Ground-breaking Raglan professor dies aged 87
by Edith Symes
Three generations: Emeritus Professor Jane Ritchie OBE with her daughter, Dr Jenny Ritchie (right) and grand-daughter, Dr Isa Ritchie, at Isa's graduation day
Whaingaroa has lost a longtime identity and pioneering academic with the death at 87 last week of Professor Jane Ritchie.
Not only was Professor Ritchie the first woman to graduate with a PhD in psychology from a New Zealand university, but under her leadership Waikato became the first university in the country to offer a course on women and psychology.
The ground-breaking course drew many women in particular to the campus and she was to teach it for 35 years, as well as programmes on violence in family and society.
Even before that, Jane and her husband James – also a top academic at Waikato University – were busy establishing themselves out at Whale Bay, where they’d successfully bid on a section and set up what was to become the family bach in a Skyline garage they called ‘The Shack’. This was the 60s, a time when there was still a long and winding dirt road between Raglan and Hamilton, and they were two esteemed professors embarking on a new lifestyle for themselves and their five children.
University-based academics Pearl and Ernest Beaglehole – told the Chronicle some years
back of how she remembered washing her babies’ nappies by hand and getting milk for their bottles from the nearby Calverts’ farm, keeping it fresh in chilly bins with ice packs.
Meantime the couple went on to become prominent child-rearing experts, their 1981 book ‘Spare the Rod’ damning physical discipline in favour of the positive reinforcement now widely accepted in society.
They also formed strong links with Maori early in their careers, and Jane’s postdoctoral work on preschool education for tamariki Maori contributed to the development of kohanga reo.
James at the time headed Waikato University’s psychology department which he’d earlier established.
The Ritchies finally moved permanently from Hillcrest to Whale Bay in 1990, building two homes amid the native bush overlooking Indicators – a place to which some of their grandchildren have since gravitated and remain to this day.
local second-hand bookshop. She became a marriage celebrant, conducting ceremonies around the district and beyond. She was also a Justice of the Peace.
Grand-daughter Isa recalled this week that Jane enjoyed this “service to the community”, and also how she was often surrounded by family during her final years at Raglan West, having settled into a home nearer to town.
“Her daughter Helen in particular (who lives just beyond Whale Bay) played a large role in supporting her during her final years, as did her sister Ruth, who on many visits from Los Angeles would ensure Jane’s needs for care were sorted.”
Isa has had a close relationship with her grandmother, continuing that proud academic legacy by also graduating – in 2017 – with a PhD from Waikato University. Said an 82-year-old Jane at the time: “As Isa worked through her doctorate I enjoyed hearing her talk about her research and writing, and I couldn’t help comparing it with my PhD done back in the 1950s.”
In turn Isa – now also a published author –credits her grandmother as having been a big influence on her writing. A voracious reader, the octogenarian “always gave us lots of books to read over the years”, Isa recalled.
Isa’s mother Jenny, the oldest of Jane and James’ children, is herself also a prominent academic and currently an associate professor at Victoria University’s School of Education.
Professor Jane Ritchie was lauded this week by Waikato University vice-chancellor Neil Quigley as having served many organisations relevant to her role as both a mother and a researcher. In 1989 she was awarded an OBE, and in 1993 was recognised by the New Zealand Psychological Society as a Pioneer Woman in Psychology in New Zealand. In acknowledgement of her contribution to the university and wider community, Jane was conferred the title of Emeritus Professor in 2010.
A service honouring Jane was held at the university’s Lady Goodfellow Chapel last Monday.

ANZAC Speech
by Emma Higgins - Raglan Area School Head Student
families, and by standing up for the freedoms and rights which they fought to protect.
To uphold these values you don’t need to do something big - it’s actually the small acts where we can incorporate these values into our everyday lives. You can display courage by putting yourself out of your comfort zone. You can sacrifice time towards something you're passionate about, such as coaching a local sports team, or volunteering at the RAS Feed the Kids programme. Finally, you can demonstrate bravery by standing up for someone who has been treated unfairly, or by remaining perseverant when times get difficult. Today, we remember this ANZAC spirit, and what it means for us - courage, bravery and sacrifice - a spirit that has been passed down through generations and continues to inspire us to this day.
