n the last month, Raglan Police has received 68 reports, including: • •

8 x Family Harm incidents 12 x Burglaries – some of these also include several vehicles that were stolen from driveways • 4 x Unlawfully Takes Motor Vehicles – vehicles parked in public places • 4 x Vehicle crashes – also with intoxicated drivers • 3 x Drink Driving Police were called to a water rescue job yesterday for a very serious incident out on Raglan bar. Seventeen people were on board a charter boat that was swamped by a large wave whilst crossing the bar. One person was swept off the boat into the sea and was located over an hour later after activating an EPIRB – Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon. He was in a bad state when located and had it not been for the EPIRB activation, possibly would not have been located alive. He was airlifted by rescue helicopter to Waikato Hospital. The rest of the passengers and crew were successfully brought back to Raglan Wharf where they were treated by ambulance staff and local doctors for less serious injuries. A big shout out to our Raglan Volunteer Coastguard jet ski crews who went out over the large swells to search for, locate and successfully recover the crewman. Also Raglan Surf Lifesaving who assisted with searches and then gave first aid and warmth to the injured man once he was back on shore.

These volunteers, along with our local Community Patrol, Fire and Ambulance volunteers, put their lives on the line each and every time they are called out. They do not always know what there are going to, but they go anyway. They are the best and we should all celebrate and congratulate the great work they do. We should be grateful for the time and commitment they give to keep our town safe. If you would like to become a volunteer, please make contact with any of the groups mentioned for more information. Summer is approaching. Time to get your water based equipment up to scratch. Life jackets are of course, a must have, but also consider purchasing a personal EPIRB. Great for hikers or trampers too that may go off the beaten track and require locating. Just a reminder of the 24/7, 365 day a year alcohol ban in the CBD and surrounding streets. Breaches can be dealt with by Police by way of a $250.00 infringement notice or by arrest for Breach of Liquor Ban. Summer motoring brings its own challenges with more day trippers coming out to the beach for the day in the weekends and more vehicles in town. We will be taking a zero tolerance approach to the main causes of vehicle crashes - RIDS – being Restraints (not wearing seat belts or having unrestrained children in vehicles), Intoxication, Distraction (using cell phones whilst driving) and Speed offending. Please stay safe and enjoy the warmer weather and longer daylight hours.

et in quick for the RAW Opening Cocktail Night at Rock-It.

The Raglan Arts Weekend (RAW) is nearly upon us and this year, for the first time ever, an opening Cocktail Reception at Rock-It kicks off the weekend's activities. Interested guests better get in quick, as only 18 tickets are left, and need to be snapped up before 12 October. 100 guests will be accommodated at RockIt at the ticketed event for a few drinks and 'walk-and-fork' dinner. It will be a casual gathering and a celebration for the artists after a lot of hard graft preparing for the weekend where thousands of visitors and art aficionados flock to Raglan to be inspired by the creative talent in the town.

"We couldn't have done this without a longterm partnership which we've set up this year with Bayleys Real Estate in Raglan," says Nicky Brzeska, RAW coordinator since 2019. "We're working closely with them, getting them in front of new people, and in turn, getting promoted through their extensive nationwide channels; it's a win-win really." The event is being branded 'Artist-Connect' and is preceded by another RAW 'first' – a bus tour for registered RAW artists to visit other RAW artists ahead of the weekend itself. "This is the direct result of artist feedback from our post-RAW artist surveys over the past 3 years, as well as conversations we've had with lots of our artists," says Nicky. "It's tricky for them to meet other artists, or see what other studios are up to, as they

Nicky hopes that this partnership with Bayleys will help artists connect with their peers, learn from what other studios are doing, and just share any concerns - and excitement - ahead of the weekend. Mark Frost from Bayleys Raglan adds, "Bayleys Raglan is proud to support the Raglan Arts Weekend and its mission to showcase the incredible talent within our community, fostering connections and inspiring creativity."

For those interested in attending the opening cocktail night and a chance to meet the artists ahead of the weekend, head to the RAW web site to buy tickets. Raglan Community Arts Council: Old School Arts Centre restructuring and update

A

well-attended Raglan Arts Weekend preview opening this week has Raglan Old School Arts Centre (OSAC) staff and Raglan Community Arts Council (RCAC) committee members hoping the muchloved organisation has turned a corner after four financially challenging years.

