Sue and Paul deliver Chelsea and the big red cash register to Auckland next week.

S

tore mannequin Chelsea’s off to a new career in theatre and the big red NCR cash register that sits proudly on the counter is going to a secondhand clothing boutique next week after Sue and Paul Marrow shut up for good their Raglan Vintage & Retro shop at the wharf. The couple have run their stylish secondhand store for seven years now, first in Bow St and then in brand new premises at the rebuilt wharf where they had more space to indulge their penchant for fabrics, furnishings and formica tables from the 50s, 60s and 70s. “You’ve got to sell a lot of cups and saucers to make a living,” Paul explains of their shift to larger premises. When the Chronicle called by on Monday their wharf shop had that artfully cluttered look, with all manner of collectables and memorabilia from yesteryear still on show. Which presents no problem as, while the shop’s closing, Sue and Paul are staying in the line of work they love. “We’re not going out of business,” Paul makes clear. Rather the couple – coming up 49 years married – are simply shedding

the commitment of the shop in favour of marketing and selling their wares via Facebook, the annual Waikato Mid-Winter Retro Fair and an occasional market. They still have a lot of merchandise stored back in the garage of their Puka Place home. “We’ve always had to have things in reserve to fill the shop up again after busy weekends,” Paul explains. While these two self-described “blowins” from Auckland say they will miss the people they’ve met and friendships they’ve made in Raglan through the business, their time now will be their own. Sue in particular is looking forward to getting shot of the surplus tables and chairs cluttering up their house, and that extra set of bar stools in the hallway. “And I will be very selective with what I buy (from now on),” she insists. The pair have worked as a team – marrying Sue’s passion for fabric and designs with Paul’s wood-crafting skills – to upcycle and restore retro furniture, getting it expertly reupholstered first in Raglan by the late Jim Boggiss, but latterly in Hamilton by Nenes Upholstery. They’ve made buying easy for customers by being happy to travel far and wide making deliveries. It’s a lifestyle

Inglewood Office

thing, they say, being able to check out items up and down the country or pick up purchases for restoration along the way. They’ve been doing a bit of that just this past fortnight. with three formica tables sold and delivered and another table – one Sue could be keen to restore and keep for herself – picked up from Hamilton. It’ll be more of a nostalgic than a business trip to Auckland next Wednesday though, to drop off “our beautiful red cash register” along with Chelsea the mannequin – a 70s icon who’s been with them from the start and even has her own Facebook page. Says Sue fondly: “She’s been a good worker, selling clothes.” Paul reckons he’s given Chelsea Pollock-Milne, to use her full name from her Hamilton clothing store beginnings, an excellent reference as she takes up residence at the long-running Dolphin Theatre in Onehunga. There is still a counter and cabinets to be sold or dropped off at McElwain’s Auctions, says Sue, and time will tell what happens with the much-photographed TARDIS changing room built by Paul a few years back. “We’ve had people interested,” says Sue, but it can easily be dismantled and stored for a century or two.

Soundsplash 2020: Good vibes and good traffic

W

ith another Soundsplash over for the year, it was clear that there were changes afoot at this year's festival. Organisers had a clear win this year on both the traffic and waste fronts with traffic delays kept to minimal wait times and waste produced from festival-goers being much less than previous years. There was also a clear focus on duty of care at the festival which saw almost 8000 people attend.

4 RAGLAN Chronicle

Organisers said that the rangatahi in attendance had been very well behaved and, “A pleasure to deal with,”. The introduction of the new 'Wellbeing Zones' at this year's festival also meant that rangatahi felt their needs were well cared for and that was evident through the positive vibe at the festival. The presence of the in-house Soundsplash Kaitiaki and Wellbeing team roaming the venue, as well as having Consent Club, Deep Space, the medical team and Police on-site meant there was plenty of assistance on hand for those that needed it.

The addition of a competition to reuse your tent at next year's Soundsplash in return for a free camping pass, along with the presence of The Tent Collectors (an organisation that collects and donates reusable tents, mats, sleeping bags and tarpaulins to refugees in Greece) also resulted in a lot less tents left behind at this year's festival compared to those run in previous years. Parent of festival attendees, Hamish McArthur said: “This is the third Soundsplash that my children and their friends have been to.

“The reality is that this is often their first time living completely unsupervised. The fact that you provide a safe and supportive environment for young people to enjoy music, spend time with people their age, while enjoying this new freedom is amazing. “The commitment to their well-being is something you should all be incredibly proud of.” Raglan Chronicle Images thanks to Desmond Nielsen and Logan West

Cogswell Creative Collective collaborate for art’s sake T ake a left turn just before the divvy and you find yourself on Cogswell Rd, a meandering country lane that turns into gravel halfway along.

