attoo artist Daisy Watson is set to leave a permanent mark on Raglan as Purlieu’s second artist-in-residence.

A month-long summer residency programme, Purlieu is the brainchild of local artist Tom Hinton and is a hybrid between

contemporary and experimental tattooing. Tom and Daisy say gone are the days when only sailors were adorned with indelible ink with the artform gaining popularity and acceptance around the world. “People are collecting artworks on their bodies now and it’s another medium for artists to display their work.” Daisy says. “It’s definitely been in the process of change and nowadays it’s uncommon not to have a tattoo,” Tom says. Known as @daisydoestattoos on Instagram, Daisy designs dreamy tattoos inspired by modern art that are one-off original pieces she can adapt to fit the ‘wearer’. Her surrealistic pieces pay homage to iconic artists like Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, and Jean Arp. Born in Australia and living in Berlin on a freelance artist’s visa, Daisy left art school after sixmonths and has worked mainly as a tattoo artist but has since ventured into design, jewellery-making, screenprinting, painting and hand drawing on fabric. Following in the footsteps of Purlieu’s first artist-in-residence Carson Foley, Daisy is tattooing at

the Raglan Tattoo Studio, staying in a bell tent at the Te Kopua Whānau Camp and her stay culminates in an exhibition at the Old School Arts Centre. “It’s amazing here – I’m gobsmacked by the place,” she says. Daisy has come to New Zealand without any preconceived creative ideas for her exhibition and she will take inspiration from Whaingaroa. “It’s good to have a real clean slate and be inspired.” Providing tattooists with a positive environment to retreat, tattoo and create in Raglan is exactly what Tom is hoping to do with the Purlieu residency. Daisy Watson’s exhibition opens Saturday, March 2 until Saturday, March 16, Monday to Friday, 10am-2pm at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre. Opening night is Saturday, March 2 at 6pm and all are welcome. To book a tattoo with Daisy at daisydoestattoos@gmail.com or call into the Raglan Tattoo Studio at 2 Wainui Rd. Janine Jackson

Wendy’s whirring whiteware testament to busy retirement

L

ongtime local Wendy Coxhead still gets calls “all the time” from people on the lookout for a bargain at the Lions op shop downtown in Wallis Street. That, despite having given up her volunteer management role of the thriving secondhand business last year. Admittedly she’d done a decade or so at the helm – so it’s no surprise Wendy can’t quite extricate herself from the ongoing commitment. “My family felt I lived and breathed Lions,” the now 77 year old told the Chronicle goodnaturedly while hubby Laurie reinforced that, yes, she’d been in a bit of a bubble. The Tidd Drive couple met as teenagers which makes for more than 60 years together, says Wendy, and half of that time in Raglan. It’s a different town now, the pair agree. Wendy worked as practice manager of the West Coast Health Clinic long ago, when it was based in the historic house in Wi Neera St. But she’s always been involved as a volunteer in the local Lions Club which has now served the community for 45 years. She and the late Kaye Ardern were both awarded Melvin Jones Fellowships by Lions Club International back in 2013, recognising their commitment in the operation and management of the op shop and in the running of the Lions Club locally.

“It is very rewarding to help fulfill community needs,” Wendy said back then. And she stands by those words today. “Volunteering makes you feel good, it is part of your reason for living.” Nowadays Wendy’s more conscious of needing to be around for Laurie who is going blind but she still “works in the background” helping sort, wash and iron from home the mountains of secondhand gear donated to the shop for sale. “I also use my dishwasher (at home) for the crockery and cutlery,” she says. “Everything looks so much nicer when in the shop.” As a stalwart too of the Raglan Community Arts Council, which runs the Old School Arts Centre in Stewart St, Wendy regularly washes all the centre’s tea-towels and dishcloths to help keep its certified kitchen spick and span. Waikato District Council uses a reading gadget to maintain standards of hygiene, she adds, which means everything gets boiled in water with disinfectant. “I’ve never had a bad reading yet, after about 14 years or more,” she is proud to say. A life member of the arts council, Wendy has no plans to give up her background work any time soon and is looking forward now to the completion of the Old School’s new, improved shed from which to operate both her Lions and arts council chores. It’s only a stone’s throw from home, where Laurie is set up

