Dear Editor The Sunday Star Times this week reported on a survey called ‘Your Place 2019’. Run by Stuff in conjunction with AUT it asked a range of questions about the issues that mattered most to New Zealanders ahead of the October 12th local elections. The first question asked was, ‘Do you trust your local Councillors to act on the issues that matter to you?” a whooping 83.8% said No. What this shows up once again is a deep cynicism by most NZ’ers toward local politicians of which I am one. This of course helps explain why voter turnout has been around 35% at local body elections. Matt’s Monologue. “Standing on the shoulders of giants” is a very old saying which can mean taking the existing knowledge and contributing further, rather than trying to reinvent the wheel. In this town we have some gentlemen who have retired from an employed life of working on roads. They would know best practice for repairing potholes and too, would detest watching their rates be used for ticket clipping without improvement. Having had 9 years’ experience as a Community Board Member here in Raglan I am terribly frustrated about the ‘machinery of local government’ and I am equally frustrated about how difficult it is to change anything. Over these 9 years I have worked with many good people at WDC who want to deliver good outcomes. But in my view the machinery and the system needs a major repair if not overhaul. Alan Vink a veneer of hot mix (asphaltic concrete) over gravel and clay, and left hollows where the patches were done, which means water will eventually infiltrate and accelerate the inevitable failure of the repair. The existing knowledge would suggest a master plan of potholes is in the council office and Community Board members can add to the plan to be given to the repairers to have a work schedule. There would also be some baseline engineering standards of the repairs to give longevity, maintain road surface integrity, and that would be followed up by a random audit of standards being

Failure of council processes is a failure of political governance and oversight from the Mayor down. ewly certiﬁed skippers Brent Christophers, James Hawken and Lee Poolton are ready to take the helm for Coastguard Raglan’s search and rescue, and breakdown assistance. The three have nearly 30 years combined coastguard service and have put in thousands of sea hours and added to this is the Wednesday night trainings they do every week to get to this point. Adding three more certified skippers to Coastguard Raglan strengthens the already capable, talented and dedicated crew of local volunteers. The certification is for the Gallagher Rescue vessel only and allows them to operate within 12-nautical miles from Tirua Point in the south and to Port Waikato in the north. And, James points out, they can go outside this zone in extreme emergency situations if the need dictates. With skippers Gordon Jowsey retiring two-years ago and Viv Regnier taking leave, the three new skippers will provide additional support for long-time skipper Kevin Dreaver.

Although retired, Gordon has been available to provide cover for Kevin and Viv has also been on back-up, but having Brent, James and Lee fully certified reinforces their capabilities in the Gallagher vessel on the water. “It’s a lot for Kevin to be ‘Johnny on the spot’ all the time. It’s good to take some of the load off Kevin’s shoulders, not only for him but for his family,” Lee says. It’s been a big commitment for the three who work fulltime; Lee and Brent work in Raglan and James in Hamilton. “We’re all here for the same reason to make sure the unit operates to its full potential,” James says. The three are all keen fishos, surfers and boatmen, and they say belonging to coastguard means close bonds are formed with the people they head out to sea with, in often inclement weather and in extreme circumstances. “We live on a really dangerous coast and none of us want to see anyone perish out there,” James says. The Raglan Coastguard is in the process of installing a floating dry dock boat lift in conjunction with business

partner Marinescapes which will improve their response time and expense, as well as decreasing time spent on maintenance and cleaning. Coastguard Raglan grew out of Raglan Sea Rescue, which was a community rescue service formed by local fisherman, police and other commited locals. The Raglan unit is indebted to sponsors Gallagher Group. Raglan Volunteer Coastguard would not be able to perform as a highly-affective search and rescue unit without the Gallagher Group support. The wet crew undertake rigorous physical training to qualify to be operational culminating in an annual inwater survivability swim to shore after being dropped from Gallagher Rescue outside Raglan Bar. Twice a year Coastguard Raglan hold a public education Bar Safety Day in conjunction with Waikato Regional Council to educate mariners in the art of crossing bars. Spring has arrived

pring is here. And will be for all of the month of September at The Old School Art Centre. Step into the gallery room at the Old School and become immersed in an array of original art which celebrates the arrival of spring. Members of RaglanArt have combined to present this uplifting exhibition. A total of eighteen artists have their works on display. Although there are a number of different styles of work the exhibition has been curated in a very cohesive manner. Quite a number of the pieces are abstract works and they do manage to capture that joyful feeling of spring. The exhibition opened on the first day of spring, September 1st, and will run through until September 29th. The opening was very well attended and it is anticipated that this will be a popular exhibition. It will be open every day, including weekends, from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm. This is a quality exhibition with many of the artists being highly acclaimed and having sold works overseas and exhibited at various other galleries. The contributing artists are Bridget Tasker, Catherine Houston, Catherine O’Kelly, Lois