The RAW preview attendance, which far exceeded RAW Coordinator Nicole Brzeska's (Nicky) expectations, followed on from a successful monster garage sale the previous weekend which raised close to $5000 for the OSAC operational budget. RCAC chair Rodger Gallagher said emerging from the pandemic the organization had found itself facing severe financial challenges. "Hopefully with summer around the corner, and some great initiatives on the

go, we will be able to continue to serve the Raglan arts community. Like many community organisations, RCAC has had to face the reality of a fall in financial grants. However, we have proactively restructured our organization and are now confident we are in a stable position. We do now have a lower capacity for some activities and we ask the community to appreciate that."

OSAC visitors will notice some changes. Manager Jacqueline has moved into an independent contractor role, with initial responsibility for the Raglan Film Festival. The office is staffed by part-timers Maxine King (Accounts & Administration) and Shona Butchart (Marketing & Support). Other part-timers, Penni Bousfield and Deb King continue in their respective roles of Music coordinator and Market coordinator.

While the factors driving the housing market activity have shifted with the seasons, there’s one thing you can count on. With a unique blend of expertise, international networks and a suite of innovative marketing tools, Bayleys is the agency for all your property needs.

Wairua lives on in posthumous exhibition by Janine Jackson

Irving whanau, Raglan 1990s.

Geoff and son Raj.

W

ood sculptor Geoff Irving lost his battle with cancer last year but his wairua lives on in the stunning creations he brought to life. A posthumous exhibition during the Raglan Arts Weekend is a chance for Geoff’s whānau to celebrate and share his imaginative artistry, and hopefully find new homes for the work he lovingly made. In his Facebook bio, Geoff says – ‘Wood is my canvas. The lathe, bandsaw, router, drills, sanders, blow torch, spray cans and a host of other tools are my brushes.’ Working in forestry and cabinetmaking factories in New Zealand, and building sites in Sydney as a young man, Geoff grew to love working with wood. Son Raj Irving – who lives in the house his father built on Marine Parade and is himself a gifted carver - says his dad’s work reflected community, and bringing people together through art was an important part of his philosophy. “It felt like his art had a purpose and he’d like to see it go to people. And if I could sum it up, I think his work is about people at the end of the day.” The pair had long considered collaborating in an exhibition for the arts weekend, and

while that opportunity has passed now, Raj says it will be a fitting tribute to his father to let his work see the light in the town he loved. “My mum keeps on saying, Dad didn't want his art to sit around and collect dust.” Geoff had a deep-seated affinity with Raglan. He was the Raglan Area School woodwork teacher from 1985 to 1998, but before that he had holidayed in Raglan as a kid like many Hamiltonians. Raj, Esther and Thibah spent an idyllic childhood in Raglan before the family moved to Australia to be closer to their mum Leela’s family. They spent 10 years in Australia, where Geoff worked as a design and technology teacher and, Raj says, they got a taste of city life. They returned to live in Hamilton in 2010 and Geoff got a job teaching woodturning, wood and bone carving at Ngāruawāhia Primary School. Raj says he was a gifted teacher who cared about his students, and he wasn’t too keen in just teaching ‘industry’ wood-working skills. In turn, his students appreciated the sense of freedom and openness they got from attending his classes. “A lot of his students always say they were grateful for my dad allowing them to have

their own freedom and expression. He really valued that type of expression in his work. He was so against the grain in terms of prepping them for industry, he was always more about their own creative expression.” His journey as an artist really started taking root when they returned to New Zealand. “He was always on the lathe but he started to really take a path as an artist, whereas before it was always combined with his teaching,” Raj says. It was while teaching at Ngāruawāhia that his love of Māori arts was reignited and it became a prominent feature in his work. He took his role as a Kiwi artist seriously, saying in his bio – ‘Aotearoa/New Zealand is discovering its own rich cultural heritage. Artists play an important provocative/ reflective role in the Māori renaissance and the redefining of Kiwi identity.’ Much of his storytelling through artwork and exhibitions blended his Bahá’í Faith and his love for te ao Māori; Geoff felt the two shared the same wairua. “A lot of his art was about trying to find truth,” Raj says. Geoff had always lived an adventurous life and had grown up with a father who was a tough man, which led to him seeking another way of life.

