The history-making Raglan Golf Club pennants team (left to right): Julian Punta-Doom, Scott Klaver, Peter Hogg, Silas Toonstra, Steve Hall, Glenn Rangitonga and club captain Stephen Hanham.

T

he Raglan Golf Club men’s pennants team scored a historic win for the club recently. Many years of trying finally brought a welcome Raglan win in the Waikato Golf Association inter-club pennants championship. Unbeaten throughout this season’s division four championship, Raglan took full advantage of their home course knowledge to score a semi-final win over Walton by a comfortable 5-1 margin. The afternoon final against Matamata was full of drama, however, the Raglan team of Peter Hogg, Scott Klaver, Glenn Rangitonga, Julian Punta-Doom, Silas Toonstra and Steve Hall held their nerve to win 3.5-2.5.

Hogg halved his match to clinch the success. Along with Hogg, Rangitonga, Toonstra and Klaver, he went through the day’s play undefeated. “It’s great to finally taste success, Hogg said. “I think the club has reached the finals six times over the years but before today we’ve never been able to put it all together like we did today – it’s great for the club. “Getting to play on our home course makes it even better. Players from all the participating teams were high in their praise of the upgraded Raglan course which some say, is playing better than ever. Success earned Raglan promotion to division three for next year’s championship. Sam Ryan

Muroki is hitting the right chords with rock legend

Local muso Muroki has caught the eye of some famous musical legends. Image: Reagen Butler

W

hen rock icon Elton John says he’s a fan, you know it’s time to take notice.

Raglan muso Muroki was introduced

to

the

legendary

singer/songwriter

through New Zealand musician Benee, who appeared with Six60 frontman Matiu Walters on an episode of the superstar’s Rocket Hour Radio dedicated to New Zealand music.

On the verge of signing with an international music label, Muroki is an artist on the rise. Benee – who had a TikTok hit with song Supalonely and her music has had more than 30 million streams on Apple Music - started communicating with Muroki through Instagram, letting him know she was a fan of his music. “I was like, wow, this is Benee and she’s telling me she really likes my music,” Muroki says.

Muroki’s a typical Kiwi guy, humble, down-to-earth and determined; every step he’s taken since he realised as a 14-yearold that music was his calling has been done to progress his career. A recent month-long stint planting trees helped him purchase equipment for his recording studio. It might sound grand, but the studio is set up in his bedroom and it’s here that he’s creating music for an EP he’s working on with Benee’s producer Josh Fountain. Muroki says he’s dedicating the next month solely to his music, which will mean he’ll have an awesome body of songs ready to go when he finally signs to a label. A singer/songwriter/musician and producer, the 19-year-old is making seriously good music that has jazz, reggae, pop, R&B and hip-hop influences. “If I create really good music that I’m happy with and it makes the listeners happy, then the label will be happy and I can continue to be true to myself.” Not new to the music scene, Muroki first took up the guitar as a nine-year-old under the tutelage of Cornerstone Roots guitarist Nicky Keys. He continued learning music through his high school years and began producing music at 14. Muroki with friend Lenny Reynolds and high school friends Jacob, Kelvin, Paulo and Tatava formed Cloak Bay and they released their first EP Digitown and the Boogie Boys in 2017. They cut their teeth playing live at the Yot Club and over the past few years have garnered a reputation around the country with their cool mix of jazz, indie and blue wave influences. Like Muroki, the rest of the band are off doing their own thing; chasing solo projects and taking their music in new directions. “I describe us as a music collective; everyone’s got their own thing happening but we can come together and do our own gigs as Cloak Bay.” Muroki also plays bass with indie/ roots/soul band Masaya who formed in the summer of 2019 with brother and sister Reiki on guitar/vocals, Kaea Ruawai on drums and Jules on lead guitar. While he’s chuffed with getting noticed by Benee and Elton John, he’s got his feet firmly planted on the ground and he’s not about to let the attention go to his head. “It’s weird knowing Elton John is listening to my music, I guess I’m doing something right,” he says. ‘Into Nature’ school fires up pupils with new confidence

