Chief enabler steps up to the Xtreme Zero Waste plate

Introducing Xtreme Zero Waste's new GM, Dallas Butler.

X

treme Zero Waste’s new general manager core business Dallas Butler describes his role as enabling the organisation to push ahead in new directions.

the core business load off Rick Thorpe and Cheryl Reynolds as they forge ahead with new innovation projects. He knows that all these and future projects will require dollars, something Xtreme doesn’t have a lot of as a not-forprofit working towards a circular economy model. Dallas says they often start out on the back foot financially. “The community might think we are doing really well here; they may not understand our costs. We are not profitable and we reinvest what we do make back into developing the organisation and our people.” Investments like the food waste collection that had buy in from Waikato District Council and the Ministry for the Environment. Despite WDC’s 2018-24 Waste Minimisation and Management Plan proposed vision to make zero waste and resource recovery an integral part of the community, they withdrew critical food waste funding after a poorly worded survey found that people loved the idea but didn’t want to pay a targeted rate for the service.

Xtreme is now looking to fund raise $120,000 including $30,000 through crowdfunding platform Give-a-little for the food waste service, and Dallas says they are determined to keep it going. “It doesn’t make sense to start, and stop and start the service again.” He started the role over a month ago now and has spent the time listening, observing and having conversations with the XZW team. He’s enjoyed looking out at the action from his office and seeing how the place operates. “I’m the new guy here and I’m just getting an understanding of how the staff go about their day-to-day business. I’ll be looking at how I can make their job easier. If I’ve got happy people working here, I’m winning,” he says. Moving from a recent corporate role within the construction industry in Auckland, Dallas was looking for a role to feed his soul. He’d had enough of bottom financial lines being the core drivers of business and liked what he saw at Xtreme. And, he says, Xtreme offers that in bucketloads. With zero waste, environmental impact, job creation and circular economies at the core of Xtreme’s business, the new job is providing Dallas with many bottom lines to manage, develop and grow. Describing himself as a ‘father on his own’, Dallas has made the move with his 15-year-old son Jahli who has joined him after completing the school term at Auckland and starts at Raglan Area School next term. “I was pretty lucky to find a place to rent. I took it without having seen it,” he says. Raglan feels more like home, from Raukokore - Waihau Bay originally, Auckland was never going to be home for the East Coast boy. “Auckland was so far removed from my roots and upbringing.” And it helps that Whaingaroa offers all the activities that he loves – surfing, diving, fishing, hunting and as he says, just getting out in the natural environment. He took a seven months off from his last role before he made the decision to go for the job at Xtreme. Spending the time and investing in his son was invaluable. “I was a professional pain in the arse to my son, apparently,” he laughs. Visit givealittle.co.nz/cause/lets-dothis-raglan to keep diverting household food waste from the landfill. Janine Jackson

Spring boarding off Xtreme’s solid foundation in the social enterprise arena, Dallas hopes to inject some professionalism and efficiency into the not-for-profit organisation “I want to lift our game…all the ingredients are here.” Lifting the game will mean lobbying local and national politicians, businesses and funders to take note of what Xtreme is doing in a space that is making a difference to climate change. Dallas says he’s well up for the game. Dressed comfortably in his XZW hoodie, he laughs, “I enjoy putting on a shirt and advocating our space to the politicians and businesses when needed.” As Xtreme’s ‘chief enabler’, Dallas believes that increased professionalism and efficiency will have a flow on affect, supporting the organisation as it innovates and adapts to the changing political and environmental landscape. And change is afoot with the wood yard being developed into a community shed space, with the potential to provide upcycling and Served with garlic ciabatta V Can be GF mending workshops, and an onsite community tool library. Celebrating 25 years of Raglan Community Radio

Octogenarian captain of the Raglan airwaves isn’t setting sail quite yet

Raglan Community Radio DJ Eddy Cross aka Captain Pugwash.

H

e’s 83 next month but Eddy Cross – better known to local

listeners as The Captain – isn’t planning to weigh anchor on his weekly Raglan Community Radio slot for a good while yet.

