Tiny house competition winners Local art up hope more locals will think small for grabs at the Raglan Arts Weekend Preview Exhibition

he countdown has begun until Easter’s Raglan Arts Weekend, and next week sees the opening of the Preview Exhibition and 300 x 300 show at the Old School Arts Centre. Art fans, both local and visiting, will be able to get a sneak peek into what’s on offer at the Raglan Arts Weekend, with all 37 registered artists displaying two of their works for sale. One of these works is a one-off, 300 x 300mm artwork created especially for this year’s event and the other is a showcase piece of the artist’s choice. Both tend to reflect the diversity of skills of that particular artist, and the Weekend as a whole. “What makes the Preview Exhibition really special is that you can pick up an exclusive piece from a favourite artist for $200, but there’s only one per artist and so you really have to be on the ball,” says Nicky, co-ordinator of the Raglan Arts Weekend. One person who knows just how fun the Preview Exhibitions can be is Merren Goodison, a keen art lover and established Raglan ceramics artist herself. “I like to support Raglan artists and I feel really lucky that I’ve been able to take home some amazing works from Preview Exhibitions in previous years.” It’s not only about buying art: visitors will be able to discover new talent with the 13 new artists who have signed up this year. They will also be able to catch up with established favourites and see what they’ve been up to, as well as plan who they want to visit over the Arts Weekend. The Preview Exhibition will run from 22nd March until 22nd April 2019 from 10am until 3pm at the Old School Arts Centre. The Arts Weekend will be held over Easter this year from 20th to 22nd April, with artists exhibiting from their home studios and at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre. hinking small mightn’t always be seen as a positive attribute but it’s reaped one Raglan couple an exciting new business – and now a win in a nationwide contest. Chris Morrison and partner Eve Macfarlane’s 16 sq m home tucked away from the hubbub of SH23 on the outskirts of town has been voted Tiny House of the Year in an online competition run by organisers of the NZ Tiny House & Alternative Living Conference to be held in Auckland next month. It’s what Eve describes as a “humble win” – the prize being free tickets to the sold-out conference along with a $200 Mitre 10 voucher – but also a fillip for Chris’s fledgling local business. So far he has three tiny homes to his credit, all built – on trailers – at the old dairy factory in Wallis St. One is the couple’s own ingenious abode which features among other things a compostable loo, generous deck, mezzanine-like loft bedroom and a shoebox-sized wood-fired stove which saves space by sitting atop a cabinet. “We love the lifestyle, freedom and security it (the tiny house) has given us,” Chris posted last week on Raglan Notice Board in a message thanking the local community for its online votes of support. “We can vividly see this way of living to be a great alternative for our local community with the current housing/rental crisis here in our town,” he added. Chris and Eve know first-hand how hard it is to be forced out of a rental with no place to call home, and suggest landlords could add a tiny house to their property – for themselves or for an Airbnb income – freeing up family-sized houses for those in need. They themselves had to downsize into a 10 sq m shed – with no running water or electricity – on a friend’s property before

shifting 18 months ago to their tiny house, which they say felt like a mansion by comparison. Eve, a former world champion rower with a couple of Olympics under her belt and another in her sights, says the build made her realise “you actually don’t need much to be happy”. Now back in training with the Rowing New Zealand summer squad, the 26 year old relishes a lifestyle of flatting with fellow high performance athletes in Cambridge five days a week while heading out to her “happy place” to be with Chris and their cat come the weekends. “It’s a really nice balance between sport and everyday life.” Chris meantime is busy indulging his passion for woodwork which started way back as a kid building treehuts on his parents’ Hikutaia farm. A former New Zealand under-23 rower himself, Chris suffered a back injury and reckons he drove teary-eyed to Raglan to “assess” his options. And a year after mooching around doing odd jobs, he started making outdoor furniture coming into the summer of 2015.