Now, I am sure that many of us here today have a connection to someone who has been involved in conflict; these are the many stories that we should share with one another, and take the time to listen to, in order to commemorate their experiences, and keep their valuable memory alive. Today, I would like to honour and share the memory of somebody, who truly embodied the core principles of the ANZAC spirit; is an inspiration for myself, and everybody in his life: my great great grandfatherWilliam Henry Smith.
ANZAC Speech
by Luke Dymond - Raglan Area School Head Student
The Gallipoli landing was a highly ambitious military operation, however, the campaign quickly turned into a brutal and costly stalemate, with both sides suffering heavy casualties.
Despite the initial setback, the ANZACs displayed tremendous courage, determination, and resilience in the face of fierce resistance from the Turkish defenders. Their bravery and sacrifice have become a symbol of the ANZAC spirit.
Today, we acknowledge the hardships and challenges that all soldiers face, from the trenches of World War I to the deserts of Afghanistan. We pay tribute to those who make the ultimate sacrifice, and to those who return home with physical and emotional scars that last a lifetime.

Kia ora everybody. Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who was able to make it here today to commemorate this significant day in New Zealand’s history. I would also like to highlighthow despite living in these very uncertain times - I am grateful that we have the opportunity to gather like this as a community, and I appreciate all of the effort that everyone has put in to make this day possible.
Today marks the one hundred and seventh anniversary of the New Zealand and Australian Army Corps - the ANZACs - who marched onto the shores of the Dardanelles Peninsula in Gallipoli, on this day, 108 years ago. We come together on this day to remember, and pay tribute to the courage and bravery of those that served during the Gallipoli campaign, and to commemorate every New Zealand and Australian serviceperson who has been involved in other conflicts around the world.
ANZAC Day is a time to reflect on the values these soldiers held dear. Courage, bravery, and sacrifice were the hallmarks of their service, and their compelling demonstration of the ANZAC spirit remains an inspiration to us today. Now, these admirable qualities are not unique to the soldiers of the ANZACs, but they have grown to become synonymous with our national identity. We can honour their memory by continuing to uphold the values for which they fought. We can honour their sacrifice by working towards a more peaceful world in the future. We can honour their legacy by supporting our veterans and their
My great great grandfather served in the First World War from 1915 to 1919 when he was roughly 22 years old. From a young perspective, I can really sympathise with the experiences of William and the soldiers his age: all of a sudden having to pack their bags, travel overseas, and part with their friends and family. In the name of their country, this is what he - and thousands of others at his age - had to do, while only just beginning to find their way in life as an adult. As a 22 year old, my great great grandfather served in the armed forces as a stretcher bearer, and during this time, he risked his life retrieving wounded or deceased soldiers, while possibly being under fire himself. Following this, on his return home, he arrived with 3 war medals… one of which being awarded for Bravery in the Field.
His story is only one of many. Today, we remember the thousands of New Zealanders and Australians who travelled to Gallipoli, and all share unique, yet similar stories and experiences. We also remember the families of those who served, the wives, husbands, children, parents, and siblings who waited anxiously for news of their loved ones. We recognise their sacrifice, and we honour their strength and resilience.
ANZAC Day, however, is not just about remembering the past. It's also about looking to the future. It's about asking ourselves what kind of nation we want to build; how we can honour the legacy of those who fought for the freedoms we have today.
So, on this ANZAC Day, let us remember the sacrifices of those who have gone before us, and let us honour their legacy by living up to the values they held dear. Let us strive for a better future, one where we uphold the principles of courage, loyalty, and sacrifice. Let us never forget the debt we owe to those who gave their lives for our freedom. Let us continue to proudly wear our poppies as a symbol of remembrance, and celebration of the ANZAC spirit.
Lest we forget. Nga mihi, thank you.
