The Nihinihi Wesleyan Mission Station well unearthed during Rangitahi developments on Opotoru Rd (supplied by W Gumley Archaeologists. Image below: Nihinihi Wesleyan Mission Station buildings illustrated in an 1856 plan that roughly aligns with the modern landscape.

angitahi Project road developments have revealed a well belonging to the Nihinihi Wesleyan Mission Station on the corner of Opotoru Rd and Wainui Rd. Archaeologist Warren Gumley – who is contracted to Rangitahi to oversee the work around the historically significant site - says the well was most likely constructed around the time the mission house was built. He says the well is around six-metres deep and was probably another one-metre deeper, and around 1.5-metres wide and was fed by ground water. There was also evidence of pipes feeding into the well, which he says may have provided water for baches in the 1950s. The well will be left in place but it was back-filled for safety reasons. An 1854 Royal Navy survey plan of Whaingaroa Harbour shows the church as more-or-less on Opotoru Rd and the mission house around Wainui Road - close to the intersection with Opotoru Rd. The mission was established on the site in 1839 under the Reverend James Wallis

who arrived with his wife and three young children. The family started life at Nihinihi under their four poster bed, which was covered with timber and blankets, until the mission house was built. Buildings at the station included a large chapel and mission house plus outhouses, additional small houses or whare, gardens, orchards and paddocks for animals. When the Wallis family moved to Onehunga in 1863 Reverend Cort Schnackenberg and family took over the mission until 1880. The station was no longer occupied by the mission after 1880 and the property was leased out and farmed.

The mission house burnt down in 1889 and the property was purchased by Edward Schnackenberg in 1899 for farming. He subdivided the 76-acre property in 1940 into small residential parcels. An archaeological assessment was undertaken in 2016 by Gumley for Rangitahi Project to mitigate the impact of the development on archaeological remains found on the site, and to identify and record any archaeological deposits. The assessment also found evidence of pre-European occupation of the site with numerous shell midden on Opotoru Rd. Janine Jackson

ongtime Wallis Street resident Kathy Ashby lives so close to the sea that she literally steps off her front deck at high tide for a daily dip. She’s even fished from that deck – like her mother Maudie before her. “The snapper would go straight in the smoker for tea,” Kathy once told the Wintec team who produced the ‘Baches

Junior Doctors’ Strike The union representing junior doctors has indicated its members will be going on strike from

8am on Tuesday 29 January to 8am on Thursday 31 January

This strike will affect our ability to carry out our services at Waikato Hospital and some services may be affected at some of the rural hospitals. To reduce the number of patients in hospital over the period leading up to and during the proposed industrial action we will be: • Rescheduling some appointments for surgery, treatments and outpatient appointments • Giving priority to emergency, intensive care and maternity. All patients whose operations or clinical appointments are affected by the strike will be notified by telephone. Not all clinics are being deferred, so if you have not been notified please attend for your appointment. If you are unsure about your appointment call 0800 276 216.

of Raglan’ book in which her property featured a decade ago. “There aren’t too many places in the world where you can fish off your own deck,” she said in an interview with coeditor Venetia Sherson. But it’s the end of an era for Kathy after she recently sold the distinctive white stucco house that juts out into the harbour, with a view to the nearby wharf one way and towards the harbour mouth the other. Kathy’s now busy packing up more than 20 years of accumulated possessions, ready for a move to Hamilton next week which will take her closer to friends, family and other interests. Yes the septuagenarian will miss the “panoramic view” and her swims each day. But in fact it’s the sea itself she reckons she’ll miss most. Her mother wrote to her in 1992 – when Kathy was living on Norfolk Island – to say she’d bought a house at Raglan after years of family holidays in a caravan at Kopua campground. The property became a weekend retreat for get-togethers, Kathy recalls, until Maudie moved into it full-time. By then she was well into her 80s. Then Kathy returned to take care of her aging mother who lived to the grand old age of 100, albeit at Raglan Rest Home near the end.

