Ruapuke bread gets name change but keeps same recipe for success R

uapuke Artisan Bread is transforming into Raglan Artisan Bread with former Orca owner Corrina Wells taking over the beloved bakery and Jenny Carter still at the oven. The partnership is just the push Jenny needed to take the locally made sour dough bread to the next level. “I had reached my absolute maximum of what I could do at Ruapuke and there was so much pressure to do more but in a positive way,” Jenny says. Without the kitchen and human capacity to expand the business, Jenny was limited to what she could achieve on her own. And then she fell and broke her wrist, which required surgery to insert two steel plates. Every good bread shop needs a baker who can knead the dough, so Jenny put Ruapuke breadmaking into hiatus while she recovered. It gave her time to think about what next, she knew she needed the ‘perfect person’ to take over the business. After selling Orca 18 months ago and taking time out to spend with her children, as well as committing to kura reo (language classes) two-days a week at Poihākena Marae and working at WOK part time, Corrina was looking for a new challenge. “I wanted another business I could grow and develop. I like working hours that suit my lifestyle and I like the challenge and all that behind the scenes stuff,” Corrina says. A chance conversation between Corrina and new Orca owner Lisa Pemberton who suggested she have a ‘business’ chat with Jenny set the wheels in motion. “When Corrina approached me, I said I would love to give the business to you,” Jenny says. Jenny knew she had found the ‘perfect person’ in Corrina. The pair have lots of plans for the new bakery which will be located opposite WOK in Electric Avenue on Wainui Rd and the iconic tiny bread shop next to Trade Aid on Bow St will still sell the freshly baked breads and other baked goodies. It’ll also mean the bread will be even fresher than before baked in the purposebuilt commercial kitchen designed specifically to Corrina and Jenny’s baking requirements. The kitchen will also be available to hire for workshops and other small food enterprises. And they are quick to point out that customers need not be concerned, Jenny’s popular sour dough products will still be

They will be expanding the product range to include fresh seasonal salads, preserves and chutneys, and other baked goodies using locally-sourced and inseason produce as much as possible. “Our aim is to provide nutritious, delicious, seasonal, affordable and sustainable products. I like the idea of growing as the business requires,” Corrina says.

n my 8th consecutive journey to the UK to see my 99 year old Mum I included a trip to Anglesey, North Wales. I visited my old training college friend, Jennie who I had not seen for 30 years. She picked me up at Langfair railway station! I was impressed with the rugged coast line and the stories of the sea rescues.

The highlight of my visit was to Morlie life boat station. how ever due to the preparations for a fund raising event the next day, it was closed to sight seers. Disappointed I jokingly said I had come all the way from New Zealand. Next minute I was given the VIP treatment, the area was cleared of cleaning

The menu will be fluid and adapt to what they can get their hands on at any given time. “We want to deliver wholesome additive-free foods as the easy option regardless of dietary requirements. The bread is our bread and butter, that’s what we will focus on and the rest will just grow from there,” Corrina says. A column connecting with senior citizens in our community. paraphernalia, and I was led down the viewing platform to the stern of a bright orange life boat where the young welsh crew member proudly showed me the name of the boat, RNLI 'Kiwi'. The young man explained how a New Zealand Merchant Seaman, Reginald James Clark was torpedoed in the English Channel in 1941,

and rescued by the Royal National Lifeboat Institute. He showed his gratitude by leaving 2.7 million in his will to the RNLI which was used to replace the ageing Morlie lifeboat and duly named RNLI 'Kiwi'. Having been brought up in the fishing port of Hull on the East Coat I was familiar with fish trawling tragedies.

Inkspillers Raglan Writers Collective F or about a year, around eight or more local writers and illustrators, whose published books include fiction, non-fiction, memoir and poetry, have been meeting to support and encourage each other’s writing processes.