Today, we gather to honour and remember the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country in times of conflict and war. We are gathered here on Bow St this Tuesday morning. As the sun shines down upon us, it reminds me of how lucky I am to be here in Raglan: the beaches, the beautiful sunrises with their equally stunning sunsets, and the community that surrounds us. It’s a way of life unique to Raglan that we are lucky to be a part of.
ANZAC Day is a time for us to reflect on this legacy left by those who have gone before us; to pay our respects to those who have given their lives for our freedom and our easy way of life here in Whaingaroa. It is a day of remembrance, a day to acknowledge the hardships and challenges that soldiers faced, and to honor the spirit of the ANZACs - the courage, mateship, and sacrifice that have come to define the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.
On the 25th of April, 108 years ago, Australian and New Zealand soldiers, along with British and French allies, landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in what is now modern-day Turkey. This landing was the beginning of the ANZACs involvement in World War I and is a defining moment in Australian and New Zealand history.
I would also like to take the time to share some stories from my family during wartime, starting with my great great grandfather, William Hosking, a father of two and an enlisted soldier at 18 years old. In WWI, he and his brother, Johnny Hosking, both served in Egypt for the British army. Early on, Johnny was left with a permanent leg injury and was forced to withdraw. William, on the other hand, served as a medic, and he too was injured by shrapnel and was forced to withdraw whilst performing medical duties on the frontlines. He was awarded several medals. William continued to serve in Search and Rescue in Swansea during World War II despite being unable to rejoin the military due to his injuries because Swansea was a frequent target. He was typically sent out after bombing runs on the city. His daughter, my great grandmother, with her sister were sent away to the country due to Swansea being such a frequent target, meaning that William served in the devastated city he called home despite his physical disabilities and being separated from his family.
The other member of my family I would like to talk about is my great grandfather John Billington, who served during WW2 in the RAF as a messenger, as at the time of his enlistment he was too young to be a soldier. He was sent on missions all across Europe, delivering messages from the frontlines to officers and high ranking officials further inland. The two main areas he served in were Belgium and France.
ANZAC Day, however, is not just about remembering the past. It is also a day to celebrate the spirit of the ANZACs - the courage, mateship, and sacrifice that have come to define us as a nation. It is a spirit that is embodied by our servicemen and women, who continue to serve our country with distinction and honor.
ANZAC Day serves as a poignant reminder that freedom is not free and comes at a great cost. It is vital that we remember and honour the legacy of the ANZACs, and continue to uphold the values of courage, resilience, and sacrifice in our daily lives. As we gather here today, let us remember those who have served and continue to serve, and let us pay tribute to the sacrifices made by our ANZACs. “Lest we forget." Thank you.

Trade Aid Good Egg makes a difference
by Janine Jackson
Raglan’s known for its communityminded folk and a campaign saw around 30 well-deserving volunteers nominated in the Trade Aid Good Egg competition.
Shop manager Eloise Deller says Good Egg Angela Massey came through in the end with two nominations from Larissa Grandi and Donna Mataire.
“Trade Aid is all about promoting and supporting the unsung and often undervalued work of the small food and craft producers around the world. It's lovely to be able to run a campaign that highlights people in our community who do good. We wouldn’t be able to run the shop without our own team of volunteers so we know just how important the people are who give their time to help others.”
People just like Angela who can be found at Feed the Kids at Raglan Area School every Wednesday community-run initiative that provides a milo and toast for students at the school – no questions asked.
She’s also does paid work at the school supporting children with special needs but this work continues in her own time as she takes these kids under her wing, sometimes long after they have left school.
Organising the Christmas presents for whānau going through hard times for the Raglan Community House is also something on Angela’s portfolio of good deeds.
And there’s more, including raffle fundraising throughout the year for school activities.
Larissa reckons Angela goes above and beyond the call of duty.
“I feel like she's everywhere, trying to help out people who need things, especially the kiddies” she says.
Angela says she’s just one of many good eggs in Raglan doing their bit for the community.
“I saw the promotion online and meant to come down to nominate someone.”
But for now, Angela is happy to take the monster egg, made from 55% Trade Aid chocolate but you can be sure she will be sharing it with Feed the Kids students. Angela
Local collective launched to support youth in Raglan
by Maki Nishiyama
Inlate 2022, a group of likeminded community members came together to launch the Whāingaroa Youthworker Collective – Ngā Whakaruruhau Mahuri.
