Linda, Raewyn,

In the last 30 days Raglan Police have received 96 reports. Of note are the following :

• 11 x Family Harm incidents

• 2 x Burglaries

• 9 x Vehicle Crashes including 1 x Fatal crash

• 6 x Drink Driving

It is disappointing to see that drink driving is still happening. Alcohol impairs driving. Blowing anywhere between 250 – 400 micrograms will land an adult driver with a $200.00 fine and 50 demerits on their licence. Blowing over 400 will see you in Court and definitely losing your licence for a minimum of 6 months. Under 20’s – your alcohol level is 0.

There has been a bit of found property handed in to the station over recent weeks. Some cell phones, a soft top surfboard, a pager, pounamu, GoPro, ear buds and female wetsuit.

Frequently we are locating young people wandering and loitering about town and the CBD late at night and in the early hours of the morning, often hanging around outside the licensed premises while they are operating. This is not appropriate or safe. Police have and will continue to uplift these young people where necessary. Make sure you know what your teenager is doing and that you can contact each other at any time. Many teenagers are still learning to be responsible for their own safety and wellbeing and parents/guardians need to ensure that boundaries and expectations are set and are being met.

If you would like support or advice on any parenting issue, I encourage you to ring the following helpline:

Whāingaroa turns it on with ‘great’ annual hoe

Good weather – despite a lessthan-favourable forecast – and a “fantastic turnout” in the circumstances ensured last Saturday’s Whāingaroa Hoe went off without a hitch, say organisers of what has become the longest-standing and largest clubrun iron waka ama event in the country.

With 110 teams of six on the water this year, the 27th annual hoe had a great atmosphere and got really positive feedback, says local club committee chair Sarah Harihari. While overall numbers were down on last

and opens and then two of 20km, the first for women’s or mixed teams and the final event for men’s.

Grandchildren, parents and grandparents participated in the hoe, club secretary Debbie Phillips-Morgan told the Chronicle. It was lovely to see people of all ages involved, she said, with juniors through to golden masters represented in the different divisions.

Camaraderie and competitiveness go hand in hand, she added, the event embracing as it does the concept of manaakitanga.

Both Raglan waka – the J16 and the novice teams – were lucky to place second and third

cart for families and competitors. Spectators also lined the walk bridge, jetty, and Cliff St, while Raglan wharf was another good vantage point from which to cheer the teams on.

At day’s end the Chrissy Herbert memorial trophy for first women’s waka to cross the line in the 20km race was awarded to Haeata Mama’s masters team, while the Piripi Kereopa memorial trophy for first men’s waka over the line went to the Turangawaewae senior masters team.

Pumpkins on parade at Raglan ’ s Crop Swap

Raglan’s crop swappers sized up their mighty squash at the annual Pumpkin Festival at the Raglan Bowling Club recently.

Vying for top honours for heaviest, smallest, best pumpkin art, weirdest and best pumpkin baking, young and old gardeners attended with pumpkins in all shapes and sizes, and baked into various tasty delights.

For the first time this year, awards for the largest feijoa and largest choko were also handed out.

The largest choko was grown by Crop Swap guardian Belinda Goodwin weighing in at 1.06kg.

Catherine Lee enjoyed top honours for her largest feijoa and largest pumpkin.

Baked by Belinda Thomas, a pumpkin spice cheesecake combining layers of sweet and sour cream and dulce de leche topped the baking section.

Bringing together backyard gardeners, home bakers and food foragers for swapping and sharing high quality local food on a regular basis, Belinda reckons Crop Swap is a great example of circular economies, building resilience and honouring the environment.

“As a crop swap guardian, I often hear, ‘I would love to come to crop swap and I haven't much to contribute’. My response is - get creative. We have a lady who brings chopped

banana palms, fantastic mulch and fertiliser, another man makes steel netting pins that double up as name tag holders and another person who brings cabbage tree leaves dried and tied up as fire starters.”

