New movement #ragsunwrapped Have you ever walked into a supermarket and wondered why all the fresh fruit and vegetables are wrapped in unnecessary plastic packaging? On the 15th of November, five students from Raglan Area School will be hosting a movement called #ragsunwrapped at the local FourSquare and SuperValue. Our idea is simple: when you get to the checkout, unwrap all excess packaging from your groceries and LEAVE IT ON THE TILL. This way the supermarkets are forced to deal with their plastic waste, instead of you going home and having to deal with it. The movements aim is to get

rid of excess plastic in our supermarkets, and spread the message that our supermarkets need to take responsibility for the amount of plastic they are distributing, and which companies they are supporting. Our aim is to make the local supermarkets have “nude aisles,” which means having absolutely zero plastic per aisle. New Zealand produces more than 15.5 million tonnes of plastic waste every year, and right now we are only recycling 28% of it. Come down to the FourSquare or SuperValue on Friday the 15th of November, and support us by participating in the movement and signing our petition for nude aisles in Raglan supermarkets! Raglan couple fly to Congo to aid in fight for rare gorilla

F

rom eco-retreat to eco-warriors deep in the jungle – it’s all been quite an upheaval for former Solscape owners Phil McCabe and Bernadette Gavin, who for the past week have been in Central Africa on what they describe as a “life-changing” mission.

They were there to help assess the potential for a mini eco lodge in the Congo, staying in a remote village near the conservation area of the threatened eastern lowland gorilla. While Bernadette has long wanted to visit Africa for follow-up work of hers in animal rehabilitation, for Phil the experience was very “different” from a recent sailing trip to look at seabed mining in the Pacific and way beyond what he’d ever imagined for himself. “It was deep Africa and just amazing!” he told the Chronicle from Qatar on Monday before flying on home. But at the same time the once strife-torn Congo (formerly called Zaire), which has a population of 80-odd million really needed outside help, he added. With time on their hands since passing Solscape – their eco retreat of 17 years – to new owners back in April, the couple have been looking around for other causes “that make a difference” and capitalise on their own eco skills, says Phil.

So they jumped at the chance to visit Central Africa with friend and fellow environmental crusader Peter Eastwood of Tanglewood Foundation NZ – which provides funding for conservation and education projects around the world – even though it meant leaving teenage daughter Sequoia back home studying for her final exams at Raglan Area School. As former chair of communitybased action group KASM, Phil says he was once grateful for Peter’s help in lodging an appeal against proposed seabed mining along the west coast. “Peter heavily supported KASM in times of need,” he says. Now the Raglan couple are in turn keen to support his foundation’s initiatives in the Congo, where significant work is underway to protect the gorilla habitat. It’s an isolated area suffering “serious hardship”, but one which is gradually achieving change through the Pole Pole Foundation, a non-governmental organisation created by local inhabitants in and around the Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Four million trees have been planted as a buffer zone around the national park, Phil explains, to help prevent local rampages for firewood and bush meat. A school and a spirulina initiative have also been funded to support conservation work in the area, and now on the Pole Pole (meaning ‘slowly slowly’ in Swahili) wish-list is an eco lodge to house visitors who come to see the critically endangered subspecies of gorilla.

Phil and Bern with silverback gorillas in South-East Congo. As Bernadette explains: “Once the villagers understand gorillas are special and bring in money, they’ll value them.” On the plus side the couple were impressed with environmental achievements in Rwanda, which borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Phil describes the country as “the Switzerland of Africa” with a policy of no plastic bags and “phenomenal” wholecountry clean-ups undertaken the last Saturday of every month. “It’s come a long way in 25 years,” he says, referring to the horrors of the Rwandan genocide.

Phil and Bernadette will be back at Solscape next week along with Peter, who will talk about the work in Africa by the Tanglewood Foundation and its travel subsidiary DTours. “Peter gives people a safe and interesting experience in Africa, with meaning,” Phil insists. “And his trips support good causes.” Edith Symes Peter Eastwood’s presentation will be held in conjunction with Solscape’s curry night on Monday November 18, from 6.30pm. Open to all.

Locals advance through prestigious international surf event

F

rom the 26th of October to the 3rd of November, Raglan Surf academy students Jayden Willoughby, Caleb Cutmore, Brie Bennett, Tom Butland, and Jack Lee competed in a huge international event - the Vissla Junior Surfing Championship.

