oes life seem a bit strange after lockdown? Does nothing seem quite the same? The Raglan community, along with many others across the world, has emerged from lockdown into a different world: we have new words in our everyday language like “social distancing and “self-quarantine; we have new practices such as wearing masks, keeping away from others and filling out contact forms in places we go. We have new rules and controls over how we live our daily lives. These changes have prompted a group of locals, Voice for Choice, to organize a post-lockdown community event this Saturday in Raglan to look

Raymond, left, and Neil are busy promoting their taxi and bus service.

R

aglan Shuttle is steering in a different direction after the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, with a new daily minibus circuit operating around town and out to the beaches in an effort to get locals on board. Rides have been free since the minibus began operating last week and they’ll remain so through until the end of the month, says Neil McLeod, who with business partner Raymond Mudekuneye only took over the business in mid-March – just before the lockdown. “We need people to support this new service, otherwise (even at $5 a ride from July) it’s not going to be sustainable,” Neil told the Chronicle. He says they’ve had to think outside the square as stringent flight restrictions have put a huge dent in the regular airport runs on which the business thrived over the five years it was in the hands of longtime locals Phil and Emily Meek. Surviving the lockdown has certainly been a challenge, Raymond admits. Neil says they kept things going – “kept sane” – by delivering groceries at the height of the crisis for Raglan Four Square supermarket,

which is just across the road from their depot. “It was more of a community service … it hardly covered the petrol costs,” says Neil, who was grateful nevertheless for the business and the chance to get to know many locals. Now the pair are not only pushing the three-hourly, seven-day-a-week circuit – with a trailer for surfboards hooked up to the minibus – but also promoting a taxi service to get the likes of restaurant-goers and Yotty revellers safely to and fro at night. “We need to be flexible (in what we do),” Neil says. But he adds they have to be conscious at the same time they need to be able to continue whatever they are now offering. Raglan Shuttle cannot simply abandon a service once some semblance of normal business resumes. He acknowledges, however, it can be a juggle. As an example he was flat tack sending drivers to and from the Yotty last Saturday night while also ferrying partygoers home from a 21st birthday shindig. That meant abandoning the Bankart St office and being at the wheel himself from 10.30pm through to around 2am.

“We coped,” he says with some relief. “We got everybody to and from their venues.” With their minibus completely taken up by the town circuit during the daytime, Neil and Raymond are thinking ahead and hope to be able to purchase another vehicle to complement their small fleet, which includes two cars and a 23-seater bus. “Raglan’s only going to get busier and busier,” says Neil. They’re talking – with clean and green in mind – about a hybrid five-seater they can use as a dedicated taxi. But with the business currently generating just 5060 percent of the expected income, they concede that at this stage it’s “hard to justify another vehicle”. Meantime the pair are preparing a survey that they hope will justify their new town-and-around daytime service. Raglan ward councillor Lisa Thomson has suggested they then put forward a proposal to Waikato District Council, to see if subsidising the service is feasible. Other ideas on the go include giving Raglan’s elderly the convenience of a weekly or monthly shopping shuttle to The Base in Te Rapa, or bringing residents from out-of-town rest homes here on sightseeing

trips that take in the Bridal Veil Falls (Wairenga) and cafes. Occasional day trips for Waikato University students to try out Raglan-based activities like surfing and rock-climbing are also on the cards, along with ski trips for locals down to the central North Island slopes. Edith Symes

Funding provides opportunity to reinvigorate Raglan’s town centre A revitalised town centre in Raglan is on the cards following a successful funding application to the Innovating Streets For People Pilot Fund.

During lockdown, Waikato District Council worked closely with Raglan Community Board and Raglan Naturally to submit a funding application for Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s pilot programme. The aim of the programme is to make it faster and easier to transition urban streets to safer and more liveable spaces for communities. Projects funded by the programme are community-led – with Council’s role being in the fields of technical advice and funding/delivery co-ordination. The team submitted an initial concept for Raglan as anecdotally it was known that the community had a history of wanting to create a space in town for the community to gather. This concept included earlier ideas that were created when Raglan Naturally was first initiated in the early 2000’s. It involves thinking around creating of shared spaces (pedestrian/cycling/vehicles) on

Bow St and a town square concept in the vicinity of the Bow St/Cliff St/Wallis St intersection. Also, since lockdown, the community has been expressing more interest in opportunities to get out of vehicles to enjoy leisure time with whanau that allows for safe walking and biking. The team were successful in attracting $270,000 from Waka Kotahi, which is topped up by $30,000 by Council. The plan from here is that the design will be finalised by the community. The layout will then be installed in a semi-permanent manner and the beauty of the fund is that it allows for creativity, it is not expensive, the changes are not permanent and it is an opportunity for community co-design. Monitoring and observations of the area and collation of feedback will be undertaken following its implementation. Should issues arise or changes need to be made to the layout it will be tweaked as necessary. This is part of the process so that it is adaptable and not fixed. If the changes are considered to be a success then they will be made permanent and if not they will be removed.

