Student activists from Raglan Area School marched the streets of Raglan last Friday to urge action on climate change. All images thanks to Ken Hansen.

undreds of Raglan Area School students and community members marched the streets of Raglan to bring awareness and urgency to the global issue of climate change and demand that adults and authorities take urgent action to ensure global temperatures do not exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Over the past few weeks, three year-13 students, Sequoia Gavin-McCabe, Nikau Hansen and Kai Woolf have actively rallied the support for their strike from school management and the wider community urging that attention be directed toward the issue.

“Our reality is becoming a world where everything is hotter, colder, dryer, wetter, windier and more destructive. Which, to be frank, is pretty scary.” Says Nikau. “We certainly don’t want to give such a dangerous living to our children. So it’s high time that we treat this as the crisis that it is.” Says Kai Woolf The students lead hundreds on a march from Raglan Area School through Raglan town and back to school in time for their afternoon classes. A number of Raglan businesses also stood in solidarity with the school strike by closing their doors and joining the march. Mayor of the Waikato District Council, Alan Sanson is a signee to the Mayors Declaration on Climate

Change, however little to no action has been taken to develop and implement the promised “ambitious action plans that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support resilience within our own councils and for our local communities.” “We, the youth, are officially empowered and we will not be undermined or silenced. You did not take action yesterday, it will not wait for tomorrow, change must come today.“ demanded Sequoia Gavin-McCabe one of the Raglan student leaders. R.C.

Sunset vigil held for Christchurch victims Al salam Alaikum Peace be upon you. And peace be upon all of us. Mr Speaker the 15th of March will now forever be a day etched in our collective memories. Battling the waves for mental wellbeing F

ormer British commando Bobby Ball is on a mission to get veterans in the water to combat mental health issues. X Forces Mission Surf at Ngarunui Beach on Sunday, March 24 is the pilot event bringing the wider veteran community together using surfing as ocean therapy. Inspired by similar groups in California and Australia, Bobby wants to connect the veteran community through surfing and provide the sense of camaraderie lost to the veterans once they leave the forces. Bobby knows too well the enormous toll transitioning back to civilian life can take on ex-service men, women and their family members. This can range from dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), other depression related illnesses, anger issues, drug and alcohol abuse, and can force some into isolation and unable to find the help they need. “Most veterans struggle to find a career or life that matches the defence force, many isolate themselves, feel as though they never fit in, have relationship problems and never find a way to get back on track. Loneliness

and boredom after serving adds to the problem,” he says. It was 15 years ago when Bobby and another serving commando buddy, about to be deployed to Iraq, hit the waves at Whale Bay for the first time. They weren’t expecting the 6-foot breakers they encountered and both kicked into survival mode putting their army training into full use that day. “We finished the day with massive grins on our faces and I knew from that day on, I was always going to surf. Surfing is not the solution to all one’s woes or problems, it’s not a cure but there is something in it.’ Bobby formed Veterans of Combined Forces Surfing Association (VCFSA) to share the sense of release he found in what he calls Blue Mind, a term he borrowed from the book of the same name by Dr Wallace J Nichols. The book confirmed for Bobby that there really was something in the healing benefits he had come to experience from surfing. “It’s about being in the moment – you don’t have anything else to think about.” Bobby’s not on his own when it comes to fighting for veteran’s welfare,

former SAS soldier and Victoria Cross recipient Willie Apiata recently started Post Transition an organisation advocating for better care for former NZ Defence Force personnel, particularly around the treatment of PTSD. Going back to nature to be soothed and healed has played a vital part in Bobby’s own recovery since discovering surfing all those years ago. “Get in the water, walk beside water, move across its surface, get under it, sit in it, leap into it, listen to it, touch it, close your eyes and drink a big glass,” he says. “Working with VCFSA and my incredible board of trustees keeps driving me to help others discover and embrace their own personal connection to water.” Bobby reckons there’s no better place than Raglan to hold the inaugural surfing event and he’s been overwhelmed by the support from the surfing and local business community. Janine Jackson For more information about the event and VCFSA check out their Facebook page or contact bobbybvcsfa@gmail.com.

Busy Raglan baby whisperer set to be new mum, author all over again

Sharlene at home with young George and her baby bump.

W

ith both a second book and a second baby on the way, it’s shaping up as another milestone year for Raglan-domiciled baby whisperer Sharlene Poole. The 42 year old breathed a sigh of relief recently when she pushed the ‘send’ button on her computer and – just like that – her latest manuscript was off to the publishers. “Book 2, first draft...can’t believe I’ve made it to the finish line...well almost!” she posted on her Little Miracles Facebook page. Now six months’ pregnant and with toddler George teething, Sharlene can’t exactly put her feet up. But the anticipation of her new baby mid year, and the publication of ‘Keep On Whispering’ later this year, is motivation aplenty to carry on. Even so Sharlene admits it’s been a bit of a struggle putting together her follow-up guide for new parents, and is grateful her

publishers Penguin Books New Zealand extended the original deadline. “It’s hard earning enough to pay the bills as well as trying to write,” she reckons. Sharlene confidently took on the Penguin contract when baby George was just six months old but as both a new homeowner and a new mum then, going it alone, she reckons she definitely had a nagging guilt while doing other things like planting her veggie garden in what little spare time there was. “I felt I should be writing,” she says. So it was an “immense weight off my shoulders” when she was finally able to send her 173-page manuscript off to Penguin. Now being edited, it will to and fro until Sharlene and her editor are happy with the result. And all going well maybe there’ll be a book launch in Raglan later this year, she hints.

