The museum’s housed in the old Ahuriri Customhouse on Custom Quay – or the Iron Pot as the spot’s best known – the same quay where a trawler once a familiar sight in Raglan waters, as a part of the Hartstone family’s fishing fleet, now often offloads her catch. It’s about two decades since the Torea ll plied Whaingaroa’s waters: Hawke’s Bay-based fishing industry identity Nino D’Esposito recalls buying both her and the Lady Ruth in the early 2000s following a Tainui subsidiary’s relatively short-lived foray into trawling out of Raglan after acquiring the Hartstone business. Nino reveals that while he on-sold the Torea ll after a few years, he turned the Lady Ruth into a longliner and kept her right through until last year.

Although the Lady Ruth’s now gone to Picton, where Nino understands she’s longlining and trolling for tuna, the Torea ll’s still trawling out of Napier. The 58-footer has been owned by Star Fish Supply since 2012 and is predominantly fishing inshore species. Forrest Brown, who’s skippered the Torea ll for about a year now, describes her as an “awesome” vessel. “It’s a great sea boat that punches well above its weight,” he says. Brendan Payne, a crew member for the past five years, also can’t fault the vessel. He describes the Torea ll as “a little machine, like a hotrod” following an entire refit in which she was repowered with a 600hp marine engine. The Torea ll was easily distinguishable until recently by its bright orange colour, but has now been repainted the same blue as the rest of the Star Fish fleet. The boat typically unloads at Ahuriri on a Tuesday, after three days at sea catching mainly snapper and tarakihi.

A

ll of New Zealand moved to the red traffic light setting from 11.59pm Sunday, 23 January, to help slow and manage the spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in New Zealand. Omicron has now been confirmed in the community, with cases identified in several regions. It has not yet been confirmed in the

Waikato, however The Waikato DHB have said that they do expect cases to appear as this variant is highly transmissible. The goal at red is to slow the spread of Omicron, it is not the same as the Alert Level 4 settings we have followed previously. Businesses can open and you can do many of the things that you normally do, including visiting family and friends and

travelling across regions, but there are additional precautions and restrictions in place. During a press conference on Sunday, the Prime Minister also outlined a three stage approach that would be rolled out in coming weeks. The first stage remains the 'stamp-it-out' approach. This period represents where there are only up to 1000 cases a day. The current contact tracing and isolation measures would remain and rapid antigen testing would begin to be integrated. The second was named the 'transition stage', where there was a "much more" severe risk of Omicron. The third was where the cases were in the thousands per day. Changes would be made to contact tracing, isolation requirements and changes to contact definition. The Prime Minister said this stage would likely not be for at least a few weeks. LIFE AT RED: At Red, we need to take action to protect our vulnerable communities and our health system from COVID-19. • Red is not a lockdown, but there are restrictions to slow the spread of COVID-19. • You will always be able to access basic needs services, such as food and healthcare. • You can travel anywhere in New Zealand for any reason, and see friends and whānau. • You must wear a face covering on flights, public transport, and taxis, in retail shops and public venues, and in health and education facilities. • With My Vaccine Pass, most parts of life continue as usual. You can visit cafes and bars, attend gatherings and events, and go to the hairdresser and gym. There are capacity limits and distancing requirements at some venues. • Without My Vaccine Pass, there are restrictions. • Workplaces and schools are open. • Keep scanning QR codes and recordkeeping wherever you go. • Keep physically distanced wherever possible. • If you have cold, flu or COVID-19 symptoms, isolate immediately and call Healthline for advice.

