Public Forum The meeting opened with a packed community seating section, the majority of who were at the meeting in support of the disability parking location at the bottom end of Bow Street discussion. In the public forum section five members of the community made a passionate case for the disabled park to be retained on the footpath side of the carparking area. It was also raised about the need for a disabled parking spot near to the Papahua boat ramp. Community Board member Chris Rayner also shared with the board his experience with a disabled family member and how important disabled parking is to enable easier outings. Gareth Bellamy, Traffic Engineer from the council was also on hand to discuss the recent repaving of the carpark with the associated parking repainting. We also had an introduction to the Raglan Rock project to potentially conduct activities on the Te Akau side of the harbour. Closing out the public forum an issue with commercial operations at the Ngaranui Beach Reserve was raised now that there was no Reserves Committee to take it to. Reserves Committee and Reserves Management Plan Moving into the official portion of the board meeting there was a apology from the Mayor and the council staff for the lack of notification for the Reserves Committee disestablishment but they did go on to acknowledge the past 20 years of work done by the committee. Moving forward it is critical that the community use the current consultation of the draft Reserves Management Plan to clearly tell the council how we want to access and use our beautiful reserves and coastlines, you can also mention if you support the need for a Reserves Committee going forward. Please access the consultation on the council website. Alcohol Bylaw Review Councillor Lisa then shared with the board the results of the Alcohol Bylaw review. Thanks to all who took the time to write a submission as they do count. Going forward Raglan CBD and the area including the pump track and skate bowl at Papahua will be alcohol free all year round and the majority of the
Raglan area will be alcohol free during the summer holiday period, outside of this period the reserves including Wainui and Manu bay will be alcohol free from 9PM till 9AM. Disabled Carpark During the works and issues section of the meeting, board member Chris Rayner, tabled a motion that directed the council to reinstall the disabled carpark at the bottom end of Bow St back to the footpath. This motion acknowledged that an additional standard carpark might have to be removed to allow for full legal sized disabled carpark to be installed, the motion passed unanimously. Freedom Camping An update on Freedom camping as we are already seeing continued freedom campers arriving in Raglan even with the international borders closed. To this end the council freedom camping rangers are already out in the early hours of the morning monitoring the freedom camping bylaw compliance. We are also linking in with the Raglan Information hub as a way to educate and inform Freedom Campers. On a side note we are still looking for volunteers to staff the desk at the information hub. Member Reports and Other Updates Closing out the meeting were reports from the Chair, the Councillor and board members highlighting the significant amount of activity happening in Raglan with stormwater consent committee meeting for the first time in a year. Ongoing work on the Wharf an Places for People projects as well as the waste water consent renewal. Coming up is the State Highway 23 speed reduction consultation on the 11th of November 2pm till 7pm at the supper room and the ongoing Reserves Management Plan consultation which closes on the 7th of December please get your submissions in. FREE SESSIONS
Inkspillers (from left): Sarah, Wanda, Dyana, Merren and Matt with their latest books at Hills Rd Studios.
A
book launch with a difference at the Old School Arts Centre next Thursday promises words, whimsy, wonder and wit from no fewer than five local authors with newly published titles. There’ll be wine too as the five writers – some of them also artists – aim for an evening where lively literary discussion flows in a “salon atmosphere”. Award-winning children’s author Sarah Johnson says the group wants to replicate in Raglan something of that age-old ‘salon’ tradition in which writers celebrate and bring to life publicly their latest works. The five wordsmiths – Merren Tait, Wanda Barker, Dyana Wells, Matt Kambic and Sarah – are all part of the fledgling Inkspillers collective and, as such, support one another locally through an often difficult pathway towards publication. To have most of their eight members able to launch new books at the same time is testimony to the collective’s diligence. “We take the business of writing seriously … and try to maintain a professional focus,” explains Sarah. “We want to raise the profile of writing,” adds Wanda, also an artist who has just opened a gallery at her Hills Rd property.