A revitalised town centre is on the cards thanks to a successful funding application to Innovating Streets For People Pilot Fund. “We’re delighted that our project has been chosen by Waka Kotahi to receive funding through the Innovating Streets Pilot Fund,” says Gabrielle Parson, Raglan Community Board Chairperson. And Raglan Ward Councillor Lisa Thomson is excited about the

opportunity to work with the people of Raglan on this project. “The Raglan Community Board is looking forward to working collaboratively with the community on this exciting project. Watch this space for more details coming soon,” she says.

SOS Garage Sale to raise funds for Old School's Covid recovery

T

he Old School Arts Centre has put a call out to the community for help with much-needed funds as they look to recover from the financial fall out of the nationwide Covid-19 Level 4 lockdown. As a non-profit organisation that primarily relies on the sale of items as well as events and workshops, the Old School was heavily impacted during the 5-week nationwide lockdown. With the loss of a significant chunk of income, they find themselves short of covering their operational costs. “Unfortunately with Covid a lot of our income avenues were essentially shut down.” Said Old School Arts Centre Manager Jacqueline Anderson. Getting stuck in, a team of volunteers has organised a SOS Garage Sale this Sunday to fundraise in order to keep the doors at the Old School open. “We will have heaps of donated goods up for sale as well as raffles for

hampers made up of items donated by local businesses.” “If you are doing an early spring clean, we’d love to have any of your unwanted items.” Said Jacqueline. The Old School Arts centre will be open from 10-am to 2pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday before the garage sale on Sunday. Drop off any items that you would like to donate to the Old School directly during their open hours. Everything from baking, plants, clothes, instruments and art will be up for grabs on Sunday, June 28, with barista Malcolm Hutt on the coffee machine. Health in your Hands

A column connecting with senior citizens in our community.

by Pauline Abrahams

Newsletter 25th June 2020

Wash Your Hands. Wash Your Hands. Wash Your Hands.

I

gnaz Semmelweis was a Hungarian physician and scientist during the 19th Century. However, he was ostracised by his superiors and ridiculed by his colleagues because he advocated handwashing and changing aprons between seeing patients. He was a brilliant surgeon but because he was Hungarian and Jewish he had difficulty in advancing his career. His stance on basic hygiene was not always popular with the medical profession at the time. He died a broken man in an asylum of the very disease he was trying to prevent. One hundred and fifty years later, Semmelweis would no doubt be pleased to know that his words were saving the lives of millions of people as the world battles a pandemic. Today there are statues all over the world celebrating the man who said three little words over and over again. Wash Your Hands. Level 1 Although Level 1 has given the elderly more freedom to interact with society we still have to be careful especially in view of the recent new cases of Covid-19. Being aware that

aging bodies are more susceptible to falls, disease, and stress we still need to be vigilant. Lifestyle choices, exercise, and a healthy diet may have given us a head start, but what we have inherited and challenges we have suffered along the path of life may have taken their toll. Sometimes a bad cold, a nasty bruise or a particularly stressful event can lead to other health problems that appear unrelated. Now is not the time to be complacent, keep moving and eat well and ask for medical help if you are in pain or unable to sleep. Seek help if you are lonely or unable to cope. Over 70 and Vulnerable. Until a few weeks ago the Raglan community was full of elderly paid workers, volunteers, busy grandmas, senior citizens helping to organize events and running social groups, and involved sporting activities. Many on the sidelines supporting teams and encouraging individuals to reach their potential. Elderly gardeners and conservationists passionate about sustainable food production and protecting the planet for future generations, supported their younger counterparts.

MOVE TO HEAL 11.30 at the Town Hall. Come Dance for Fun!

Then as the Covid Pandemic developed the older folk were told to ‘Stay at Home’ and many were reliant on the generosity of others to do their shopping. Thankfully most of the groups have now reopened and it was the highlight of the week to see the football field full of every age group enjoying the winter sun. Congratulations This week we honour one of our own Belinda Goodwin, who went beyond the call of duty during Lockdown to bring Zoom Nia Dance into the living rooms of many elderly throughout the district. The Highlight was a Teddy Bears Picnic and several older people shared their Teddies with each other via Zoom. Belinda has been awarded Volunteer of the Year by the Parkinson’s Waikato and Parkinson’s New Zealand. Well done Belinda we are so proud of you.
