Congratulations on your new album, were there particular inspirations or themes that you explored while recording? Thank you! There were definitely some strong themes of whakapapa, motherhood, and identity in the writing of this record. My friends Lips (Steph Brown and Fen Ikner) who produced it are parents of young kids too so we had some great wānanga while we worked on it. It was very fun and a real time of learning too- almost like doing research into myself but by extension all mothers and all urban Māori as well. We recently did an investigation on the role of music and art in the community of Raglan - did growing up here influence you as a musician/ artist? It definitely did. My first instrument was the drums and where I live now in Auckland- you couldn't have grown up here smashing the drums for an hour after school every day that's for sure. Raglan is a very creative town with different priorities to a big city like Auckland. I always say people in Raglan work to live, they don't live to work. I feel like people there arrange their work to have

the kind of life they want- fit in surfing or art or whatever. It's awesome I love that. And there are a lot of characters. I feel like it's a bit easier to be yourself in a town like Raglan and that kind of mindset is important for making any kind of art, including music. Favourite memory of Raglan growing up and things you look forward to when you return? Growing up I loved having my friends close. Walking up the road to Rhyannon's house and hanging out, that kind of thing. The people I grew up with in Raglan are still my best friends! Ha. Now when I return I really just look forward to hanging out at my parents house because it's so nice out at Whale Bay across from the ocean and my mum got a spa soooo.... you'll find me there lol. I do love how many cool shops and cafes are there now. I love going to those- Rockit, Atamira, the op shop! Good opshop. But this weekend I happen to be looking forward to my gig at the Yot Club. I can't wait to see Merehia play I heard she's really good so if you're coming get there early to see her! Busy time: Ken Barry at the weigh station.

I

t’s been a bumper season for hooking marlin off Raglan this summer – and bumper to trailer parking too with many big-game boaties lured across from the east coast to try their luck here. Raglan Sports Fishing Club president Ken Barry attributes the influx and higher catch numbers to better conditions this side of the island over the last few months. “Our warm climate has stayed around longer, and the dominant south-west sea currents that hold hot water have optimised conditions,” he told the Chronicle this week. “It’s definitely been a really good season.” Ken reckons the club’s weighed 50-odd marlin this year at its weigh station in the car-park behind the Harbour View Hotel, when normally the figure’s around 30-35. “But we’ve also tagged more than we’ve weighed,” he adds, at just over 70

rather than the usual 50 or so. Anglers are expected to tag and release at least half the catch to assist research into distribution and movement of the large, migratory game fish. Every year marlin make their way down the country from breeding grounds in the Kermadec Islands, Ken explains, following bait fish which this year have been more plentiful on the west coast than on the east. The upshot locally is that quite a number of younger boaties in town as well as club members – of whom about 70 percent are recreational fishers – have been out chasing the marlin. Boaties will go a long way in pursuit of a species considered by some to be a pinnacle of offshore game fishing due to their size, power and relative rarity. Ken estimates that on average a boat will travel

100-150 nautical miles a day in search of marlin. And that’s on top of some lengthy drives to get here in the first place. Ken says boaties have been coming from as far away as Whakatane and Napier this summer to get a piece of the action. Some stayed over for more than a week at the main local campground when the club ran its 8 Day Mixed Classic competition last month, he says, with boat trailers taking up all the designated parking space at the domain boat ramp as well as stretching halfway along Marine Parade. One young local fisho the Chronicle talked to this week agreed it had been a “phenomenal” season. The warm waters had brought out not only marlin but also other subtropical species like mahi-mahi and yellowfin tuna, he said. Edith Symes

High resolution imagery of the top of power poles will be taken by a low flying helicopter so safety and replacement assessments can be made. The aim is to keep the public safe by rectifying any issues before they cause problems including power outages. The public are encouraged to take appropriate steps with animals and livestock, if they are likely to be spooked, such as moving them away from paddocks near network power lines and/or moving them to a secure location. eaweek – Kaupapa Moana (6 March to 14 March) is the annual event to celebrate and connect with our oceans