This competition was held at Huntington Beach, USA, and was a very challenging and rewarding event. It is aimed directly at youth, with ages ranging from 13

to 18 years. To enter, participants must commit to 5 months of dedicated training and practice. They are required to attend physical training throughout the majority of the year. As the competition loomed nearer, the students were pushed to their limits 10 weeks prior to the big competition, so that they were in peak physical shape. Coach Larry Fisher helped Raglan’s team to prepare and train, as well as accompanying them over the 8 days. Each heat consists of four surfers, and finding waves did not always come easy for the

FREE SESSIONS

surfers. “In some heats, it took awhile to get the best waves, but I made it so that’s the main thing.” says Jayden Willoughby after completing his final heat. As well as waiting for waves, one of the main challenges the students faced was nervousness, which negatively affected their performance. Some of the competitors were given another unexpected challenge, as the tide lowered and the currents advanced, and the waves were hard to find a turn in. Raglan’s team consists of 5 students each year, and to get a place, the Junior Surf Academy

students must try their hardest in the upcoming national summer competitions. Willoughby, Bennett, Butland, and Lee will all be eligible for the team in 2020. “The next steps for these students is to keep improving and entering national and international events to gauge their potential to make it as a professional surfer.” says Larry Fisher. The Raglan competitors thoroughly enjoyed their experience this year, and some have already started training for next year’s competition. Ayla Standley, Raglan Area School

Te Ropu Aroha Ki Te Reo sculpture unveiling

B

ased at Raglan Area School, Te Rōpū Aroha Ki Te Reo was established in 1989 with a roll of around 20 students. Te reo Māori at the primary school was introduced to cater to the tamariki coming from kohanga reo. In the beginning, English was spoken in the mornings and reo Māori in the afternoons. Now full immersion with four classrooms, Te Rōpū Aroha Ki Te Reo celebrated 30 years this year. Former and current students, staff and whānau gathered at Labour weekend for a 30th celebration of Te Rōpū Aroha Ki Te Reo and a sculpture was unveiled. Carved by Te Rōpū Aroha old boy and local sculptor Simon Te Wheoro, the sculpture stands sentry at the gateway to Te Rōpū Aroha Ki Te Reo.

Named Hei Kaki, the sculpture represents a pendant, and the motifs and designs symbolise many aspects of the school from the journey of the students through the many levels of learning and the dedication of the kaiako (teachers), to the striving for excellence and the coming together as one. Unveiled by current students Taimānia Te Wheoro and Waiariki Te Pania, the sculpture was blessed by kaumatua Russell Riki and Sean Ellison. The basalt rock used for the sculpture was sourced by Simon from the landscaping at the entrance near where the sculpture sits. Having trouble with the design, Simon came to the school looking for inspiration. “I came to the school to look at the site, and looked down and saw the rock.” In that moment, Simon had found his sculptural medium and his inspiration was to be found in the wairua of the school.

Raglan Area School deputy principal and Te Rōpū Aroha Ki Te Reo leader of learning Quenten Browne says the school had its beginnings at the community level and continues to flourish with the community’s ongoing support. “The 30-year celebrations have confirmed that the learning has been an asset for the graduates in their pathways in life.” Success stories include Olly Coddington who won fame as a Mai Time presenter, I AM TV and producing television reality show Game of Bros and Kara Rickard a George FM breakfast host and SKY Sport presenter. “Many of our learners also represent their local marae, hapū and iwi,” he says.

Quenten also points out that all the Te Rōpū Aroha Ki Te Reo students have benefited in many ways and being bilingual is an asset in itself. Scientific research has found that bilingual students have many advantages, including better memory and attention, increased creativity, ability to switch between tasks easily and score higher on intelligence tests. Te Rōpū Aroha is open to all students and there is currently one Pākehā family on the roll. “We are open to anyone who wants to embrace te reo and tikanga Māori,” Quenten says. Janine Jackson

Raglan coach, Graham Wallace is a co coach of the Roller Mills team. What was it like having him as a coach? Graham (Scallop) was the forwards coach. He was real good, He spoke positively towards the forwards we had good structure in attack & defence. I really enjoyed having Scallop as my coach. Would you like to thank a few people that have supported you with your rugby over the years? Yes Mum and Dad for driving me to trainings and games and all my coaches. What do you hope to achieve moving forward with your rugby? Next year I hope that Raglan Area High School will have enough rugby players for an u14 team and I continue to play good rugby so I get selected for more rep teams.

