To The Raglan Chronicle While the adversity of COVID-19 may have afflicted the tourism industry, there is no doubt that a hopeful recovery will arrive. Furthermore, with welldeserved additions such as the $2.5 million upgrade to the famous Raglan Wharf, there is no doubt that tourism will flourish again in our town. But while tourists bring money to the many hard working local businesses, they also bring an environmental strain to our lovely town. This is why I am writing regarding the publication of a survey in your online platform of The Raglan Chronicle, a survey which can help eliminate the environmental stress from our community. This survey is part of a wider research study for the Graduate Diploma in Destination Management programme at the University of Waikato, being conducted under the supervision of Prof. Chris Ryan. This research is associated with the work undertaken by Waikato University as part of its United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) initiatives within the International Network for Sustainable Tourism (INSTO). The primary purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of Raglan residents’ view on the effects tourism has on the waste accumulation. The study therefore has potential to improve waste management in the Raglan community. Two weeks ago, we shared a link to a survey on the Raglan Facebook page. We have received a few responses which have provided us with some very useful data. However,
we have not reached our expected number of participants. We hope that by the link to the survey going up on your website it will have the chance of reaching a wider base, helping us collect more results. Your help will therefore provide us with the data needed to improve sustainability in the tourism sector within Raglan and improve the quality of waste management. Participation in this research is voluntary and anonymous and any responses will remain confidential. The questionnaire itself should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete. If you have any questions or need more details about this research, please contact me, Tracey Cornes (TC164@ students.waikato.ac.nz) or my supervisor Chris Ryan (chris.ryan@waikato.ac.nz).  Raglan is a beautiful place. Whether you are a surfer, waking up early to jam the waves, or a family enjoying the warm beach together, Raglan’s environment and therefore its environmental protection are crucial. This is why we need to keep such a wonderful place pristine and enjoyable for everyone. Understanding the effect tourism has on waste generation helps construct a new waste management framework. Therefore, your help in publishing the survey will help keep Raglan beautiful, and it will help Raglan stay Raglan. Finally, if you would like us to write a short article on the importance of the relationship between tourism, Raglan and issues like waste management, Airbnb etc, we would be happy to do this. Kind regards Tracey Cornes

Organiser Kiri Binnersely (front row, third from left) flanked by locals taking part in the peaceful action supporting Black Lives Matter and Black Girls Surf last Saturday.
ast Saturday a group of locals came together for a paddle out in the Raglan Harbour in an act of solidarity with worldwide Black Lives Matter protests. The protests were held in response to the death of George Floyd and the ongoing racism towards African Americans in the United States of America and around the world.
On Thursday she began to plan the paddle out for Saturday with the help of a few familiar faces, Kelly Clarkson, Lisa Thomson, Arnie-Rose Solomon and Raglan Floral Co.

A solid group of residents came together to support the paddle out locally. Organiser Kiri Binnersely had seen global activist group, Black Girls Surf, organizing a paddle out event and thought, “It would be amazing to do this in Raglan as we have a huge community of surfers.” “The ocean has the power to heal, and bring people together. This is a peaceful protest for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery who lost their lives due to police brutality and racism in America and across the globe. Racism is not ok” She said.

Peggy Lee's artwork often included landscapes of Raglan.
olleagues say a love of creativity was central to the life of artist and teacher Peggy Lee, who regarded Raglan as her spiritual home despite having moved to Auckland late last year to be closer to family. News of her unexpected death a fortnight ago has left the local arts community reeling. “She was the most giving, caring person I know, and intrinsic to her being was this love of art,” fellow artist and teacher Susan Flight told the Chronicle. “Art was definitely the core of her life.” Susan this week reminisced about “the old days” when she and Peggy both taught during Raglan Old School Arts Centre’s annual summer schools. Susan says Peggy was a potter back then but her creativity later “slipped into” the painting career for which she will be best remembered. “She was a marvellous teacher,” Susan recalls of the off-site workshops – in ceramic sculpture, drawing and painting – which Peggy ran from her then home on the estuary in Raglan West, the same spot where her three sons were raised. Peggy also taught art and technology at Hamilton Girls’ High School for many years before her retirement and was “much loved by the students”, says a colleague from the prestigious school, Silvia Huser. She recalls Peggy as a “dedicated” teacher striving to educate the next generation, and says she will be “sadly missed”. Examples of her talent as a painter can be seen on the walls of both the Girls’ High school and hostel, and in the homes of her friends and colleagues – a reminder of her kind heart, Silvia adds. Peggy specialised in landscapes and seascapes that captured the essence of Raglan, and often exhibited in downtown galleries like Show Off Aotearoa where her work was flanked by paintings from the likes of fellow locals Jane Galloway and Jenny Rhodes.
Peggy Lee with paintbrush in hand. In fact this trio – along with local photographer Stuart Mackenzie – all participated in a tribute exhibition at Show Off back when the design for the new Kopua footbridge was being debated. Their work also complemented each others’ at Show Off’s 14th birthday exhibition some six years ago. Another “great exhibition” at the gallery – entitled ‘Raglan Rocks’ – was a collaboration between Peggy and her longtime friend Jenny Rhodes, says Show Off owner Adele Wooller, who this week dug out old newspaper clippings of the pair sharing their love of art and the environment. “Jenny’s been hugely inspirational to me,” Peggy was quoted as saying at the time. Her trademark landscapes have been described as playing with impressionism, and with colour and abstract elements. Peggy’s twin sister Wendy Lee says that although they grew up in Hamilton they frequently holidayed in Raglan, first at the campground then at the family bach. Raglan was indeed Peggy’s spiritual home, Wendy confirms. Her sister always came back here after stints training and teaching in Auckland, and her artwork was “prolific”. Since Peggy’s death Wendy has discovered 100-odd stored paintings of Raglan landmarks like Mt Karioi, Ngarunui and the upper harbour. “Peggy has been in Raglan so long and had so many friends locally,” she adds. One of Peggy’s sons, Jamie Karl, says his mother loved Raglan dearly and reveals she was also “something of an environmental activist” who played some role in the protection of native trees. Although she’d had health problems including diabetes for some years, Peggy’s sudden death two weeks ago of a pulmonary embolism – at the age of 70 – was unexpected. Despite her health issues Peggy was “always so positive,” says Jane Galloway – “a kind and compassionate person who loved doing art”. Edith Symes