“God willing”, Eddy reckons he’ll carry on commuting over the divvy every Tuesday for the best part of another year to present The Pugwash Show, which he puts together during his weekends at the Te Rapa retirement village where he and his wife now live. By next May, says this one-time Londoner who lived down Kaitoke Bay way for 16

years, he’ll have notched up 20 years on air. “Then I will hang up my microphone and hand it over to a younger DJ.” It was in May 2000 that Eddy did his first stint for Raglan Radio, back when it was 96.6 on the dial, and he’s never missed a beat. Eddy recalls it all came about coincidentally, “by default one might say ... My daughter Julia came to me to say that one of her friends could no longer be a DJ and did I know anyone to take her place.” In those early days of the new millennium local community radio broadcast downtown from the exact spot where Kapiti ice-cream is now sold, he says. The station studio then moved up to the town hall, where it’s become a permanent fixture. “Early on I would use only a few CDs and mostly music tapes, but I decided to use more CDs – as they allow you to select the odd track – and music from the station’s computer which holds thousands of songs to choose from.” Says Eddy, a music buff from way back: “I have loved being a DJ here in Raglan over the years and get such a buzz each week. “We have an open door so people are able to pop in. I have met so many overseas visitors and locals, and hear where they hail from and how they love Raglan.” The Pugwash Show features classic hits and golden oldies from the 50s through to the 70s. “That’s my era,” says The Captain. “It’s what I know and what I like. But I do play

the latest stuff too from old rockers like Rod Stewart, Elton John and Mick Jagger.” Eddy got the nickname Pugwash – the fictional pirate from a series of British children’s comic strips and books – some years ago from a friend who saw him in his prized sailing dinghy. Raglan’s Captain Pugwash however is proud to say he’s also diversified and in 2009 got to interview for the station a real captain, Pete Bethune, when the Kiwi skipper of biofuel boat Earthrace motored into Whaingaroa Harbour. He’s also had the pleasure of interviewing 26 local identities – from Rangi Kereopa to Queenie Tukiri, the late Lorna Lusty to Wayne Morris – and his recordings of their life stories are now kept in Raglan Museum for posterity. “It was important to have them recorded for the future,” Eddy believes. “Another thing I do,” says the irrepressible Eddy, “is roll out 160 copies of (British radio comedy programme) The Goon Show which plays on Raglan Radio every Sunday night.” While Eddy’s looking to complete 20 years on air, Raglan Community Radio itself is about to celebrate the quarter-century mark in November. Edith Symes *The Pugwash Show with The Captain is on every Tuesday, 1-4pm, and repeated Saturday afternoon.

ATS! They are everywhere this year from New Zealand to the Northern Lands even the kitchens of Buckingham Palace. Wellington has rats as big as cats. In Raglan a rat crept into someone’s bed while they were sleeping and had a ‘midnight feast’ on a wheat bag. The theory is that we are in a Mega Mast Year. A Mast Year happens every few years when trees and other plants produce exceptionally high amounts of flowers and seeds. Masting may be a reproductive strategy, when trees produce more seeds than can be eaten by birds and insects. Every fifty years the trees go crazy and we have a Mega Mast Year The term "mast" comes from the old English word "mæst", meaning the nuts that have accumulated on the ground such as acorns and beech nuts In the Middle ages farmers used the glut for fattening

domestic pigs. It was also a great food resource for wildlife including rats. Rats can have a devastating effect in mast years , with the abundance of seeds and fruit there is an increase wild life. Rodents feed on the fruits of the forest, as well as the birds, lizards and insects, while stoats feed on the explosion rats and mice. Rats and oak trees are not native to New Zealand. However there are five natives beech trees mostly found on the South Island plus conifer trees providing nuts and seeds along with trees introduced from Europe. With the European trees came the RATS. Many groups including, The Department of Conservation (Doc), Whaingaroa Environmental Centre (WEC), Karioi Project Volunteers and caring individuals have been busy trapping the rats for the last few years in the surrounding countryside. House holders can also help by setting rat traps in their backyards. Pauline Abrahams