GUIDE TO COVID 19 KOROWAI OF AROHA BEING PREPARED ‘Kia ngātai ai te tū e pakari ai te tuarā’ ‘Stand Together, Stand Strong’ Welcome to our guide for being prepared if you or someone in your whānau, tests positive for Covid-19 over the coming weeks. We want you and your whānau to be safe and well supported if you need to isolate - being prepared in advance will enable you to make good decisions. We know that Covid-19 is going to be in our community and the best way to be empowered is to prepare ourselves, our whānau and our community with tools and information that will enable us to manage if you or someone in your whānau tests positive for Covid. WHAT DOES PREPAREDNESS FOR ALL OUR COMMUNITY LOOK LIKE? Taking care of your health and the health of your whānau - these are only a starter; vaccinate, get your booster shot if you are able, exercise regularly, walk the beach, dip your toes in the water, swim, walk, laugh, enjoy the company of whānau and friends, smile, eat good kai and importantly don’t be whakamā/shy to reach out if you need awhi/ help - you are not alone. Make a Plan - Decide what happens when someone in your whare tests positive for Covid-19 and needs to isolate. • That person must self-isolate for at least 10 days after the last contact or exposure to confirmed cases or until they are told they no longer need to do so, by a public health official. • Ideally the positive person should isolate from the rest of the household. • The rest of the household will need to be tested. • If you are lucky to only have one positive person in your whare, you can prevent transmission by having only ONE person tend to the Covid-19 positive person’s needs. Include in your Plan - What happens for someone in your whare if they test positive for Covid-19. • Do you have a room in your whare where whānau can isolate themselves away from others? • If it’s not possible to set up a room, create separate zones so they’re away from shared spaces such as the lounge and kitchen • Coordinate with whānau/friends to have another whare where whānau can go to safely isolate Set the Tikanga/Guidelines - Decide on what the tikanga is for your whare so everyone understands what needs to happen if you or someone in your whare tests positive for Covid-19. • Talk with your whānau or if you live alone, speak to close friends or reach out to your neighbours, we all need to support each other • Make sure that people visiting know what to do if they are supporting you to safely isolate at home e.g text or message before they arrive, beep from the gate, stay in their car etc

• Put up a sign on your front door, set up a table outside the front door with sanitiser, a QR code or register Prepare your Whānau - Prepare a checklist and make sure whānau/friends/support people understand your planning and have a copy of your checklist. • Put your checklist on the fridge, have your whānau details; names, ages, NHI numbers, medical conditions, addictions, numbers of your doctor, emergency numbers, support agencies, just in case • If you have tamariki/children talk with them about the plan and if you get sick how they can reach out for help • Make sure to have your phone topped up with data • Make a list of household instructions that are easy to follow e.g. feeding your pets, taking them for walks, paying bills. • Nominate someone outside your whare who can help if you or your whānau are isolating for delivering kai or supplies Prepare your whare/home - Think about how to set up your whare to minimise spread. • If you don’t have enough room inside your whare, what are your options? An outside room, a caravan or tent set up and made into a comfortable space with all the necessary supplies • If whare has more than one bathroom, one should be allocated to Covid-positive people. In households with a single bathroom, surfaces should be wiped with disinfectant after every use, windows left open and fans on. Prepare your Pataka/Supplies - make sure you have plenty of kai/food in case you need to isolate at home, have enough for 14 days. • Kai, fresh fruit and vegetables • Have lots of fluid, water, broths, ice blocks, kawakawa tea etc • Baby supplies • Pet food • Hygiene products • Medical and cleaning supplies – paracetamol and ibuprofen (don’t forget children’s formulas), throat lozenges, nasal spray, mouth wash, ice blocks, electrolytes, and vapour rubs. • Sanitizer, masks • Have prepared kai like soup and stews in the freezer so it is easy to heat without a lot of preparation • Don’t neglect your mental health. Books, games, craft or DIY activities, access to the internet and streaming services can all help keep boredom at bay. It is important to be connected, make your plan with your whānau, your friends, your support people. If you are feeling unwell or have flu-like systems please get tested or call the Covid-19 Helpline to talk about how you are feeling.

Keep it clean at Papahua BY JANINE JACKSON

E

njoying the beach this summer shouldn’t come at the expense of the environment. That’s the message Xtreme Zero Waste is promoting to the local community after a spike in litter at Papahua Domain has left bins overflowing. “Anyone, at any time can practice kaitiakitanga (guardianship and protection) and pick up litter or take their rubbish home,” XZW community educator Sarah Lancaster says. Xtreme direct line manager – collections Nenya Chapman says Waikato District Council contract Xtreme to service the bins, and litter sweep the parks and reserves around Whaingaroa, and additional staff and runs are scheduled over the busy