“My best memories are of our family gettogethers (here),” Kathy told the Chronicle nostalgically. But along the way she’d renovated the art deco style home – taking it from four bedrooms to two with an en suite – and for the past five years she’s been kept busy by offering casual bed and breakfast accommodation. With its proximity to the water it’s been a popular B and B, and the baches book that features her home has always graced the coffee table in the small guest lounge looking out to sea. Kathy says she’s spent a lot of money over the years on what is now a milliondollar property, including the building of a new concrete sea wall out front. The art deco fireplace remains a feature, its original tile surrounds intact and unchipped. Kathy’s enjoyed not only fishing – being careful to miss the agapanthus when throwing a line off the deck – but also kayaking out beyond her front doorstep. \However she’s a busy woman – often commuting or at Ngahinepouri golf course – and has managed to see the orcas only occasionally on their regular visits up harbour. “I saw them that second-to-last time (this month) with the two babies,” she says. “They were lovely.” Edith Symes

Plum holiday job leaves 12 year old on real high

Zak at work.

H

e’s only 12 but Zak Hooper has a plum

tree – and access to a neighbour’s as well. “We drown in plums in January … we’re knee-deep in the damn things,” laughs Zak’s mum, Jenn. She says that last summer they got 10,000 plums off just the one tree, from which they “hang like heavy grapes”. Zak’s role in the family operation is first to help pick the plums – and to rake up those on the ground so they don’t get squashed.

Once Jenn has graded the fruit he puts twisties onto the 1kg bagfuls, which are priced at $4, and sits on the verge outside selling the plums to passers-by. And with Facebook orders also flowing in, he doesn’t have to sit on the grass very long at all before he’s in clover. Zak’s big dream this summer was to take a flight over Raglan with the Piako Gliding Club, so with proceeds from the plums

topping $600 this season he got an upgrade from an $80 to a $120 flight, with the glider released from its tow plane at a height of 1500 rather than 1000 metres. Jenn says he was “pretty stoked, pretty happy” to be soaring over Raglan as free as a bird. And there’s still lots of cash left over, so Jenn says that will be the kids’ spending money not only while holidaying here but for the whole year too.

The plum job might be money for jam but there’s an altruistic element too to things: Zak rushes out each week to give a few bags to the rubbish/recycling guys, and Jenn sometimes takes her plum jam up to the local rest home. Jenn says the family’s grateful for all the community support “and we love that the people come by and chat”. Edith Symes

embers who have been playing for less that five years have a separate category to compete in for the championship pairs and singles events. On Saturday, January 19, four of our junior men took up the challenge in the Pairs section. As there were only the two teams, they played the ‘best of three games’ system. The two games called for some special shots

to be played to achieve a victory, some shots worked but others didn’t. Sometime luck is just not on your side. Darryl Hawkins and Alan Price defeated John Carr and Gordon Mills in two straight games to become our five Years and Under Pairs Champions for this season. Congratulations. Unfortunately, there were not enough ladies in the Five Years and Under sector to hold a competition. We need some more members to achieve this.

3:15pm: St John’s College to Raglan via Hamilton Transport Centre The higher bus is unable to use the full length of Bow Street due to low trees, and also unable to use Norrie Ave due to the steep gradient of the road, so there are some route changes planned for these services. It will also start and end its journey outside the fire station on Wainui Road The timetable will also have minor changes. Please contact us via busit@waikatoregion.govt.nz or 0800 205 305 if you would like to discuss these changes.

