Restoring the road to Raglan

Restoring road access on State Highway 23 (SH23) between Whatawhata and Raglan is urgently underway. This crucial link between Raglan and Hamilton was fully closed on Wednesday last week, following a serious slip on the section known as the Raglan Deviation.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is now constructing a temporary diversion road around the slip site through private property.

The plan started to take shape on Friday, and after the Waka Kotahi team met with landowners, fence and tree removal began. Earthworks will be carried out over the next few days to create the new temporary road, which if at all possible will be two lanes wide.

“We are very grateful to landowners for their generous co-operation, and to Vodafone NZ for enabling us to work within close proximity of the fibre optic cable that runs through the site of the slump,” says Cara Lauder, Waka Kotahi System Manager for the Waikato.

The new temporary road will be raised to protect the cable, which is not exposed by the current slip. The cable is around 600mm deep.

“While we cannot give a firm opening date at this stage, we want to assure the community that every effort is being made to create access as a matter of urgency,” Ms Lauder says.

"The temporary diversion road allows us the time we need to thoroughly investigate and plan the long-term restoration of SH23."

The slump continues to move, and geotechnical testing, including drilling, is ongoing.

Meanwhile, while SH23 remains closed, our contractors are taking the opportunity to bring forward some planned resurfacing work to a steep section of the deviation further west. This work is scheduled to be carried out from Thursday 9 February until Saturday 11 February.

We will provide another update on the expected timeline as soon as we can.

The official detour route remains Ohautira Road, Waingao Road, Herschel Street, Ellery Street, Whatawhata Avenue, Ngāruawāhia Road, Horotiu Road to rejoin SH23; please be careful and drive to the conditions, as it has tight, winding sections.

Deluge creates havoc and divvy no quick fix

Contractors were hard at work this week repairing slips and washouts around the Raglan district in the wake of the big wet that has also knocked out – for the foreseeable future – the town’s principal link with the outside world.

But while the divvy’s been closed to all traffic on SH23 between Raglan and Whatawhata since the appearance of serious cracking and slumping a fortnight ago, there are also other major repair jobs underway within the district.

Cambrae Rd in town for instance is still closed to through traffic as Waikato District Council’s roading alliance group work on a slip which has also uncovered a Chorus internet cable. Any further dropout would leave the water main exposed and unsupported, one-time Community Board chair Rodger Gallagher – who lives nearby – reports on his Raglan 23 website.

Meantime Waikato District Council’s alliance contractors are taking a conservative approach, he says, leaving the spoil in place to limit further slippage. The plan is to install a concrete retaining wall, he adds, with the materials currently being sourced.

Nearby on Bay View Rd a spectacular cliffside slip has left residents “devastated”, with drainage pipes and the retaining wall of a secondary dwelling on one of two affected properties exposed.

From the top of the slip, a sizeable new land mass – peninsular in shape – can now be seen jutting out into Whaingaroa harbour.

Bay View Rd resident Val Burton told the Chronicle she was not home at the time, but that her husband Graeme made a quick exit from their hot tub when he saw trees sliding downhill. About 80 percent of the landslide seemed at first to be on the next door property, she explained, but with more

movement overnight it became shared “5050” by both properties.

“We spent many hours putting in over 500 plants to secure our bank three years ago,” Val lamented. “We are very upset.”

Geotechnical engineers have inspected the site and are in the throes of assessing the damage.

Meantime clearing of slips continues along the coastal road south of Raglan. Ruapuke locals got a shock to see a large chunk of the northern or Swann Access Rd car park, which is popular with surfers, washed out and the road temporarily closed.

Slip debris is also being cleared beyond Te Mata, on the Bridal Veil Falls road and further out along Phillips Rd, which suffered major damage with three-quarters of the road blocked for a time. Locals have since managed to clear a portion of it themselves.

However, it’s the closure of the divvy while Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency investigates and plans its strategy that

friendly professional advice

for friendly and proffesional advice email o ce@webbgould.co.nz

has locals worried most. “This is a very serious situation … it will not be a quick repair job,” says the agency in a press statement.

It has issued an official detour route via Ohautira and Waingaro Rds to Ngaruawahia, but lots of people are still using the Waitetuna Valley Rd route as a “rat run”, Raglan ward councillor Lisa Thomson told the Chronicle on Monday.

This is not ideal, she said, as parts of it are gravel, there are potholes, and a ‘soft closure’ is also in place. Lisa asked residents to be cautious and drive to the conditions but to preferably stick to the given detour, and take time on its winding sections.

The narrow Old Mountain Rd route between Waitetuna School and Te Pahu Rd is open only to residents.

Waka Kotahi is working really hard to get the divvy back to full use as soon as possible, Lisa added, but the priority is safety and long-term resilience.