Spearheaded by Joseph Rao (ex Raglan Area School teacher), Mike Rarere (Raglan Community House) and Gabrielle Parson (Raglan Naturally), the collective have been meeting regularly with other locals that are passionate about supporting youth in our community.
“We as the adults are like the trees that create shelter for young saplings - our rangatahi- to grow,” said Joe Rao, referring to the meaning behind the name gifted to the collective by kaumatua Sean Ellison: Ngā Whakaruruhau Mahuri.
The collective initially met to counteract negative media representations around youth that were being depicted on the news at the time and are keen to celebrate youth
successes and create space for young people to feel supported in Whāingaroa.
Having kicked off a series of summer events in November last year, bringing youth together for fun activities at the beach, the group are looking to create more opportunities and initiatives for young people.
They say ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ and the youthworker collective’s approach is the same, aiming to connect youth with mentors in our community to share knowledge, skills and resources to build resilience. They also hope to have a specific space/hub for youth one day - a place where they can come together and connect.
Support has been wide-ranging and has come from all corners of the community, including involvement from Brenden de Ruysscher, Deilyn Tukiri, Sean Dillon, Raglan Area School, Raglan Naturally, Poutama Rites of Passage, and Raewyn from the Police as well as Brian Ruawai and Naomi Tuao from Soundsplash, Margaret Dillon from Feed the Kids, Teresa Morgan
from Raglan Medical and Kelly Woolston from Whaikaha.
The collective agrees that, “We don’t want to be the adults telling youth what to do - we want to hear from youth what they want to see,” emphasising the importance of listening to the younger generation when it comes to seeing their point of view.
In New Zealand,12 to 24 years is the generally accepted age range for defining ‘youth’ or ‘young people’ and the collective have shoulder-tapped a number of ‘younger’ community members to drive the connection with youth in Whāingaroa.
When the Chronicle attended Whāingaroa Youthworker Collective – Ngā Whakaruruhau Mahuri’s latest meeting last week, collective members discussed their aspirations for the future of the collective, like funding a paid youth coordinator role to drive youth initiatives in Raglan.
Volunteers from the Raglan Community Patrol were also in attendance to explain their process to become a volunteer. They
gave a report on what they were seeing on their patrols and an overview of their role as the ‘eyes and ears’ of local police.
With the school holidays coming to an end last week, the collective held a fun Youth Session in the Town Hall to cap off the weekend with pool tables, games and snacks - organised by Jessica Hill from Dreamview Farm. The youth events so far have been made possible through funding from Raglan Lions, Waikato District Council and Len Reynolds Trust.
The Youthworker Collective meets every 4-6 weeks and provides a space for ideas and concerns to be shared and supported, and projects to be activated.
If you are keen to find out more, support, or get involved with the Whāingaroa Youthworker Collective – Ngā Whakaruruhau Mahuri, contact Gabrielle: info@raglannaturally.co.nz.

Four into one as town’s crafters showcase skills
by Edith Symes
Acolourful display of quilts and knits, traditional hardanger embroidery, paintings, fabric and paper art filled Raglan town hall’s supper room last Saturday as the town’s four crafting groups combined for the first time in an exhibition of their talents.
Organiser Sue Webber told the Chronicle it was such a great day that “we’re already talking bigger and better,” indicating that the next Raglan Crafters Showcase might well fill the whole of the town hall space.
On arriving in Raglan three years ago Sue first joined the long-running daytime knitting circle, then – seeing a need for those who work during the day – started up a crafters and hobby group which meets in the evening.
Two years on, after beginning with a dozen or so members online, Raglan Crafters Group now has no fewer than 288 keen and crafty people sharing ideas.
Add in the Raglan Art Group and Karioi Quilts & Crafts, which have both worked from the Old School Arts Centre for decades, and there’s a flourishing creative community across the various crafts.