The double decker has 87 seats, compared to the 49 seats on the current bus. See more information here. Buses are fully air-conditioned, have increased luggage space on board, and have free WIFI and USB charging points. They also have CCTV. Each bus has an exterior bike rack, with room for two bikes at a time. There's no charge for using the bike rack, but loading and unloading the bike is the responsibility of the passenger. The double decker bus will run on the following services during school terms: 7am: Raglan to St John’s College via Hamilton Transport Centre 3.15pm: St John’s College to Raglan via Hamilton Transport Centre Please contact us via busit@ waikatoregion.govt.nz or 0800 205 305 if you would like to discuss these changes. There are route and timetable changes for these services. The higher bus is unable to use the full length of Bow Street due to low trees, and

also unable to use Norrie Ave due to the steep gradient of the road. The double decker will start and end its journey outside the fire station on Wainui Road. Passengers at the Raglan West, Norrie Ave, and the harbour end of Bow and Wallis streets will need to use an alternative stop on the route, or take the Raglan Assist bus and change at Te Uku. The double decker bus will use James Street to connect back on to Wallis Street – bus stops will be installed here but may not be in place by the end of January. Please hail and ride the bus here if required. All other trips during school terms will be served as normal with the single decker bus. In school holidays the single decker bus will be used, but will have a modified route for the 7am service to Hamilton and 3.40pm service to Raglan. The bus will start in Raglan West (corner of Te Hutewai and Wainui Roads), but will travel via Wainui Road (fire station) and James Street, not Norrie Ave. Please note this bus will also start 5 minutes earlier in the morning, leaving at 6.55am. WHATAWHATA ASSIST BUS ROUTE CHANGES From Tuesday 29 January the start and end point of the Whatawhata Assist route will be in Store Road, Whatawhata. The Glentui Lane stop will still be used by the Raglan and Raglan Assist buses – please signal the driver.

Raglan DEADLINE PRIVATE TREATY

pggwre.co.nz

Soundplash 2019

S

oundplash is a music festival that dates back to 2001 when it was originally started by locals Brian and Naomi of Cornerstone Roots fame. The very first event was held at the Town Hall, back then called the Soundsplash Eco Reggae Festival, and always had a conscious element to its management whether it was through music, films, workshops and stalls with an aim to reflect and influence, and to stimulate change in societies. After the success of its first event, the festival was moved to Wainui Reserve, due to the natural amphitheater that existed there, and until 2008 (when it went on hiatus until 2015) brought some big international names to Raglan like veteran reggae acts Third World and Junior Kelly. Fast forward to 2019, this year’s festival was a sellout event, with close to 8000 people through the gates. Headlined by international acts Sticky Fingers, Famous Dex and Macky Gee, this year the amphitheater was buzzing with a massive crowd of excited festival goers, some of them experiencing their first ever music festival. Go behind the scenes and you will see the sheer amount of work that goes on to produce an event of this scale in a town like Raglan. From the organisers to the volunteers to the clean-up crew that put in tireless hours, the majority

of these people are members of the Raglan community that come together so that everybody has a good experience in Raglan. This year, Brian and Naomi were joined by promoters Pato Entertainment and Audiology Touring who have come on board to be part of the Soundplash family. The promoters have been involved with the success of other festivals like One Love and Bay Dreams as well as the recent Toto tour and identified Soundsplash as having a special perspective due to the event’s focus on minimizing waste and the efforts they put in to ensure that the festival does what it can to create the least amount of waste possible. Some of the local stories coming out of the event included those of residents and volunteers helping out visitors in need as well as the overall good vibe around the festival venue. As with most big events and festivals, long queues and wait times are the norm, as is some unruly behavior exhibited by a small minority. With the crowds now gone and the venue cleared, festival goers are already expressing interest in attending Soundplash 2020. Soundplash would like to thank the Whaingaroa community, artists, attendees, vendors, volunteers and crew for helping to put on another successful festival. Without everyone’s cooperation an event like this could not happen so thank you.