Crop Swap is designed to help local gardeners share their surplus and at the same time get to know people in their community.

“It's not a direct swap, we just put what we bring on the tables, introduce ourselves, then

the bell rings and we take what we want from the tables, and that's it,” Belinda says.

“Everyone leaves with something, including gardening knowledge, inspiration and the happiness that's created from socialising and sharing.”

As well as sharing the garden abundance, there is also the sharing of garden wisdom from members with many years’ experience getting the best from their patch.

“Bring along your homegrown produce, baking delights, seedlings, seeds, small fruit trees, fertiliser, gosh the list goes on. It’s amazing what we can produce with our creativity, our love of gardening and our joy of giving to community,” Belinda says.

Crop Swap is held on the first and third Sunday of the month at the Raglan Bowling Club on James Street, starting at 9.30am.

Visit Raglan Crop Swap on Facebook for more information.

Road to Raglan fully restored but not open yet

Afterdamage from the serious storm events that pummelled the North Island closed State Highway 23, the highway is poised to fully reopen in around a month’s time following finishing work.

SH23, a crucial link between Whāingaroa/ Raglan and Kirikiriroa/Hamilton was fully closed on 1 February after a serious underslip developed during the Anniversary weekend flood events.

representatives and other dignitaries were escorted on to the site for a karakia and waerea, before returning to the marae for speeches.

road, at considerable disruption to themselves. It was the only reason we could reopen to the public so quickly.

The Hon. Nanaia Mahuta, Minister for Waikato Cyclone Recovery Efforts, was delighted to attend an event to bless and celebrate the reconnection of the restored highway with Ngaati Maahanga at Oomaero Marae in Whatawhata on Tuesday.

Access was restored on 4 March thanks to a temporary diversion road around the under-slip site through private property, while geotechnical engineers investigated and planned the long-term restoration of the highway, which involved a retaining wall supported by concrete piles drilled 10m into the slope.

Now, work to restore the original highway is almost complete. The Minister, iwi

Minister Mahuta praised the mahi of the many people whose efforts combined to achieve such a swift result for the community.

“This could not have been done without the generous co-operation of the landowners, or without the herculean efforts of our work team, who put in many long hours to make this solution a reality,” she says.

“We want to recognise the significant contribution from the landowners who allowed us to create the temporary diversion

“We are delighted that SH23 is ready to reopen, restoring full road access for all traffic on this crucial link between Raglan and Hamilton, as we know how important it is to people in this community.”

When SH23 fully closed on 1 February there was no state highway alternative, and the detour routes were long, steep and winding, adding up to an hour to the journey.

Note: The original road will not be open for another month.

Living life to the fullest with Enabling Good Lives

Annie Rose has Down's Syndrome and with Enabling Good Lives (EGL) she is being given the opportunity to fulfil her dreams, goals and passions, knowing she has her good friend Olivia to enjoy those moments with.

EGL connector/tuhono Rachel Jowsey says the initiative puts Annie Rose front and centre, giving her choices and control over what’s important to her.

“Enabling Good Lives is a new approach putting the disabled person and their family first. My role is going into the families and learning all about them, their aspirations, their goals, their dreams, and then trying to remove the barriers, and connecting them with the best life that they can possibly have. It means they get to choose how they live their lives.”

For Annie Rose this looks likes hitting the waves for some boogie board action, practising her swimming techniques, boxing and more.

And her support worker Olivia, who recently graduated with a Bachelor of Population Health, is just the friend to help her make those things happen.

“We both really enjoy being in and around the water. The weather's been super lovely recently so we go to Wainui Reserve or to Whale Bay because there's a really nice opening there with grass by the water. We do some boxing and Annie Rose has really strong punch. Then we go boogie boarding, if the waves are good, or practice using fins in the water by the airfield,” Olivia says.

The pair have known each other since Raglan Kindergarten and followed each other through primary and intermediate before heading to different high schools.