Brooks, Leontien Van der Beek,Ellie Gee, Toni Kingstone, Claudia Grutke, Ro Fawcett, Ross Thornton-Jones, Elsa Lye, Ailene Cuthbertson, Dyana Wells, Janet Scott, Jodi Collins, Annette May, Richard Gemmell and Marise Rarere. RaglanArt was formed to give these artists a website on which to be able to promote their works. Their first exhibition was just over two years ago at Rivet Gallery. A new idea being added is to hold a couple of “Artists at Work “ days. On these days a number of the artists will be working on some art and it will be possible to talk to them and get some understanding of their intentions and their creative process. The artists feel that having the opportunity to talk about their work will enhance the viewers appreciation of their work. These “at work” days will be on Saturday September 14th and Sunday 15th in the Theatre room from 12.00 midday until 2.00pm. The two photographers in the group, Richard Gemmell and Janet Scott, will project their images onto the theatre screen and will talk about what they are trying to portray. The photography session will be on September 15 from 1.30 pm to 2.00pm.

Joining Deb in the yard is Punk Pete and Martin who have been put to work utilising their carpentry skills. Having had a hand in building and renovating several homes, Deb is also handy on the tools. The expansion means the yard will be able to repair, process and upcycle the building material and furniture more efficiently and productively, Deb says. “There has been an increase in the amount of furniture and other material dropped off at Xtreme, and especially over the summer time. With the changed layout and increased

Raglan Club. “The owner has been very generous in offering us a space for our upcycled products and we are looking forward to showcasing Xtreme Zero Waste on the main street in time for the summer season.” There are future plans afoot for the yard, including upcycling workshops, a tool library, men’s shed, women’s shed, and elder and youth workshops. Deb’s also working with Timebank Raglan’s coordinator Sarah Lancaster to turn volunteer hours at XZW into credits for workshops. “I’ve had lots of people come into the yard and want to volunteer time so they can learn new skills.” An upcycling competition along the lines of Art to Wear and upcycled exhibitions at the Old School art Centre are also ideas for the yard that Deb has hopes of developing in the future. The team are after donations of power tools to the Wood Yard to use in the workshops and to loan out for a future tool library. More specifically, 1989 was also the year that Te Roopu Aroha ki te Reo - the then bilingual unit - was born at the kura. Whakamau, invites you on a journey to places of significance to those heralding from the Tainui Waka. From Whaingaroa to Kawhia, over the summits of Pirongia and Kakepuku, down to the rohe of Ngaati Maniapoto and over to Maungatautari. The waiata follows the words of Kiingi Tawhiao as he pays homage to Ngaruawahia, the resting place of Kiingi Pootatau, and also to Taupiri Maunga, where past kings sleep, with the spiritual journey returning back here to Whaingaroa with the words: “Tainui-a-Whiro Ngunguru te ao, ngunguru te po!” While in recent years, te reo language revitalisation has experienced mostly positive attention, public attitudes and government policies haven’t always reflected the importance of te reo in the education sector. Te Roopu Aroha ki te Reo was born out of the community’s desire to instill elements of te ao Maaori within their tamariki and it was Due to the strength and integrity of Kuia such as the late Tuaiwa Eva Rickard and E Kui Wini Bidois and the community that was behind them, that allowed te Roopu to really flourish in Whaingaroa. “The aroha in the name, Te Roopu Aroha ki te Reo speaks of the love that we