Look for The Creative Workshop sign at the end of a driveway; it’s here you will find Raglan’s newest art collaboration of Karron Campbell, Anja Petford-Nesch, Heather Cunningham and Coleen Parkes in an old piggery lovingly transformed into a buzzing art studio and workshop. Dubbed the Cogswell Creative Collective, the four artists are getting ready for their first official exhibition during the Easter Weekend Raglan Arts Weekend. They will also be joined by Karron’s daughter Rickie Hill, who designs jewellery and other artworks, when she arrives from Whangarei. The collaboration has been brewing for some time; Karron and Rickie have long been art allies and had their first exhibition together at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre in 2010. But the stars aligned at the end of last year after Anja finished her degree in Māori visual arts at Te Wānanga o Aoteroa, and Heather and Coleen completed a painting and drawing class run by Karron. They have all been on different art journeys over the years; Karron, Ricky and Anja can’t remember a time when they weren’t dabbling in the arts, Heather got creative with clay in her 20s and Coleen took up painting and drawing around 12 years ago. Both Heather and Coleen say Karron’s art class last year was the turning point for them and they were instilled with the confidence to take their art to new levels. “When we did Karron’s drawing and painting class we were able to learn the techniques to get the ideas out of our heads and onto paper,” Coleen says. Not wanting the art journey to end, Karron suggested they join forces, along with Anja and Rickie, and get busy creating for the Raglan Arts Weekend as a first major art goal. They all say that regardless of their experience and skill set, the opportunity to work collaboratively is a great way to keep the creative juices flowing. “Working with other creative people has an impact on your own creativity. You can

ARt collective story and pic - from left Karron, Coleen, Heather and Anja bounce ideas of each other and learn new techniques,” Heather says. “It gives you the confidence in what you are doing creatively,” Coleen adds. Karron, Anja and Heather are all experienced art tutors and look forward to designing art workshops for budding artists. They are all dab hands at clay and Heather runs the adult clay classes at the Old School.

Both Karron and Anja tutor in clay, drawing, painting, printmaking, mosaics and more. The Creative Workshop is at the back of the property Karron and her husband Philip bought in 2008 and the piggery was transformed into a working art studio by Karron and Rickie a year later. As well as providing the artists with space to exhibit their creations, the workshop is

also the ideal location for the four artists to share their skills in tailor-made classes. With a kiln, other pottery equipment, easels, bench space and plenty of arty accoutrements, the Creative Workshop has all the necessary gear to cater to a variety of artistic ventures. Clay sculpture from Belgium represents 600,000 deaths

Andy Fels pictured with the sculpture.

R

aglan couple Andy Fels and Ngaranoa Renata returned from European travels last year

carrying a small clay sculpture with huge significance attached to it.

The piece depicts a bent human form and is one of 600,000 made across the world for a 2018 art installation ComingWorldRememberMe in Ypres, Belgium. Representing the 600,000 victims who lost their lives due to WWI in Belgium alone, the sculpture was presented to the Raglan Returned Services Association at Armistice Day commemorations in November last year. Gifted to the couple by Andy’s Belgian aunt during a four-day trip to trace his Belgian ancestral roots, they decided that due to the sculpture’s significance it should be part of the RSA’s memorabilia. “We felt the RSA should be the kaitiaki of the sculpture,” Andy says. The New Zealand soldiers saw action in Belgium during three major battles in 1917. They were Messines, Broodseinde and Passchendaele and were some of New Zealand's bloodiest days in history, with a combined casualty figure of over 8000. On 12 October 1917, in a battle at Passchendaele, New Zealand suffered its highest one-day death toll when 843 men were killed in just a few hours.

Andy’s grandfather fought in Belgium during WWI and met the woman he was to marry and bring back to New Zealand with him on the ship returning with the soldiers. Her village was obliterated during the war and they met at a café where she worked. Andy’s Aunt Rozanne, a well-regarded WWI researcher and Mother Superior at a convent in Ypres, was given the sculpture due to her tireless and thorough research efforts. Raglan RSA secretary/treasurer Noleen McCathie says the piece is very meaningful and will become a significant part of their collection. The RSA is working with the Raglan Museum to arrange, preserve and catalogue the collection of war memorabilia on display at the Raglan Club. Known as the Great War Close to 20 million military personnel and civilians died during WWI which ran from 1914-1918. Of the 20 million, 16,697 New Zealanders were killed and 41,317 Kiwis were wounded during the war.