“We feel so comfortable around each other. There's been

a couple of weeks where we haven't seen each other, and I miss her and she misses me. We just feel really happy that we can spend time together.”

Being the same age helps, there’s a real genuineness to their friendship.

“We have a lot of fun together and we share a lot in common with the same music tastes. It's just really natural and she's just a really good friend.”

Having a support worker who is more like a friend is gold, Rachel says.

“The introduction of Olivia into Annie Rose’s life has been life changing. They are the same age and they are friends, that (making friends) can be a struggle for these kids.”

Developed in 2011 by members of the disability community, the EGL approach guides positive change for disabled people, families, communities and governance structures.

New to the connector/ tuhono role, Rachel might be a familiar face having worked at Te Mata School for many years developing individualised plans for children with disabilities, including her son Max.

“When Max turned 16, I decided it was time to cut the apron strings. When he started at Hillcrest High I thought - right it's time for me to follow my passions - which is sharing my experience and my journey of raising a high needs child.”

EGL is available to anyone with a physical, intellectual or sensory disability. Age is no barrier with the support starting at birth and continuing till they are 65.

Rachel will be based at the Raglan Community House on the last Friday of every month from 9am-4pm.

For eligibility to access Enabling Good Lives please contact 07 957 1561 or visit www.enablinggoodlives.co.nz

Two become one as Whāingaroa Environment Centre to merge with Xtreme Zero Waste

Take part in the Amazing Race in Raglan this Youth Week

from Whāingaroa Youthworker Collective

Whāingaroa Environment Centre Incorporated Society (WEC) is going to merge with Xtreme Zero Waste Limited (XZW). The time is right for change and the benefits are many for Whāingaroa. The boards of both organisations are excited to announce that WEC and XZW will combine their strengths.

WEC and XZW were both established in the early 2000’s, and both organisations share the purpose of advancing the protection, promotion, and preservation of the natural environment. In practice, WEC focuses on natural biodiversity and XZW focuses on waste recovery and resource use.

Discussions between WEC and XZW began in late 2022 and the integration will take effect officially from 1 July 2023. For the community, there will be no changes to the work that both organisations deliver. WEC and Xtreme will continue to operate from their current locations, with the same staff and resources as are currently employed.

All services and projects will continue as currently provided. This is a decision that will largely take effect behind the scenes, but we are excited about the future of being together under one organisation and the potential to collaborate more for the benefit of our environment.

Youth Week 2023 is just around the corner and the Whāingaroa Youthworker Collective will be running a local event at the Town Hall with food, music, fun activities, youth-oriented discussions and there’ll also be an Amazing Race-style competition with great prizes up for grabs!

The Amazing Race Raglan will involve groups of youth going around Raglan’s CBD to complete tasks in a race against the clock for the top prize.

The race will be a set of challenges (riddles, puzzles and physical) to be completed around the Raglan township. Teams are to be a minimum of 3 people and maximum of 5. Someone in each team will need a device for taking photos.

Organised by Jessica Hill from Dreamview Farms, along with a number of other youthworkers from the collective, the race provides an opportunity for rangatahi to have fun and feel confident in the community.

The event will also have other fun activities, food, music and a forum to discuss youth issues.

Youth Week is a nationwide festival of events organised by young New Zealanders to celebrate the talents, passion and success of local young people.“We want Aotearoa to be

a country where young people are vibrant and optimistic and are supported and encouraged to take up challenges,” said Youth Week organisers.

The Whāingaroa Youth Week event is part of a series of programmes aimed at amplifying valuable contributions from rangatahi in Raglan and the collective hope to organise more youth events moving forward.

This year’s nationwide Youth Week theme is “Rangatira mō āpōpō? Rangatira i tēnei rā! Leaders of tomorrow? Leaders for today!” and the Youthworker Collective are keen to inspire local youth to, “take on challenges, share ideas and focus on the positive aspects of being young.”

