Raglan Four Square has joined forces with Feed the Kids as a major sponsor, cementing their support for the local initiative.

Margaret Dillon, an ASB Good as Gold winner and community hero, has been involved with Feed the Kids since its inception several years ago. She has been instrumental in ensuring that local children in Raglan have access to a warm meal every Wednesday at Raglan Area School.

Originally starting from Margaret's home kitchen around 2017, the Feed the Kids campaign has steadily grown with the backing of the community. The program offers a range of options, including free fruit, morning tea, honey toast and milo as well as affordable options like $1 toasted sandwiches.

Organising these initiatives takes a dedicated team of volunteers and Margaret is thrilled to have Raglan Four Square jump on board to help with funding and resources.

Margaret expresses her gratitude for Raglan Four Square's sponsorship, recognising that their support will enable the programme to continue its vital work of ensuring local tamariki are fed

and nourished. With this collaboration and the collective effort of sponsors, volunteers, and the community, the Feed the Kids program in Raglan can thrive and make a positive impact on the lives of children.

Feed the Kids would like to thank the following sponsors for their contributions to the programme:

Well-used hall now has defibrillator at the ready

Users of a popular exercise venue in downtown Raglan can now breathe a little easier in the knowledge that help’s right at hand if there’s an accident or emergency.

A defibrillator that can be accessed around the clock has been installed at the entrance to St Peter’s Anglican Church Hall, which has a flow of people to-ing and fro-ing almost daily.

The hall, on Bow St, is not only used for church activities but is also the base for Freedom2Fly circus classes, and the longrunning Raglan Light Exercise Group.

Representatives of the three groups asked the Raglan Community Charitable Trust to fund and have the first aid device installed.

count”, Trust chairman Peter Storey told the Chronicle.

Peter’s installed seven or eight defibrillators at schools and other crucial spots in the district over the past few years. Each one costs the Trust about $3000, he says, and is serviced annually by Heart Saver NZ Ltd for $200.

The Trust’s other work in supporting the health and wellbeing of Raglan residents includes funding the training and annual refresher courses for PRIME practitioners, and giving grants to emergency services like the Coastguard and the Surf Life Saving Club.

“We have also funded the annual community Christmas lunches and fundraised for the New Year’s Eve

moon” at finally having a defibrillator close at hand.

Secretary/treasurer Graham Hubert says it’s reassuring for the large group of over50s, many of them now in the 75-80 age bracket and some into their 90s.

He’s proud to say the popular exercise sessions have been running continuously – bar a forced closure of several weeks because of the Covid-19 national lockdown – since starting back in 1995 under the guidance of Sport Waikato and local medical professionals.

“We have a sound health and safety policy, and maintain our equipment to a high standard,” he points out.

WTF mentors named ahead of registration deadline

from Whaingaroa Talent Factory

Music has the incredible ability to transcend boundaries and bring people together worldwide. Our vibrant town has nurtured some extraordinary talent and the organisers of Whāingaroa Talent Factory (WTF) are thrilled to uncover the next generation of musical prodigies from Raglan!

The application deadline for WTF is just around the corner, closing this Sunday. If you're a guitar virtuoso, a microphone maestro, or a deck-spinning wizard (or anything else that rocks!), make sure you sign up - you can message the WTF Facebook or Instagram pages to register.

The best part of this experience is that every performer will receive professional artist fees and invaluable feedback from experienced musician mentors to take their performances to the next level. This year we have a great lineup of local mentors including Conor McCabe, Kaea Ruawai and Joel Newport.

Conor McCabe grew up in Raglan before moving to Melbourne where he formed Fortunes with Hamiltonian Barnaby Mathews in 2015.

They produced a number of records and built a strong following over a 5 year period to rave reviews and were signed to Australian label Future Classic. Spending more time in Raglan these days Conor performs solo now as Keeper and has also been DJing around Raglan as Judy Free. Conor was one of the mentors at the first Whaingaroa Talent factory in 2020 and we’re excited that he’s back in town at just the right moment to work with this year’s crop of young talent.

