dwayne along the road, he's the main driver and is responsible for all things maintenance on the truck. You are likely to hear Kelley’s voice on the end of the phone dealing with the bookings, financials, and administration. Also, a vital part of the team, and

valued family member is Bruce Tressider, the team’s relief driver, who loves getting back behind the wheel of the truck after years of driving before retiring. Dancers pass exams with flying colours S

tudents at Raglan’s very own syllabus dance and aerial arts studio Freedom2Fly have recently received results for their first dance exams. Sat just days before the last lockdown, all students have passed with flying colours! Results were returned whilst students were at home, where they received the exciting news. Nine students sat a ballet exam in the renowned BBO (British Ballet Organisation) syllabus and eighteen sat an AJDA (American Jazz Dance Affiliation) jazz exam. These all came back with marks ranging from Commended to Honors for jazz and Distinction to Distinction with a Star for ballet. The Distinction* is the highest mark that can be awarded in the BBO syllabus. It is believed that these are the first internationally recognized dance exams to be held in Raglan, bringing the syllabus-based dance community into our own backyard. The students had been working hard with teachers throughout the year to build up to these exams. They attended weekly classes to learn the repertoire and required steps, and to build the technique, strength and flexibility required of their levels. Some made the most of private lessons and intensive week workshops over holidays to help boost their confidence and practice in the lead up to the exams. The dance school received the results late October and early November during the second Delta lockdown in the Waikato region. Students were,

however, still able to receive their marks through email and by phone. During this years’ Level 3 and 4 lockdowns F2F dance students have continued classes through Google Meet, an online platform that allows large group video calling. “It’s been an absolute joy to be able to dance through these tough times together with our amazing students and to have something exciting like our exams and end of year student showcase to prepare for. The support from parents helping their children to sign in - let alone remembering the day and time has been incredible. We feel extremely grateful for our small but mighty F2F community still able to come together in times like these,” said Jess. Freedom2Fly returned to face to face classes, both outdoors during the Level 3 “step downs” and back in their studio at St Peters Hall in Level 2. “It’s clear that whilst online classes have definitely helped to bridge the gap during the lockdown, nothing compares to face to face classes with our students! We are absolutely ecstatic to be back and have been told by parents and students alike that they feel the same,” says Jess. Freedom2Fly is a syllabus based ballet and jazz, circus and aerial arts studio, focusing on bringing the benefits of these incredible styles to the Raglan community. The studio is run by Jess and Jair Ramirez who moved back to New Zealand after travelling the world performing internationally both in dance and aerial arts. Jess and Jair are next scheduled to perform in Hamilton for New Years Eve and in the Auckland Arts Festival in 2022. If you want to learn more about Freedom2Fly and what they get up to, head to www.freedom2fly.co.nz or check out their socials @freedom2flynz.

It is extremely difficult for those Raglan businesses to have made the decision to exclude people (including regular customers or even family). Please remember this is solely for the purpose of trying to keep their business alive and get it back on track. To reiterate our comments from the last article, we ask that everyone continues to be patient with our local businesses while they navigate through these sensitive and trying times. On the brighter side, business is picking up. Of course, there are those that are still struggling more than others, but you only have to go down the main street on the weekend to feel a sense or normality with the early arrival of the warmer weather bringing back the visitors. Local businesses are also preparing for the influx of our northern neighbours who will be allowed to cross over into our region within the coming weeks. We appreciate there is a sense of nervousness when our Auckland visitors start streaming in over

the New Year period, however, please remember many businesses heavily rely on outerregion visitors; not just retail and hospitality, but the likes of accommodation providers, tourism attractions and event companies. The Chamber asks that we trust the system (albeit a challenging one) as a community and be kind to one another including any visitors that come to our town, as many livelihoods depend on it. To keep the momentum, we have two events this week. This Thursday the 9th we are holding a crucial security breakfast event at Orca at 7.30am, which is open to the community. We will have a Risk Manager who will put on a presentation, together with our local police, discussing options to help protect us over the upcoming summer period. To celebrate the beginning of summer and bringing life back into our streets, the Chamber has arranged the “Raglan Fiesta” which is an initiative where shops in the CBD will stay open until 7pm this Friday the 10th. Let your friends and family know to come along and get your pre-Christmas shopping done all while supporting your local businesses, and indulging in divine, local cuisine. A reminder the traffic light rules apply to these events. Enjoy and stay safe. Morgan Morris Chairperson

While many of us can now make the most of sitting down and dining in, some local eateries are sticking to takeaways only, BUT LET'S NOT PILE UP THE SINGLE USE WASTE. Here's how to order takeaways without the throwaways:

Mention you have a reusable bowl/cup /container when you order via phone/txt.

Turn up 5 mins early and hand over your clean lid-free reusable. Smile & enjoy eating real good food from a real good, REAL reusable.