Sharlene’s first baby whispering book back in 2012 was all about caring for a newborn through to a one year old. ‘Keep On Whispering’ picks up where that left off and deals with the child from one to five years. Arguably the country’s leading baby expert – with many seminars, instructional DVDs and for a time a regular TV slot to her credit – Sharlene was a preschool teacher before focusing on babies. And she’s had plenty of exposure to toddlers and preschoolers meantime – through work and family commitments – to draw on for a new book which she concedes “covers so much”. Everything from parenting to screentime, toilet training and setting boundaries gets a look-in this time round. At 20 months George has also been going through the toddler stage and boundary-setting is to the fore right now in the Poole household, Sharlene laughs. Like any working mum Sharlene finds daily life quite a juggle at times. Her mother arrived from the Coromandel on Wednesday last week to look after George for a couple of days while Sharlene headed to Auckland for a seminar and a home visit. “I try to jam in as much as possible,” she says of her fortnightly trips away which are interspersed with daytime consults back in Raglan – when George is asleep – that keep her baby whispering business ticking over. There are also phone and Skype calls to clients, both here and overseas. The sleeping and feeding schedules of 4-month olds to one year olds are her biggest line of work. “A lot of mums are going back to their jobs (then).” Sharlene’s big on establishing good baby/toddler habits. After all it’s only by keeping George to a strict routine, she points out, that this multi-tasking mum has been able to time those all-important consults with his daily sleeps. Edith Symes

Golf update: Waikato ladies pennant golf competition M arch 1 saw the Raglan Golf Club host the first section of the Waikato Ladies Pennants competition.

Forty-eight ladies from 12 Waikato golf clubs entered into the 9-hole competition. They brought with them caddies and a Waikato Golf official and representative who ran the competition. This is the first time Raglan Golf Club has hosted the event. Howard (Greenkeeper) Bruce and Neil (Volunteers) and the Raglan Golf Vets, had done a wonderful job in making sure the greens looked amazing in the morning sunshine.

Forty-eight ladies from 12 Waikato golf clubs entered into the 9-hole competition.

Some of the ladies found the hilly course and sheep a bit of a challenge, but this only added to the fun and excitement of the day. Raglan golfing ladies provided a sumptuous lunch for the visitors, local golfers and many volunteers that helped make the day the success it was. The next golfing club to host this event is Hukanui and Raglan have now set the bar higher than expected with regard to the food provided for the day. Many thanks goes out not only to the ladies who volunteered their time to provide the morning tea and lunch, but also to the sponsors for the day. Four Square Raglan, Top Cut Butchery, Jack Peel,

Korock and Christine Thomson. Also, our Raglan golf ladies baked fruit loaves, cup-cakes, blueberry muffins and made delicious sandwiches. Hukanui golf club was the winner of the day. Hamilton came in second and Raglan achieved third place for the day. Our local ladies Jan Brightwell, Helen Goodwin, Annie Highet and Amanda Cron played a great game to achieve the third placing in the first Waikato Ladies Pennants competition. This competition is held over five rounds at different golf courses. We wish our Raglan golf ladies all the best and good luck in the competition. Raglan Golf Club

With team names of U3, The Paddy's,and the Sean's it was all laughter and luck as golfers took part in the Annual St Patrick's golf day, last Sunday.Following the golf all participants sat down to fine Irish Stew and Green spuds with Irish Brownie to follow. Our next major tournament is our annual Easter Tournament kindly sponsored by LJHooker.

nother glorious morning dawned providing perfect conditions for playing bowls. This week saw those bowlers who have been playing for five years or less put their skills to the test to see who would win the title of Under 5 Years Singles Champion. Unfortunately, there were no women to play in this group and, not all those men who were eligible to play were actually able to play so the field was very small with three players this year. They played a round robin system of play. That means that they have to play each other making it three games to be played. First up Gordon MIlls drew to play Darryl Hawkins with Alan Price marking. An interesting game as they played it very close indeed, with Gordon requiring to score one shot on the last end to take it out and it became a measure to decide it in Gordon’s favour. Gordon, being the winner, then played Alan Price, with Darryl being the ‘Marker’. This game was not so close, but still interesting to watch. Alan won this round.

In the third round Darryl played Alan providing we spectators with plenty to stick around to watch… Eventually Darryl reached 21 shots first giving him a win. This made it ‘one win‘ each just to make the day interesting….To decide the winner we had to use the ‘total number of ends won’ to sort them out…Alan became the victor with 20 ends, Darryl came in second with 18 ends followed by Gordon scoring 17 ends. This competition showed just how level the skills of bowling was between these three mates. Congratulations to you all The best of luck to all of our Champions who will be playing against all other Waikato Club Champions during April and May…. Roll-up are still held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 12.45pm with a small fee charged. Our premier event, the Western 1000, is to be played on Thursday, March 28, where there will be 28 teams of four players (112 players) so come on down and have a peep. Happy Bowling, Eileen Stephens