The Whāingaroa Youth Worker Collective meet regularly to discuss opportunities to support local youth and celebrate their successes. If you would like to know more, contact Raglan Naturally on info@ raglannaturally.co.nz.

How to pay your mortgage off offset facility’

in this scenario you're only paying interest on $450,000 which reduces your monthly interest charges and goes a long way to paying your home loan off faster.

So, what does that look like in terms of actual dollar savings?

Using the scenario above, if you fixed the entire $500,000 mortgage for 1 year at 6.50% over a 30 year loan term the repayments would be around $3,160 per month.

But if we structured it to include an offset facility it would look something like this:

$450,000 fixed for 1 year @ 6.50% with payments at $2,844/m. Then a $50,000 offset facility on a floating rate at 7.50% which is linked to the $50,000 sitting in your savings and everyday accounts. Payments on this at $350/m. So total payments at $3,194/m.

The 7.50% floating rate on the $50,000 owing on the loan is offset by the money in your linked accounts; meaning that you pay no interest on that $50,000 loan provided you have $50,000 in your linked accounts. And that means that every dollar of the $350/m that you pay is paying down the principal.

The $350/m payment is based on a 30 year repayment period, but because you pay no interest thanks to the offsetting, you would pay off the loan in 12 years – even with the payment set at 30 years! This would save nearly $76,000 in interest charges compared to a normal loan repaid over 30 years.

You can really put your money to work by not only linking your own accounts but your children's and even your parents accounts if they are with the same bank and if you ask them nicely.

They still have full access to their own accounts; all you are doing is using the current balances to reduce the amount of interest you have to pay.

So, if you tend to have savings on hand and keep cash in your accounts on a day to day basis you should definitely consider having an offset mortgage as part of your overall mortgage strategy.

You can use the funds to reduce the interest but have the reassurance that they are there for whenever you need them.

There are only three banks that currently have an offset mortgage product. If you are not currently with a bank that offers this product, then now would be the time to get you properly sorted with one that does so you can truly put your money to work for you.

to the community at large.

However, to support our community we need to know what businesses need - we need to hear what the challenges are, and where we could help. The chamber board is about to head into a strategic planning session and we need input from members and the community on how we can make your business thrive, and not just survive. We know there are challenges on the horizon for businesses and we want to offer valid and valuable training and resources to help people through.

Raglan is known to be innovative, creative and solution oriented and we want to support this by strengthening community connections and relationships to encourage positive economic growth. We have one of the highest ratios of membership per capita in NZ in the Chamber network, but we know our members need to see us supporting them.

We will continue to work with Waikato District Council to learn what else is available for members to grow their business and their team’s capability, but we need to hear what else will help people at the moment, and how we can help your business and your team grow.

If you can think of any way that the chamber can assist with your business please reach out with your ideas, suggestions and comments to Lisa at lisapembertonjames@gmail.com. We are keen to hear from members and non-members alike to support growth and innovation in Raglan.

A message from Raglan Football Club

Thefootball season is under way with all First Kicks teams up and running and the Junior teams playing home & away.

We would like to thank everyone for their support getting ready for the season and for being so patient whilst we sort out missing bits of kit.

We would like to welcome new players and send out rays of postivity for those struggling in the morning motivating their kids, organising carpooling and finding the lost shin-pad (it can’t just be me!).

Things we look forward to over the next month are inter-club clusters, and our new slot on Raglan Radio called Kick Off. If your child would be keen to come On Air and talk about soccer and select some of their favourite songs, then please send the club a message on RFC Facebook. We would love to hear what are the best things about soccer, what it’s like to get gloves and goalies in the 9th grade, what it’s like to start playing away games, and what it feels like to start playing soccer for the first time. Or for any older players, we would welcome you coming and talking about your memories of Raglan Football Club and winter sport in Raglan.

Kirstin Salmon is the new go-to for POD details, please send details to her. And a massive thanks to Megan for doing this job for years!