embody for te reo.” said Kylie Hollis, Lead Kaiako in Te Roopu Aroha ki te Reo Over the past few weeks, Kylie has been instrumental in organising the anniversary celebrations, including going back through the archives and putting together an exhibition of student work that has come from te Roopu over the past 30 years. The exhibition of work is currently on display at Raglan Area School. Kylie says the focus of Te Roopu Aroha ki Te Reo is empowerment that aakonga/learners are empowered to stand in their own rangatiratanga/autonomy finding strength in their own identity. Learning is founded in the tradition of oratory right from new entrants, students stand and speak in front of their class to build confidence in their speaking abilities. Looking through the exhibition, you can see a visual representation of the values instilled in the kura, including those of manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga, whakawhaanaungatanga and poutama. Also on display are various student works of harakeke. You can not speak of raranga harakeke at te Kura without mentioning the huge contribution that accomplished weaver Whaea Erangi has made there. Raranga harakeke not only involves textile design but tikanga Maaori. With visual and performing arts being a big part of their learning journey, te Roopu students experience a rich cultural learning journey. Former student and current kaiako for the Tawera class (years 3-5), Kahurangi Takiari (nee Whitiora) says it was this rich learning experience that drew her back to teach at te Roopu. Having come through the then bilingual unit, she left Raglan Area School when she was in Year 9 to attend Ngaa Taiaatea Wharekura, a full immersion kura in Kirikiriroa, where she was Head Girl in her final year. For Kahurangi, her learning experience at te Roopu was about being around whaanau and familiar faces. She also recalls some of their research projects around the Maaori Land Wars where they went on trips to visit some of the sites of significance – an experience that not a lot of mainstream students have access to. “I remember Whaea Lisa and Matua Jay, E Kui and Grace Mataira they were my teachers when I was a student here. Coming back I appreciate home a lot more and it’s opened my eyes to what we have as a community here.” said Kahurangi. Raglan artist shows an entire school around her tiny studio

Miranda amid the clutter of her tiny home studio, working on the latest 'Heavenly' series of tropical flowers.

hale Bay painter Miranda Caird’s teensy home studio is so full-to-overﬂowing with artist’s clutter it’s hard to imagine she could show a whole classroom around let alone an entire school. But that’s exactly what she’s done this term – albeit remotely – and the 52 children who attend Lake Brunner School down south have been “absolutely enamoured” with their virtual visits to Raglan, principal Shirley Serban told the Chronicle. They’ve now produced their own vibrant landscapes inspired by both the beauty of the West Coast region they live in and by Miranda, their “famous” artist role model. The children made two video calls – via the school’s TV screen – to Miranda after Shirley contacted her through Facebook, asking if she’d like to be involved in their study of local landscapes. Miranda was “very keen”, she says, to show them around her studio and answer all their questions about life as an artist. The children were then encouraged by their teachers to look outside at their own spectacular mountain and lake environment before they set to work producing their own art. The three Year 1 to 8 classrooms have now completed portfolios of work similar in style to the mountain landscapes for which Miranda is best known. “But each (picture) is also completely unique,” Shirley adds. The colourful paintings and pastel-anddye works are proudly displayed on the school’s Facebook page.

Miranda’s delighted with the quality of the work. “They’ve really made the most of what they’ve got (on their doorstep),” she says, looking at a video showing the country school’s picturesque location in the village of Moana – on the northern shore of Lake Brunner – with mountains in the distance. Although she hasn’t visited the school, Miranda’s familiar with such South Island alpine scenery. For some years now she’s taken a road trip south to photograph the landscape – or take up the odd artist residency – and on returning to Raglan has re-captured these South Island vistas on canvas. Her trademark acrylics are sold both in New Zealand and overseas. A one-time teacher herself, Miranda insists mentoring others should be part of the whole experience of being a full-time artist. She recalls that back in 2003, when deciding to go full-time as a painter, it was a surprise to find the arts sector “not very supportive”. But while she had to largely find her own way around the pitfalls, she believes a more supportive environment is now emerging which makes working as an artist a much easier and more viable career option. She says one of her visions is to see a well-connected nationwide art scene or trail that allows both Kiwis and tourists to easily access New Zealand art. The absolute ideal, she adds, would be for visitors to include artwork on their ‘must have’ lists along with that quintessential bottle of New Zealand wine and jar of manuka honey. Edith Symes

haingaroa Alternative Economy (WAE) members of the ﬁrst savings pool movement Raglan will be proudly celebrating 10 years of group lending this September. Member Phil McCabe helped start the movement locally with an article into the Chronicle about the millions of dollars in interest leaching out of Raglan to overseas banks. A community centred and socially interactive method of exchange was sought. Heads got together, discussion ensued and The Living Economies Educational Trust (www.le.org.nz) offered guidance and help in the search for alternatives to corporate banking. Subsequently a savings pool based on the moral precept of reciprocity or utu was formed in which members saved to and borrowed, interest free from the pool. The first utilisation of funds were for smaller amounts but as the “pool” funds grew so did the availability of borrowing for larger needs. News of the success of the first savings pool spread amongst family and friends and sparked the establishment of a second savings pool. By 2014 they too were effectively lending within their group. The groups are proud of successful lending

among members for items and projects as varied as paying off credit card debt to house mortgages and helping in the establishment in Raglan of small enterprises leading to self-employment. More and more people aware that their interests are poorly served by lending institutions are returning to traditional money pooling practices in which making your money available interest free to others allows you to access interest free money in return. Word of mouth has spread and interest is growing to the point that the formation of a 3rd group in Raglan is now highly probable. The Raglan Bowling Club is hosting a Fun Day this weekend and everyone is welcome. Starting at 1pm this Sunday, September 15, it will be a relaxed introduction to the sport for those who haven’t tried bowling or a chance to refresh for those who have. Just turn up at the James Street complex in your mufti gear, wear a pair of flat soled shoes and be prepared to give it your best shot. Members of the club will give you a few tips on the game and will answer any questions you have.