he spectacular Wairēinga/Bridal Veil Falls will be closed for one dayon Thursday 11 June for feral goat control. Wairēinga/Bridal Veil Falls, near Raglan, are managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) and the popular location is a magnet for goats drawn to the tasty native plants growing on rocky outcrops. DOC is closing the area for one day to enable contractors to safely control the goats. The popular track takes visitors down a short, pretty, native forest walk to view the plunging waters from above. Fifty-five metres below, the pool at the base of the falls is reached by a staircase. “The goat control is very likely to happen around the waterfall, as this is where we keep receiving reports of goats” says DOC Waikato Biodiversity Ranger,
Cara Hansen, “. “It is such a popular area we need to close it to the public for the day to keep people safe.” A two-person team from WR Curnow Contracting Limited will be hunting with suppressed firearms and dogs. “We give out bow hunting permits here, but the goats have not been sufficiently controlled using this method, and are now damaging the fragile vegetation around the waterfall and throughout the reserve.” As well as informing local hapū, schools, the i-Site and police, DOC will be erecting a barrier at the track entrance and DOC rangers will be on hand to make sure no one enters while the control is underway. Please check the DOC website for the latest information about the closure planned for 11 June. www.doc.govt.nz Department of Conservation
Mega research project is improving New Zealand’s ocean knowledge N ew Zealand’s leading marine scientists involved in the $11.5 million Moana Project have gathered virtually over two days [27-28 May] to review their progress in the five-year research project to revolutionise our understanding of Aotearoa’s oceans and our ability to forecast ocean behaviour. In less than two years since being awarded the funding through the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s (MBIE’s) Endeavour Fund, the project spearheaded by MetOcean Solutions, the oceanographic division of MetService has already delivered some great results. MetOcean’s Moana Project Director & Science Lead is Raglan-based João de Souza and he said the team of 60 people are bringing together cutting-edge science and technology, historical and new data and indigenous knowledge to fill major gaps in our ocean knowledge. “With the enhanced ocean knowledge this project will provide, New Zealand will be better prepared for the changes in our oceans and the impact of warming seas on our coastlines and marine environments.
It will also enable our role as kaitiaki and can help ensure the sustainably of our kaimoana and the livelihoods generated through the blue economy which generates $4 billion annually.” “We’ve made great progress already based around a number of building blocks to achieve this ambitious and holistic project,” says João de Souza. Some of the building blocks of the project are: • Developing innovative methods to observe ocean temperatures • Developing computer algorithms to model Aotearoa’s ocean dynamics such as circulation, currents and subsurface temperatures • Conducting unique research to gain a greater understanding of our kaimoana namely kuku (mussels), koura (crayfish) and pāua. • Learning from iwi about their oceanographic knowledge honed over centuries of ocean voyaging, kaimoana gathering and the observed changes to our oceans. RAGLAN Chronicle 7
To our Chronicle readers and supporters First and foremost, we would like to extend our thanks for your support. The past couple of months have been a testing time for many and it has been heartwarming to see the ways our community has come together to support each other. As you may all be aware the media industry, as a whole, has been experiencing a lot of change in recent years with the rise of social media and digital production as well as the continuing high costs associated particularly with print media. Over the past few months we have seen countless publications folding and many talented writers lose their jobs. These changes noted above, coupled with our experience of the recent pandemic, has encouraged us to re-look at how we move forward in order to continue publishing the Chronicle and to remain progressive and innovative. Government support that was announced for the media industry during lockdown, while it provided much needed aid to broadcast and radio, unfortunately did not include support for print media. With this current environment it is with heavy hearts that we announce that we will be shifting to fortnightly publication from our current weekly schedule. While we will only be publishing the Chronicle fortnightly moving forward, we are excited to announce that we will now be publishing the magazine edition, The Local Rag, every month. We will implement these changes in the first week of July until the end of November 2020. We will then review the new frequency and decide how to move forward. Thank you for your understanding. We are choosing to embrace these changes and we look forward to continuing to celebrate the community we live in. Thanks again for your support. The Raglan Chronicle Team