with a direct line to the ambulance station should the need arise. Wendy believes – as she heard on Radio New Zealand just last week – that people like her are better equipped for old

age through volunteer work, remaining able and more alert for longer. Then of course there’s the feelgood factor, says Wendy, proud of the fact that every cent made

out of the volunteer-run op shop – our local Lions “one reigning fundraiser” – goes straight back into the community. Edith Symes

Exhibition: This is Us

T

his is Us’ is a current exhibition in which most of the members of ‘Raglan Art’ have a piece on display. This is a group that was formed just over two years ago when they launched their website. From just three initial members, it has now grown to a vibrant, enthusiastic group who hold regular get-togethers at various venues.

Different art forms are practiced by the group, which has the simple common thread of being interested in art matters. The current exhibition in the gallery room at The Old School presents everyone with an opportunity to see the creativity of this group. Many of the group are accomplished artists who have sold works to overseas buyers and been involved in many exhibitions over the years. Within the group are artists with Masters degrees, art teachers and winners of prestigious awards. The

exhibition is open daily until February 27. The featured artists are: Ro Fawcett, Kim Jenkins, Anita Seddon, Dominique Marriott, Ailene Cuthbertson, Marise Rarere, Leontien van der Beek, Elsa Lye, Toni Kingstone, Richard Gemmell, Ross Thornton-Jones, Lois Brooks, Catherine Houston, Catherine O’Kelly, Janet Scott, and Nici Peacocke. This work is ‘Family Connections’ by Lois Brooks.

A column connecting with senior citizens in our community. This column is sponsored by Raglan Rest Home and Hospital. Manukau Road, Raglan.

Newsletter February: Keeping Safe in the Summertime so I thought. However, at our first meeting for the Disability Support group in February my missing sandals turned up. I now have two pair of identical sandals. Guess someone is making sure I don’t have to wear jandals for driving!

I

t’s good to see people enjoying eating outside cafés in Raglan. However, it is important that pedestrians have safe and adequate access along the pavements. Please consider mums with pushchairs, the wheelchair population, and the elderly and disabled (particularly the visually impaired). Bare Feet or Jandals? This summer has been exceptionally hot and its bare feet indoors and jandals outside. But what about driving? Many years ago, my friend drove through a farmer’s fence when her jandal slipped off her foot and jammed on the

accelerator pedal. She was prosecuted for dangerous driving. I have avoided wearing jandals for driving ever since. Meanwhile, it is not illegal to wear jandals whilst driving. However, the AA recommend bare feet rather than jandals, and preferably sensible shoes. When my old sandals broke, I was fortunate to find a nearly new pair of Hush Puppy sandals at the op Shop for $5. A week later they went missing when I took them off to do a Nia Dance demonstration at the Golden Hearts Gathering way back in December. I found them a few days later at the Extreme Waste and happily paid a dollar to get my own shoes back. Or

Recycling The Raglan Opportunity Shops are grateful for all the donated clean clothes and resalable items. However, they need to be dropped off during the shop opening hours of 10 am to 3 pm. Johny Cole is organising for pick-up of obsolete electronic equipment to be taken to Hamilton for recycling. Unfortunately, old large TVs are excluded. Ring Johny on 8257376 for details. Nia Dance Belinda is running Nia Dance Classes at the Raglan Town Hall every Wednesday morning. Exercise to music at your own pace, have fun and socialize. All are welcome and the first session is free, with concessions available for seniors. The dance routines help to develop strength and balance for any age group, and reduces the risk of falling in the twilight years. Pauline Abrahams