The pristine white gallery-cum-studio – once panelbeater Denny Robertson’s workshop – now also showcases not only Wanda’s and other local art but also the Inkspillers’ published works. While Wanda has neither poetry nor novella on offer this time round, she is launching two books her late mother Marcia wrote and illustrated as gifts to her grandchildren. “She would be delighted that other children might enjoy them.” Wanda considered editing and updating the stories – ABC and Fantasy Land – but reckons Marcia’s ghost tapped her shoulder and said “leave them, they’re of their time”. Sarah’s latest work is a picture book, The Garden’s Secret, which will get a second launch days later at Hamilton Gardens where it is set. Aimed at children aged two to six years old, the commissioned work sets out to capture the magic of the iconic riverside gardens. The story, along with illustrations by Waikato artist Deborah Hinde, encapsulates the essence of the widely visited attraction through the eyes of a child entering each themed garden through different doors. Meanwhile Merren – whose shift from an urban to rural lifestyle last year inspired the first of a series of stand-alone novels about the good life – has now penned her second book entitled Bluffing for
FOR OVER 3’S USING THE 20 HOURS ECE SUBSIDY
Beginners, described by Amazon NZ as “a quirky romantic comedy”. Merren, who’s feeling validated as an author after winning the chick lit section of the international Indie Book Awards for her debut work The Year of the Fox, says she’s “very excited” to be launching her followup work. For something completely different, Dyana Wells has published her third and final autobiographical novel entitled My True Names. The work is based on both true sailing adventures and the mystery of the mind, an area in which Dyana has been studying Tibetan Buddhadharma for the past 30 years. In the words of Amazon: “The focus of all Dyana’s investigating and avid questioning has been to understand life and how to live well.” Finally, there are two books from awardwinning author and artist Matt Kambic: Last Voyage of the S.S. Panglossian, described as an “unusual science-fiction graphic novel” produced with colleague Matthew Kennedy from his native US; and an illustrated children’s book, The Walking Stick, produced with partner Alison Annals. *All are welcome to Five Authors Book Launch at the Old School Arts Centre in Stewart St, Thursday December 19 at 7pm.

New beach accessways protecting at-risk dunes
New dune plants have been introduced to newly formed dunes.
R
egular beach walkers may have noticed a bit of movement in the dunes near the airstrip recently. New accessways to the beach have been installed to reduce the damage to the dunes and hundreds of dune plants have been introduced to newly formed dunes. This collaborative project is part of the wider Waikato Coastcare programme which aims to protect and restore the West Coast’s precious coastal areas. Coastcare work in the Waikato is undertaken in partnership with iwi, local community, Waikato District Council, Department of Conservation and Waikato Regional Council.
Coastcare West Coast coordinator Stacey Hill says the work by the Raglan airstrip is designed with both people and the environment in mind. “This isn’t about restricting people from the beach. We still want people to connect to their coast and enjoy this environment. The work will allow areas that have suffered from lots of foot traffic to recover.” In addition to the new walkways and plantings, Waikato District Council is installing more permanent fencing and signage to direct beach visitors to the new accessways. “It’s super important that we all stick to these tracks. Although coastal
Accessways will protect the dune plants that have been planted recently.
plants are tough enough to live in this harsh environment, they’re also very fragile and can be destroyed by foot traffic – just walking on spinifex can kill it,” she says. This season’s restoration works have seen over 7500 coastal plants put in around Raglan by Te Uku School, NZ Post, Raglan Coconut Yogurt and amazing individual volunteers from the community. Stacey says the plantings are designed to stabilise loose foredune areas and recreate native coastal ecosystems through backdune plantings of native grasses, shrubs and trees. Janine Jackson

Raglan Bowls Club wins shield
R
aglan Outdoor Bowls Club summer season has got off to a rollicking start with 25 players turning out on opening day. The highlight of the season to date was last Saturday’s effort by Raglan to win the Northern Zone Interclub Challenge shield. Although Raglan have been frequent
winners over the history of the competition between Huntly, Ngaruawahia, Raglan and Taupiri clubs they hadn’t lifted the shield since 2014, so the win was very satisfying.
