The Raglan Community Board with support from Raglan Naturally are excited to announce that we have been successful in securing funding under Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s Innovating Streets Programme. The programme provides funding for our community to create new spaces to connect and interact. This is an exciting opportunity to activate some of the community’s aspirations that have long existed – creating people focused spaces downtown. Which is why we are launching Places for People - He Whenua He Tangata. During the recent lockdown we saw how our community reconnected, slowed down and enjoyed the safety of being out on our streets; walking, biking, and letting the kids freely run and play.

This is something we should be able to enjoy all the time, not just in exceptional circumstances. The people in our community make Raglan what it is, and this is our chance to create innovative and interesting spaces for people to linger and enjoy. You’re invited to come along to the Raglan Town Hall Supper Room on the 1st & 2nd of August to share your ideas and feedback into what ‘Places for People’ means to you, and what you envisage these places could look like. We will have further information about the Places for People project to share, including potential focus areas and information about the process and opportunities. As this is a community driven project and we want these spaces to reflect our collective aspirations for our town. The first iteration of the project is scheduled to be in place for summer for our community to directly experience. The project is experimental in nature, so we are aiming to utilise modular forms that will allow the layout of the street and town spaces to be adjusted. Therefore, while the project is in place, we will be asking for your feedback so if necessary the design can be modified and improved further, or the spaces simply reverted back to their current state. More workshop details will be announced soon via the Raglan Community Board and Raglan Naturally Facebook pages. See you at our first drop in session on the 1st and 2nd of August. Simon Te Wheoro sculpture is the feature artwork at the recently opened Ministry of Justice new entity the Criminal Cases Review Commissions office, or Te Kāhui Tātari Ture, in Hamilton.

Simon says it was a great honour to have his piece chosen to represent such a significant crown entity.

Unveiled by the Chief Commissioner Colin Carruthers QC with Minister of Justice and Courts Andrew Little in attendance.

An abstract form of a traditional weaponry club and is a symbol for eternal strength, leadership and Rangatiratanga stature, the artwork symbolises the empowerment of miscarriage of justice victims.

The new independent body will investigate miscarriages of justice and is expecting 40 to 50 cases in the coming months. The Raglan artist’s sculpture titled Kotiate and is sculpted out of Takaka marble sourced from a demolished section of the old parliament building.

“I feel privileged to have my work recognised in this way and to be a representation of righting the wrongs in the justice system.”

“The piece pays homage to my Māori ancestry and it speaks of conflict between Māori and pakeha, and acknowledges the struggles that have occurred.” The piece was carved at a Taranaki sculpture symposium attended by Simon last year.

“Kotiate came to life in the lands of Ngāti Ruanui, Te Ātiawa beneath the sacred shadows of Taranaki maunga and it is pinned on a Taranaki andesite base,” he says. Headed by Colin Carruthers QC, the commission will be independent from the Ministry of Justice, which has until now investigated wrongful convictions. Cases found to be miscarriages of justice will be referred by the commission back to the courts to determine guilt or innocence. Little told Stuff the commission will act as a "safety valve" against wrongful convictions. Janine Jackson

Artisan bakery rises to Covid crisis challenge S

ourdough loaves are flying off the shelves downtown at Raglan Artisan Bread – and now they’re being snapped up too across the divvy, at Bin Inn Dinsdale. The breakthrough into Hamilton comes after baker Corrina Wells mounted a post-Covid sales push to “grow the market” and futureproof the business. The qualified chef – looking diminutive behind towering shelves of freshly baked sourdough in the shop at the far end of a retail lane off Wainui Rd – told the Chronicle this week the specialist bakery was going “really well”. It’s just on a year now since Corrina, part of the family which formerly owned Orca Eatery & Bar, took over and centralised Jenny Carter’s successful home-based startup business. Back then Jenny was selling 50 loaves of her authentic homemade sourdough over three days, commuting from Ruapuke to her tiny bread outlet beside Trade Aid on Bow St. Now it’s a six-daysa-week business in which – even though it’s still mid-winter – 100 to

