Sharlene Pool with her newly published guide called 'Toddler Whispering'.

T

hey say mothers can do anything, and so it proved for Raglan’s own baby whisperer on a whirlwind trip to Auckland last week. Sharlene Poole – now a mother of two – pulled off two television appearances and a livestreamed Facebook interview in a single day to launch her latest book ‘Toddler Whispering’. “I am better under pressure,” an exhausted but relieved Sharlene told the Chronicle. Starting out with an interview on TVNZ 1’s ‘Breakfast’ show, she then progressed to a live ‘OH Baby’ magazine chat on Facebook less than two hours later, having breastfed nine-month-old Tia in between. To cap off a busy day she was then a guest on Three’s ‘The Project’ that evening. Sharlene’s no newcomer to the studio setting: she once regularly shared her baby whispering techniques on TV ONE’s ‘Good Morning’ programme. Even so she was “ridiculously” nervous about appearing on ‘The Project’ in case she missed one of the quick-fire jokes.

But host Jesse Mulligan put Sharlene at ease when she was getting her hair and make-up done by asking for some tips on dealing with his 10 month old, and that got her mind in work mode. “The whole atmosphere was very friendly despite (my) earlier nerves,” she says. ‘Toddler Whispering’ is a companion guide to Sharlene’s successful ‘Baby Whispering’ book – published by Penguin in 2012 – which covered the first year of a baby’s life. Her new book covers the following four years, divided into two main age groups (1-2 and 2-5) looking at commonly asked questions from parents, plus material on everything from routines to behaviour management. Another local, Lotte Hedley, was contracted by Penguin to do the photography which includes the cover shot of Sharlene with toddler George on her shoulders at the beach in Raglan. The 43 year old has found it a challenge juggling her baby whispering business and writing a book with the demands of motherhood over the past few years.

“It’s definitely hard,” she reckons. “If the job was just phone consults and no travel it would be fine.” But Sharlene needs to do a couple of seminars in Auckland as guest speaker for the Parenting Place every (school) term to keep her profile with the new generation of mums who might’ve missed out back in 2012 when she started up. “It’s really good for business,” she insists. She still does a few private home visits around Raglan, averaging one to two clients each month. But she’s given her trademark overnight stays, which involve settling newborns and getting them into routines, a miss until Tia’s weaned. Apart from that, her over-the-phone consults and Little Miracles online presence – the website, baby blogs, Facebook and Instagram – keep business booming. The one-time preschool teacher is arguably the country’s leading baby expert with many seminars, instructional DVDs, television appearances and now two parenting guides to her credit. Edith Symes

Raglan Community Board Update

Truck Journal to feature Hartstone trucking history

A monthly column that covers key issues and happenings from the monthly Raglan Community Board meetings.

K

ia ora koutou. Our first Raglan Community Board (RCB) meeting of the year took place in February and we had a great turnout of community members who raised issues which included; freedom camping, parking, horse access on our beaches, harbour board leases, wharf funding application and the world rally. The RCB would like to acknowledge all those in attendance and it is heartening to see so many active community members with an interest in what is happening and taking time to share their thoughts. The RCB is actively following up on the issues and we will keep the community posted on the outcomes. The Board has also been team building over the past months, we have updated our engagement plan and have created a '90 Day Action Plan' to help inform us of what is coming up and what we need to do. Board members have also been given specific tasks to action and community groups/organisations to make contact with over the coming weeks, so watch this space. Getting to know your community board, come along to our 'Drop In Session' on Thursday 19th March 2020 from 5pm - 7pm at the Raglan Town Hall, Supper Room, check out our upcoming footpath schedule of works which will be happening over the next year and the speed limit changes which will be implemented from 1st July. The second stage of the Reserves Management Plan review is also coming up for community consultation at the end of March and will be open for two months. Consultation documents will