Over the years these crafters have stitched up quite a storm, donating the likes of patchwork rugs to the local rest home and – most recently – knitting and crocheting beanies, 50 of which were recently donated to the flood-devastated families of Wairoa.
There’s also been a combined community effort to craft poppies for this week’s Anzac Day commemorations. Two of the many poppies made will end up across the other side of the world when one local takes them to Turkey at Christmas-time in remembrance of family members who fought at Gallipoli during the First World War.
Meanwhile coming up once again in June there’s a ‘World Wide Knit in Public Day’ where local crafters will get to yarn from the veranda of the Harbour View Hotel, demonstrating that these old-fashioned handicrafts have made quite a comeback.
*Raglan Knitting Circle meets every Wednesday at Orca from 9am.
Raglan Crafters Group meets the 2nd and 4th Mondays every month at Orca from 6pm.
Karioi Quilts & Crafts meets the 2nd Thursday of every month at the Old School from 10am.
Raglan Art Group meets Feb-Nov the 1st Friday of the month at the Old School from 10am.
New Zealand Surfing Team returns to El Salvador from
Surfing New Zealand
An all-star team of New Zealand surfers has qualified for the 2023 Surf City El Salvador ISA World Surfing Games being held this May. The pinnacle event is the second Olympic qualifying opportunity for our top surfers with two places at Paris 2024 up for grabs for the top ranked surfers from the Oceania Region.
The New Zealand Surfing team will compete at the event from May the 30th to June 7th, in Surf City, El Salvador at the world-renowned breaks of El Sunzal and La Bocana.
Billy Stairmand (Rag), Kehu Butler (Mnt) and Dune Kennings (Piha) will represent New Zealand in the Men’s Division. Billy and Kehu gained entry through 2022 World Surf League (WSL) Challenger Series and Dune Kennings through his win at the 2023 National Surfing Championships held at Piha in January.
Paige Hareb (Tara), Saffi Vette (Gis) and Pia Rogers (WGM) will represent New Zealand in the Women’s Division. Hareb qualifies via the WSL Challenger Series like Stairmand and Butler with Vette via the 2023 WSL Australia/Oceania Qualifying Series
and Rogers through her title at the National Championships in January.
Billy Stairmand follows on from his successful QS campaign in Australia this summer where he placed 6th overall in the Australia/Oceania rankings. He is looking forward to his busy schedule of upcoming events. “I’m really looking forward to the next couple of months. First the Challengers in Australia and then off to El Salvador for the World Surfing Games. I’m super motivated this year and feeling fit and healthy”.
On his qualification for the New Zealand team
“To be selected for the Worlds is amazing. You are representing New Zealand in a different way, and I can’t wait. This event has a lot more of a team vibe, it’s fun. But at the same time, I’ve got my own personal goals I want to tick off. I’m ready to really knuckle down and put my best foot forward; bring it on”.
Over 50 countries and 250 athletes will participate at the event. Four continents will qualify surfers for Paris 2024 with the surfing at the event being held at Teahupo’o, Tahiti.
The most recent World Surf Games event was held in Huntington Beach, USA where a six-strong team of Kiwis attended and placed 19th in the world. New Zealand has been attending the ISA World Surfing Games since the 60s and continues to do so this year with the team travelling to El Salvador for one of the most important events of the year.

The team at Raglan Anexa are no strangers to the wandering dogs and stray cats of Raglan. We are the local drop-in centre for all the fur babies who have become lost or taken themselves on an adventure.
Often, we are able to reunite animals with their owners thanks to their microchip, collars and tags but sometimes we cannot due to no identification.
Microchipping is a permanent, easy, safe, affordable and effective solution to keep your pets safe if they are lost, stolen or injured and get handed into a vet clinic or animal shelter.
Scanning the chip easily identifies them if they are registered with your local vet, a council database or the New Zealand Companion Animal Registry and ensures a quick reunion with their family.
