marine oil spill at Raglan Wharf exercise last week. Council’s regional hazards team leader Rick Liefting says the exercise is essential to bring new staff up to speed with how to respond, as well as refresh the skills of experienced oil spill response staff. “While we hope never to need to do it in real life, from time-to-time we do have such spills on our region’s waters, so we need to ensure our training is up-to-date.” Staff familiarised themselves with oil spill response gear and deployed booms as

we have the resources and necessary skills to respond swiftly and effectively,” Rick says. In the ‘Exercise Raglan’ scenario, staff were required to protect the harbour and shoreline from oil leaking from a sunken fishing vessel at the Raglan Wharf. Waikato

When did you first discover you had a voice? I've always sung - I can't remember a time when I didn't. We have a photo of me singing Christmas carols with my Mum at the piano when I was about 3 or 4. What did you get involved in to develop your love of singing? I was just always around music. My family loved music so there was always lots playing and we would often go out to performances of one kind or another¬. The singing developed as a part of just loving music - who can resist singing along? Do you play instruments as well? Yes - badly! I've tried my hand at loads of instruments over the years but singing has always been the thing that has stuck and that has best expressed who I am as a musician. Tell me about your opera experience. That's a big question... Opera is really only one small part of the world of classical singing, although it's the thing that most people recognise as your job title. For people outside classical music, "opera singer" means classical singer. For people inside classical music, "opera singer" means singing in theatrical productions of operas (as well as opera gala concerts). In reality, classical singing careers can consist of some opera, some concert, some religious music, some song repertoire, sometimes being a soloist and sometimes being in a chorus or choir. And more and more, classical singers are working as crossover artists into genres like jazz or pop (commonly called "popera"). My own opera experience is

really only a very small part of my life as a singer and, to be honest, doesn't contain the most magical or important moments I've had in singing. Do you teach as well? I teach a little. It's pretty hard these days to find people who actually want to learn to sing classical music. I've taught all kinds of people whatever music they like to sing because the basic principles are the same. If you want to go very far in a particular genre, then you need specialised teaching. What advice would you give someone who is keen to pursue a career in music? A career in music is a tricky thing to pursue. Sometimes you chase it forever and never find it. Other times, you're not even looking and it finds you. My main piece of advice would be to love it because you love it and not because it's a vehicle to some larger goal (and definitely not because you think it's going to make you any money!!). A lot of people try to put upcoming musicians off their dreams of a career, but I completely disagree with that approach. We need musicians so much and it's great if you want to be one of those people. You just need to be realistic about how you're going to pay your bills, whether you need to do something else as well to stay afloat, and whether the day-to-day reality of being a working musician (in whatever genre) is actually something you want. When did you move to Raglan and what bought you here? I moved to Raglan about 5 years ago with my partner Sue. We run a business in Equine Assisted Counselling called EarthHorse Aotearoa - Sue started the business and I'm just starting to work in it too, having recently trained as a counsellor. We love being here for the incredible surroundings and fabulous people. It had always been a dream to live here and we made it come true. What is happening for you in 2019? For me, 2019 is mostly about learning to be a new mum. Our son, Isaac, was born in October last year and he keeps me pretty busy. I work a couple of days a week counselling young people and their families in Cambridge, and the rest of my time is devoted to being on the farm and with him. I have a few gigs booked but things are pretty quiet for now, which is fine. Isaac and I have been making YouTube videos of lullabies - I've enjoyed them so much that I'm thinking of doing some concerts for babies - I'll sing lullabies and they can just sleep! My friends and I are also keen to do another Pop-Up Opera concert out here in Raglan. We did one a while back and it was a great time - I often get asked when we'll do another.

A

generous grant from Trust Waikato of $15,000 will help support operational costs at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre in the coming year.

The Trust Waikato community trust donates over $10 million to Waikato communities each year. These grants range in size including small one-off grants, regular

annual operating grants for community organisations, and large capital grants for one-off major community projects. Raglan Arts Council chair Rodger Gallagher says community funders play a vital role in keeping the Old School open. “As Raglan Old School Arts Centre is not funded by local government this large grant for Trust Waikato is essential for us to keep going. We are grateful for their support.” Old School Arts Centre

Our occasional series on locals with a real Raglan history behind them

Sweetmans farming around Raglan district for going on 135 years now

Family proud of link to NZ literary great

A

n autobiographical novel by one of New Zealand’s literary greats isn’t the sort of reading material you’d expect to grace a farmhouse table, but then Raglan’s Sweetman clan are “quite proud” of their connection to her, says Tim Sweetman.

Men of the land: Matt, left, and Tim on Matt's Ruapuke Rd farm.