mixing, kneading, baking, selling. And the customer is privy to it all. “It’s unusual (here in New Zealand ) to have an open bakery like this,” she points out, agreeing the open-plan look is more reminiscent of French or other continental bakeries. Corinna admits now the coronavirus crisis was a bit scary for her new venture. “But I knew I had a good product,” she says, “so I kept things alive by baking at home and hammering it on social media.” She also took a risk by first investing in a large chiller to “rest” the sourdough loaves overnight – putting in a side door to access the outside chiller – and then buying a new Ferneto spiral dough mixer that’s fondly referred to as Fern. “Fern hugely increased our capacity and functionality,” Corrina laughs, adding the extra chiller space helped too. The whole breadmaking process is a 36-hour ferment, she explains, this particular dough requiring long resting periods to cultivate its naturally occurring wild yeasts and bacteria. Corrina is proud of her artisan bread business. “That’s what makes sourdough so nutritionally beneficial compared to (commercial) yeast breads.”

Corinna admits now the coronavirus crisis was a bit scary for her new venture. “But I knew I had a good product,” she says, “so I kept things alive by baking at home and hammering it on social media.” 150 loaves per day are being baked on site in Electric Ave. The bakery’s cornerstone product is mostly sold over the counter, along with cinnamon scrolls, almond-orange slice and other counter treats that locals have developed a taste for, Corrina says. There are also “really popular” sourdough toasties, sourdough pizzas, frozen pizza dough and garlic breadcrumbs to be had. All of which means Corrina now finds herself heading up a sevenstrong team of workers. “At least three of us work in the shop at any one time,” she says –

While Corrina is excited to get a toe-hold in the Hamilton market – and hasn’t finished yet – she’s grateful for support from local businesses which have stood by her from the outset. Raglan Four Square takes about 20 sourdough loaves a day, which it stocks both at its checkouts and in its cabinets just inside the supermarket entrance. And her old stomping ground, Orca, takes 60 to 120 loaves per week. The range of bread now available has gone from classic white to include other varieties such as seedy sourdough and olive & rosemary.

Some of the team at Raglan Artisan Bread. From left: Sarah Gambrill, Darius Paul, Corrina and Kalina Morgan. There’s also a fruity sourdough whose distinctive flavour comes courtesy of the beer malt from Raglan’s own Workshop Brewing boys in Park Drive.

And keeping it seasonal, the product range now also includes soups and salads to accompany the trademark artisan sourdough, which Corrina says is proudly made

“from scratch” without anything artificial added. Edith Symes

Pounding the pavement for Starship kids

SUPPORT LOCAL An occasional post-covid column featuring the faces behind local businesses in our community.

Lisa Laity (pictured with son Ryder) is running the Taupo Marathon next month to raise money for the Starship Foundation.

L

isa Laity is pounding the pavement in the name of charity as she takes on the Taupo Marathon next week raising money for the Starship Foundation. “I’ve always wanted to run a marathon and despite doing a lot of half marathon events over the years, I’ve never plucked up the courage to go for the full 42 kilometres. It sort of feels like now or never and running for Starship has certainly pushed me along,” she says. While Lisa and husband Jono have been fortunate neither of their two children have needed the services of Starship, they have friends and know of many others whose children have spent time there. “Choosing to support Starship was a no brainer for me. The quality of care, services and facilities Starship provides for the 135,000 Kiwi kids that visit each year is world class and as parents we take real comfort in knowing such a place exists should our children need it,” she says. Lisa says the support from friends and family and the wider Raglan community has been incredible with

more than $5000 already raised via her Everydayhero fundraising page ahead of the event on August 2nd.

This column is made possible thanks to sponsorship from Raglan Four Square

The Starship Foundation relies heavily on donations from across the country. This year they have some ambitious projects including the purchase of life-saving breathing support equipment for premature newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. They also need to raise more than $1.5 million to keep their National Air Ambulance flying and their most ambitious project yet, to raise at least $10 million for a much-needed expansion to New Zealand's only Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. Less than two weeks out from the event Lisa is tapering off and focusing on plenty of stretch and mobility work from her Seed Pilates studio. “I’m nervously excited. Taupo was my home for 28 years and there is nothing more beautiful than running along the shores of the lake with the snow-capped mountains in the background, it’s pretty breathtaking,” she says. Barry Rogerson of B Rex Photo Design chats to the Chronicle about the art of framing.