Raglan Dog Muster 2: Ready for dogs and humans on March 25

We’re hoping for a really good turnout of dogs and humans this second time around for the unique Rag Dog Muster.

It’s not a race, or even a competition – just a great opportunity to join other doglovers on a fun walk or run along a 10.9km circuit – where you decide how far and how fast you and your company want to go. At any point you can turn around and head back to the start at Papahua Reserve to relax and enjoy music (courtesy of Raglan Radio) and a sausage sizzle (provided by Anexa). If you like, come dog-less with a friend (or friends) to enjoy the special experience of being surrounded by happy dogs of all shapes and sizes.....

The circuit heads along to Ngarunui Beach, climbs up to the Wainui reserve, negotiates 2 stiles, and circles around the beautiful Wainui Bush Reserve,

before returning the same way to the Papahua Reserve. (10.9km)

Everyone who registers will be recognizing our hard-working dedicated staff at the Raglan Veterinary Clinic as well as helping fund the work they do rehoming unwanted and stray animals.

Go online (ragdogmuster.com) to check out the photos of last year’s event, the dog and human rules we will follow, AND to register for this year’s event. There’s an early bird registration until 28th February.

Dogs and humans will need to check in between 7am and 8.45am at Papahua Reserve. The Muster begins at 9am. Best paw forward. Woof, woof, woof. See you there!

RAG DOG MUSTER 2SATURDAY 25 MARCH. 9AM. PAPAHUA RESERVE (beside Jo’s Takeaways)

Weedbusting Spotlight: Privet

From Whaingaroa Weedbusters

Privet is just one of many pest plants rampant in our local environment and across the country. It just happens to be flowering now near you. Just take a look around and notice the extent of it. In Te Uku or Whatawhata it’s almost all you see. Native birds don’t love it and move away. Is this what we want?

Kill it by cutting it down as low as possible and immediately pasting with cutnpaste Bamboo Buster or equivalent. Available at Hartys Fishing and Hardware.

Or on bigger trees you can use a 8-14 mm wood bit on a drill, make shallow holes 10cm apart all the way around the very base of the tree and along any exposed roots. Use a syringe to carefully fill the holes with neat glyphosate.

If you want to do either of these methods I can help provide some resources.

Trouble shooting:

• Choose a fine day ( if you can find one !)

• If you cut without pasting they will sprout and you have a bigger mess.

• If you cut them down and leave a tall stump they will resprout even with paste.

• If you don’t apply paste within 30 secs the tree starts to seal the cut and the product won’t work as well.

• If you don’t drill around the whole tree little bits will survive.

They’re resistant to clumsy applications, not called pest plants for nothing. Sure there’s some folk who like privet. But the tide will turn if enough people take action to remove them. Whaingaroa Weedbusters is not an organisation with a labour force, just one person (Leanne Steel) providing some awareness via Facebook and people doing their thing individually and collectively.

NZ Surfing Nationals Interview with Alani Morse

The Raglan Chronicle chats to Alani Morse about her recent surfing achievements at the National Champs held at Piha in January. Alani is a Raglan Area School student and is part of a young crew of surfers that have had a great result at this year's national surfiong championships.

Tell us about the national competition experience

This was an experience that I will never forget. There was so much to learn and grow from as a young surfer. I surfed in 3 divisions during the week, Open women’s, under 16 girls and u14 girls which make a super busy week so managing yourself is extremely important. There were many struggles like surfing against some of my best friends and getting stung by a jellyfish moments before my under 14 girls final which made it super hard to keep calm and focus. The pain was so intense. I gathered myself 15 minutes before my next final which was under 16 girls. I was super stoked personally

with myself, getting two nines during the week. One of the 9’s was in the first minutes of my under 16 girls finals which was so exciting. I was also stoked to make the semi finals in the Open Women’s and surfing against some incredible female talent.

How does it feel to have secured the U16 national title?

I had no expectations of winning the title as there were so many amazing surfers in that division who were very determined to win so they could take a spot in the ISA world junior surfing champs. Being 12 years old I had no pressure on myself to win; I was just peaceful, surfed hard and left it in God’s hands.

Paddling out to my final heat I was still in pain from being stung on the neck by a jellyfish. With no expectations my heat started and a bomb left hand wave three times over my head came my way. I just went for it and managed to get two big hits, scoring a nine point ride which was the best feeling and then backing it up with a 5.6 to secure my victory. Best feeling ever to win this title; I was pinching myself for days afterwards. I feel so humbled to take these memories with

me as a reminder of the feelings I felt being lifted up the beach.

When did you start surfing and who supported you?

I started surfing as a toddler. I loved the water so much and forced my Dad and Mum to take me out every weekend. Ever since I was very young my parents, older brother Theo, grandparents, aunty and uncles and friends all supported me and my dreams of becoming the best surfer I could be. I've had incredible support from the Raglan community and am so grateful to have these legends in my corner.