summer months, between December and March. “The street bin collection team have been working up to 12 hours per day, 7 days a week, servicing the 120 waste and recycling bins around Whaingaroa township and litter sweeping the parks and reserves during this busy time. There is also a third sweep of Papahua at the end of each day. Waikato District Council have approved additional runs in response to the spike in refuse, and as of January 19 through to end of Waitangi weekend, XZW have scheduled three runs per day, during this period,” Nenya says. And, Nenya says, XZW is always reassessing how they operate during this busy period, including working closely with the council to replace the traditional open bins with seagull-proof bins and

provide additional bin runs during peak times. “The bins were designed by the team at Xtreme to mitigate seagull strike and there are already several bins around town, and there is a schedule in place with council to replace the old bins with the new XZW bins over time.” Born and bred Raglan local Wayne Trott and others have taken on the job of picking up litter and bagging overflowing bins around the playground. “We do a round between 7.30-9pm and many people are just packing up to go home. We’ve noticed when people see us, they start clearing up their rubbish,” he says. A keen waka ama paddler, Wayne is passionate about keeping the rubbish out of the sea.

“I’m tired of the rubbish floating around in our environment and getting into the water. People ask me - doesn’t it make you angry picking up all that rubbish, and I tell them - I feel so happy inside when I’ve finished the job.” Wayne says he has also been communicating with the council for many years about the litter problem and says the overflowing rubbish bins don’t help the council promoting Whaingaroa as a ‘jewel in the Waikato crown’. But he isn’t one to moan and not do something practical. As well as picking up litter he has also designed rubber strips for the bins to stop bird strike and, with council’s permission, has started trialling the device. “I’ve talked to the council before (about issues with bird strike), so I’m doing it myself. I saw it (the rubber strip) when I was on holiday in Australia and I thought what a great idea, the birds can’t pull the rubbish out.” Nenya says the Xtreme team is grateful for the support of the local community and believes everybody is doing their bit for the good of the environment. “We would like to give a big shout out to those residents who have been litter sweeping Papahua in the evening - thanks so much for your help. We know there are many groups and individuals who, when they see rubbish, they pick it up.” Sarah, who also heads Plastic Free Raglan, says many local businesses are also working towards reducing excess packaging where they can. “Our goal is for us all to play some role in reducing waste; that could be a business reassessing their products or individuals making plastic-free choices for their family picnics at the beach by taking a picnic hamper of reusables.” The Government’s waste strategy plan is due to be released in mid-2022 and if the new waste legislation is accepted, a bill will be introduced to parliament later in the year. The plan, which works towards a circular economy and is something XZW has been promoting from its beginnings in 2000 - includes product stewardship, diverting organic waste from landfills, fixing the damage from past disposal practices and stimulating innovation and redesign to reduce waste being generated. Some of these ideas may seem like a huge leap, but as Sarah points out, it incorporates some of waste solutions already in practice in Raglan. “Our food waste collections have diverted 677 tonnes in the past four years, that’s something Raglan should be really proud of.”

Greenlight for Whaingaroa Golf Open

W

hat a challenging year 2021 was for sporting clubs in Raglan. Amid Covid-19, it's lockdowns, changing variants and club procedures, the Raglan Golf Club has emerged stronger and more determined to provide great golfing experiences for all golfers in 2022. “We wanted to capture the Raglan essence by holding a two-day golf tournament over Anniversary Weekend, 29th and 30th January. We are expecting 80-100 golfers from all over the country. The Tournament is about fun, Manaakitanga, Aroha, whanau and friends. It's a follow up to last years tournament which was very successful,” quipped Committee Chairperson Glenn Rangitonga.

Thanks to the 4 year generous sponsorship of Cambridge Company BTW, the club will be sharing tournament profits with a community organisation.Raglan Golf Club will also be promoting Sun Smart practices, the health of participants and exercising for life. “Day One is the qualifying round for the Tainui Regional Golf Finals for the Māori Golf Nationals, so it's gratifying having that component in the tournament. We've planned well in advance and now it's time to get out there and swing the clubs!” beamed a proud Glenn. For more information go to Raglan Golf Club on Facebook. Let's do our bit to reduce and reuse, remembering our reusable cups and bags before we head out the door and choose a cone icecream over a cup? The little things all add up! We thank this community for keeping Whāingaroa beautiful and healthy, working towards zero waste.