RAGLAN

When and why did you start B Rex photo design? I started B.rex Photo Design around 20 years ago as a small business resulting from working for Pete Coddington at Heart & Soul in Hamilton. I started supplying his store with small prints framed with recycled timber, then framed some of local Raglan artist Ken Thomas's artworks and basically it grew from there. What came first - photography or framing? Photography came first as I developed an interest and inspiration through surfing magazine photos and spending time with Raglan photographer Jwan Milek in the 70's. How did you learn the art of framing? I am basically self taught and learnt the craft of picture framing by default and trial and error. What do you most like to photograph?

I mostly like to photograph seascapes & landscapes, trying to find interesting angles, different viewpoints and moods. What do you enjoy most about your business? I really enjoy being in business in my hometown, especially meeting people and being able to offer a service framing their various works of art & items that are special to them. What are the challenges you face? I don't seem to have too many challenges facing me at the moment. I have had issues with supply of raw materials but that has improved significantly in the last few weeks. I have a steady flow of work coming in and retail sales have been steady since the end of lockdown. How did you cope with lockdown on a personal and business level? Lockdown turned out to be ok on a personal level, as it gave me a much needed break and Raglan was a great place to be. On a business level

I was lucky to have a small backlog of work and was grateful to have some government assistance to get through. What business plans do you have for the coming months? For the coming months I don't have too much planned, just hoping things continue as they are and my website continues to grow a bigger customer base. I am looking forward to summer though. What services do you offer? The services I offer are; General framing of photographs, artworks, certificates etc. as well as frame and glass repairs. I can also offer photo printing, some touch up and printing of old photos and I retail sales of my photos, framed and in print form of various sizes. How do people contact you? People can contact me by phone/ txt at 0210410374. Email b.rex.raglan@gmail.com and through my website at brexphotodesign.co.nz

Xtreme Zero Waste L.L.C is a company governed by Xtreme Zero Waste Charitable Trust. The Trustees of the Trust remain the same. The Directors of the Limited Liability Company are made up from 3 Trustees of the parent Trust and 3 Directors representing the Management Team. The change in structure reflects the growth of XZW over the last 20 years and the need to modify our structure to take on new activity. The new structure will allow the Charitable Trust to scope new projects with the Raglan Community and allow the LLC to crank on with day to day activity associated with zero waste to landfill programme.

Come on down and check out the new revitalised space

After a three month hiatus due to lock-down, the Whāingaroa Environment Centre Hub has reopened to the community with a fresh new look. The team have all been working super hard to tackle a very early "spring clean" including plastering, painting and teaching team member hoarders the art of "KonMari Method" (tidying up and clearing out) sustainably. Not only can you learn about our various community projects at the Centre Hub, but you can also learn about the work being down by other Whāingaroa organisations.

Longtime local lensman itches for warmer waters A ussie’s warmer waters and the proverbial “sevenyear itch” have prompted well known local photographer Jwan Milek to sell up his Raglan West apartment and photo gallery, auction off the works and head back across the ditch.

Jwan – who grew up in coastal Wollongong, south of Sydney – first came here way back in 1971. “I arrived on an ocean liner after a three-day trip,” he told the Chronicle. “I came straight to Raglan and surfed every day for four months.” But now the 69-year-old Australian has ‘surfer’s ear’ – a result of chronic cold water exposure – and these days finds the ocean too chilly to be able to surf enough. Warmer climes are beckoning, Jwan says, and it’s “onto the next adventure”. Jwan reckons he’s pretty well set up on both sides of the Tasman, having moved his family to Byron Bay for eight years, then back here again about seven years ago. “It’s the seven-year itch,” he laughs. Oldest daughter Kylie and her young family have since returned to Byron Bay, a surfing mecca on New South Wales’ northeastern border that’s often said to be a bigger version of Raglan. Jwan agrees Raglan’s definitely shaping up that way. “Now with its crowds and its cafes, yoga on the beach and on paddleboards … it’s exactly the same as Byron

