Police are asking for any information about suspicious behaviour seen in the area indicated in the above map on the night of Saturday, February 23.

The offence happened shortly before 10pm on Saturday 23 February, in a small park at the intersection of Tahuna and Nihinihi Avenues. Police are in the early stages of the investigation and seek assistance from the public in relation to any suspicious activity or people seen in that vicinity between 9pm and 11pm. “We are continuing to make a number of enquiries but need our community to

contact us with any information," says Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greene. "We believe someone will know this man and we are keeping an open mind as to why he was in this area. "It is possible that he lives in the area or was a visitor, or he could have just been in the area after a night out. “We want to hear from anyone who saw anything, even if it was minor and we ask residents or owners of premises that have CCTV cameras to contact Police.” Please contact Hamilton Police (07) 858 6200 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Whaingaroa community throws support behind rites of passage initiative

Poutāne or male mentors exploring child and adult psychology in the outdoors.

N

o fewer than 18 men – most of them from Raglan – have put up their hands to mentor teenage boys in a fresh take later this year on a Whaingaroa rites of passage programme. All the volunteers recently completed the second of two weekend-long wānanga or training workshops to ensure they can “look after our boys” as they transition into adulthood, says Tiaki Coates who is behind the community-led programme. Tiaki is amazed at the huge response from local men to become poutāne or male mentors, supporting our youth. They will facilitate the Poutama Tāne rites of passage “journey” in the July school holidays for six to 12 teenage boys. These mentors will keep the learnings and growth of the young men going, Tiaki adds. “It’s not easy being a teenage boy … and this is about building a network of men for the boys to turn to when the going gets tough.” Tiaki says he’s seen the power of mentorship during a pilot Poutama Tāne journey in 2016 supported by local kaupapa-Māori organisation Te Mauri Tau. On that course the men – fathers, family members, mentors and youth workers – outnumbered the teenagers three to one. Back then they all camped together and shared stories for five days in a secret spot in Waingaro, the journey a mix of outdoor adventure and wānanga - the sharing of traditional knowledge and real life learnings between men and boys. The boys took part in the likes of hunting and river crossings during Matariki, the Māori New Year, and the wet and cold conditions they faced were all part of the challenge. Local participants like Adam Blake and son Joseph,

SUPPORT OUR SUPPORTERS!

described the pilot course as a life-changing experience. Poutama Tāne 2019 will build on that model, says Tiaki, with a focus on Kaupapa Maori, outdoor adventure and the philosophy and practice of nonviolence. “We aim to bring out the best in our teenage boys, celebrating their unique gifts, instilling a sense of belonging and inspiring a belief that they can enhance the health of their community and the wider world,” he says. The Poutama Rites of Passage (PRoP) team, whose work is funded by the J R McKenzie Trust, believes it takes a community to raise a child. “Our work will only grow if it is community-led,” stresses Tiaki, a PRoP trust board member. With this in mind PRoP is currently building relationships throughout the community, including local teachers, counsellors and Te Rōpū at Raglan Area School. Solscape eco retreat is being used as one of the training grounds, and owners Phil McCabe and Bernadette Gavin are more than happy to support the cause. Says Phil: “They are doing great work, important work in developing real world cultural grounding for young men.” Poutama Rites of Passage would like to thank its elders Sean Ellison, Rob Carter and Rick Thorpe; hosts Solscape, Whaingaroa Kohanga Reo, Waingaro Marae, Joymar and Manu Wairua Retreat; and Top Cut Butchery, The Herbal Dispensary and Four Square for their delicious donations. On the market for the first time in many years, the three-bedroom home is perched within a stone’s throw of the ocean and in the early days Colin made his way to the shore at low tide to forage for pāua and seaweed. These days he still collects seaweed for his salads but the pāua

is off the menu as it is no longer legal size. While the pāua and the Whale Bay view were the icing on the cake, it was that first approach into town with the harbour looming ahead that sold Colin on Raglan. “It was so beautiful and peaceful. Mischievious moments at bowls

All the Mischievious Maidens

O

n Thursday, February 2, 42 magnificent, mysterious maidens (most of us now ex-maidens) met at the metropolis of Raglan to match the might of many mates who mingled to attain the mighty title of Best Dressed at our annual Ladies Themed Day tournament. Obviously, the theme was the letter M. The weather was overcast and somewhat muggy but that didn’t matter to we maidens, at least we didn’t get sunburnt. Our greenkeeping team had worked well to have our grass green playable for this day, to allow us to play good competitive bowls and move majestically to the melodious music. Members joined us from Huntly, Taupiri, Bereescourt, Frankton Junction, Hamilton Cossie Club, Te Kuiti, Cambridge Central, Morrinsville, Te Awamutu, Kihikihi and our lovely Raglan ladies. Their imaginary minds managed a mix-up of characters and modelled them all day. Characters such as: Maid, Multi, Marketer, Marshall, Map, Me, Mouse Catcher, Mexican, Marathon Runner, Matting Lady, Musician, Margaret, Maori, Mamma Mia, Magician, Maud, Master Bowler, Minister, Music, Matron and Man. The winner of the best dressed outfit was Christine Finlay from Morrinsville as the ‘Mouse Catcher’. Fancy having the foresight to expect that there

L-R Jancie Hohnstone, Morrinsville, Diane Lawson Bereescourt. Ragaln Phamacy rep Bernice Richards and Brenda Waters would be some ‘mice’ around to catch ! Second was Pat Liddle from Hamilton Cossie Club as a ’Magician’. Highly commended were Yanny Split form Taupiri as ‘Music’, Merle Wyllie from Te Awamutu as ‘Matron’ and Rosalie Hart from Frankton Junction as ‘Minnie Mouse’. The six Minnie Mouses were on the lookout for Micky Mouse but he didn’t show!! Moving to the bowling side of the day, The maidens were mixed into teams of Triples without having a member of their own club in the same team. The overall winning team was Diane Lawson, Bereescourt, Janice Johnstone from Morrinsville and Brenda Waters , Raglan, with three wins + 27 points. Second were, Navenka Drnasin from Te Awamutu, Ollie Driscoll from Cambridge Central, and Judy Swetman, from Hamilton Cossie Club with 3 wins and + 26 points.