Like all artists, we’re opinionated. We’re also still figuring out what we do and what we could run in Raglan in the future. So far, we have a book stall at the Old School Creative Market, which is a great way to show Raglan who we are and what we do. We are hoping to run workshops in the future for those keen to start their own writing journey, or who want to complete a writing project. We will also have a presence at Hamilton Book Month, where local writers present their books and talk about their writing processes. Inkspillers is an old reference to the days of ink, of course, and the quill, where in the urgency to complete a decorated manuscript it would be covered in spillage and blots, and maybe tears of frustration and futility. Writing anything is a lot like that: an emotional seesaw in the confines of your computer or notebook; riddled with the perpetual swing between self-assured genius and paralyzing self-doubt. Why the hell would anyone write a book? I ask myself this often while I sit on one poetry novella completed, and several manuscripts in various stages of sorting and completion, or fall over and abandonment, depending on the weather or my mood. When you have your published book in your hand, it is very exciting. All that hard work of

writing and editing is done, your manuscript copy edited (hopefully free of mistakes), and printed and launched. It is only the beginning though … of a long process to get your work out in the world. What next? It’s tempting to ask: Why did I ever start? Why are writing ghosts haunting me? Writers are strange obsessive creatives, often working and living inside imaginary worlds they create that no-one else has access to until their book is published. Usually by then, the writer is well over it and onto the next one, or two or three, and a holiday in a tropical paradise looks like heaven. If you are published by someone other than yourself, all the business of writing and publishing is mostly handled by your publisher, or your agent if you have the good fortune to have an agent. You are still expected to provide info for the media, and to self-promote, particularly these days through social media, where possible. That’s a big ask for some of us. When you self-publish, all the business end of writing is in your hands. All the promo, social media engagement, marketing and distribution is yours to manage. It’s a good and a bad thing, both exciting and exhausting. However, the rewards of such perseverance can be financial if you’re onto it (although, in truth, very few writers make even the minimum wage) and the satisfaction of being in control of your own creative business is invaluable. The primary business of Inkspillers, then, is to provide a forum in Raglan for published writers to share information about

publishing, whether it’s to submit to outside publishers, or to selfpublish, and to support writers with a finished working manuscript through the processes and pitfalls. The second priority for us is to look at shared marketing, publicity and promotional possibilities for the books we have already written and are currently working on. As such, we are not a creative writing group (we don’t usually share our work in progress, although a finished manuscript might do the rounds, for copy edit and feedback). Similarly, we are not a book club, although we do share our

Te Uku school wins TREEmendous garden makeover

ne of five schools selected to win a $10,000 grant, Te Uku School has transformed a neglected area of its grounds into an all-new outdoor learning zone. A video application created by students Ezra Ruka, Matthew Roughton, Riley Evans and Iyla Scott to TREEmendous, a joint initiative between Project Crimson and the Mazda Foundation proved to be the winning formula for the school. “Mrs Clarkson told us about the competition and asked us for volunteers to apply so we decided to do a video application. A month later that we found out we were in the top 11 and then we made the top five schools to get the garden makeover,” Ezra says. The school plans to use the area to teach students how to identify native plants, birds, lizards and insects and educate them on

disease, weed and pest control and other issues surrounding the conservation of fauna and flora in New Zealand. Teachers, students, the wider community as well as Mazda Foundation Trustees and the Project Crimson team participated in a weekend working bee recently that saw more than 800 native trees planted. Te Uku School principal Pip Mears says the school is committed to helping its students learn beyond the walls of the classroom. “We see our outdoor learning space as an extension of the classroom where we can provide a rich environment for children to learn everything from science and technology to drama and music. “Developing our grounds will allow us to provide a range of learning opportunities and help students to make connections to the world outside the classroom,” she says. Students who dug in for the garden makeover enjoyed getting dirty for their beloved school.

Te Uku Pony Club

e Uku Pony Club was originally established in the early 1950s. It went into recess for a few years and was restarted in the early 1980s by Avril Hawken and Christine Hartstone. Te Uku has amazing facilities at the ground on Okete Rd. David and Nicola Peacocke sponsored a fabulous three-bay shed for the club rooms which has made a huge difference to rally and competition days. There is a cross country course available for schooling on rally days and training as well. Members range in age from four years to 21 years. All levels are catered for from beginners to advanced A certificate level. There is an adult riding group affiliated to the pony club. Rally days are separate to the children and membership