Although WEC (aka the Whaingaroa Environment Centre) has been going for over 20 years, many of you may not have ever been to visit.....or even know where to find us. Come say hello this year! The Whāingaroa Environment Centre is an information, resource and action hub, supporting environmental education and sustainability. Pop into our centre in the Raglan Town Hall on Tuesday – Fridays (12pm – 4pm) or Saturday mornings (10am – 12pm) to pick up seeds from Seed Bank, loan tools from the Tool Library, volunteer with us, find out more about our projects or just have a chat about environmental issues. Energy is building here and we’re looking forward to connecting with you! Let’s create an environmentally sustainable, healthy and resilient Whaingaroa together. WEC delivers a range of projects, each with lots of events and opportunities to be involved. Our projects include: * Marine Matters: which aims to provide activities to connect with our coastal environment and marine ecosystem. This year we’ll be working to keep you updated on the review of the Maui Dolphin Threat Management Plan, we’re talking to our boaties about how to id and report Maui dolphins, running Maui Dolphin Day and will be coordinating regular beach cleans throughout the year. Backyard Bounty: is the encouragement and celebration of the food grown in our community. We want to see locally grown food everywhere! This project has lots of branches including: - Seed Bank: WEC sells seeds in affordable quantities, varieties which grow well in Raglan and can be saved. Long term the seedbank aims to hold and share locally saved seeds – please contact us if you’d like to become part of the Seedbank. - Tool Library: this year we’re updating the tool library with more shiny tools to borrow. Come down to borrow tools for your garden project. - Growing Gardeners: our amazing educator will be working with students at local schools again this year: growing people who can grow food! - Crop Swap Raglan: connect with this community group to share the abundance of homegrown or homemade goods once a fortnight. - Community Gardens: on Wi Neera street are flourishing! Join us to grow food together, learn from one another and connect with other awesome locals. * Timebank Raglan: provides a way to share skills, get things done and help our community, without needing any money. Timebanks value all people equally – an hour is worth an hour, regardless of the age, gender or educational background of the person. Get involved! * Plastic Free July and Plastic Free Raglan: WEC is a partner in the PFR project and works with this team to coordinate events and promote ways to go plastic-free (especially) in July*

Reminders:

- The next Crop Swap will be held on Sunday 3rd Feb at the Raglan Bowling Club from 9.30am - Whaingaroa Community Gardens next working bee will be on Tuesday 30th Jan from 9.30am - Maui Dolphin Day is on the 23rd of March. Take the time now to get up to Xtreme to gather materials to make your raft for the Recycled Raft Race - Let’s show our lovely summer visitors how proud we are of our environment. We can lead by example: let’s all try to remember our reuseables, reduce single use plastic in our lives and pick up rubbish that we come across so it doesn’t end up in the ocean.

Local foodies merge in chocolate milk union

R

aglan Chocolate and Dreamview Creamery are joining forces to bring delectable chocolate milk produced in Whaingaroa to the market. Locals will get the opportunity to sample the chocolate goodness at the Raglan Creative Market this Sunday, January 26 at the Raglan Chocolate stall. Raglan Chocolate owners Mike Renfree and Simone Downey had recently started buying the Dreamview milk from Four Square and decided to make a chocolate milk using master chocolatier Mike’s handcrafted chocolate. “The Dreamview milk is so creamy I decided I must have a go at making chocolate milk. To put something together like this is so exciting and so much fun,” he says. Jess Hill – the instigator for Dreamview Creamery’s raw and pasteurised milk – says they also had plans to produce other dairy food products including chocolate milk. “We’ve always wanted to do it but didn’t know how,” she says. So, when Simone messaged Dreamview on Facebook about the