“My dad ran away from home at 16 or 17 and went on his own path. He wanted to travel and get away.” This was the ‘70s and his wanderlust took him to Southeast Asia and Europe, and during that time he was introduced to the Baháʼí Faith. He also met his wife Leela in Singapore; an Indian Hindu by birth, she had also become a Baháʼí, which is what brought them together. They spent four years apart, Geoff working in Australia and Leela in Singapore. Raj thinks it may have been a ploy by her family to dissuade the couple from marrying. He was sending her letters every week with fresh carnations, trying to keep the fire burning. They must have been truly in love,” he says. Along with his love for Leela and his whānau, Geoff also had a deep love for Whāingaroa, and described himself as - ‘an artist/sculptor who lives in Hamilton, works in Ngāruawāhia and relaxes in Raglan, New Zealand.’ It’s fitting that his art will be exhibited in the granny-flat he built on Marine Parade. Exhibition open from Saturday, October 21 and Sunday, October 22 at 8A Marine Parade.

Surf Life Saving Northern Region respond to serious incident at Raglan

S

urf Life Saving Northern Region (SLSNR) has warned beachgoers to be aware of significant hazards following two serious incidents at west coast beaches within the Northern Region this morning, Sunday 8 October. One of these incidents occurred at Raglan.

At Raglan, surf lifeguards supported the Coastguard response to a boater being washed overboard as the boat he was on crossed the Raglan bar. SLSNR Lifesaving Operations Manager James Lea has highlighted that both incidents very nearly resulted in loss of life and could easily have proven fatal had the response from surf lifeguards and other emergency response services not been so timely. "Both these incidents took place in particularly dangerous conditions, in three metre swells. We cannot stress enough that

people need to be aware of the conditions, and understand just how quickly they can change. We urge the public to exercise some situational awareness, read the weather forecast, and exercise some common sense: If in doubt, stay out," he said. At Raglan, surf lifeguards assisted Coastguard New Zealand and the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter in responding to an incident involving a boat crossing the Raglan bar in large swell at approximately 8am. A boat passenger on what is understood to be a charter boat was washed overboard, with reports the boat was hit by a large wave. The person was rescued from the water by the Coastguard, however had a head injury, a broken finger, and serious hypothermia, and was in need of urgent medical attention. Ambulance services administered first aid once the patient was returned to shore, and they also provided first aid treatment to the

five other people aboard the boat who were also injured. The surf lifesaving patrol season commences from Saturday 21 October (Labour weekend), with regular weekend patrols conducted by volunteer lifeguards. Weekday lifeguard services within the Northern Region commence from Monday 20 November at Muriwai and Piha, and Monday 27 November at Raglan. 2023-24 Season Beach Safety Messages from Surf Life Saving New Zealand: 1. Know How To Float If you don't know how to float, don't go in the water. Too many people get into trouble in the water because they overestimate their abilities. 2. Find The Safest Place To Swim If you're heading to the beach, check safeswim.org.nz, find a lifeguarded beach, and swim between the red and yellow flags.

3. If In Doubt, Stay Out Waves can be bigger than they look, and weather conditions can change quickly. If you feel uncomfortable about getting into the water, stay out. 4. Take Care of Others Always keep children within arm's reach in or near the water. Waves can move quickly and unexpectedly and can sweep kids away or knock them off their feet. Everyone has different levels of ability, so watch out for your mates too. 5. Know How to Get Help If someone in the water is in trouble and surf lifeguards are on patrol, let them know. If you can't see any surf lifeguards, call 111 and ask for police. If you're in the water and in trouble, signal for help.

Patience to bloom in Raglan A celebration of

W

akatipu Tahuna based Mirai brings forth heart stirrings, contemplations and reflections woven into songs as a way of alchemizing lived experiences.