to Te Uku Pony Club entitles use of the girls and equipment. The new season opening rally is at the club rooms on September 1, 2019, at 10am on 424 Okete Rd. This rally will be unmounted followed by a shared lunch. New members are very welcome. Like every organisation pony club needs money to survive. A fundraising evening has been organised on August 24 with Dave Uphold. Dave is an entertainer, comedian, hypnotist and auctioneer. Tickets are $50 including a meal. “It was fun because we were doing it for the school,” six-year-old Hannah Prince says. “My friends and I got rid of this really huge vine. It was so thick and we were standing on top of it. be able to return the favour to her students,” he says. Ruud spoke with both teachers and students about the important role bugs play in maintaining our ecosystem and says it was great to see the Raglan community turn up and lend a hand to help the school transform its outdoor area. “From the number of people who showed up on the day it was clear that this is a community who care about their environment. It’s important that we pass this passion on to the next generation and educate them about the importance of taking care of our ecosystem, and hopefully this new outdoor learning area will do just that,” he says. he final Raglan Outdoor Winter Bowls Tournament sponsored by Raglan 4 Square was played (despite the weather) on Saturday, August 10. A special thank you to Satnam and Andy from Raglan Four Square for their continued support. A field of 16 teams turned out for the tournament with 6 local teams plus visiting teams from Pio Pio, Huntly, Pirongia, Te Awamutu, Hamilton Cosi Club, Taupiri and Frankton Junction. Despite the dire forecast play commenced in sunny conditions at 9.30 am, two games were played before the lunch break after which the weather broke leaving the remaining two games having to be decided by what is known as cutting the cards. Apart from the weather preventing the playing of the last two games a great day was had by all with an outcome being achieved. The winning team for the day was that of Judy Bishop, Marie Moir

and Margaret Jamieson from Frankton Junction Bowling Club. Runner up was a composite team of Alastair McLchlan along with two local players Tim Ryan and Colin Bouzaid. Third overall was the team of Alan Coates, Gary Robinson and Gordon Murray from the Huntly Bowling club. The club is now planning for the summer season with opening day scheduled for Saturday, September 14. Once again we will have two greens in operation for the summer season with the grass green coming along nicely after autumn renovation. The grass green along with the all weather turf allows the club to host 28 teams for their summer tournaments. If you would like to give bowls a go, or just want to try the fun and camaraderie of being part of our thriving club, roll ups are held every Wednesday and Saturday at 1pm. This week we feature the achievements of the Raglan Junior Rugby teams at the Hopu Hopu Tournament held over the weekend.

Raglan Junior Rugby T his season we have some executive committee members who are moving on from Raglan Junior Rugby with their youngest kids who are starting to get ready for high school. We’d like to say a special thank you to the following:

Thank you to Janine Hartgill who has been a part of the Raglan Junior Rugby Club for the past 10 years. Within this time, she has been a team manager and club secretary. The club appreciates all the time and effort Janine puts into her role, going above and beyond. The club would like to thank you for the time you put in to making the club run smoothly.

Taking Janine’s place next year as club secretary we will be welcoming Emma Snowden. Emma has been involved with the club for the past 4 years, including managing, coaching and being a parent to her 3 young boys who range from 6th to 10th grade. Emma has a few more years to be involved with the growth of the club and is looking forward to working with a great team. Thank you to Dee Wilson who has been with Raglan Junior Rugby Club for the past nine years and our club treasurer for the past few years. Dee has dedicated a huge amount of time into Raglan Junior Rugby. The club has been very fortunate to have Dee helping and sorting the financial side

for the Gwynne Shield. The Gwynne Shield is a representative tournament for rugby players up to 57 kg. There are five Hamilton teams and five country teams.

The teams are school based, which means you must trial for the team allocated to the area your school is in. After the trial a team of 22-24 children are selected. Then training starts in Hamilton and is usually twice a week. June is full of pre-season games(held on Sunday) as coaches

going! This year Mitchell Swann, Isaac Limbert, Alby Sharples and Harper Peart played for the Panthers. Tyson Stafford and Crosbie Wallis played for the Tigers. Jay Wilson played for the Wasps. The 1st week of July school holiday is rugby! The 10 teams play each other over six days, at the end of each day teams get points for a win or draw, with a bonus point for four tries or a score within seven of the opposition.

It is held on Sundays and run by Morrinsville. Players also travelled to Hamilton and Matamata. The junior rugby clubs in the Waikato region are pooled together making eight competition teams. The Southern Reds is made up of players from Raglan, Frankton and Melville clubs, who are in 11th and 12th grade, and weigh under 45kg’s. Coaching is rotated between the clubs and this year is Raglan’s turn to coach. Jardon Wilson and Paki-Dean, together with manager Sioux Swann, have been preparing