I

t’s not unusual these days to come across a bunch of local pre-schoolers learning in the great outdoors, but a handful of Raglan parents are now also regularly going bush with their school-aged children to find a balance to what they see as a “cotton wool” world. The bush in this case is a fiveacre kahikatea forest at Te Pahu that’s effectively the giant-sized classroom of the aptly named ‘Into Nature School’. The fledgling school is accessed down a long, rutted farm track just off the Karamu horse trekking trail, and about the only nod to a traditional place of learning are a row of hooks for schoolbags and a makeshift chalkboard on their shed deck. For one day a week during term time – and the whole of this first week of the school holidays – children converge here not only from Raglan but also from the likes of Pirongia, Te Awamutu, Te Kowhai and Hukanui. They come already wearing gumboots as they’re quickly off into the forest, into nature, to experience “the things we all did as kids”, says school co-founder Amy Lake, who’s also a teacher and a deputy principal at nearby Whatawhata. “We always have a firepit,” she told the Chronicle last Friday – the last day of term – as 25 or so 5-13 year olds headed towards the towering canopy of kahikatea and crouched like sprites among the tree roots on the gently sloping forest floor. “There’s always some element of food preparation and cooking.” On Friday it was a firepit hangi to celebrate Matariki, the Maori New Year. All hands were on deck as the children helped carry wheelbarrowed-in firewood up to the spot where fellow teacher Eddie – who now lives in Te Uku but once ran a forest school in his native Spain – set the blaze alight. The meat, veg and stuffing balls would steam in large, lidded cabbage leaf-lined pots for four hours, Eddie explained to the children. But first they’d help chop up all the vegetables, working together on a groundsheet spread over a flat part of the forest floor. While they waited for the feast to cook they’d be busy turning empty tin cans into “fabulous” Matariki lanterns with tealight candles glowing inside, he said. Hammer and nails were to be the tools of choice, he added, “or responsible people might be able to use the drills for holes”. Some serious construction also goes on in the forest. Raglan teen Travis – whose younger sister Grace attends the school too – said he particularly liked “building

4 RAGLAN Chronicle

things”, indicating the start of a changing room he and Eddie had erected for those wet change-ofclothes kind of days. Travis and Grace’s cousins from Raglan, Pounamu and Anatipa, are also enrolled at the school, as is another Raglan lad who has learning difficulties and attends with his teacher’s aide. This school environment is especially good for children with high sensory needs like ADHD, Amy explains. “They just blend in.” The nature or forest school – as it’s also called – is the dream of Amy and her colleague Hillary Paalvast. Both primary trained, and each having taught in the Waikato for 18 years, they’d become somewhat disillusioned at seeing children enter the education system with low resilience and confidence.

Eddie gets the firepit going with help from the kids including Travis, top left.

So after being inspired on a professional development course by the success of New Zealand’s first forest school, set up in Hawke’s Bay, they went about creating a place where Waikato children too would have the opportunity to learn in the outdoors. Finding a space was the “tricky” part, say the pair, who both live in Whatawhata. But as a result of their letterbox drops, a communityminded farmer who already hosted scout groups and motocross riders offered to lease his native forest block with a stream running through it. “Once we found the spot it all lined up really nicely,” says Amy. ‘Into Nature School’ began one day a week back in January last year, with just 11 children including Amy’s youngest son. The school’s “definitely grown”, she says – so much so that from next term it’ll be run two days a week, on Thursdays as well as Fridays. The teacher-to-child ratio is 1:10, she explains, and there’s no shortage of like-minded teachers to call on to help deliver those authentic real-life experiences, minus today’s digital devices. Hillary, who once taught at Te Mata but is now based at Northern Health School in Hamilton, wishes her own two teens had still been young enough to attend when the nature school was set up. As it is her children – along with Amy’s eldest two – get to help out during the school holiday programmes, which this week was to be all about children indulging their “wild side” by whittling arrows for a bow and making fire using a flint or steel. Amy says their holiday programme is more geared towards fun in the outdoors, whereas weekdays during term time the focus is on specific educational needs.

Some of the nature school pupils and teachers (from left) Hillary, Amy and Eddie on the shed deck before the day's programme gets under way. Hillary adds that learning opportunities provided by the bush setting are limitless. She says the block is home for example to “the biggest, fattest kereru” or wood pigeons ever, and there are huge eels – named Godzilla and King Kong by the children – to be caught then released back into the stream.

All-weather survival skills are also a part of the diverse curriculum.

Virginia and Rodger Gallagher draw the raffle at the Old School Monster Garage Sale.

T

Glen Young, helped the building achieve Historic Places Act legal protection.

Centre manager Jacqueline Anderson says the non-profit arts centre primarily relies on movie screenings, music events, clay classes, room hires and workshops to cover operational costs.

“The Old School has grown from strengthto-strength since it was first established as a community arts centre and I’m certain, with the community behind us, we will come back stronger than ever, Rodger says.

hanks to the overwhelming support from the Whaingaroa community, the Old School SOS Monster Garage Sale was a huge success. Over $5000 was raised to help the muchloved arts centre recover from the financial fallout from the nationwide Covid-19 Level 4 lockdown.