'Patience to Bloom’ - her tour reaches Raglan on the 3rd November at the Old School. We caught up with Mirai to learn more. You have previously lived in Whaingaroa so many will remember you as Miki. Can you tell us the story behind your name change? Yes, Raglan feels like a home away from home (Queenstown) for me. It was the first place I moved to, fresh out of High School when I was 17. My mother is Japanese and she moved to New Zealand when she was 29; she adopted a new culture, language and life here in NZ with minimal English vocabulary. I guess as I stepped into the age she was when making those massive life transitions it pulled me into deep reflection of the strength and bravery she held in her choices. My mum would tell me that

she didn't know if she would get married or have children one day but if she had a daughter she always loved the name Mirai. My name Miki is n Japanese Kanji, which is Mirai. spelt So I have changed my name to its origin in honour of my mother, my Japanese heritage, and to respect my cultural diversity. Tell us about your intimate tour around Aotearoa. Patience to Bloom is the name of my intimate tour and it's really an unveiling and acknowledgement of the processes I have been navigating over the last couple of years. Putting my reflections and experiences into song writing allows me a safe space to be with, pull apart, reflect and alchemise these experiences with a shift in perspective. On my tour I will be going to different towns/ cities around Aotearoa that have been part of my journey and it feels like my way of giving back to these communities that have welcomed me in so warmly even though my gypsy spirit doesn’t stay planted in one place for long. How would you describe your sound? Great question. I struggle to put my style into a box of one specific genre. I’ve been listening to quite a bit of Soul, R&B, Jazz and Indie-Folk so that would be a mash up of my current influences, including Lianne La Havas, Nai Pal, Yazmine Lacey, Cleo Sol, mmm I love Neo Soul! What do you treasure and value about the Raglan area now that you have travelled beyond? There are so many things I treasure about Raglan. I love that when I come back to visit there are so many friendly familiar faces around and people take the time to stop and have a korero in the streets. The openness to alternative living and support for local art and diversity. Sitting out at Manu Bay listening to the songs of the ocean and watching surfers in the setting sun. I am really looking forward to visiting and having a kai at ULO’s with friends! What is happening for you after the tour? High hopes and dreams to get over to Europe and travel some more. Immerse in new cultures, languages and explore remaining curious to life.

A

top the hill looking down on Wainui Beach among the flax and landscaped gardens sit the Four Directions Sculptures – four sculptures carved out of Hinuera stone.

On July 28th of this year sculptor, artist, and loving friend Nici Palmer, who carved the South stone of the four directions alongside fellow artist Che Rogers, became gold dust in the heavens. Nici remained her loving and beautiful self until the end of a short but tough fight against a rare and aggressive brain cancer. Nici dedicated her life to art, and particularly sculpture – becoming a well known, and accomplished hard stone sculptor, working in pounamu, marble and Taranaki andesite. Her large pieces have been collected across Aotearoa, and the smaller taonga she crafted from pounamu, particularly her famous ‘Pipi’ are treasured by those who have them.

with loan bowls. The day kicks off at 11am with some practise and coaching, followed at midday with burgers for lunch and an opportunity to meet our current members. We will then play a game of 8 ends with new players mixed in with more experienced club members. Everyone is then invited to experience the amazing conviviality of the club with a happy hour in the clubrooms. Bowls is a sport for everyone. It doesn’t demand a high level of fitness and it’s a game known for its emphasis on social engagement and fun. Many of last year's participants went on to play twilight bowls, which this year starts on November 7th, or have joined the club on a more full time basis. We are very flexible membership-wise with options to play as little or as much as you wish. If you want to come to our Burgers and Bowls day please phone Alan Price on 021 456751 or Coleen Parkes on 021 0719687 by 13/10 to help with catering.

On the Saturday of Labour weekend at 3pm there will be a gathering and ceremony at the stones to celebrate Nici’s wonderful life. Friends will gather to honour her, love her, and most of all celebrate her, as we acknowledge her too early exit from our lives. If you loved Nici please come and gather together. Bring yourself, your memories, maybe some words or a song, and also a small ‘touchstone’, which you can hold during this time, and leave behind in an ipu taonga ( created from an offcut of the original sculpture) to be buried at the base of the stone. If you would like to offer something specific to the celebration we would like to hear from you, so that there can be space to honour everyone’s contributions. Nici had many talented friends, and everyone is welcome to add shape to this day. There will be a kaitahi, and evening of music after the celebration. Bank left the Official Cash Rate on hold again for the third consecutive time since they last increased it on May 24th. They have however changed their commentary from a holding pattern to one that may require another increase if the inflation figures due out on October 17th don't continue to head in a downward direction. (Funny how everywhere else in the world inflation figures are monitored on a monthly

basis, but we hold our breath for 3 months before getting an update). Every month there are more mortgages rolling off low fixed rates and it's our belief they won't need to increase rates again on November 29th at the next OCR announcement. The percentage of New Zealanders on higher interest rates continues to see us tightening our belts and I believe this will translate into a lowering of the inflation rates.