It was “rustic” slab stuff, he recalls, then more modern indoor tables and vanities which sold online. His business, Four Leaf (as in clover), was born and building tiny houses came next. “I always wanted to do my own thing,” he told the Chronicle. Chris offers different stage options to people on the lookout for an alternative build. A tiny weather-tight home on wheels for instance, with the interior left up to the purchaser to make their mark, goes for $40,000; their own tiny home including Chris’s interior cabinetry and the added deck is priced at $95,000. “We live in ours to (get to) know our product,” says Eve. The pair also regularly use it as a showhome. The whole experience has taught them how to lessen their impact on the world. “For me it’s about being environmentally conscious,” Eve explains. “This tiny house has amplified that (concept).” They try to use and create from old, she says, foraging around at Xtreme Zero Waste for materials and trawling Trade Me. There’s also less waste in terms of having no flush loo, avoiding plastic packaging generally and working with a worm farm to establish a veggie garden. Chris sees their tiny home as a working model for Raglan. And what better place, he says, than in such a creative community. aikato District Council is taking a new and different approach to planning across the entire district. This new approach is called Blueprints and it will help bring life to Council’s vision of creating “Liveable, Thriving and Connected Communities” – “He noohanga aahuru, he iwi whai ora, he hapori tuuhono tahi”. General Manager Community Growth Clive Morgan says the Blueprint will inform major Council strategies like the drafting of future Long Term Plans while also identifying community led initiatives and projects. The drafting of the Blueprint has been a co-design approach between Council and the community, Mr Morgan says. “We’ve had great community support in getting the Blueprint to this stage and we’re now sharing the draft back with our communities to check we have captured their ideas correctly.” Workshops were held in 10 of our towns between July and

November 2018. Council heard from around 400 members of the public about what issues and ideas they had for their towns. Mr Morgan says it’s important to realise that the Blueprint might not include every idea that was raised at the workshops and it might include ideas that Council is not yet in a position to implement. “It may also include projects that Council might not fund. Frank Turner is Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade's longest serving firefighter.

ack in the day volunteer firefighter Frank Turner got away with putting out fires in jandals and shorts. Uniform regulations are one of the many changes Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade’s longestserving member has experienced in his 43-years fighting fires in Whaingaroa. “I didn’t turn up too many times in jandals,” he laughs. The 65-year-old car spray painter enlisted as a 22-year old in 1975, he was working with panel beater Denny Robertson who was volunteering at the time. “He was always going to fire callouts and I thought I would go too.” Frank remembers when he first started with the service the crew fought fires without breathing apparatus - which didn’t become part of the volunteer firefighter’s kit until the late 70s. “There was a lot of coughing and spluttering on the job.” They were actually in the business of fighting fires back then. And there were memorable ones that stick out in Frank recollections – the Raglan Wharf fire in 2010, John Hart’s garage fire and the bakery fire are a few that come to mind. The fire at Hope’s homestead up the divvy saw Frank come close to sustaining a serious work injury. “My mate just tapped me on the shoulder, I turned and took a step back and a beam dropped where I was standing,” he recalls. The crew are fighting less fires these days but the number of call outs have increased - if they were lucky, they attended 30 in a year when Frank first joined. “We’ve had 18 calls this year – one fire, a couple of cars and the rest are medical.” Which means the level of training has increased as well with the crew doing the fire service first

aid training so they can administer CPR, use the defibrillator and deal with other basic medical needs until St John can attend. Frank says a good fire makes the job and the commitment to ongoing training worthwhile. “When we do get a fire call out you get to put all that training to good use.” Health and Safety has made a big impact on the service, as well as not being able to wear jandals, Frank says, they wouldn’t get away with jumping on the back of the fire truck to attend a call out like they did on the single cab Bedford in action when he first started. “There was only room for two in the front and half a dozen holding on the back,” he laughs. Frank’s a true blue Whaingaroa man, both grandfathers farmed in Te Mata and Frank was raised on the family farm – he attended Te Mata School and went on to finish school at Raglan Area. Although firefighting wasn’t in his blood, Frank’s youngest boy Bryce followed in his father’s footsteps volunteering for the brigade before he moved to Hamilton and eventually overseas Serving the town he loves is one of the reasons Frank joined the brigade and in 2017 he received a Mayoral Community Award for his many years’ service to the Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade. Established in 1954, the brigade celebrates 65 years this year, before that Frank reckons it was a community effort to put out fires with limited resources. There’s a lot that goes into training a new cadet, not only in training hours but a new kit costs $3000 and can’t be reused when a volunteer leaves the service. The station currently has full muster and a waitlist for prospective volunteers, it’s competitive getting into the Raglan brigade. “We vet people very carefully, we don’t want transients, we need to know they are going to stay in the area.” Janine Jackson