CELEBRANT This week the Chronicle caught up with Belinda Goodwin, Nia Dance instructor. Tell us about Nia Dance. How did it originate and why? Nia is an acronym for Neuromuscular Integrative Action. Nia dance began in Oregon USA in 1980. Nia dance technique is a fun, dynamic movement practise that leaves you feeling energised and alive. Blending the latest neuroplasticity science with ancient wisdom from kinesiology and martial arts, Nia educates dancers to approach life and their bodies in a holistic manner, infusing love, joy and a refreshed sense of body awareness. When did you become involved? When I first began to dance Nia six years ago I had very little dance background however I quickly fell in love with the challenge of learning the choreography and the happiness that came from social connections kept me wanting more. What classes do you offer in Raglan? I currently offer a classic Nia for everybody at Raglan Town Hall on Wednesdays at 9:30 am. Our Raglan Nia dancers love an opportunity to feel the sun on our skin and the grass beneath our feet and we very much enjoyed a beautiful outdoor session on Wednesday the 6th of November at Oram Park.

Adored folk artist, Sneaky Bones hits town next week

R

aglan locals are set for a very special night when Acclaimed US multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter and adored folk artist, Sneaky Bones hits town, playing at The Old School Arts Centre on Sunday 24th November!

Europe (Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway). The release tour received critical and audience acclaim, not only selling out rooms in Norway and Germany, but also selling out their stock of physical copies (LP and CD) while on the road. Bean has been spreading the waters of folk, country, rock, grunge and soul in songs that are daring and ambitious but sound effortless. His live shows have been hailed as transcendent throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Scandinavia and New Zealand, and now he’s released his masterful third album, a multi-genre-spanning trip. On one hand, Bean is retracing and re-framing the roots of folk, country, rock, grunge and soul because he loves the music madly, but on a deeper level, he filters their influence – adding his own magical force along the way – and in the process pushes the music forward.

Matthew Bean, who writes and performs under the pseudonym Sneaky Bones, returns to NZ for his second epic nationwide tour, this time with the full band! The band will set out on tour across New Zealand to support his recently released third full-length record – Strangers I’ve Already Met. Bean will be joined in NZ by Marshall Wildman on drums and Austin Webb on bass and guitar. Strangers I’ve Already Met was released on May 17 with a month of full band shows across

Trade Aid volunteer Hazel Lewis with some upcycled jute shopping bags. et your sewing skills to the ready for Trade Aid’s Jute Bag Revamp Competition and turn a boring jute shopping bag into a work of art.

Hazel is a keen ‘upcycler’ giving sad, unloved clothing a face lift and turning them into beautiful, quirky pieces. “Upcycling makes something more interesting and the jute bags are the ideal blank canvas to let your imagination run wild. It’s a great way to give something a new lease of life and sometimes making it more beautiful than it was originally.” The bags are sourced from CORR – The Jute Works who work with over 4,000 rural and indigenous women facing severe poverty. CORR provide training in production skills, environmental protection and rights’ awareness to become self-reliant. Janine Jackson The bags cost $7 to purchase and will be judged in two age groups – 6-10 and 11-15. The most creative bags will win a $30 Trade Aid voucher and runner-up a $10 voucher. Competition closes on Saturday, December 14.

The competition is open to the young creatives and shop manager Donna McGough says the bags would make great Christmas presents, perfect book bags for avid readers or for taking down to the beach or to the park. “It’s an easy and fun way to teach children how to sew. This is exactly how I learnt.” Judged by Raglan Upcycling Co-op member and Trade Aid volunteer Hazel Lewis and Raglan district councillor Lisa Thomson, the pair are looking for creativity, imagination and upcycling flair in the designs. “The idea is to use what you have got at home or items you could scavenge at Kaahu’s Nest,” Hazel says.

Matthew Bean, aka Sneaky Bones will be playing at The Old School Arts Centre on the 24th November