New November date blooming for Flower Show by Janine Jackson

A

change in date sees the Raglan Horticultural Society’s Flower Show blooming on Saturday, November 4 at the Raglan Town Hall. Usually held in August, society president Geoff Pownall says they are looking forward to showcasing a wider selection of prize-winning flowers and vegetables. “We decided to change from a Spring Show to later in the year to give the community an opportunity to present different flowers and vegetables.” Summer will be in full blossom for the new date and the public will be treated to a diverse display of colours and fragrances this year. The show draws entrants from all ages, and flower categories include roses, sweet peas, poppies, geraniums, and pelargoniums. Vegetables will be represented by brassica, root vegetables and legumes.

Entrants will be judged on their gardening and creative abilities with sections for floral art and a children’s section. Floral art categories include miniature, beachcomber art, flowers and foliage, and native plant decorations. The youngsters will be competing for best sand saucer, aqua jar and miniature garden on a dinner plate. Set up for entrants is 9-10.30am, judging runs from 10.30-11.30am and the show opens to the public from 12.30pm with a koha entry. Check out the winners at the prizegiving at 2pm. The Flower Show restarted in 2014 after a break of 25 years and runs on alternate years with the very popular Garden Ramble. Geoff says the 2021 show was cancelled one week before opening due to a COVID lockdown. “The society is working hard to make this one a success.” Celebrating over 120 years, the Raglan Horticultural Society started in 1902 when a group of local farmers decide to hold a vegetable show. Details on how to enter can be found on the Raglan Horticultural Society’s Facebook page or at the Raglan Library, iHub, Raglan Community House, Whāingaora Environment Centre and the local schools.

The upcoming election will also play a big part on what direction the country takes with Governmental spending which will also have an impact on our inflation. So why are we still seeing fixed rates continue to trend up when the OCR isn't increasing? Because banks fund the money they borrow from various sources, including offshore; they are currently paying more for their wholesale funding lines because interest rates continue to increase on the back of ongoing financial unrest globally. This could still continue for some time. What does that mean if I have a fixed rate coming due, and what should I do? We currently have what is called an ‘Inverted Yield Curve’. Under normal circumstances, the yield curve is not inverted since debt with longer maturities typically carry higher interest rates than nearer-term ones. Basically, at the moment, the longer you fix for the cheaper it gets, where normally in NZ the longer you fix the more expensive it gets. This doesn't happen very often, in fact it has only occurred 6 times since 1978. Hopefully it means we are nearing the top of the interest rate cycle and often is an indicator that we are in or going into a recession. The outcome is generally that we will see interest rates start to fall; but when, is the million dollar question. Our view is that we still have some pain to come through 2024, however short to medium term fixing (12-18 months) is still a good option to benefit off any falls in interest rates in the later part of 2024. Everyone’s financial situation is unique, so it’s important to seek professional advice on your individual circumstances to ensure you choose the most suitable option for your needs.

Freedom2fly Celebrates Remarkable Success

Animal Health Column WITH ANEXA VETS

Getting ready for Summer Vacay!

C

hristmas often sneaks up on us much faster than anticipated and leaves us scrambling to get everything sorted in time. Often it is our pets that unintentionally get missed in the to-do list.

R

aglan's premier syllabus dance and acro studio, Freedom2fly, proudly announces its students' outstanding achievements in Ballet, Jazz, and Acro examinations this year. These results represent a significant milestone in their artistic journey. Notably, Raglan welcomed its first-ever ballet examiner and introduced Acro exams this year, expanding the local arts scene. The students' remarkable performance underscores the benefits of these assessments, including technical proficiency, self-discipline, confidence, goal achievement, and feedback for improvement. Principal Instructor Jessica Ramirez expressed immense pride in the students' dedication and hard

work, highlighting their determination to excel in their craft. Freedom2fly extends gratitude to its tutors and 'DanceStep' assistant tutors, acknowledging their crucial role in students' success. Special recognition goes to Martina Veracini, whose exceptional coaching contributed to top marks in the inaugural year of acro exams. Freedom2fly's commitment to nurturing talent and fostering a vibrant arts community in Raglan remains unwavering. For more information about Freedom2fly and their programmes, visit www.freedom2fly.co.nz or contact info@freedom2fly.co.nz.