Seaweek is about inspiring all Kiwis to renew their connections with the sea, to better understand its habitats, characteristics and inhabitants, and how to care for them. Did you know up to 85% of New Zealand wildlife could be in the ocean? From Saturday 6th March, activities to engage kiwis in celebrating the sea are happening nationwide, from guided snorkel tours in marine reserves and driftwood carving competitions to film screenings and seminars on biodiversity, and community stream and beach clean ups. Get the whole family involved in recording what you can see in ‘Citizen Science’ projects, from shark sightings to the types of litter found on local beaches. Plastic pollution has been firmly established as one of the greatest dangers

to the marine environment, and what we see on the beach is only a fraction of the problem. Most marine pollution is already on the seafloor, an estimated 70% of plastic pollution has sunk to the seabed, 15% is on the sea surface, a further 15% is on the sea shore. To hear first hand inspiring stories of conservation, join us online on Monday 8th March, at 7pm, for a Facebook Live conversation with Te Radar and guests Rob Lewis, Marine Scientist & Co-ordinator of the ‘Shark Spy’ Project, Moana TamaarikiPohe, Community Leader & Environmental Enthusiast, and Charlie Thomas, Ocean Conservationist & Volunteer. Go to https:// www.facebook.com/seaweek We can all get involved and make a difference - go to the Seaweek website to find what’s on in your area https://www.seaweek. org.nz/whats-on

to Wyld (formerly Blacksands). This will proceed in the next two months. In conjunction with the Places for People project and as a result of our monitoring and feedback from the community, Waikato District Council is looking at a complementary project to improve the congestion and safety at the intersection of Bow st & Wainui Rd. This will involve moving the give way line forward on Wainui Road so cars don’t stop in the middle of the crossing, and trialling a paint-only roundabout in the Bow/Wainui Street junction, similar to the one at Calvert Rd in Whale bay. Being just paint on the road surface will allow trucks and other large vehicles or those towing to simply drive over it. There will also be give way lines added to Bow street in both directions. The aim of this trial is to alleviate the traffic congestion and create a more free flowing intersection where it becomes clear who gives way to who. Later in the year and into 2022, after we have all had some time to experience the changes, there will be the opportunity for feedback from the community to decide what parts of the project we would like to make permanent and what things should be returned to their current state. Raglan Wharf Upgrade Project Update

W

elcome to the third update from the Raglan Wharf Upgrade Project. For consistency, the report is structured in the same way as previous issues. Generally, it has been workmanlike progress over the past couple of months, as we work to develop procurement documentation for the various packages of work. Health & Safety The task to implement the risk assessment recommendations has been shared between Council business-as-usual work and actions within the scope of the project. The project will take on the larger one-off pieces of work - for example handrails, lighting, and traffic management. These works are being included as part of the West Walkway package of works.

This is a good opportunity to talk about the West Walkway package. Whilst carrying out the procurement it became clear that this package of work would firstly need to include the H&S works and the East Walkway that connects from the boat ramp to the pontoon. We will make some minor formatting changes to the next update to reflect this. We have also recognised that there is a need to co-ordinate all the projects at the wharf so that they are of similar look and scale, and that new and old construction integrate as best as they can. We have referred to this task as master planning which sounds a bit grander than it actually is. It is simply integrating the packages of work to ensure cohesion in the project as a whole. Wharf Sub Structure A detailed wharf inspection was carried out earlier in February to establish a baseline of what

structure is good and what is not so good. This is progressing as a project separate to the PGF funding. For our project we will be concerned with urgent work should it be identified. At the time of writing this update, the report was progressing and is due to be issued shortly. We expect to be able to provide more detail in the next update. Please note that the precautionary weight limit of five tonne on the structure remains in place. To assist with managing the weight limit, a lockable bollard has been placed at the entrance to the service lane. Pontoon and East Walkway Procurement documentation for the Pontoon is nearing completion. As mentioned above the East Walkway has been included in the West Walkway/master planning

