Local artist gets back to nature for art’s sake

Artist Amanda Watson.

A

journey back into education has brought local artist Amanda Watson’s creativity close to nature and close to a major international art award. A series of work for her Master of Arts (Painting) at Wintec entitled Painting Encounters with the Land is being exhibited at Ramp Gallery from Tuesday, February 11 to Friday, February 28. One of these paintings was long-listed for the Aesthetica Art Prize 2020 and will be exhibited as a digital image at the London exhibition in March and printed in the Future Now Anthology 2020 book due out soon. Launched in 2007, the Aesthetica Art Prize supports the next generation of talent across new visual media and attracts thousands of entries each year from across the globe. “I’m so stoked that this painting will be part of the conversations about our global environment and our relationship with the land,” she says. It’s 20-years since Amanda completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland and this journey back to art school has seen Amanda taking the tools of her trade into the bush around Taranaki and Whaingaroa. Some of these treks take up to 40-minutes and several trips to get all the gear in situ; once there she drapes canvas, some over two-metres wide, over rock faces, parts of trees, plants and other organic matter on the ground. Once in position Amanda applies and removes paint, tips water and repositions the canvas.

Some of these paintings meld together different landscapes, one large piece took shape in bush near Ngarunui Beach, Wairēinga Falls (Bridal Veil) and a favourite waterfall in Taranaki. “I’m working in collaboration with the land, and building up a view of the land and place,” she says. Amanda has a special relationship with both Taranaki and Whaingaroa; her roots started in New Plymouth where she was born and grew up, and for the last 20 years Whaingaroa has been home – a place where

she has grown roots with her husband and children and her art. The 20-years in between Elam and Wintec have been filled with art; she’s held many exhibitions around the country and overseas, been a finalist in many art awards, and studied in a Summer School at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Doing her masters was always something Amanda had yearned to do and in 2018 she decided to challenge her creative thinking. She says having the formal critique of her work by her Wintec tutors and peers was a key part of her growth and development as an artist. “I’ve learned heaps about my practice.” Not one to rest on her laurels, Amanda is looking forward to hearing back about a couple of projects she has applied for this year. Amanda has applied to do a Creative New Zealand and Department of Conservation Wild Creations project in Kahurangi National Park where she could work with the Beech forests and alpine environments. Plus, she has proposed a commission for the Beehive in Wellington and is waiting to hear back about that. In September she will have an exhibition at Atelier Gallery in Nelson, and before that she will continue to paint and show work at her dealer gallery in Mt Eden, Foenander Galleries. You can also see her work on her website www.amandawatson.com. Check out Painting Encounters with the Land which is being exhibited at Ramp Gallery, 111 Collingwood St, Hamilton from Tuesday-Friday 12th-28th February, 12.30-4pm. . Janine Jackson

he new decade of 2020 brings changes to one of our iconic churches in Raglan. Originally a Congregational church established in 1895, this church went into union with the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches in 1943, becoming the Raglan District Union Church. During 2019 the Union was dissolved and the church returned to its roots, being once again Raglan Congregational Church. This new decade brings a new name and a new Pastor. We are now Church @ Stewart Street, still holding our regular Sunday services at 10.00am each Sunday. On the first Sunday in February the leadership was passed to our newly appointed Pastor Poul Andersen. Poul and his wife Wilma, come to us from a semi rural Church setting, Poul having

been the Pastor at the Union Church in Waipawa for the last 11 years. Prior to that he ministered at Hikurangi in Northland, Wyndham in Southland and in Tokoroa! He brings to the Church @ Stewart Street great skills and maturity to lead this church forward into the new decade, with the support of his lovely wife Wilma who enjoys ministering to children. They are a couple who have a heart for God and for the community they are in. Poul and Wilma have a desire to give of their best here in their new home of Raglan. All are very welcome to our services, and we would especially like to invite the Raglan community to Poul's official induction on Sunday 26th April at 10am. Keith Wooderson

How are the children in your house getting along? E R Peanut Butter girls, Enfys, left, and Alaia, launched their business at the Old School creative markets during May.

nfys and Alaia Hewitt are the creators of Raglan’s very first peanut butter

enterprise successfully launched at May’s Raglan Creative Market.

