OPINION: The Minister is ‘off planet’ May 27, 2021

’ve decided Minister O’Connor and I must live in an alternate reality.

And that’s a problem as it’s affecting Rural New Zealand and its communities badly. One of his most recent statements in the media — ‘that dairy farmers needed to do more to attract workers’ — is so out of touch. For months now, industry groups around the country have been telling him and the Government about the need to open the borders and MIQ spaces to help fill the desperate shortage of skilled workers. The operative word here is ‘skilled’. It includes dairy, rural contractors (currently suffering by using unskilled workers), agri-business, red meat, horticulture, wine, wool and shearing industries — and the extensive list goes on. Minister O’Connor thinks unemployed Kiwis will rush to fill these the vacancies. While I, like most of us who operate and live in the real world know, that won’t happen, nor is a statement like that, helpful. We’ve labelled Budget 2021 the ‘Broken Compass’ budget for good reason. It’s obvious the Government is lost. The only clear direction throughout the Budget reading was that Rural NZ will be expected pay the country’s bills. Labelled as ‘the biggest lift in a generation to beneficiaries” … where was the support for the hard working, getting-on-with-it rural sector? I travel through rural communities, speaking with them and their industry representatives, constantly. As an MP

for NZ’s only rural political party, we value greatly and appreciate what these communities contribute. The Minister, meantime, is sending them into a spin. Not only are there staffing issues; there are catchment (water), carbon farming, methane, banking, health and connectivity issues, to name but a few. Mental health issues and angst is rising rapidly in the rural sector. Why does this Government spend so much time talking about “wellbeing” when it’s contributing to the problems? Farmers who really don’t want to be political, are fighting back on any proposed new rules and regulations individually, and through their industry rep organisations. While a group of southern farmers has just formed Groundswell NZ, in response to proposed policies they see as ‘so far off the wall, it’s ridiculous’. Other support initiatives are underway. Readers may be aware of my family’s animal welfare issues four years ago. At the time, my son sought help, which was not forthcoming. So our family was pleased to be a part of the launch of a Fonterra review seeking views on support services for farmers last Friday <subs note: May 21>. Simply because our first-hand experience is about the matters Fonterra is looking to address. The situation we faced was avoidable if the support structures, which were in place worked properly, so we’re helping publicise this to ensure robust feedback. Coastal regeneration threatened by vandals

hey might not be the most attractive of trees but the macrocarpa growing on iwi land between the Kokiri Centre and the airfield were planted with an ecological purpose in mind. Sadly, Tainui hapu environmental spokesperson Angeline Greensill and Waikato Coastcare - West Coast coordinator Stacey Hill say a spate of poisoning of these trees and other smaller natives is threatening ongoing regenerative plantings in the area. The pair are now looking at installing CCTV cameras in order to safeguard future plantings planned for this area. “I feel that this is all about the view and these trees are blocking the view for someone,” Angeline says. Angeline’s father Tex Rickard used the macrocarpa in his decades-long work restoring the sand dunes along this part of the Whaingaroa coast. It was important mahi, he had stood alongside his wife Tuaiwa Hautai ‘Eva’ Rickard who campaigned to have the land returned. The ancestral land where the trees sit was taken by the Government during WWII to use as a military airfield. Instead of handing the land back when it was no longer required for defence purposes a 62acre block was turned into a public golf course in 1969. In continuing her father’s legacy of beach restoration, Angeline now finds herself in another battle of sorts with an invisible foe determined to eradicate trees in a small patch of this land. “This land was very degraded before my father started his work. He grew the macrocarpa for their branches which when long enough were pruned and used as groynes on the beach to trap sand so dunes would recover faster after erosion events,” she says. Angeline estimates the destruction of the macrocarpa has been going on for several years and young pohutukawa have also been targeted by the vandals. Stacey hopes the culprits will stop the poisoning once they realise the importance of the work that is being done along the coastline. “Sand dunes are part of the natural character of coastlines, they play an important role filtering water and often hold intrinsic cultural and archaeological values. Places for People Update: The parklets are coming