chocolate milk Mike was trialling they jumped at the opportunity. After his first attempt, which he says wasn’t quite right, Mike has spent the last couple of weeks playing with different blends. Mike has created two chocolate milk flavours using dark and caramelised chocolates, and combined with the creamy goodness of Dreamview’s milk, the Raglan Chronicle can attest to sampling a flavour bomb of deliciousness. The two businesses are inviting locals to taste test the chocolate milk at the market and, although the product is only in testing phase, they hope the customer feedback will help them gauge the product’s market viability. Both businesses put down their success so far to the supportive Whaingaroa community combined with quality products, good ideas and keeping it local. “I don’t think you could do what we are doing in other towns as well as we have here,” Jess says. Raglan Chocolate is now sold locally at WOK, Raglan Roast Café and Raglan Roast Te Rapa, La La Land and the Herbal Dispensary, and more recently at Mostly Vegan in Hamilton. Mike, a food technologist in Hamilton, creates the boutique

craft chocolate from a certified production room underneath the house and he is always coming up with new chocolate flavours. Their cacao beans are organic and ethically sourced direct from grower to maker. Dreamview started selling their raw milk over a year ago and have

since started producing pasteurised milk, which they sell at Raglan Four Square as well as supplying Indi’s, The Shack, Wallis Bistro, Raglan Area Schools Super Kai café, Dizzy Blocks and Holy Crepes. Jess says although the milk is more expensive, the feedback they have had from café owners is they

are saving money in recycling and the reusable glass bottles are the perfect fit for Raglan’s plastic free philosophy. Taste test the chocolate milk at the Raglan Creative Market this Sunday, January 27 from 10am2pm at the Old School Arts Centre. Janine Jackson

Sign up for a predator free Whaingaroa

Roles for volunteers include helping to set traps as well as data and technical, media, photography, videography, drone videography, art, education, communication, birdmonitoring, scientific and conservation and health and safety. roles

D

on’t be put off by your level of fitness or skill set, Karioi Maunga ki te Moana is looking for volunteers to fill a myriad of roles to create a predatorfree Whaingaroa. The A Rocha Aotearoa project aims to restore biodiversity with more than 45 km of trapping lines and over 1500 traps in order to restore the Oi (grey faced petrel) population that breed on Karioi each year as well as little blue

penguin, kaka, bellbird, tomtits, kereru, morepork, tui, and fantails. Volunteer coordinator Bexie Towle says the community-led project has plenty of volunteer opportunities for people who aren't so keen on bush whacking and trap checking. “We’ve got roles that cater for all levels of fitness and abilities.” From at home data entry to promoting the project at events such as Maui Dolphin Day, Bexie says new volunteers are always welcome.

“Anyone who volunteers is immediately part of our Karioi family. Some of our volunteers have been with us for the entire 10 years the project has been running.” There are also data and technical, media, photography, videography, drone videography, art, education, communication, bird-monitoring, scientific and conservation and health and safety roles. “We’re open to ideas on how to promote the project. I’m always posting my amateur phone videos on our Facebook page. It would be good to have someone who knows what they are doing,” Bexie laughs. As well as extensive traplines on Karioi, there are a number of trap hot spots along the coastline from Riria Kereopa Memorial Dr

to Manu Bay and Indicators that are less challenging and easily accessed by road which need checking and resetting. Bexie says the Karioi Maunga ki te Moana backyard trapping programme is a also great way to connect with neighbours and get on top off rats and other pests in your local neighbourhood. A Whale Bay backyard hub has set up an extensive network of local backyard traps and for some it meant meeting neighbours for the first time in the 15 years they had lived there. “It’s as much about community as it is about conservation. Our volunteers have caught over 7000 predators and at least 800 more have been trapped through the Backyard Hub. That's a lot less rats,

stoats and possums in Raglan,” Bexie says. Maintaining the traplines is key to the project but Karioi Maunga ki te Moana project manager Kristel van Houte says the goal is also to increase the trapline coverage and the volunteers and landowners play a huge role in expanding the project. “Because of extra funding we hope to finance expansion by 100 hectares per year and we are working together with Te Iwi Tahi pest control to do this.” For more information contact bexie.towle@arocha.org.nz, visit www.karioimaunga.co.nz and click on the get involved link or check out the Facebook page @ karioimaunga.