There have been 3 club competitions so far this season with the Tom Stephens Triples won by Bob Carter, Alex Lorenzen and John Carr. The Mixed Singles was impressively won by first year bowler Robin Pipe, while Eileen Stephens was too good for the rest of the field in the Mixed Vet Singles. The club’s first open tournament on October 22nd which was generously sponsored by our local Ray White Real Estate office was won by the Hillcrest team skippered by Steve Liddington. Twilight bowls got underway on Tuesday night with a great turnout of
enthusiastic locals for a night of music and bowls. More teams and players can be accommodated and you can just turn up at 5.45pm to join in. If locals or visitors want to join our club or give bowls a go simply come along at 1pm on a Wednesday or Saturday to our roll ups, everyone is welcome and loan bowls are available. Club memberships start from as little as $20 so come and enjoy the camaraderie of outdoor bowls. To find out more phone Alan 021456751 or Gordon 0274454876. Shield winners Eileen Stephens, Ross Turner, Robin Pipe, Maureen Wihonga, Alan Price, Jack Peel and Maurice Pruden

Open to the public, the society president Geoff Pownall says it’s a perfect opportunity to get more than a peak over the garden wall of some of the top garden’s in Whaingaroa. “This year we have 10 gardens on display and seven of those will have local artists exhibiting their work.” Each garden has its own distinct theme; from rocks and more rocks at Margaret Hayes rockery in Te Mata, a fernery and forest at Colleen and Tony Moore’s patch on Puriri St, to a food forest dream at Delwyn and Brian Wilson’s garden on Norrie and a children’s quiz at Bruce and Sharon Coull’s hillside terraces on Te Hutewai. “There’s’ something for everyone, with gardeners sharing their knowledge as well as sharing their beautiful gardens,” Geoff says. With many old favourites back and some new ones in the mix, the gardeners are collecting a koha, which they will donate to a charity of their choice. Geoff and wife Lis’s are having a plant sale and offering afternoon teas from 1.30pm at their cottage garden on Nihinihi. Avid gardeners, the pair came to Raglan in 2013 and quickly got involved in the horticultural society; it was around this time the society’s garden rambles were springing back to life. “The Garden Ramble shows off such a variety of gardens, from large open areas to hidden secret spots full of colour,” Geoff says. As guardians of Raglan’s Crop Swap they also put their green-fingers to good use in the
vegetable garden, which they share at the swap on the first and third Sunday of the month. Nearly 120 years old, the Raglan Horticultural Society has a long history of garden rambling, flower and vegetable competitions and various displays. Geoff says new members are welcome to join them on the third Tuesday of the month at 1pm at the Stewart St Church Hall, where there is guest speakers and a sharing of what’s vibing in the garden. Pick up your Garden Ramble guide at the Raglan Library, I-site, Raglan Community House, local shops and on the Raglan Horticultural Society facebook page. Janine Jackson

What is the name of your club and your position? My position is Sensei or Teacher. Tell us a little about your recent event? The events were Gassuku training camp,National Championships and a grading. These events are usually individual however because of COVID there hasn’t been any held during the year so it was decided to bring it all together over Labour weekend In Turangi. Two days of training then a competition and grading on the Monday. Who participated in the Gassuku? Raglan had eight attendees in the training, which is two 2 hour sessions and one 3 hour session ending with 1000 techniques, doing one chosen technique 1000 times. Competition was the following day Sunday and Raglan did very well with 2 of our students getting two silver medals.
Monday was the grading with two of our foundation students attempting their shodan (blackbelt) grade and all of the students participating in the grading/ training that turned out to be 4 hours long. Both girls, pictured left and right in the photo, Kayla Stockman Bond and Crystal Goodwin-Metz were successful in the grading and are TSKF Raglan's first blackbelts after training for five years. We would like to thank Raglan Area School for letting us use the gym for training. Training times Tuesday 5.30 Beginners / 6.15 advance Thursday 5.30 Beginners / 6.15pm advance.