be available online and at the Council office here in Raglan, submissions can also be made via email. Management plans are produced to outline the future use, management and development (as funds become available) of reserves, for this process this includes Wainui Reserve, Manu Bay and Papahua Domain. What would you like to see happening in and around these spaces? The management plan will also provide the community with certainty about how these Raglan coastal reserves will be managed. The plan will seek to provide polices and objectives to ensure that the Raglan coastal reserves are managed in accordance with the purpose for which they was set aside, the needs of the community, and to take account of the likely needs for future generations. The management plan will identify what activities can and cannot be undertaken on the reserves. For more information come along to our drop in session or head to Waikato District Council website under 'Your Council' and public consultation. COMING UP: - Raglan Community Board 'Drop In Session' Thursday 19th March, Raglan Town Hall Supper Room 5pm - 6pm all welcome. - RCB Meeting Wednesday 1st April @ 1.30pm, Raglan Town Hall Supper Room Check us out on our Facebook page @ Raglan Community Board Find out more happenings at Council on https://www. waikatodistrict.govt.nz/events We also look forward to seeing you at our drop in session on Thursday 19th March.

T

he Hartstone family and Raglan trucking are inextricably connected and this history is the subject for an article soon to be published in the Truck Journal. Researched and written by Dave Hall, the story will follow the fortunes of the Hartstones from their early days in trucking in the 50s, before they expanded into quarrying, farming, fishing and shopkeeping. A trucking enthusiast, Dave has written over 60 stories for the journal over 20-odd years. The story which began eight years ago is now coming to fruition with the help of Jack’s son John

Hartstone and Raglan Engineering owner Peter Williams. Dave is keen to hear from anyone who has old photos, memorabilia or even memories to contribute to the story. This could also include memorabilia from WH Bates Transport from early 30s, which became Bates Transport in 1968 then Raglan Transport in 1973, before it was bought out by the Hartstones in 1974. Coastguard gets to grips with its two latest jetskis

R

aglan Coastguard volunteers Adam Daniel and James Hawken got to put two shiny new jetskis through their paces last week as part of the unit’s regular training on Wednesday nights. While not top-of-the-range machines, the 1800cc Yamaha VX Cruiser HO Waverunners are “totally suitable for our use” as rescue craft, Coastguard president Wally Hawken told the Chronicle. The jetskis can do up to 100km/h in an emergency, about twice the top speed of an IRB. Both of the Coastguard’s jetskis are always replaced after 18 months to ensure reliability, Wally adds. And while Jim Wright Nissan have generously sponsored them in the past, he says, this contract has recently ended and the Raglan unit is now trying to secure another sponsor. Each ski is typically deployed with a pilot (driver) and pillion (rescue swimmer), and is equipped with a rescue sled. Volunteers are trained

in a technique which allows them to kneel on the sled and stabilise the prone patient between their legs, Wally explains. “They are not tied on.” All operational crew are trained for vessel deployment, whether it be the jetskis or Gallagher rescue boat. Wally says he’s “amazed” at the calibre of the local unit’s volunteers, who in the past year have assisted 56 people to safety. There are currently around 20 men and women, ranging in age from their 30s through to the mid40s, training every week from the Coastguard shed at Raglan wharf. “They have huge flexibility (in what they can do) when we are tasked for a job.” While the jetskis have a specific sponsor, Wally points out the Raglan Coastguard itself could not stay afloat without the support it gets from the local community, Waikato District Council, Waikato Regional Council and Gallagher Group. COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) update, Tuesday, March 10 F or a third consecutive day, there are no additional confirmed or probable cases of COVID-19 to report in New Zealand.

To date, New Zealand has five confirmed cases based on positive test results and two probable cases. Of the confirmed cases, one patient is in Auckland Hospital and continues to improve. Planning continues for their discharge. Of the other confirmed cases, none requires hospital level care. “Protecting the health of New Zealanders is our number one priority. It’s good the key public health measures of strict border controls, self-isolation for people who have come from overseas hot-spots or been in contact with local cases have had the desired impact so far,” Director General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said. “Now is the time to be even more vigilant. Everyone can help by ensuring good health etiquette – washing hands for twenty seconds, sneezing into your arm and not touching your face. Fundamental to this is not putting yourself or others at risk if you are unwell - not going to work or being out in public if you are sick. "All of us have a role to play in stopping further spread.” North Shore hospital patient discharged The woman being cared for as a probable case at North Shore Hospital who was on a cruise of the Grand Princess (11 – 21 February) has now been discharged home and is under the care of her GP. North Shore Hospital and Auckland Regional Public Health Service are also in daily contact with the patient and the Northern Region Health Coordination Centre is liaising with her family to check on any wellbeing needs. The first of the North Shore Hospital staff stood down and asked to self-isolate as a result of this patient’s earlier hospitalisation will be returning to work tomorrow.