he Places for People project team and Raglan Community Board are excited to announce that the Bow St parklets are under construction, and should be ready to be installed at the end of June. The Places for People Project has been made possible thanks to funding from the central government, through Waka Kotahi’s (NZTA) Innovating Streets fund. The two parklets will be installed close to the existing raised crossings on Bow St, near Ali’s Turkish Kebabs and the second outside Trade Aid. The concept behind the parklets is to give extra space for pedestrians and cyclists to use and enjoy the downtown area - creating seated areas to enjoy takeaways or to simply take a break and catch up with someone while walking and cycling around town. The great thing about the project is that as part of the trial the community will have the opportunity to provide feedback to help shape how we move forward. Once installed, the trial period for the parklets will run through until December, when we will evaluate the success

of the project. If the feedback is positive the trial will continue until March 2022. A few weeks after installation when everyone has had a chance to try the parklets and get used to the changes, you can let us know what you think of these new public spaces. Your feedback is important to us and the project, and can be given via the Community Board website and forms available from the library. You will also notice the addition of some road art at the crossing of Wainui Rd between the Shack & Wyld (formerly Blacksands). The road art will be painted on the surface of the road to highlight to drivers and pedestrians that this is a busy area with a lot of foot traffic. This will be done on the nights of 21, 22 and 23 June (weather permitting). Road art has been proven around the world to slow drivers down and make them feel more aware of pedestrians. In conjunction with the Places for People project and as a result of our monitoring and feedback from the community, Waikato District Council will be implementing some changes to reduce the congestion and improve safety at the intersection of Bow St & Wainui Rd, in front of the Harbour View

Hotel. This will involve moving the give-way line forward on Wainui Rd so cars don’t stop in the middle of the crossing, and trialling a painted roundabout at the intersection of Bow St & Wainui Rd. Being just paint on the road surface it will allow trucks, emergency vehicles, and other large vehicles, or those towing to simply drive over it. There will also be give-way lines added to Bow Street in both directions. The aim of this trial is to alleviate the traffic congestion and create a more freeflowing intersection where it becomes clear who gives way to who. The four parallel parks in front of LJ Hooker will also be changed to angle parks for safety reasons and to minimise delays at the roundabout as people park. Each of the three raised crossings on Bow St will also be pedestrianised. All this work is scheduled to be undertaken on the nights of 21, 22 and 23 June (weather permitting). Bow Street and Wainui Road (from the roundabout) will be closed to all through traffic on these nights. As part of this work there will initially be a number of “safe hit” plastic poles attached to the road surface along with painted lines to indicate the intended pathway for vehicles.

The project team has requested to keep the use of these safe hit poles to the required minimum number. If, after the trial period, the community feedback is positive and a majority of people want the changes made permanent, then the safe hit poles will be replaced with new concrete curbing and expanded garden beds on Wainui Rd. People might be wondering about the designs for Putoetoe Place, at the bottom of Bow Street, that were developed earlier in the project. At this stage due to cost and timing, the focus has been on delivering the two parklets and road art. We have gathered a lot of info and feedback and there is support for a redesigned public space in the Putoetoe Place area and this will be readdressed with the businesses and community later in the year. The Places for People project team would like to acknowledge that this has been quite a journey to get to this point - from lockdown to now being able to create and install some new public spaces into our town. The team recognises that there are many different opinions around town about this project. Throughout it all we have strived to listen to all the different opinions and take on board everyone’s feedback in a constructive and respectful manner. The opportunity to trial some changes to the downtown area, to re-imagine what might be possible without using ratepayer money was an obvious choice for the Community Board and Project team and we ask that you approach this trial period with an open mind and take time to enjoy the parklet spaces. Raglan Art To Wear 2021 review and results CHILDREN'S SECTION O n Saturday, June 5th, the Raglan community got together for the biennial Raglan Art To Wear show. The two shows, including the sold-out evening showing, featured different categories of wearable art; Spice of Life, Carbon Neutral, It’s in the Bag and children’s Lost at Sea.