project. This is because the design and construction of the walkways is expected to be similar. This section will be retitled Pontoon to reflect this. West Walkway The procurement document for this project which now includes East Walkway and Health and Safety upgrades is under way. We are looking to complete this over the coming weeks. We will change the section title to reflect this. Whaingaroa Infrastructure Study Now that the other projects have been defined and are in the process of being released to the market the project team is better equipped to get this slightly different package of work under way. The Raglan Community Board have been reaching out to our neighbours on the north side of harbour to gauge their interest in collaborating with us. It seems that we are not the only

ones thinking along these lines. Over the coming month the project team is planning to carry out some early work on the desired outcomes of the study and contacting interested parties to partake in the study. Project Management With the procurement phase well under way, the Project Management tasks are tied more closely to Council as we manage the selection of the suppliers to carry out the work. What does this mean? This means a lot of work in the background. We will develop how Council goes to market in a way that balances their risk exposure on cost, quality, and time, with the desired outcomes that have been developed by the Raglan Community Board and stakeholders. Can you help our Community Composting Service continue? We LOVE home composters, worm farmers and supporters of the food waste collection! Diverting food waste, making good compost and growing great gardens is the BEST way of keeping food waste out of landfill. Xtreme Zero Waste are proud to have been closing the loop on food waste for 3.5 years now, diverting a whopping 550 tons of food waste and 500 tons of greenwaste locally to turn into nutritious compost for local gardeners to grow their own flowers and kai. This service accepts hard-to-home-compost things like citrus, onions, meat and bones (no fish), dairy products, dry goods like spoiled flour and uncooked rice etc. Anyone can use the food waste collection at anytime for these food waste items. Or if your compost is overwhelmed and you need time to sort that worm farm, or empty those compost bins. If you’ve had a lot of summer visitors and have extra food waste then use the food waste collection for the surplus unavoidable food waste and help Xtreme to make compost for local gardeners. All our closing the loop products are sold locally.

Our community kerbside collection service for food waste is NOT guaranteed to continue. As Council put their Long Term Plan together, WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT RIGHT NOW to advocate for this service to Waikato District Council Mayor. Email a letter of support now to Mayor Allan Sanson: mayor@waidc.govt.nz

3 top reasons the Xtreme fo od waste collection is go od for our tow n. 1. If our comm u

nity diverts fo od waste they save on user pays pre -paid bags. If there is no ke rbside collect ion for food waste then use of pre-paid ba gs increases (an d all that space taken up in landfill). 2. Food waste collections are part of the standardised kerbside colle ct ion system for Aotearoa. Many Counci ls now have food waste co llections. This system is likely to becom e mandatory in near future 3. Producing a . consistent, nu tritious compost allow s the commun ity to grow more food. Th is further redu ced climate change, build s local resilien ce and reduces transp orted, process ed foods which are ofte n highly pack aged. .

The workshop will include new and wonderful techniques to add onto Encaustic. Each student will complete at least 3 works to take home as a perfect keepsake. Time: 10am - 3pm (lunch break) Both workshops will be held at: Location: Little Hill Studio, 49b Hills Road, Raglan Tutor: Sue MacDougall Email: kiwisuemac@gmail.com Telephone 021 023 94549 ABSTRACT – Acrylic & Encaustic ARTIST Sue Mac Dougall I am recognized for my bold and colourful work in different mediums that create structure, depth, movement and texture. Nothing excites me more than taking up my brushes and directing my energy into every stroke. This is a slow progress of building up the image, which absorbs me completely. As an artist, my temperament is the motivating factor which gives form to my passion. I find that many viewers are easily captivated by and respond to the feelings inherent in the paintings. Light is an important factor when using colours. This is why living by the sea either in New Zealand or in Greece on the island of Aegina, which is famous for the luminosity and clarity of its light, is an ideal place for a painter like me. The rugged natural landscape and beautiful, constantly changing New Zealand Coastline or Saronic Sea never fails to inspire me. The colours of a painting can be calming or stimulating and can complement all types of décor – and this, according to people who own my paintings, makes it so easy to find attractive works among my collection for all settings. My main influences come from the Blue Rider Group, the originators of abstract expressionism in prismatic colours and which included artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Gabrielle Munter.