Y

ou can’t help but feel Te Mata farmer Matt Sweetman’s understating things somewhat when he admits to “a bit of local knowledge” that helps him sell rural real estate on the side. After all, the 72 year old’s not only been farming in the Raglan area his whole adult life but is also a third-generation descendant of pioneer district farmer Charles Sweetman, a carpenter who way back in 1885 walked into the Crown Lands Office in Auckland and purchased sight-unseen a block of scrub near Te Uku. Charles may have wanted a life of reading and studying away from the rat-race but instead he and his wife Caroline – who as historian R T Vernon describes it “was to adapt to the pioneer life as her husband never did” – sowed the seeds of quite a family farming dynasty here. The Chronicle caught up with Matt at his 550-acre drystock farm, the entrance to which is on a tricky blind corner about a kilometre down Ruapuke Rd. It has expansive views from gently rolling hills all the way out to the Te Uku wind turbines and beyond. Matt’s equally well known other half – Pauline, a senior teacher and assistant principal at Raglan Area School where she herself was once a student – was away in Wellington, but his 77-year-old brother Tim happened to be visiting from rural Tamahere where he’s in “semi retirement”.

On the day the Chronicle visited Matt had been busy around the farm feeding out silage that he hadn’t planned on using until midyear. He and Pauline, who met at a party in Raglan and wed in 1973, have been in their current farmhouse since 2001; previously they were “up the road” – slightly closer to Ruapuke – on a farm in the Mt Karioi foothills. Matt said that farm, along with other family land in the vicinity, was now in the hands of fourthgeneration Hardy Sweetman, the son of Matt and Tim’s elder brother Phillip. Phillip and his wife Joyce – who also had three other children including Lara, a local teacher, and Lee who has recently returned to Raglan – retired some years ago to a water’s-edge property in Nihinihi Ave, Raglan West, and he died there late last year. Hardy’s named after his grandfather, who with his wife Jean had six children in all: besides Phillip, Tim and Matt they also had daughters Penny, Juliet and Nina. The original Hardy was determined to settle his three boys on farms – and succeeded. While much of the Sweetman family’s more recent history centres on the Te Mata and Ruapuke districts, Te Uku loomed large in earlier decades. Matt said the original Sweetman property was “up in the hills” behind Te Uku. “There’s a Sweetman Rd still up there,” he says. “On maps, not signposts.”

Iris Wilkinson, better known as the poet and author Robin Hyde, had a “liaison” with Matt and Tim’s Uncle Harry while working with him at The Dominion newspaper in Wellington. The liaison ended sadly. Harry – who dreamt of becoming a Fleet Street journalist – left Iris to travel to England, but died there of septicaemia soon after arrival. The Sweetmans say Iris – seeking consolation from their father, Hardy – later described Harry as the love of her life. Hardy, in fact, named Tim after one of her main characters in ‘The Godwits Fly’, Iris’s autobiographical fifth novel. Tim told the Chronicle the Sweetman family was proud of Iris because she was an unconventional heroine who, as the country’s first woman parliamentary reporter, “stood up to and challenged the Government”.

Tim and Matt did not know one of the two ‘Good George’ many years now – but conceded their pioneering grandfather as founders. They use the grain from he “can’t stay here (on the farm) he died in 1935 – before they the Frankton-based brewery to forever”. And what did the brothers think were born – but heard he was a supplement cattle feed on their of how Raglan had developed? hard man. They pointed to how lifestyle block. Having been around Raglan “I liked it better 30 years ago he allowed Hardy, his sixth child, to remain at school only until most of his life,Tim confessed he when we knew everybody,” said Standard 6. After that, he worked became “a bit nostalgic” on his Matt. “It’s gone from a sleepy on the farm and around the district. occasional visits back to see the little town to tourist destination, almost too popular for old settlers In contrast, Tim and Matt family. Matt and Pauline have a son (like us).” recall a more idyllic upbringing Tim – more diplomatically – at ‘Riverside’, a property just east and daughter, but Matt said neither of the Waingaro turnoff where were interested in farming. He said “it was a backwater for such their father built their home about himself is still happily farming – a long time”. Matt: “And now (downtown) 1930. Besides having swimming and enjoying “helping people out” through his part-time work for it’s a street full of strangers.” spots “all around”, they’d go L J Hooker, which he’s done for Edith Symes waterskiing in the harbour from Waingaro Landing and whitebaiting only a short walk away down Waingaro Rd. They recalled that an MP for Hauraki-Waikato aunt worked at the nearby Te Uku Post Office, where the postmaster was Ernie Moon, a “cripple” who was a colourful character about the district. Ernie, they said, was also a great mate of their dad, Hardy, who took him away on holidays back in the 1930s. The three sons went to Te Uku School, then to New Plymouth High as boarders. They all played rugby but Matt insisted Tim was “the best” (Tim himself recalled playing for a championshipwinning Frankton team). 0800 624 882 Tim revealed he now hauraki.waikato@parliament.govt.nz lived on a 10-acre lifestyle block at Tamahere with his @nanaiamahuta NanaiaMahutaMP daughter Genaya and son1130 Victoria Street, Whitiora, Hamilton 3200 in-law Jason Macklow,