Other staff will progressively return. If they remain well, all staff will be back at work by Monday, March 16. There has been no impact on clinical care from these stand downs, and North Shore Hospital continues to provide all services as usual. The test result from the one remaining passenger being tested for possible COVID-19 exposure while also previously on the Grand Princess has come back negative. This passenger remains in self-isolation as a precaution. There are a number of other cruise ship movements which continue to involve New Zealanders: 4 New Zealanders are currently on the Grand Princess. We are not aware of any health concerns around these people. The New Zealand Embassy in Rome has made enquiries around MSC Opera and found that rumours of the quarantine of the vessel are unfounded. 1 New Zealander is reported on the quarantined Asara on a Nile River cruise. We are not aware of any health concerns around this individual. Testing 5 confirmed cases 2 probable cases 281 negatives 47 cases classified as under investigation Healthline & self-isolation Healthline continues to manage a large number of calls on COVID-19 and has now registered a total of 8,963 people or households for selfisolation since the process began. There are currently 2,334 registrations (people or households) for self-isolation. An additional 5,929 have completed isolation Ministry of Health

Raglan Skate Competition a hit with local groms A couple of weekends ago, on February 29, Wrong Skate Shop held a skate competition for local groms at the Raglan skate park.

Supported by sponsors Toy Machine, Spitfire Wheels and Straye Shoes, organiser Jason Beaudry from Wrong Skate said that the day went exactly as they had hoped, “Skaters came from around the Waikato but the locals took all the top spots.” said Jason. With help from his wife Sarah Steed and fellow skater Tom Mitchell on the day, Jason said that the audio system was provided by Joe Rao from Raglan Area School who bought the Soundsystem, recently workshopped by Raglan rangatahi, down to the skate park for community use. The competition focused more on street sakting rather than bowl skating which was a new focus for the groms. “Jack's run was the highlight of the day, we were all stoked to see him take the win in his final home town comp before heading off to Austrailia.” said Jason of U16 division winner Jack Meek’s performance on the day. Results: 5 and under boys 1st Matai Muru 2nd Koa Beaudry 5 and under girls 1st Aria Donaldson 12 and under 1st Mako Muru 2nd Olo Beaudry 16 and under 1st Jack Meek 2nd Elli Oconor 3rd Slyvan Welby Biggest ollie of the day: Tawhia Welby

Local Groms competed in the Raglan Skate Comp held February 29, organised by Wrong Skate Shop. Image by Manoa Beaudry, 11, who also filmed and photographed the entire competition.

U12 winner Mako Gridelli-Muru, left, and U16 winner Jack Meek.

U5 Girls winner Aria Donaldson, right, with organiser Jason Beaudry, left.

This house has certainly seen better days and an extreme makeover is required. But there is also huge potential for someone with the skills to make the most of this opportunity. Or will you demolish the existing house and build your dream home here? The location is great as it is close to town in a quiet, no exit street. Plus it is north facing and has lovely harbour views. The large, (1029m2), section is potentially subdividable, (subject to council consent), or could be developed into an amazing garden and home orchard. If you have the energy, know-how and vision to see the possibilities here call Chrissy now.

Unique harbour front properties such as this are very seldom available. The outlook here is so breathtaking with such wide views of the ever changing tides, Mt Karioi and the surrounding landscape. A rustic 70’s cottage sits nestled into the 4237m2 site enjoying the amazing outlook on offer. Energise your soul and wake up to the smell of the fresh sea air and take a stroll on the shore accessed by a grassy path. Te Uku’s Roast Office famous coffee is only 5kms away and popular Raglan is under a 15 minute drive. This really is a little piece of paradise!