The show opened with a striking dance performance by circus duo Freedom 2 Fly, setting an upbeat and playful tone for the rest of the night. This was followed by the children’s category, Lost at Sea, which consisted of many unique garments ranging from jellyfish to a message in a bottle. This category had the most entrants by far. However, no two were the same, making it entertaining and impressive considering the young age of these contestants. The Spice of Life category was another to reign the runway. This category was the spice of the night, as the broad theme meant that every piece to walk the runway was a surprise. The most literal translation of the article was a garment in the form of a spice rack; however, some chose to take a comedic approach to the genre-providing some giggles for the audience. From Monster Energy cans to toilet paper rolls-a significant theme throughout the night was using upcycled materials, especially seen within the Carbon Neutral category. The use of reused materials has become part of the judging criteria, encouraging participants to adhere to the ethos of Raglan as a zero waste leader. The 2021 Raglan Art To Wear was full of highlights, one being the It’s in the Bag category, where contestants formed garments based on the contents of a mystery bag. Another being a second solo performance of the night by Freedom 2 Fly's Jair Ramirez, who performed some extreme aerial strength exercises. Ramirez left the crowd in absolute awe as he balanced on stilts with only one hand to hold himself up. To sum up the night, it was a fantastic collaboration of creative and talented Raglan individuals. The show was a great representation of the diversity and talent within the Raglan community and is a community tradition that will be enjoyed. Taking out the spot of the supreme winner, was Pinaceae made by Elaine Labador- Urrea, who handcrafted a dress out of pinecones. The detailing on this piece was so intricate and the piece was seamless, clearly taking a lot of time and effort to secure the well-deserved win. The models, designers and organisers of the event should all be proud of being part of and putting on such a fantastic night. ore than 100 students took a scenic bus tour with a difference last week – up to the Wharauroa plateau wind farm to restock their schools’ time capsules from a decade before, when the towering turbines that dot the Te Uku skyline first began generating power for the national grid. And for twins Macy and Fin Wheeler it was a real trip up memory lane, as they got to reenact the placing of the locked steel box holding their old primary school’s memorabilia into the basement of one of the 28 turbines. The four time capsules updated last Thursday by local schools will now stay untouched for

another 10 years, marking the longevity of a multimillion-dollar energy initiative that many in the local community originally had little time for. Wellington-based Meridian Energy built its then controversial Raglan wind farm, which generates enough renewable energy each year to supply about 27,000 average New Zealand homes, in alliance with local electricity lines company WEL Networks. Meridian’s 10-year celebrations last week at Te Mata Hall – where trucks carrying each of the massive turbines had trundled by back in 2011 – included all four schools in the district, with students and teachers from each recalling their memories of that time.

Next time, when lifting that pre-paid bag up and out to the kerbside, imagine doing that 300 times a day! It's so important to keep those bags under 15kg folks. We don't want our Xtreme whanau coming back injured. We will continue to leave behind any bags that are overweight. Heavy items like glass should be in your recycling, (with exception of broken glass that must be wrapped and safely stowed in the middle of your bag) food scraps go in the food waste container. It takes a huge amount of energy and resources to crush, transport, melt, re-mold via the RECYCLING process, when instead they simply could just be REFILLED & REUSED. If not by you, then certainly by someone else in our community. Op shops everywhere gladly accept clean jars of all shapes and sizes. Here in Raglan you could take them to Crop Swap, or SWOP the bulk bin store where folks refill them over and over again with oil, dishwashing liquid, muesli, sweet treats or baking supplies! Clip top bottles could be refilled with kombucha at The Herbal Dispensary or local brews by Workshop Brewery.

The boys weren't fazed with only having one sub as they showed grit and determination to get the win. There were some great goals scored and some great hussle on defence to deny them from scoring.

atch Report by Jayla F - We played against Hamilton Girl's High School for our last grading game, and won 19-8. Our team worked really well together and played the best we’ve ever played. It was a bit challenging playing in the rain because the ball was slippery but

we stayed strong with our attack and defence during the whole game and it worked out really well. Something that I think stood out in this game was how our team managed to intercept the ball lots and stick with our players so that we get the ball back and take it to our end of the court.