Music through the ages

L

ast Thursday Te Mata school performed their production twice for the Te Mata community, the hall was packed, including 50 Waitetuna students who came to the matinee of our show Music Through The Ages. We performed another show at 6pm. Every single child participated beautifully and had the time of their lives. We were so grateful for the guidance and support from Mrs Holmes and Ms Stuart who have done so much for the production and the participating children. Our plot consists of 4 children (Tegan, Laura, Noah and Connor) transported back in time with Granny DJ’s magical records. They were immediately whisked off through the decades starting with the 1950’s and finishing in the

2000’s meanwhile accidentally erasing the 1970’s! Finishing with a beautiful singing sensation from Lady StarStar aka. Star Knuiman, backed up by Ryley Shaw and Ashley Knox. Belinda, one of our extremely talented teacher aides, brought our vision alive with her bold and bright paintings; and with the help of the crew who assisted Mr Macleod with the backstage transitions, we were able to create a magical world of dance. Overall we had an amazing turnout of whanau and friends. Thank you so much to all those who supported us and we can’t wait for future performances. If you would like to see the photos from the night feel free to go onto the Te Mata School Facebook page and check out the gorgeous photos of the children. We are extremely proud of each and every one of them! Femka Wylie, Abigail Meyer and Maria Grilli

Young journalist provides a youthful voice

New youth journalist, Ayla Standley.

R

aglan Area School Year 9 student Ayla Standley is the newest writer to join the Raglan Chronicle. The 13-year-old will write a regular column about the things that are important to the youth of Whaingaroa. “I want to write stuff that they can relate to,” she says. Born and bred in Raglan, Ayla has lived in the same house in Raglan East since she was two. “I like that you know lots of people here, and it’s nice and calm compared to the city.” A talented writer, Ayla was asked to join the school’s media group last year by teacher in charge Hilary Elliot. “She suggested I write a column for the paper and I thought it would be a cool idea to build up my writing skills.” She also writes for the school newsletter and contributes to the monthly schools’ feature in the Chronicle. With dreams of being a journalist one day, the young actor who had a

main role in Raglan Theatre Academy’s production Alice in Wonderland hopes to do something in the performing arts as well. Ayla played the absent-minded and anxious White Queen in the sell-out production last year. Living close to the coast is one of the best things about growing up in Raglan, Ayla reckons, and she enjoys heading to the beach and taking photographs, another creative activity she loves. “I take photographs everywhere I can.” Younger brother Joel is a Year 7 student at Raglan Area School, mum Nicky works at Raglan Library and dad Andy works at Opus in Hamilton. She’s a fan of JK Rowling and has read all the Harry Potter books, rates Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande as her favourite musicians for their cool vibes, strong tunes and song writing talents, and although she describes herself as not very sporty, she likes playing badminton. Seriously Motivated $80,000 under G.V. On the market for the first time in 22 years, this property is located in one of the best locations Raglan has to offer, featuring stunning harbour, ocean and rural views from NOT ONE.... BUT TWO homes . The main dwelling is a charming chalet styled 2 bedroom 2 bathroom home with a large deck and the 2nd home is a 2 bedroom cottage with it’s own driveway access and privacy, currently returning rental income. The 2.8 acres lies to the north and there are no covenants and the bonus of a legal right to spring water on the title. There is SO MUCH potential!

Peace, Privacy & Park-like Grounds In the same family for 47 years this property is just stunning and spans over a flat 5.48 acres which is beautifully presented and offers an absolute haven for bird life. The grounds have been lovingly planted with a huge variety of colourful specimen and amenity trees, established shrubs and flowering plants along with a few original mature Rimu and Kahikatea. The country home features a 3 bedroom, 2000 built Initial home which enjoys views of the park-like grounds. There’s a double garage for the tools and ride-on mower too. Potentially a buyer may wish to explore using the beauty of this property for weddings and functions.
