A message from local Police

R

aglan police have arrested a man in relation to a spate of night-time commercial and residential burglaries in the town. The burglaries targeting commercial and residential homes happened over a two-week period between December 15 and 31 last year. Goods including floor sanders, sound systems, a motorbike, outboard engine, assorted jewellery and cash were taken from the shops and bars, along with three residential properties. None of the occupants were at home at the time of the burglaries, which happened in the early hours of the morning. Raglan police have been undertaking extensive enquiries over the holiday period and last week executed two search warrants and located a significant amount of property. As a result, a 19 year old man has been charged in relation to six of the

burglaries and will appear in Hamilton District Court at a later date. “We understand this type of criminal offending has a huge impact on residents and commercial business owners in Raglan. Not only is it the violation of their homes but the loss of goods and income as a result,” Sergeant Hayden Martin said. “We want to reassure the community that we have been working diligently to execute these warrants and to recover the stolen property while holding those responsible to account through the courts.” Martin said investigations were still continuing and police are not ruling out further arrests and charges. Police have been able to reunite some of the stolen property with owners, but are still looking to locate the owners for some items. If anyone recognises the items attached to this post they are asked to call police via 105 or via Crimestoppers.

or a relatively small bowling club, in terms of competitive bowlers, Raglan pulled out all stops on Saturday 9 January when three teams competed in the Waipa Tournament. The senior men’s team of Ross Turner, Bill Bond, Colin Bouzaid, Denis Pizer, Ian Latham and Jack Peel travelled to Otorohanga to compete for the Vagg Cup, while our Junior mixed team of Danni Wood, Brenda Waters, Rob Pipe, Alan Price and Maurice Pruden did us proud at Te Kuiti, coming second in the Myers Club. Here at home, women from seven clubs played on a superb surface for the Hastie Cup. Our team of Heather Dalbeth, Eileen Stephens, Anne Bouzaid, Maws Wahanga and Sue Kingi taking third place among tough competition. And in a fiercely-competed game, on 19 December Pim Blair prevailed over Jack Peel to take out the mixed handicap singles competition.

We continue to enjoy visits to the green by holiday-makers and have a supply of bowls available for visitors to use. Roll-ups are held each Wednesday and Saturdays at 1 pm. Visitors are welcome to join in.

razy cows smoking, moondogs with incense and a caterpillar in Nirvana are just a few of the fantastical clay creations set to go on show at Raglan Old School Arts Centre in just over a fortnight, when a fresh wave of visitors are expected in town for Auckland Anniversary Weekend. Called ‘Pipe Dreams’, it will be a “playful, out-of-this world” exhibition of intricate pipes and whistles, says organiser Susan Flight. The renowned ceramic artist normally shows a culmination of artists’ works downtown every two years. But this time around the show is a year late because Covid-19 made getting together last year – at her Mountain Dreaming Arts Workshop on the slopes of Mt Karioi – a lot more difficult for the nine participating artists who come from Auckland, Coromandel, Hamilton, Pirongia and Raglan.

The upside however, says Susan, is that their creations have “gone really wild”. They’ve had more time to explore the possibilities and that has resulted, all up, in 90 pieces of work based on the unusual subject matter.

representing the rare circular spot found

Although the pottery group always “starts seriously” with an idea for each new exhibition, it’s only a theme to work around and they can explore areas that relate, Susan explains. So there’s everything from ceramic plaques of different weeds that can be smoked from pipes through to “stunning” clowns or birds and lizards resting in the warmth of pipes.

The dirty job of cleaning up coastal waste

Des Watson is on a one-man mission to clean up the country's beaches.

I

t’s a dirty job but someone’s got to do it should be Des Watson’s catchline for his one-man mission to clean up the country’s beaches. Des has been getting stuck in around Raglan for the past few months and like everywhere else he’s been it’s not a pretty or easy job. If it was gold, the plastic he’s found behind the information centre alone would have made him rich. “Not many people go down there. If I didn’t go walking down there, I imagine that microplastic would be there for years to come.” Des started his circumnavigation of Aotearoa collecting rubbish after

receiving a small inheritance from his father’s will. From Westport originally, he quit his job on January 1, 2019 and headed south along the coastline to Karamea in the van he kitted out with some of the inheritance money. He estimates he collected around 15 tonnes of waste during the ten months of his South Island mission. Like most surfies, Des has an affinity with the ocean and felt driven to do something after reading about the damage plastic waste does to marine life and witnessing it on a daily basis.

Micro plastics picked up from the estuary behind the information center. "I've seen a lot of rubbish in the ocean over the years and I just wanted to do something more than what I had been doing.” Spending up to eight hours a day picking up other peoples’ trash, Des treats his mission like a fulltime job. Relying on the generosity of friends and family and sometimes strangers for a bed, shower and meal, Des also has a Givealittle page to help fund the journey. Once lockdown hit the donations dried up and he was forced to go on a benefit.

He hasn’t let that stop him, there’s been worse obstacles of the rubbish-kind that he’s faced on his travels, including tonnes of debris from landfill scattered down the Fox River. He spent five weeks on that job. “The riverbed was lined with plastic, rubbish and chemical waste,” he despairs. Sharing his experiences on his Facebook and Instagram pages Kiwis Clean Aotearoa, Des has collected trash from some of New Zealand’s most picturesque spots; from inner city to hard-to-reach beaches the rubbish is always there.

He’s on the last leg of his journey now, heading to the East Coast starting at Wairoa up to Cape Reinga. Des says he’s grateful to the kindness of Raglan for making his mission a little lighter. “Massive thanks to Neil from Raglan Shuttle Transfers, Taxi and Tours and Hope Phillips from Raglan Beauty for hosting me while I was in Raglan. And big thanks to Gila Cohen and Carmel Theresa who both came out to help me do some clean ups in the area.” Janine Jackson

The brain controls the way we move, so if we want to change the way we move we need to work with the brain. Neuromuscular reprogramming is the name given to this approach. These reflexes create habitual muscular contractions, which we cannot voluntarily relax. The result is stiffness, soreness and a restricted range of movement….