The Stray Animal Wildlife Fund is currently in conjunction with the team at Integrate environmental - Integrate environmental are operating a trapping program in Raglan for stray and feral cats. All cats are brought into the clinic for a health assessment, temperament assessments and scanned for microchip identification. Microchipped cats are instantly returned to their owners while the unchipped are listed on The Stray Animal Welfare Fund Facebook page in hopes to find an owner. After 7 days if no owner comes forward the cats are advertised for adoption. Unfortunately, some cats are humanely euthanised as they are unable to be rehabilitated. We strongly recommend pets to be microchipped and the microchip number added to your local veterinary clinic and, if you are able, register with the New Zealand Companion Animal Registry; the registration fee costs $20 on top of your microchip implantation fee.
Keep your pets safe, microchip them today.

Science Night #17
6-7pm
Wednesday 3 may 2023
Harbour View Hotel
Awareness of the need to recover and re-use has been lost as the world economy has grown, and single-use disposable items now reign supreme in our everyday lives.
There is increasing recognition of the need for responsible and efficient reuse of finite resources, and the potential overall benefit to society is immense.
This has led to growing public awareness of the need to rethink our whole approach to how we use the resources available to us and how we should be better custodians of our planet.
Join us to hear a short presentation by Rick Thorpe as he explains what a circular economy looks like in Whāingaroa, who is already initiating circular economies in our community and the exciting new circular economy initiatives that are being introduced to our community this year. Rick Thorpe is one of the Founders of Xtreme Zero Waste community enterprise based in Raglan. He has recently resigned from being a Manager at Xtreme for the last 22 years.
Rick is a Founder Trustee for the Zero Waste Network and has been on the Board for the last 17 years or so. Rick has held numerous other positions with Te Mauri Tau, Pacific Vision Aotearoa and Waiuku Zero Waste. He has been involved in numerous zero waste projects such as Great Barrier Island, Chatham Islands, Auckland Inorganic Recovery Programme, postearthquake Kaikōura and New Plymouth Resource Recovery Centre design. Rick has worked as a consultant on waste projects through Xtreme Zero Waste, Zero Waste Network and Envision. He is currently an independent advisor to Auckland Council around community resource recovery. Rick has been on numerous national working parties and sector groups including current participation in WasteMINZ Resource Recovery Sector Group.
This is a FREE event held in the front bar. All are welcome! Arrive early if you want to order dinner, a drink and snag a good table. Science Night commences at 6pm. Nau mai, haere mai!
Xtreme Zero Waste was founded by families and community members who wanted to clean up the harbour, turn the negatives of "waste' into many positives for our community like employment, sharing resources around and to provide ways for Raglan residents to put less in the ground. This was the start of our reuse shop, and recycling services. We still exist today for this purpose and we invite everyone in Raglan to make the most of our site and services to save themselves some $$ and save space in landfill too.
Reconsider the R words: Rethink our choices of what we buy, can we get it locally, second hand and without packaging first? Reduce what we buy that comes wrapped in landfill. Choose Reuse-ables over single use, donating and buying second hand is great reuse too! Repair broken things, or get them to local creatives for a jazz up and repurpose. Of course Recycle what we can at kerbside, rural depots and up on site. Let's try all these before we put things in landfill.
The Whāingaroa Tool Library is an inclusive lending library for tools of all sorts ranging from electric gardening and building equipment through to sewing machines and a Weber BBQ. We help the environment – by preventing single-use tool purchases, stopping tools rusting in garages and by purchasing high quality tools that have a longer life thereby reducing unnecessary consumption. We also help the community, by giving our members equality of access to great tools, saving them money, and empowering people to build, share and create in a more sustainable way.
Raglan Tool Library open hours are: 11am - 2pm

A message from Raglan Junior Rugby's Jacqui Smith
Irememberas a child, my Dad taking me to the rugby club so we could watch my cousin James Sweetman play. Everyone was there and a pride in our community was written all over their faces. I feel privileged that my kids get to play for that same club years later and they, like many others, are proud to represent their community.
I would like to start the new season with firstly giving my appreciation. I would like to acknowledge all the people that have stepped up over the years to keep our club running. I would like to say a massive thank you to the businesses that sponsor us, to all the Managers and Coaches who have put their hands up to run a team, and to the committee members who keep the cogs turning. Our kids get to play for our community because you all chip in. Thank you!! Your generosity keeps our club ticking along.