Kaea Ruawai is the drumming backbone for band Masaya which she performs in along with brother Reiki, Jules Blewman (Tunes Of I) and Joe Kaptein. Having performed at a number of big-name festivals in Aotearoa (including Soundsplash ofcourse), Masaya has recently returned from an Australian tour, opening for L.A.B., and Kaea has scores of performance knowledge to share with local rangatahi.

Joel Newport is back from his duties as a mentor from last year. He has just wrapped up work for his Bachelor or Music and Performing Art at Wintec this month and has started doing the sound at Nivara Lounge in Hamilton after also doing the sound and lighting at local venue The Yard for the last couple of years.

Joel is guitarist for the band Mondogreen which he formed with local Alex Carter and 2 others from over the divvy, including drummer Connor who played in WTF20. They played at Soundsplash earlier this year, have just spent a couple of days in the studio working on their second album and are putting plans together for a tour this summer.

The mentoring sessions are a huge opportunity for young performers to get industry feedback around their performance and prepare their performance for the audience at the live showcase which is set for Saturday, July 8, 2023.

Don't miss out on this amazing chance to gain valuable experience and unleash your artistic potential. Join us at WTF 20223 and let your talent take centre stage! WTF is open to youth with any connection to Whāingaroa so if you’re from another town and want to join a band from here then get in touch to jump on board!

Whāingaroa Talent Factory is a joint project supported by Raglan Community Radio, Soundsplash, CSR Studios and Raglan Community House.

WTF EVENT Live Performance at the Raglan Town Hall - Saturday 8th July.

MENTORING SESSION - Monday 3rd July at The Yard. To enter WTF 2023 please submit this form before 5pm June 25, 2023 - https:// airtable.com/shrXhReyGCEWUbrIX

Queen Bennett and King Farr crowned at Manu Bay

from Surfing New Zealand

Animal Health Column

Prevent Lepto, vaccinate your animals

Raglan’s own Brie Bennett and Taranaki’s Daniel Farr have finished the New Zealand domestic surf season on highs claiming the Backdoor King and Queen of the Point presented by Quiksilver competed at Raglan on Sunday, June 18.

In a fast fading 1.0m swell and strong offshore winds at Manu Bay, the two surfers were crowned King and Queen of the Point early in the afternoon, coming out on top of their opponents.

Brie Bennett ran away with the final of the Open Women’s Division surfing to a 12.17 point total. Bennett was the benefactor of the best wave of the final being a 7.17 point ride that set her apart from her opponents.

“It made the win even more special going from such a bad run this season to a win at the last comp” said Bennett who had not made a heat until day one of the event this weekend.

“I lowered my expectations going into this comp so I guess the difference this weekend is that I didn’t put as much pressure on myself as I have at other comps,” she added.

Bennett knew the conditions were continually changing and set her approach to the final to match

those conditions, “Get two all right scores in the first half of the heat just in case it decided to go flat, yeah it worked,” she added.

Fellow Raglan surfer, 12-year-old Alani Morse finished the final in second place. Keeping pace with Bennett early, Morse finished with a 9.20 point heat total to beat her older opponents Gabi Paul (Piha) and the in-form Liv Haysom (Piha). Despite the two latter surfers being from Piha, both have spent considerable amounts of time at Raglan through school and university.

After an appearance at the National Championships in January, the first event of the 2023 NZ Surf Series, Farr concentrated his efforts on the Australasian Qualifying Series this summer and missed all other New Zealand events until this weekend.

The tall natural foot surfer was engaged in today’s tight low-scoring final from the outset. However, it was a two-wave combo from Caleb Cutmore (Rag) that had Farr on the back foot toward the end of the heat before Farr’s final wave which nudged him back into the lead and take the win on a low 8.40 heat total.

Caleb Cutmore was one of two local hopes in the final and held the lead for a brief period but finished second in the final, less than half a point behind Farr.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease meaning it can be transmitted to humans from infected animals. It is caused by bacteria called Leptospira. Clinical leptospirosis requires antibiotic treatment and recovery can take weeks or months depending on the severity of the disease and how quickly diagnosis and treatment commences.

It can be a very nasty debilitating illness, so prevention is much better than treatment. Currently there is no lepto vaccine for humans but there are vaccines available for several animal species including cattle, pigs, deer, sheep, and dogs. Vaccination can stop animals shedding the bacteria and reduce the chances of them spreading the infection.