“We are extremely grateful to our community for searching their wardrobes, basements and garages and donated the goods on offer, and then coming out in full force to buy up large. I think it shows how much the Old School means to the people of Raglan. Raglan Community Arts Council chair Rodger Gallagher says this isn’t the first time the community have rallied behind the Old School. The centre started life as a one-room school in 1883. When the community outgrew the building and the new school at Norrie Ave was expanded in 1962, the site and Old School building was given to the Raglan County Council. From 1962 till 1988, the building had many uses including shearing competitions, beauty competitions and in 1975 the building was used as the Raglan County Council office and smoko room. After years of neglect the old school was close to being demolished when a campaign led by local kuia Tuaiwa Hautai ‘Eva’ Rickard and the first Raglan Community Arts Council’s chairperson

The arts centre was established in 1988 and a combined group of the Raglan Community Arts Council and the Whaingaroa Work Co-operative volunteers started work refurbishing and restoring the building.

"The SOS Garage Sale has almost balanced the books. We will be having some SOS music events over the next few months so we are back in the black and can deliver what the community needs." Thanks to Four Square, Isobar, Kanuka, Liquor Centre, Raglan Book and Gift, Raglan Pharmacy, Raglan Surf New Zealand, The Monster Company, SuperValue, The Shack, Zinnia, Plants by Sill and Jillian Lankshear for their generous donations to the raffle. Thanks also to Jonas from Overhead Electrical for electrical testing, Lala Land for the cake donation, ULOs for the sushi cake, Raglan Coconut Yoghurt for the yoghurt, Raglan Artisan Bread and Xtreme Zero Waste. “A big shout out to the key volunteers who put in many hours behind the scenes - Maureen Soanes, Sherry Coulson, Lois Brooks, Jillian Lankshear, Bob Noble, Julie Hannah, Kay Fong and all of our whÄ nau army of Arts Centre members, family and friends who also provided much-needed support,â€? Jacqueline adds. Janine Jackson

A

s we get further into winter and the weather gets colder, we start to light our fires, turn on our heaters, bask in the warmth under our blankets, and drink our hot drinks. Our cats and dogs love to curl up next to us to soak up the warmth.

Some of our pets however live outside and just like their humans they can get cold too. The fur covering an animal acts as protection and gives some warmth over the colder months, but despite this when it is very cold outside, our furry animals also need some help staying comfortable outside. So how can we make winter more enjoyable for our outside pets? Provide adequate shelter away from the elements and protection from the wind. It could be as simple as placing their kennels behind a wall, inside the garage or putting up a temporary shelter. Kennels or beds should be raised off the ground to avoid cold draughts, and should be well insulated, with a sloped roof, and an adequate drainage system, to keep the inside dry. Winter bedding should be warm with lots of blankets. If your pet likes to rip up blankets you can staple carpet down on the kennel floor for extra

padding and warmth. Remember to always use nontoxic materials You will need to feed a good quality food, as this will help to give your pet the energy they need to keep their body temperature up and not use fat reserves. Make sure fresh water is always available and is not frozen. Remember our senior pets need extra care. They often have arthritis or joint pain and the cold damp weather can worsen these conditions; if you see your pet slowing down, please talk to your vet about a treatment plan. There are many different types and sizes of animal coats you can buy. They will provide the pet with an extra layer which is practically important for short haired dog’s, older or younger animals. Cats will instinctively find a place of warmth, but that place could sometimes be dangerous, for example, beneath a car or in the motor! By providing the option of a nice warm shelter in an outside area, such as access to garden sheds or wood sheds can make their winter months more enjoyable, warmer, and much safer. Keep your fur babies warm this winter. The Anexa Raglan Team đ&#x;‘?

Introducing new service: Seaside Nannies T his week the Chronicle sat down with Feli von Peter who has recently launched a local service offering babysitters and nannies to local families. You have recently set up a local nanny service/agency. How did you come up with the idea? Living in a growing and buzzing town with many young families we noticed quickly that the demand for trustworthy and reliable nannies and babysitters was bigger than the offer. The wish to make these services more available for everyone was the start of Seaside Nannies.

rwraglan.co.nz/RAG23212 Raglan Real Estate Limited Licensed (REAA 2008)

All our nannies and babysitters are experienced, interviewed, reference checked, police vetted and hold a valid first aid certificate. We make sure that we pair each family with a nanny that meets their unique needs. Is the service for both locals and visitors?

Seaside Nannies offers a Nanny and Babysitter Service. Whether you want to head out for a walk and a coffee in the morning or you go out for dinner with friends at night, Seaside Nannies will find you the best babysitter. And if you are in need of a carer who looks after your children on a regular basis a nanny is the perfect person for you. What qualities do your nannies generally have?

How do people get in touch with you and find out more?