Raglan Kindergarten celebrates milestone birthday R aglan Kindergarten celebrates 40 years with the Waikato Kindergarten Association this year but they’ve been in the business of educating young minds for a lot longer. Head teacher Isabel Crawforth says the community celebration on Friday, May 24 at 4pm only tells part of a story more than 60 years in the making. “We might look 40 but we’re actually 62 years old,” she jokes. Isabel believes the decision to join the kindergarten association in 1979 was most likely based on the level of support, both financially and professionally, offered by the association. Looking back over the minutes from the earliest days in Raglan Kindergarten’s life show the first meeting held in November 1956 at the Union Church Hall on Stewart St sowed the seed for one of the very first formal early childhood education centres in Raglan. With only 12 parents in attendance at the meeting it was decided that there was more support in the community and an election was held to appoint office holders. There was some dispute over the name with Raglan Private Kindergarten being the

first name offered but this was changed to Raglan Kindergarten as the attendees thought the word ‘private’ might send the wrong message. Raglan Kindergarten opened its door in February 1957 at the Union Church Hall with a head teacher, Mrs Friar, 19 children and room for five more. It cost one pound a term to attend and teacher’s wages were six pounds a month. “When I look back through the minutes, I’m really struck by the number of family names who were involved back then and are still acitve in our community. It also seems that it was mostly women who were involved in this community organisation,” Isabel says. “These days, Dads are so much more involved in their children’s early years.” Throughout the minutes there is also a roll call of familiar names that Isabel says have either recently been involved or are still involved with the kindergarten. “The ongoing support for the kindergarten from the Raglan community is quite incredible and looking through the minutes it’s no wonder why. Everyone seems to have had some sort of relationship with us over the years,” she says.

F

riday May 10 saw a good muster of members to prepare everything for

our Hangi Tournament on Saturday.

Then at the break of day on Saturday the hangi was put down, pork, stuffing, chickens, potatoes, kumara, pumpkin and cabbage

and left to cook till lunchtime. It came out beautifully cooked. By the time the competitors arrived on Saturday morning the weather was still foggy but It cleared enough to enable play to get underway by 9.30am. Sixteen teams from Taupiri, Huntly, Frankton Junction, Hamilton Cossie, Pirongia, Piopio, six local Raglan teams as well as a Sponsors team from Hilda Ross Retirement Village in Hamilton, took up the challenge for the day after having had a lovely cup of warm soup and morning tea. Two games of 1 hour and 15 minutes were played before lunch with another two after lunch, finishing up around 3.40pm followed by afternoon tea and prizegiving. By this time the day was a lovely sunny day. Trish de Jong, our sponsor from Hilda Ross Retirement Village, presented some

bowling cloths and shopping bags as ‘spot prizes’, prior to presenting the overall winners with their prizes. The team from Hilda Ross Retirement Village, skipped by Neil Clark, won the day with three wins and 60 points, with one of our local teams in second place with three wins and 50 points, being Heather Dalbeth, Murray Eddy and Sooty Wilson. Third place went to Fritz Cameron’s team from Pirongia with two wins and two draws plus 40 points. It is great to see a number of our new members taking part in our tournaments. Good on you and keep it going. Congratulations to you all, well done. Our next winter tournament is scheduled for Saturday 15th June. Meantime our roll-ups are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 12.45pm. weather permitting. Happy bowling, Eileen Stephens

ealth in Your Hands is a column connecting with older members of our community.

This month the Raglan Disability Support Group held its Annual General Meeting in May, and Phyllis Mc Eldowney agreed to stand as president. Now in her eighties has Phyll been a loyal member almost since the group began in 1993 and has been the president for the eleven years. The Group was started by the late Eileen Miller and her daughter, Carol Johnson, is open to all and gives support to elderly people, and those with disabilities and their caregivers. A meeting is held on the first Wednesday of every month and is presently run by the ladies from Care and Craft. Many of the original members where women in their early 60’s

and were already receiving a pension and were often looking after spouses and/ or elderly parents. Some have now passed on, and others are being cared for at the Raglan Hospital and Rest home. Most are now widows and support each other, and share stories of life in Raglan latter half of the last Century. Last Month the guest speaker was Lisa Thompson who was born in Raglan and she enlightened the members on the progress made by Raglan Naturally over the last 12 months. There were lively discussions on issues such as, sewerage, parking, freedom campers, transport, Raglans’ tourist industry, health and housing. With a higher life expectancy in the future especially for women, meeting the needs of the rapidly growing elderly population in small rural towns is a major problem. Lisa’s