Here is a list of things your fur baby may need in preparation for the summer vacation. • No Vaccination – No Vacancy! If you are putting your dog or cat into a boarding kennel, then their vaccinations need to be up to date. If your pet’s vaccinations are not current, they will not be allowed into the kennels or cattery, and this could seriously mess up your holiday plans. NOW is the time to check your pet’s vaccination records and book an appointment if your pet’s vaccinations are due before January. If your pet’s vaccinations have lapsed you may need to start the process again - one vaccination now and a booster in 4 weeks’ time; now is the best time to be booking in to ensure the booster is done in time. • Medication supplies. If your pet is on medication, it is a good idea to have a health check with the Vet and ensure that you have sufficient supplies for the holiday period. It is sometimes difficult to get a repeat script from the local clinic at your holiday destination, so it is preferable that this be done by your regular Vet who will be more familiar with your pet’s condition. Please keep in mind that we require at least 24 hours’ notice for all repeat scripts so we can order in the medication if needed, get our Vet to review the script, and dispense. • Pet food. Ensure you have enough food on hand for the time you are away, or the pet is in the care of others. A change of location or environment can be unsettling enough for a pet without a sudden change of food due to limited operation hours over the Christmas period and availability of stock if away from your usual clinic. Now is also the time to investigate a new diet if needed so you can transition your pet gradually to avoid any

Anexa, 40 Bow Str eet, Raglan

unwanted gastrointestinal upsets - nobody wants a sick pet with a tummy upset on holiday. Pop into see us for information, recommendations and to stock up on your favourite Vet recommended food and treats. Remember not all human food is healthy for pets and during the festive season pets are around a lot of food that can make them extremely unwell. Do not feed your pets anything high in fat or sugar, and place those chocolates in a safe area out of reach. • Grooming. Now is the time to book your dog’s summer groom to have a fresh smelling pup that isn’t going to overheat in the summer sun. • Flea and worm treatments. Come summer, the flea population explodes, and these little parasites can become a real issue. In high animal traffic zones like kennels, infestation can easily happen despite the best efforts of the kennel teams, so do your bit to help the kennel teams and make sure your pet is protected. Talk to our team to choose a product that best suits your pet’s needs and treat your pet as per instructions to break the flea cycle. • Microchip check. Ensure your pet’s microchip is working next time you’re visiting the clinic - you can book a nurse consultation to get this checked. Check the correct details for your pet are registered with NZCAR www.animalregister.co.nz . If you are already registered, we recommend logging on and checking your current contact details. • Provide instructions and emergency contact details. Whether a house sitter, kennel or your local clinic, it is important that clear instructions and emergency contact details are left if you’re away. This ensures realistic outcomes and budgets are taken into consideration if treatment is needed and you cannot be reached. Most importantly: snuggles, walks, head boops and time. Being proactive with the Summer Vacay to-do list will hopefully give you more time to enjoy your fur baby.

Raglan 21 Point Street Open Home

Light and space

Designed by well-known Waikato architectural firm, Architecture Bureau, this remarkable property reflects the original vision of its owners. The vision was twofold: firstly, to create a serene and inviting two-bedroom holiday retreat for themselves, with an additional two-bedroom guest area versatile enough to accommodate both extended family and short-term guests. Secondly, they aimed to craft a home that would seamlessly embrace the breathtaking views of Raglan Harbour, the Rangitahi peninsula, and the majestic Sleeping Lady, Whaingaroa, Raglans very own Mt. Karioi. As you step in to 21 Point Street, you'll immediately sense how the home's design ingeniously captures the beauty of its surroundings. Expansive windows frame sweeping vistas where it can be difficult to figure out if the line between inside and outside actually exists. Purposefully understated from the street, the top level represents the heart of the home with open plan kitchen, dining and lounge, 2 bedrooms with captivating views, both with ensuites and ready access to a choice of outdoor entertaining areas. The lower level, again consisting of 2 bedrooms with ensuites also has a purpose-built kitchenette.
