OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS

Everyone Welcome

K ia or a When our team of staff and volunteers began planning for Daffodil Day many months ago, we looked forward to celebrating the thirty-year anniversary of this iconic day of hope with N ew Z ealanders. T he 2 0 2 0 Daffodil Day street collection will likely be remembered for different reasons. Although cancelled in Auckland, planning for street collections under alert level 2 continued in our region, but with precautions in place. C ontactless donations encouraged; physical distancing req uired; friendly smiles freq uently hidden behind face masks. Daffodil Day may have looked different this year,

Sunday 10am - 12 noon

but the hard work of our Raglan area coordinator K risty Darbyshire and her team of dedicated volunteers was no less si nificant the support of the community no less vital. T o everyone who worked tirelessly to ensure a safe and successful Daffodil Day, we thank you. And to the Raglan community who gave generously to our collectors, we are so grateful. Y our support ensures that despite these uncertain times we can continue to be there for people impacted by cancer. Church bellringer pulls the rope once again – from her doorstep

A lso at H.G W ebb House, C nr Boundary & V ictoria S treets, Hamilton

Parishioners had arranged the small neighbourhood gathering this week specially to honour Betty, their chief bellringer and a “ stalwart of the church” , who is not in good health. T he octogenarian has lived in Raglan since arriving from Delhi, India, as a 13 year old with her parents and four siblings. T he family settled in Point St, where she remained for 51 ye ars. Betty has had a lon affiliation with t eter s. t s where she was oth confirmed and married, and also where she had her own five children all orn at the local maternity hospital – i n turn baptised.

Betty gets to ring the old church bell from her home, courtesy of Peter Williams who tractored it round from his workshop.

B

etty S utton can’ t get to church anymore to ring the bell for S unday serv ices at S t Peter’ s, so

the bronz e bell that’ s usually cradled high up on its Bow S t wall this week came to her – by tractor. And while the recently refurbished bell may’ve looked a little different, it had a familiar ring to it. Betty knows its exact sound because she’s pulled the rope that rings the bell for the past 30- odd years, and she got to do it

again last Monday simply by stepping out the door of her John St home. After several hard pulls on the rope – the bell dangling from the front forks of a tractor which fellow parishioner Peter Williams had driven around from his Raglan Engineering workshop – Betty declared her lengthy labour of love “ done” . T he 10year-old bell will be reinstalled in its steel carrier just as soon as earthq uake- strengthening work at the Anglican C hurch is complete.

s well as ecomin the town s first postie – cycling the often hilly, gravel roads – she’s worked at the bakers, the pub and the hospital over the years. “ I knew everybody back then,” Betty reckons. “ Y ou didn’t have to say who you were.” And she remembers how the church bell’s rope used to be on the outside of the building. But the temptation to pull that rope and set the bell pealing was too much for N ew Y ear’s Eve revellers, she laughs, so it got shifted inside the church. Betty also recalls how she rang the bell one Saturday, showing it off to visitors, but everyone in town thought it was a tsunami warning so she never did that again. E di t h Sy

Renovation breathes new life into Trade Aid store T rade A id may hav e looked like it wasn’ t in business anymore but a recent renov ation and new shop- fitout has giv en the store a new lease of life.

T he C ovid disruptions have seen the shop shut during lockdown and another extended closure due to the recent Auckland restrictions. Like many businesses, T rade Aid stores across the country have struggled due to the pandemic and a closure of an Auckland store meant a ift of updated shop fittin s for the Whaingaroa store. T rade Aid Whaingaroa manager Eloise Rowe says even though the store renovations and fit out have come with a tin e of sadness she’s pleased for the Raglan store which was looking a bit tired. “ I feel really sad for our sister store not to have survived the lockdown but it’s an awesome opportunity to breathe some new life into our store.” It wasn’t to be all smooth sailing for the makeover with the grand opening, which was scheduled for August, postponed until Auckland came out of Alert Level 3. “ U nfortunately, we were unable to pick up the new store fi tures and fittin s from Auckland to complete the new look, so the grand opening as advertised had to be rescheduled,” Eloise says.

Trade id pop up shop was quic ly set up to provide the community with access to some T rade Aid essentials, while Eloise waited for Auckland restrictions to be lifted. N ow that Aucklandis at Alert Level 2 .5 , the green light has been given to collect the updated fittin s and complete the renovations. T he shop will open for business on Wednesday, September 9 and the grand opening will be on Saturday, September 1 2 . Eloise is looking forward to welcoming new and old customers into the new loo store. “ I can’t wait to open the doors to our refreshed and renovated shop, and to get feedback from our customers.” As a celebration of the makeover, Eloise is giving away a T rade Aid chocolate bar with every $ 2 0 purchase and a mask with every $ 5 0 purchase during the Saturday grand opening. “ O ne of our shop volunteers Elaine made the masks and donated them to T rade Aid. We are pleased to be able to give away something that has become an essential part of our lives.” T rade Aid Whaingaroa has been delivering the fair trade message and products to Raglan for more than 30 years. T he last time the store had a makeover was around 1 3 years ago. Trade A id on Bow S t is open 7 days from 9 . 3 0 am- 4 . 3 0 pm. Janine Jackson

More masks available locally at Made Raglan

Lin Van Craenenbroeck, of Moz-Art, shows us her creations on show at Made Gallery.

T

his week the C hronicle caught up with L in V an C raenenbroeck,

one of four founders of M ade G allery on Bow S t, about her mask range and how you can order your mask.

When and why did you dec ided to start sewing the mask s? When we were in lockdown I wanted to provide my family with masks. Dirk my hus and is a volunteer firefi hter so there was the chance that he would get pulled out

of our ` bubble` , and coming back into it. So me, Dirk and youngest son Brenden wanted to wear some protection when going into town doing groceries. I posted pics on my FB page, friends like it and asked if I could make some for them and off it went.... Where in the c ommunity have the mask s been utilised? Margaret Dillon who is part of the program, Feed the K ids, saw the masks too, really liked them and asked if I could make a dozen for their team, to wear for the distribution of the food parcels. So I did and then I came up with the idea to make them and sell them to the community during lockdown as a fundraiser for the Feed the K ids progam and donate the money to the Raglan Area school. Where c an you purc hase them from? Y ou can contact me on my business FB pa e o art and order them y sendin me a message and you can buy them in our creative local space Made G allery, the new building next to the Supervalue. I am making daily new ones to have a constant stock available, as they go very fast! Y ou are the founder of the M ade G allery, H ow is the gallery progressing

and what new developments have there been? Y es I am one of the four founders of the Made G allery. We are all very happy with our new creative space as it is our happy place where we can create and show people what Raglan has got to offer in talent. We opened 9 months ago and reactions have been overwhelming, people absolutely love our space and the local talent that we display. Raglan is full of very talented artists who create hi h quality art pieces includin our local young people. O ne of our goals was to get the talented youn ones in and ma e them confident enough to show their talent...and we succeeded, which makes us really happy. T hese young artists are the future for Raglan being an arty town. Ataera Manu avies s stunnin oari pen drawin s are very popular. And Sam Mclachlan` s drawings of rappers and C harlotte Solomon` s mandalas get a lot of oooh' s and aahhhh' s too. In 2 0 0 6 when I immigrated from Belgium to this town , my dream was to own a little creative shop here and 1 4 years later my dream became reality and I' m loving it!