Bay but without the (warm winter) weather.” Against that, Raglan during the recent Covid-19 lockdown reminded Jwan of his early days here when “there were no cars around”. It was a waste of time hitchhiking to the surf, he recalls. “You had to walk.” With this in mind, lockdown for Jwan felt more like freedom than isolation. He cycled every day – got fitter – and used the downtime to upskill further in photography, which he says has always been an abiding passion. “I learnt so much,” he says of his time in lockdown, citing as an example his mastering of more advanced editing and photoshop techniques. He’s also filed lots of “isolation” photos, recording a time in history that will probably never happen again. He says one memorable shot is of people biking on the beach, hands in the air, “feeling free”. His personal favourite however is of a lone woman bagpiper at the cenotaph downtown on Anzac Day, a time when Bow St is normally crowded with people paying their respects to locals who served in the two world wars. Jwan says opening his own gallery a few years back – in highprofile premises on busy Wainui Rd – was something he had always wanted to do. “Now I can tick it off and move on.” He’s also been able to live onsite as there’s a charming apartment tucked in behind the gallery. The rare dual-use property previously

Warmer climes are beckoning Jwan and it's "onto the next adventure". housed Tony Sly Pottery – before it shifted to the Raglan wharf – and then a local Flooring Xtra business. “It’ll probably turn into a yoga retreat next,” Jwan quips, given the discipline’s recent rise in popularity in Raglan. Jwan’s specialised over the years in wedding, surfing and landscape photography – and is perhaps best known for his iconic shot of four fellow surfers dwarfed by a visiting Orca at Manu Bay.

It was Christmas morning 1999, Jwan recalls, and he’d just come in from a surf himself. That picture still sells, he says. The Wharf Kitchen and Bar – where daughter Cherie works parttime – has a display of all his Orca shots over the years. “I got some beautiful ones,” he says proudly. And he hasn’t finished yet. Just a couple of months ago when the Orca came into the harbour Jwan captured them surfing the waves at Ngarunui, and again at sunset from

Wainamu Beach when they swam back out to sea. “Beautiful … unbelievable,” he says in awe of the frequent visitors to our waters. RAGLAN Chronicle 7

An Update from the team at Raglan Medical MEET THE NEW TEAM MEMBERS:

Kia ora We’re delighted to announce a few new additions to the Raglan Medical Team and allied health professionals working alongside us in our premises:

WEST COAST COUNSELLING:

Ann Wright: I joined the Raglan Medical team four weeks ago as a Medical Receptionist after gaining 5 1/2years experience in a similar role in Dinsdale. I’m a local of many years; some of you may recognise me from my previous roles in Raglan at the Westpac Bank and the Post Office. I'm delighted to be working back in our community and I’m thoroughly enjoying seeing old friends, familiar faces and meeting new people. Looking forward to seeing you at Raglan Medical.

Melody Macleod: Kia Ora, I am looking forward to returning to the team at Raglan Medical after 6 months of maternity leave. I enjoy the many aspects of General Practice, in particular, women’s and children’s health, having completed a Diploma in Paediatrics in 2017. Outside of my role as a GP, I enjoy family time, running and being outdoors. My husband is a Primary School Teacher at Te Mata School and we love being part of the Whaingaroa community.

Debbie Klenner: After moving to Raglan permanently from Morrinsville at the start of this year, I was very fortunate to have been recently appointed to assist with Covid screening at Raglan Medical. Typically, in these uncertain times, the demand for that role changed overnight, but I am delighted that I have now been appointed as a Practice Nurse instead! I was previously working as a registered nurse at Waikato Hospital where I was exposed to a wide range of nursing disciplines. These included surgery, medical, orthopaedics, oncology, paediatrics, renal and others. My particular interest is in Emergency Nursing and my first love is the sea. When I'm not working I will be fishing, swimming, canoeing and maybe even surfing...after all this is Raglan. Testing

INLINE PODIATRY: THE PHYSIO ROOM RAGLAN:

The Physio Room Raglan is Raglan’s newest Physiotherapy clinic located in the new Raglan Medical building. Although, there is a new name and new location, Jenny Watts has been treating the Raglan community for 11 years. She is excited to be back working alongside the Raglan Medical team after a 6 year stint working solely from home at Jenny Watts Physio. She has two other highly experienced physios on her team: Otto Hofman and Katie Richardson (who is currently on maternity leave). The clinic is open Mon - Fri from 7am-7pm but has 24 hour phone reception: 0226590427. You can also book online at thephysioroomraglan.co.nz .