I’m sure there is more success to come. What is the goal for 2023 and beyond?

This year my goals are to train harder working on air surfing, tube riding, and overall surfing better on small or big waves. For my future goals I would love to represent New Zealand in the Olympics, even make it to WSL and see how far I can get.

I have a massive craving to ride amazing barrels, I want to surf them just as good as the men do if not better ;).

Tom Rodwell and Storehouse live at The Yard, Feb 17th

ART ATTACK : Knuiman, a new man for the ages

CultAuckland calypsoblues party band, Tom Rodwell & Storehouse hit Raglan, with the iconic reggae vinyl expert Dubhead in tow, playing Friday 17th February from 7pm, with tickets available from Under the Radar. "Singer/guitarist Tom Rodwell’s extraordinary revision of blues and gospel always gets the joint jumping," says Metro magazine.

Roots guitar music is rarely as evocative as on Tom Rodwell’s "Wood & Waste", an album that moves easily between raw pre-rock structures and darkly sensual grooves, just as his onstage group Storehouse speaks a secret language of rhythm & blues - vivid, propulsive and uncommon.

Although the LP charted on US radio (notching up 7 months of rotation), gained international media coverage and secured distribution with the legendary Cargo Records UK, "Wood & Waste" flew mostly under the radar in New Zealand, launching just as Omicron washed ashore.

The album was tracked and mixed with no computers at all, entirely on analogue tape at Neil Finn's Roundhead Studios, with mastering and vinyl lacquer-cutting by legendary LA engineer Kevin Gray. This all-

analogue approach ensured the album has been picked up by audiophile specialists such as Groovy Wax (London) and Elusive Disc (US).

The Listener’s Graham Reid was one who did take note of the record, naming it one of his top albums of the year. “The subtle and supple shapeshifting Wood & Waste reveals depths and delights at every turn,” he wrote.

Consequently, a much-anticipated 14-date NZ concert series over late summer seeks to redress the balance, trafficking rolling and tumbling treatments of "Wood & Waste" material, alongside new tunes from recent tape studio sessions, stretches of improvisation and sacrilegious dives into a greasy barrel of calypso and gospel obscurities.

“We’re pleased to be able to bring it all to a lot of different towns this time,” says Rodwell. “The live experience is a special one, and we aim to make each night a distinct kettle of fish.”

Rodwell has toured internationally since 2003 solo and with Storehouse, and has supported the likes of Derek Trucks, John Butler Trio, Otis Taylor, Son of Dave and Trinity Roots. He's an established producer and session man also, appearing extensively on Don McGlashan's top 10 NZ 2016 record "Lucky Stars".

Friday February 17 - The Yard / Raglan

Painter Ziggy Knuiman had been bubbling away for years in the vat of his artist friends group. It was a trip to Europe where, whilst enduring the interminable waiting for planes, trains and automobiles, he put pen to paper at last and allowed the creative outpourings to come forth.

The Raglan Area School Surf Academy graduate grew up at Ruapuke; horse riding, surfing and skating. He hasn’t let his lack of formal art training hold his artistic endeavours back.

Taking the plunge at the beginning of 2020, Knuiman exhibited and curated a sell-out group show Brain Funk as one half of Acid Mince with Seb Hart and another upcoming artist Annika Clover at the Old School Arts Centre.

Another group exhibition called Inner Space followed at Chris Meek’s Studeo gallery in 2021, once again with Seb and Annika, and adding fellow emerging artists Korrin Bevan and Ciaran Lannon into the mix.

“Shout out to my favourite artists - friends Korrin, Annika, Ciaran and Seb. We’ll have yearly shows together forever I reckon - getting together for the pure joy of it. And to Chris Meek for believing in us!”

Looking for a bit more action, Knuiman moved to Auckland last year and has been steadily devoting himself to his practice, putting in the mahi and keeping himself focused on developing his painting skills.

Preferring to allow his subjects to evolve on the canvas, Knuiman finds pleasure in the physical action of creating, allowing the process to carry him along until he feels satisfied.

“I think about composition mostly; I'll start with a stick man and give it a life and meaning and see how it goes. Seeing subconscious ideas slowly come to life is so fun, and I feel like by allowing the layers of paint to evolve I'm opening myself up to so many happy mistakes,” he says.

“I’ll keep changing it up in the future, but right now I'm really focusing on honing my craft. YouTube is my best friend. It’s so mean to have free tutorials available as a self-taught

artist. And I'll also be using it to learn to weld the frames to stretch my large canvases for our winter 2023 show.”

Deriving inspiration from podcasts and music, Ziggy uses acrylic house paint, spray, and poster paint on large unstretched canvases to create his surreal figurative works.

“Live music, skateboarding, and being with friends all sustain my creative practice,” as does keeping his time in the studio structured 9-5, five days a week.