Our nannies have a warm and inviting nature about them which gives young children a sense of feeling safe and respected. Before parents leave their children with their nanny we always recommend a gentle and peaceful introduction week where a parent is present while the nanny bonds the with children to build a healthy attachment. This assures that a certain level of trust gets created between the children,

Open Home This much-loved family home is located an easy 20-minute to Hamilton and 15 mins to Raglan. The pristine 1930s Californian bungalow is set in an idyllic location extending over 3.983 ha. An immaculate family home that combines character with modern living. There are 3 bedrooms; generous dining and living, with natural flow that opens onto an expansive decking. Three-metre bi-fold doors open from the second living area, providing yet another countryside aspect. The kitchen has beautiful granite benchtops and a large bay window. The land is divided into 7 paddocks, complete with a chook house, lots of mature trees, raised vege gardens and a legal water supply from a nearby dam for the stock.

And what qualifications or checks are required?

We created the service to support all parents. Visitors can be assured that their children are in safe and trusted hands while they enjoy time out. Consistency is most important for children, that is why we love taking care of children of local families. We have families that we have worked with for years now and the relationships we have formed are truly magnificent. Post-lockdown Billy Te Kahika event attracts many

M

ore than 200 people turned out last weekend to a post-lockdown meeting in Raglan organised by Voice for Choice, a local group aiming to raise awareness about what it sees as erosions in New Zealanders' civil rights and freedoms. Musician-turned-politician Billy Te Kahika raised concerns on issues ranging from government control and the lockdown through to mandatory vaccinations and 5G. He told the crowd that during lockdown he started doing some research after inconsistencies in the Government’s narrative “started to smell like a rotten fish”. Covid-19 was a virus with a less than 1% death rate. But the government’s response to it made him believe “the whole thing was a hoax”, with the virus being used as a way to control people, roll out 5G and further implement Agenda 30. Agenda 30 (originally Agenda 21), is the UN’s world collective action plan for achieving sustainable development goals in which private ownership of land is reduced, wealth is redistributed, and the environment, production, education, health, housing and information come under central governance. The UN aims to implement the sustainable development goals globally by 2030, saying “effective execution of Agenda 21 will require a profound reorientation of all human society, unlike anything the world has ever experienced”. Current prime minister Jacinda Ardern openly supports the plan and has said that principles of Agendas 21 and 30 were being implemented into NZ domestic policy. “Agenda 30 is about control,” Billy said, adding that it would also involve the repurposing of land, including farms and rural

areas, and moving people to high-density urban areas. Billy also talked about the post-lockdown cost to people, many who were now dependent on the state and expressed concern about martial law being implemented under the Covid-19 Public Health Response Act. These concerns prompted him to speak out, doing live podcasts during lockdown. Receiving a response from the public, it became more of a movement and he decided to set up the New Zealand Public Party. But the party was not registered in time so Billy is currently talking with other minor parties to join with before the next election. Sue Grey, co-leader of the NZ Outdoors Party, said people were looking towards the Raglan community for “inspiration and courage” to stand up and fight against the postcovid climate of control. “We always thought they (the government) would know the limits but with covid we found out differently. We now know we can’t trust the system to look after us”. Sue, a lawyer who specialises in environmental and human rights issues, also spoke about the dangers of 5G, which was currently being rolled out across the New Zealand and the rest of the world. She said 5G was different from previous cellphone technology because it was based on microwave radiation with 5G companies assuming it was safe until it was proven dangerous. “We’re been told a whole lot of lies that’s it safe – it’s not safe and there’s thousands of studies that say so,” she said. Her co-leader Alan Simmons said there were 10,000 5G cellphone towers going up around New Zealand and “we have no idea what the long-term health effects are”.

More than 200 people turned up to the Raglan Town Hall for a post-lockdown community meeting organised by Voice for Choice. He also spoke about the effects of pollution and 1080 poisoning on fishing and hunting, and the whole environment, vowing the party would ban 1080 if elected. Both parties said it was crucial that all New Zealanders voted in the coming election, as a non-vote was a vote for Labour or National. Erin Hudson, from Authentic Resistance, then talked about the importance of understanding the 10 rights enshrined in New Zealand’s Health and Disability Code, and the need for people to exercise these rights during health treatment. She said New Zealanders were not very good at complaining when they got bad service and this included in the health sector. But everyone had the right to complain, to get full and relevant information, to not be bullied or harassed. “It’s (the code) often overridden because people do what they are told, but if we don’t use it we will lose it,” Erin warned.

Sue Dick, from Warnings About Vaccine Expectations, said there were many questions around the Covid-19 situation, such as how accurate the testing was, the effect of preexisting health factors on victims, and how many of the those reported to have died from covid-19 actually died from the virus itself. When the average time to develop a vaccine was seven years, there were also questions over a rushed covid-19 vaccine: “Will producers guarantee that this vaccine will do no harm?” she asked. “Vaccines are a taboo subject – we are not allowed to question vaccine safety or consider side effects.” Indications were that the imminent covid-19 vaccine would be required not only for travel in and out of New Zealand, but also for access to education, employment and other services.