There will be a chance to socialize after rolling a few bowls up to get to know how the club works and meet some of the members. The Raglan Bowling Club has around 30 active players who participate regularly. They take part in weekly roll-ups on Wednesdays and most Saturdays. Roll-ups are informal club get-togethers which usually start at 1pm and run for a couple of hours. The club has annual championship events and some members travel to tournaments for extra competition. “Bowls can be as relaxed or as competitive as you want to make it,” said the Fun Day organiser Alan Price. “I started playing last season and I love the game. It’s a great game and we have plenty of good times. “The club is really lucky to have a great coach in Terry Green who has helped improve the skill level of us newcomers. “His coaching has certainly gone a long way to helping us get the maximum enjoyment out of the sport. “Bowls is actually more challenging than it might appear to the casual observer, but it’s a buzz when you get it right.” One man who gets it right more often than not is club stalwart Ross Turner. Ross is about to launch into his 41st season at the Raglan Bowling Club and his name appears season after season on the club’s championship honours board. Ross still loves the game he first tried all those years ago. “It’s a game I would encourage anyone to give a go,” he said. “It’s made me a lot of friends and I’ve got to know many people over the years from visiting different clubs for tournaments.” For more information on Sunday’s Fun Day phone Alan Price (021 456 751). group of us from the Raglan Netball Club formed a team to enter the Kurangaituku 2019 tournament held in Rotorua. It is a well known tournament that has been celebrated for over 80 years. As we were all first timers to the tournament we didn’t know what to expect and it was overwhelming for us all. Many teams from near and far attend each year. We had a mishap

with our grade and were put into the wrong one but we still played with our hearts on our sleeve. Through wins and losses, overall we had an awesome weekend. We felt proud to have represented not only our netball club but our town as well. Memories were definitely made and we can’t wait to go back and represent next year. Netball Prizegiving this Sunday, September 15, 11.30am at the Raglan Town Hall. Please bring a plate of food to share.

End of Season chat with the Karioi Tuis

ell, what a great end to the season for the Karioi Tuis. The ﬁnal

game against the Maeroa Year 8 Tigers was a real nail biter.

We were neck and neck for the first two quarters and were losing by one goal at the end of the third quarter. The girls were determined and focused in the fourth quarter and in the last few minutes of the game we got ahead by one goal to win just 12-11. This meant we had won our pool in our grade and the girls received a trophy at the prizegiving that same day. We also received the trophy for overall best uniform which was a nice surprise for us and the

Raglan Netball Club as the uniforms were new this year. A huge thank you to our coach Sarah King who worked hard to develop and bring the girls skills together in this team. Thank you also to all our committed parents who made sure their daughters were at trainings and supported the team at the Saturday games. Another big thank you to our umpire, Kopu NgaherePompey who not only umpired each Saturday game but showed a real interest in our developing team. And, of course thankyou to the Raglan Netball Club Komiti and members because without the club there would be no netball in Raglan. Please join us at the Raglan Town Hall on Sunday 15th September at 11.30am for the Raglan Netball Clubs’ prizegiving followed by a shared lunch. Adele Van Weerden (Tuis’ manager) Here are some thoughts from the Tuis: For my first season playing netball, it has been a steep learning curve getting to know my positions and all the rules. But our team was really supportive and welcoming and once we settled in as a team we quickly improved. Netball has now become one of my favourite sports and winning our grade was the icing on the cake. It was thrilling to have such a tough final game against Maeroa and come away with the win! By Georgie Benseman I felt really happy and proud for the team when we got called up to get the champion trophy at prizegiving. And then we got a surprise and got

two trophies! It was for the best uniform which was really cool. By Katie Buckton After the last shot went in for our team, I felt exhausted but so excited because we won! Everyone was cheering and Mum was jumping up and down. I was so relieved we had won because it was a very close game! By Eliza Buckton Dear Tuis, I am so glad I could be in your team this winter. Your inspiration and confidence held us through the year. It was an honour for me to captain my team this season, I learnt a lot from my team mates and will forever remember them.