Sherry Coulson: Kia Ora. Always a privilege to work closely with this group of experienced Health Professionals, thanks for inviting me. I am a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist working in Whaingaroa Raglan for the past 20 years. I work closely with the Rural Sector in Critical Incident Management and Facilitator Debrief.....my particular passion. In general, Counselling provides a confidential and professional service where Clients discuss things that cannot be shared with family or friends. We can use this space for Grief and Anger Management, treatment of Depression and Anxiety, increasing Emotional Intelligence and Personal Growth, managing Loss and developing Coping Skills....ultimately, CBT is about creating positive changes in our lives. We offer long and short term therapy, Private and Pinnacle/Hauraki PHO funded therapy sessions and work with Adult Clients who are experiencing a wide range of issues and challenges that prevent them from living a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

Janet Murphy: I am very excited to work alongside the team at Raglan Medical. I will be running a Podiatry clinic every Friday. I visited Raglan from Ireland in 2007, fell in love and never left. Qualifying as a Podiatrist in 1999 I specialize in foot care; diagnosing and treating problems affecting the feet, ankle and lower legs. Including: callus and corns; thickened, fungal and in-grown toenails; diabetic and high risk feet; heel/arch/shin pain; orthotics; footwear advice. No referral is required, I’m ACC registered, Gold Card discounts are available and veterans are fully funded. To make an appointment you can email: janet@inlinepodiatry.com or call me on 07 825 8303 or 021 212 7922 Janet Murphy BSc (Hons) Podiatry

8 RAGLAN Chronicle

Otto Hofman: My name is Otto Hofman. I have been lucky enough to call Raglan my home for the last 8 years. I am a Dutch trained physiotherapist with over 20 years experience.

Jenny Watts I’ve been living in Raglan for 11 years and NZ since 1994. I came to Raglan for the surf and have stayed because I love the community and scenery. I have been working for myself for 6 years but have been a physio for 21 years. I have a passion for sports and traumatic injuries. I am trained in acupuncture and Pilates and sometimes use these tools to complement my treatment. I love spending time with my family, including my two young boys, and surfing the outside points.

EXTENDED OPENING HOURS

PRICE INCREASES

From 4th August we will resume our late night clinics on Tuesdays and have appointments available to 7pm, as these slots are limited please ensure you book well in advance.

From Monday 27th July the cost of doctor consult will be $19.50 and a nurse consult will cost $15.

I worked over 10 years in the UK in a variety of settings including as a clinical specialist for one of the Centres of Orthopaedic excellence before moving to New Zealand. I enjoy treating a variety of musculo-skeletal conditions including post operative and post injury rehabilitation and have completed advanced acupuncture training courses. Outside work I enjoy surfing, spending time with my family and the lifestyle that Raglan offers.

Plastic Free July P

lastic Free July is almost over but our habits can continue on. Perhaps this month has been a great time to observe what plastics are coming into our lives, and get curious with what swaps we can make. Here’s some ideas to help with one of the hardest places at home, THE KITCHEN! Get out the Edmonds Cookbook… Because so much of our kai these days comes packaged, we could try our hand, together as a whanau or flat, at baking our own bread, muesli bars, crackers etc. But, this means getting ingredients plastic free too! But the widest selection of bulk food supplies are over in Hamilton. SO FAR AWAY! We hear you. But recently

Leftovers and lunchboxes… Easy switches for cling-film: Pop it in a container, or beeswax wrap it. We can easily learn to make your own via Timebank Raglan.

Jar Pool Whaingaroa was created! It’s like car-pooling, but your jars take the ride. Join the FB group, and take someone else’s jars with you into the city, or pop yours in when someone else is headed that way. Save time, save emissions, save ourselves from plastic packaging! Fruit and Veg Plastic Free… Plants have pretty good packaging; their skin! The healthiest way for us (and the planet) is to pluck them from the ground. Join Whaingaroa Community Gardens (they have regular group working bees) or head along to Crop Swap the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month to reap the benefits of locally grown produce package free.