I am very excited to let you know our rugby kids will be playing in new jerseys this season! Thanks to the efforts from Karyn, Rach and Dan and the generosity from Direct Tech, Alpha Interiors, Property Brokers, J & P Fagan Contracting, Wally Smiths, MD Builders, Rural Safe, Fensin LTD, Raglan Glass, Kre8ive Construction and Fence it Munnsy.
Thank you to Property Brokers, who will be running a fundraising BBQ at our home game day with all profits heading back to the club.
Thank you to Raglan Surf Emporium and Raglan Sign Company for helping us out with team hoodies and leaver hoodies. The kids are so proud to wear these.
Also a huge shout out to Raglan Bakery for continuing our player of the day sponsorship. Please don’t hesitate to show your appreciation to these people for what they do for our rugby Tamariki. If you have interest in sponsoring our club or a team please get in touch.
Update from Raglan Football Club
by Katie Lowes
Withthanks to the epic crew that came to the Muster/Kit Bag Check at Te Kopua on 15th April.
We appreciate it was mid-holidays; no hard feelings for those of you out of town on trails and adventures. But for those that came to represent their team/club we got so much organised, lines drawn, bags ready, teams organised, and for the newbies - some initial meet and greets!
The Muster/Kit Bag Check happened to fall on the nationwide ‘micro volunteering day’ so double points for all of you.
We want to say the greatest thanks to Luca Grilli for being an exceptional long-standing champion President. And welcome John Brzeski the new President. The old and new committee have been working in tandem the last year (there is a lot to learn!) and we hope that Luca loves his new role as BBQ Liaison, if the hat fits.
Kia Ora and welcome to Soccer 2023 - it’s an amazing return to sport for our small town (and the world) after a testing few years of social distancing. Keep your eyes out for FIFA in Hamilton, let’s make this season a tremendous one!
The kids are very excited for the rugby season to start. We have made the teams and are just waiting for the draws to be finalized now. Our first training will be at 4pm on Thursday the 4th of May, with the first game
on the 13th of May and last on the 26th of August.
We are locked, loaded and ready to get the ball rolling.
Thanks for your time RJRC Jacqui - out
Division One, here we come!
by Pete Aim
It’staken four years but the Raglan Golf Club Pennants team has finally made it to Division One, by winning the Waikato wide Pennants Division Two Competition, last Saturday at the picturesque Raglan Golf Course.
Having started at Division Four, four years ago, the team of Scott Claver, Aaron Brown, Ken Shea, Steve Hall, Luke Phillips and Jordan Holmes has made inroads into achieving Division One status for the 2024 Pennants Competition. To reach this status the team needed to play eight rounds plus a semi-final and a final.
"This is the first time in the history of the Raglan Club that we have a team playing Division One golf. It’s a huge privilege to represent the club at this level. Division One
has been the domain of the bigger Waikato Clubs, so this achievement means we have really put Raglan Golf Club on the map”, enthused a very proud Steve Hall.
Team tactics played a big part in the team’s success with members playing for the team and not the individual. Playing orders were also changed to suit how well individuals were playing. Supporting each other also really paid dividends!
"Club support on Saturday was outstanding”, quipped Steve,” with over 70 family members, cheering and supporting us on to the finish line."
Division One in 2024 will mean raising levels to a new height and playing against top ranked golfers, but that is what golf is all about- meeting these challenges.
Congratulations team and all the best for 2024. Off the tee....Pete Aim.

A liberator brings changes in behaviours and thinking; the posters celebrate a person, real or mythical, who achieved this. The stories are told in three languages: Spanish, Xavier’s first language; Maori, the language of some of the artists and/or their subjects, and in English.
The continued growth in the use of Te Reo by all New Zealanders makes this a good time to take another look at this exhibition. Work done through the Treaty of Waitangi settlement processes has made the history of some colonial injustices more visible.
Please RSVP to Kaz Willoughby at info@raglanmuseum.co.nz if you will be attending the opening.
Meet our fun, caring and inspirational team ! This is more than just another job!