The girls - Enfys, 10 and Alaia, 8 - are nuts about their product and say the best part of the business is sharing their PB23 journey with local peanut butter lovers. “I like selling at the market and speaking about what we make to people,” Alaia says. With their dad Mett Hewitt mentoring them, the girls are about to sell their second batch of smooth and crunchy peanut butter at this Sunday’s Creative Market at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre. “I’ve always wanted the girls to have a little business. Something they could use to fund their uni studies,” Matt says. The peanut butter journey hasn’t always been smooth and some jobs were very labour intensive. Initially the sisters had been doing the shake and bang method to remove air pockets from the jars in order to fill them to capacity, which was taking two minutes per jar.

Arts centre’s fundraising supremo getting there – brick by brick

S

he’s always been a real brick around the Raglan Old School Arts Centre in Stewart St so it’s perhaps fitting that Susanne Giessen-Prinz is busy selling just that – bricks – in a final fundraising push to help get the new creative space finished this year. “We’ve sold 40 but we want to sell 300,” says Susanne of the bricks, which get engraved with each buyer’s name before being used in the paving and landscaping around the new $488,000 building behind the old school. It’s an ambitious project but Susanne – who has bought a brick herself for her grandchildren who she hopes will someday use the facility – is undeterred. The 62-year-old onetime florist turned potter is now into her seventh year of local fundraising for the combined clayshed/ creative space. Arts centre manager Jacqueline Anderson told the Chronicle “Susanne has been the key driving force behind the new creative space and provided the vision for all of us to work towards. “Her drive and passion for a shared clay shed community space has been a force to reckon with.” Among other things Susanne’s organised raffles, dreamt up mid winter soup(er) nights and instigated the annual Raglan Spirit of Christmas Art Show which this year raised a record $9000.

And most recently she’s adopted the novel brick-by-brick initiative by which Ohakune got its distinctive carrot-themed park. While Raglan’s engraved bricks cost $300 apiece, each comes with a charitable donation receipt for tax rebate use. For businesses the cost can be a marketing expense, and there are also sponsorship options. Susanne admits she’s exhausted and can’t wait now to complete fundraising for what she describes as an “amazing” creative space which will soon house the clay shed and Lions op shop work area downstairs, and a performance and movie/ theatre space with seating for 50 to 90 people upstairs. However she’s encouraged by the fact that just last week Waikato District Council issued the downstairs of the building its certificate of public use, even if total signoff for the upstairs has yet to be achieved. Susanne insists she’s been responsible only for leading the “bottom feeder” work, which has in turn cleared the way for Raglan Community Arts Council chair Rodger Gallagher to “reach out for the really big funds”. It all started simply enough with the need for a new “glorified” clay shed, she recalls, with one room for the kiln and the other to be used as a workspace. But a feasibility study showed that a bigger, multi-functional space was the way to go. While the new clay shed and the thriving pottery classes are now in a sense Susanne’s “baby”, she is quick to praise her predecessors who paved the way. Waitetuna potter Claire Wimmer was undoubtedly the birth mother of the community clay shed, she says, while others like Hayley Hamilton and Merren Goodison have also had huge input. She herself took over teaching the children’s clay classes when Sarah Steed got busy with her own young family. “Now there’s 40 kids this term (four classes) using the clay shed,” she says proudly. Susanne hasn’t been teaching much pottery herself of late as there’s always something else to be done for the new creative space, like

Clay target: Susanne hopes to sell 300 engraved bricks in a final fundraising push. collecting by truck and recycling materials from a dismantled Waikato University building – a task that took her and hubby Andreas two full days of work.