Share your Plastic Free journey with us @ plasticfreeraglan.nz #plasticfreeraglan

Never fear, meat eaters, you can take your clean reusable container into Raglan Butchers and they will be happy to fill it for you. Spot their BYO FRIENDLY STICKER on the door. Try it out at Raglan Fish too! Don’t forget about washing up… Switch microplastic-shedding sponges for crochet cotton ones. Detergent bottles can be refilled at The Herbal Dispensary, or check out new local business SoapShakers.co.nz

Adoption of the Annual Plan 2020/21 and Fees and Charges In accordance with section 95 of the Local Government Act 2002, at its meeting on 29 June 2020 the Waikato District Council adopted the Annual Plan 2020/21 and made minor amendments to the Long Term Plan 2018-2028 Fees and Charges. The Annual Plan is Council’s budget for one financial year, explaining how the Council will fund projects, activities and services identified for that year. The Annual Plan 2020/21 represents year 3 of the Long Term Plan 2018-2028. Council also amended its Fees and Charges as part of the Annual Plan process. Fees and charges are used to assist in the operation and maintenance of a variety of services provided to the community.

This is the largest area of remaining native forest that is close to Hamilton and it is of considerable conservation value. This is due to the variety of plant life and wildlife habitats available. It is a nationally important habitat for taonga species such as kokako, kereru, North Island robin, kaka, long-tailed bats as well as rare plants like pua o Te Reinga/ wood rose. The northernmost kaikawaka for the western side of the North Island grow here, and Te Kauri Park is the stronghold for the last remaining southern-most Kauri trees. Why we are doing pest control Without pest control in this culturally important area, we will lose the forest canopy and with it the habitats of our taonga species. This will in turn adversely affect catchment health and water quality. Reducing the number of possums and rodents feeding on Mt Pirongia’s forest will improve the survival and health of a wide range of plant and animal species such as kokako. Ongoing control is required to ensure the breeding success of these and other threatened taonga species. Predator control works Aerial 1080 has been particularly successful in the management of kokako in the central North Island. In an eight-year study, it effectively ‘rescued’ North Island kokako, reducing predation to the point where 50% of nests were able to produce young. Without predator control, most female kokako are killed while sitting on the nest. By the end of the study, the population in areas with predator control had increased eight-fold. Method of predator control DOC and WRC have worked closely with affected marae on the desired outcomes, consulted with stakeholders and the community as part of forming this control strategy. Between 5 August and 30 September 2020, DOC will apply baits containing biodegradable 1080 over the area shown on the map. A pre-feed of non-toxic baits will occur first which will condition the possums and rodents to eating the bait pellets. The toxic cereal bait pellets contain 0.15% of 1080, are cylindrical and approximately 16 mm in diameter. They are dyed green to deter birds and contain a cinnamon lure to attract pests. Non-toxic pre-feed cylindrical pellets are approximately 16 mm in diameter and sandy coloured (not dyed). The aerial operation uses calibrated buckets and GIS mapping technology to ensure bait drops in the designated area. Please see map attached. The pesticide is poisonous to humans and domestic animals. Always remember: •

DO NOT touch or eat the bait

WATCH CHILDREN at all times

DO NOT EAT animals from this area

Toxic baits and carcasses are DEADLY to DOGS

Observe these rules whenever you see warning signs placed at the public access points to treatment areas. Warning signs will remain in place until baits and carcasses are no longer a risk, possibly for more than six months. If you suspect poisoning Always contact:Your local doctor or local hospital or the National Poisons Centre: 0800 764 766 (urgent calls) or 03 479 7248 or dial 111. Pirongia and Te Kauri Forests Application Area For further information, contact the DOC’s Operations Manager, Waikato District, phone 07 850 8378, or the Project Manager, Waikato Regional Council, 401 Grey Street, Hamilton East, phone 0800 800 401, or the Contractor EcoFX Aerial Ops Controller 07 873 8130, 32 Huiputea Drive Otorohanga. Visit www.doc.govt.nz/tiakina-nga-manu A detailed map of the application areas may be viewed at DOC’s District Office, 5 Northway Street, Te Rapa, Hamilton 3200 or https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/pests-and-threats/ pesticide-summaries/

You can view the Annual Plan or the Fees and Charges documents online at www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz and hard copies will shortly be available to view at our offices and libraries.