“This is me. Art is the only thing I’ve found so far that keeps me excited and curious. I’ll be doing this for the rest of my life, I hope. Sometimes I question why I'm doing this, financially; it's definitely a real struggle being an artist in NZ - all the advice I'm getting is that I need to go overseas to sell the work I'm making.”

As for that elusive career as an artist, with a solid work ethic and a healthy approach to making art Ziggy Knuiman is definitely one to watch.

Gift endangered flowers for Valentine’s Day

Instead of buying red roses this Valentine’s Day, Raglan locals can gift one of Aotearoa’s most endangered and beautiful flowering plants, the Tairawhiti Ngutukākā (also known as kākābeak).

“There were once only around one hundred ngutukākā left in the wild, but thanks to our team of amazing volunteers we planted over 800 last year,” says Graeme Atkins, Founder of Tairāwhiti Ngutukaka.

“Everyone should know the stunning beauty of ngutukākā in the wild, as our tīpuna used to see them. We need your help to grow more seedlings and establish these taonga

species not just in our gardens but into our native forests.”

For just $50 - much less than the price of a dozen red roses - you can plant five of these taonga and treasured species. You can show someone you love them and the planet too.

“This Valentine’s Day we are asking you to give something really meaningful and share the aroha” says Stu Muir, Chair of the Endangered Species Foundation. “We want to reclaim Valentine’s Day for our most endangered species so we can all give back and help our most endangered species survive and thrive.”

Your donation will help plant more of these treasured plants and in return you will

receive a beautiful Valentine’s e-card to gift to someone you love.

The ngutukākā / kākābeak once flowered across the whole East Cape but now it is one of our most endangered plants. You can read more about how Maori-led kaitiakitanga is reviving Tairawhiti Ngutukaka - East Coast Kakabeak here.

Donations

Koha can be given via the Endangered Species website here: https://www. endangeredspecies.org.nz/gift-ngutukaka

We are aiming to raise $30,000 which would enable us to plant 3,000 ngutukākā. Your donation will go towards:

• Growing seedlings and plants

• Educating people on how to grow and plant Ngutukākā

• Buying equipment to transport, dig and manage plant sites

• Paying for a coordinator to educate and engage kura, marae and members of the public on what needs to be done to save this rare species

• Expanding this programme to other areas in Tairawhiti / East Cape

• Communicating what needs to be done for endangered species and their habitats

2023 Census to help shift outcomes for Māori

From Census NZ

Whāingaroa residents, census 2023 is on 7 March and a major focus for the 2023 Census is ensuring it delivers for iwi and Māori, having taken valuable lessons and partners’ feedback on board, Stats NZ said today.

The census collects iwi and Māori data for the whole country, which is used by iwi and government for policy and planning purposes and for future developments. The census is the main source of iwi affiliation data and the only way to understand how many people speak te reo Māori.

“Data collected in the census has the potential to create a real and positive difference for whānau, hapū, and iwi,” said Simon Mason, Deputy Government Statistician and Deputy Chief Executive Census and Collection Operations

“We did not deliver well enough for Māori and iwi in the 2018 Census, including

consulting and engaging on how data was collected and how we could have supported Māori to participate.

“Stats NZ is committed to being a responsible Te Tiriti partner. I am confident that the 2023 Census has been designed to address issues of the previous census and produce positive outcomes for Māori.”

Initiatives to strengthen the voice of and for Māori in the 2023 Census have been implemented at the governance and operational levels, as well as through engagement and communications for the 2023 Census.

“The presence of Data Iwi Leaders Group (a mandated sub-group of the Iwi Chairs Forum) on the Census Programme Board, regular advice from external advisors Te Taumata Whakaritenga Māori rōpū, and a dedicated 2023 Census Te Ao Māori team have all provided important input to census decisions,” said Mason.

“We have welcomed the opportunity to work with the Data Iwi Leaders Group and iwi to support the delivery of Te Mana Whakatipu, which will see iwi-led collections for census trialled for the first time in three locations (in Te Tai Tokerau and Tairawhiti, and with Te Whānau ā Apanui)

Additionally, a range of changes have been made to improve the census experience for Māori:

• Twice as many census engagement staff than in 2018, with more than half being Māori, are working locally with Māori and community organisations and iwi, supporting awareness of and participation in census.

• A Māori-first design approach for the 2023 Census marketing campaign is ensuring census messaging will reach Māori and priority response groups across the country. The census visual identity has been specifically designed to deliver an inclusive census.

• It will be easier to take part in the census, with everyone having the choice to complete the census online or on a paper form. It will also be easier to enter iwi affiliation information on the online form, and a new iwi map will make it easier to answer this question.

• A commitment to supporting the use of te reo Māori has been delivered through a fully bilingual census website, bilingual census forms, and other support (including telephone support) available in te reo Māori.