Thundercat Racing is a high adrenaline motorsport with explosive wave jumping and tight competitive racing in a tunnel hulled inflatable boat. Boats are powered by an outboard motor with a crew of only two people who must work together seamlessly to attack waves and navigate sharp turns around the course. “Raglan has historically been a favourite for competitors given the often gnarly conditions and the overwhelming local support”, says club president Michael Graves who himself races in the Bathrooms By Elite boat. “The club has been through an evolution with a lot of new crews and

we needed to build up a certain level of experience before we could to bring such an epic event back into the race calendar”. Teams will be racing the Surf-Cross style of racing which involves a 200m x 300m ‘W’ shaped course. Surf-Cross is very popular with spectators as boats launch up to 12feet in the air over waves and action takes place close to the sand in ankle deep water. Says Graves “there will be loads for spectators and families to take in on the day with extreme racing, free Demon Energy drink for the adults and public rides once racing wraps up for the day (conditions pending).” The Thundercat Racing Association of New Zealand www.thundercatracing.co.nz is the not for profit governing body, made up of elected volunteers. What wonderful summer evenings descended on us for the whole five weeks of this session. Just perfect for playing bowls. The weeks rolled by and the challenges became very competitive as the teams vied for the top spot. Going into the final week it was anyone’s title to take. The points were so close !!! Team ‘AKA’ provided some extra sparkle for the night by being in guise behind some fascinating wigs. Good on you all. From the 15 teams participating the overall winner (with a bowler in the team) were ‘Under Cut’ consisting of Blue Stephens, Derek Morrison and James Marcum with a total of 38 points. This was a double achievement as they won the last session also… Well done there. Coming in second place with 36 points were ‘Snake Cully’. In the section with no bowler in their team the winning team was ‘Young Guns’ consisting of Craig Mitchell, Matt Curry and James Revell with 34 points… Second place was tied between ‘RD’ and ’Here 4

After having played each other, Eileen Stephens won both her games to be the Singles winner, and Maureen (Maws) Wahanga beat Pim Blair in their game, to be runner -up. Very close games these were. The men’s section was better attended with 12 participants and they played the ‘two wins to qualify’ system. Six of them qualified from section play to play on Sunday . in a very close game. The final game between Blue and Denis was equally exciting to watch. This was Blue’s first Single title and the Clubs first Octogenarian to ever win the Singles Title. Congratulations Blue. The NFD is collaborating with schools, employers and apprentice programmes, to support careers for people with hearing loss. “Captions Please ” The National Deaf Foundation is working with the Ministry of Broad Casting advocating captioning/ subtitles services for NZ television programmes. They are mandatory in the UK, Australia, US and other OECD countries. Early identification Many people live with unidentified hearing problems and the NDF focuses on early detection support and prevention. Minimizing the risk of hearing loss in the coming decades is of paramount importance as noise in the workforce and exposure to recreation al noise id in

the increase. Some people may be more susceptible that others. Hearing problems in the aging population Many elderly with hearing loss are often dealing with other issues associated with old age, visual problems, dementia, poor mobility, pain, arthritis, heart disease and previous injuries. Sometime they gradually withdraw from society unable to cope with noisy places. Frequently the are cared for by older people dealing with their own medical problems and at the same time caring for disabled family member in their own home.