In third place were Maureen (Maws) Wahanga from Raglan, Ski McLeish from Te Awamutu and Beryl Jamieson-Corbett from Frankton Junction, with two and a hlf wins. Congratulations all. Mention must be made of our mighty sponsors, Raglan Pharmacy, who have so generously supported us over the years. Bernice Richards was their reprentative who presented the prizes. This year we were joined by Angela Massey, our Nutrimetics lady and we look forward to another great year. Thank you so much We mustn’t forget our Masterchef Men and Lady in the kitchen, who managed the menu magically and meaningfully to make us content to wind up the day and head home. Next year’s theme letter was drawn from the pack and it is the letter N. The mind boggles. Eileen Stephens

ix champions were crowned at the third and final event of the Billabong Grom Series presented by Oceanbridge event completed at Piha Beach, Auckland over the weekend. Titles went to Piha, Raglan, Christchurch and Mount Maunganui with Caleb Cutmore (Rag) and Gabrielle Paul (Piha) securing the premier Under 18 titles after a summer of surfing that also saw events held at Mount Maunganui and Whangamata. Cutmore finished off the series in style with an event win, backing up his win at the first event and a fourth-place finish at the second. By the time the finals rolled around early evening, the tide had dropped and the Piha Bar was breaking providing the Raglan surfer with all too familiar lefthanders running

Jayden Willoughby // Photo CPL down the beach which suited the goofy footer. Cutmore finished with a 14.27 point heat total edging out Jack Lee (Whaka) who pushed him for the win posting 14.07 points out of a possible 20. The Piha Bar also suited Raglan duo Kora Cooper, who won the Under 16 Boys Division, and his mate Jayden Willoughby who placed second in a high scoring final. Willoughby’s runner up finish was enough for him to win the overall series. Cooper was the form surfer of the weekend and peaked in the final dropping eight-point rides at will and combo’ing his fellow finalists within the first eight minutes. He eventually finished with a 16.8 point heat total in the final. Surfing NZ

Māui Dolphin Day coming soon!

Māui Dolphin Day is just around the corner, a chance to celebrate our community, our natural environment and our neighbours - the cutest, rarest dolphins around - the Popoto / Māui dolphin. Come and share some food, play some games, listen to some great music and enjoy the wet and wild Recycled Raft Race. The event is family friendly, free, and completely not-for-profit. All stalls are raising money to support our local community organisations (if you would like to have a fundraiser stall for your organisation, get in touch with Anna at Whāingaroa Environment Centre). This year we also have special guests Lost Tribe Aotearoa headlining the stage at the end of the day. See you there!

Recycled Raft Race starts at 12.30pm

With less than a month to go before Māui Dolphin Day 2019, it’s time to start building your raft for the famous Recycled Raft Race! Here is what you need to consider whilst designing and building your raft. There are prizes for creativity as well as speed – so get your thinking hats on and see what interesting items you can upcycle into a fabulous floating vessel. · Rafts must be made of at least 80% upcycled / recycled materials – including paddles. · Rafts must be creative and fun! · Rafts must be secure – no part or parts of the raft can be left in the water. All rafts will be checked prior to the race, and will not be allowed to compete if there is a risk of polluting the harbour. · No motors! Use paddle/peddle power. · Rafts from previous years must be altered in some way to compete again this year. Alterations must be over at least 20% of the raft. · It’s not about who is over the line first, it’s about having fun and getting creative! · If you are given a number flag, this must be visible at all times. · HAVE FUN!!!! Get up to Xtreme Zero Waste and see what you can find that might float. Let the shop know that you are building a raft to get a discount on materials. Registration forms are available from Whāingaroa Environment Centre and Xtreme Zero Waste. Remember to register your raft before the day as there is a limit to how many rafts we can have in the water! If getting wet isn’t your thing, come along to watch the fun!

Working together to save Māui dolphins

The most important thing that we can all do is become informed in issues related to the marine environment and stay engaged in government decisions. Every five years the government reviews the Māui dolphin Threat Management Plan (TMP) and this year you can have your say on what this plan should include. The TMP aims to ensure that the long-term viability of Māui dolphins is not threatened by human activities; and to further reduce impacts of these activities. This Autumn the Marine Matters project coordinator Gemma will be working alongside DOC to coordinate public consultation here in Raglan. We also need beachgoers and boaties to report sightings so more can be understood about their range. If you think you have spotted a Māui dolphin, call 0800 DOC HOT. Thanks to local EnviroMatters sponsors:

This is one of the last vacant sections remaining in the popular Waikowhai subdivision & the only one currently for sale. Set elevated with all services available for easy connection you can immediately start to plan your dream home or beach bach build here to take in the views of the Raglan harbour & countryside to the north and east. With a total area of 690m2, it’s a good sized site & has very reasonable covenants which allow for a quality neighbourhood. 16a Puka Place is located at the end of a cul-del-sac with little traffic activity, peace & quiet. A geotech report is available & is a cost saving for the new owner of this section. Do not delay, call Kyle today!