How is lepto spread?

Wild animals, pets, and farm animals can all carry Leptospira. An infected animal will shed bacteria in urine (and other bodily fluids) and can pass on the infection to humans or animals who come into contact, either directly or indirectly, with the infected animal or contaminated material.

How common is leptospirosis?

Approximately 50 to 100 cases of leptospirosis are notified each year in New Zealand.

What are the signs of lepto?

The common symptoms of leptospirosis for humans include fever and chills, headaches and lethargy, aching muscles, red eyes, nausea, and vomiting. More severe symptoms of leptospirosis known as Weil’s disease affects the kidney and liver and you may have symptoms like jaundice, unexplained bleeding, meningitis and even death. Symptoms appear between 1 to 4 weeks after becoming infected and generally last for a few days to three weeks. Some people may take many months to recover.

Who is most at risk?

Anyone can be at risk of contracting lepto as wildlife carry the disease. However, people who spend significant time around animals are at greater risk, e.g., farmers, meat processing workers, vets, hunters, and people with unvaccinated pets which are exposed to high foot traffic areas such as beaches, reserves, and waterways.

How is the disease prevented?

Vaccination of all eligible animals is a great way to prevent disease both in our animals and in ourselves. Other important prevention measures include regular hand washing particularly before eating and drinking (or smoking); covering any cuts or grazes with waterproof bandages; pest and rodent control; wearing appropriate footwear and protective clothing in high-risk areas/working environments or while gardening; avoiding contact with stagnant water and flooding or other high-risk settings (your pets should also avoid these areas). You can further reduce the risk to your pets by not feeding raw offal.

Leptospirosis is such a serious disease that it is notifiable to the Medical Officer of Health at Community and Public Health.

Take care of yourself and your animals and avoid this nasty infection.

Residents get first taste of new and improved wharf

from Waikato District Council

Kaumatua Atutahi Riki of Ngaati Maahanga and Tainui led the karakia at an opening ceremony, held to celebrate the new pontoon, walkway and kayak ramp at the Raglan wharf.

Raglan residents get their first chance to test out improvements at the Whaaingaroa wharf today, including a newly constructed pontoon, kayak ramp, and eastern walkway.

These new additions to the wharf were officially opened to the community this morning in a dawn ceremony led by Kaumatua Atutahi Riki, of Ngaati Maahanga and Tainui.

Waikato District Council’s General Manager of Service Delivery Megan May says today was about celebrating the collaborative effort it’s taken to get the new additions over the line.

“Today marks the completion of the third of four projects to transform the wharf and wider harbour in Whaaingaroa.

“It is great to see the hard mahi pay off, and be another step closer to the completion of all four of these transformational projects," she says.

“We couldn’t have done it without the funding we received from Kānoa Regional Economic Development and Investment Unit, as well as our partnerships with Raglan Community Board and our Iwi partners, including Ngaati Maahanga and Ngāti Hourua, Tainui o Tainui, Ngaati Tahinga and Ngāti Tamainupō.

“These improvements were also made possible by the overwhelming support we received when we spoke to the wider community last year. We know the community have been keeping a close eye on our progress, and we’re so pleased to hand it over to them today.”

Raglan Community Board chair Dennis Amoore says the new additions set a promising standard for the upcoming western improvements.

“This is a great start in providing more room and more access for people to connect with the sea. The upcoming work on the western side of the wharf with its tidal stairs and seating will take that next step in transforming the area into a hub for the community,” he says.

Pukekohe golf visitors in Raglan

from Raglan Golf Club

Looking more like the chorus line of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, these enthusiastic Pukekohe Lady Golfers blasted onto the Raglan Golf Course recently and set the place alight.

Celebrating the end of their Pennants Golf Competition, kitted out as nuns, convicts, or golfers, these ladies kicked up a storm as they played 18 holes on the picturesque Raglan course.

Set up by Club Manager Julian Pujante, he remarked, "These ladies have a real passion for the game and are talented as well. And with positive attitudes, it was easy to host them!"

Julian has plans for a golf exchange later in the year with the Pukekohe Club.

Your visit was appreciated ladies!! off the tee.... Pete Aim.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu success in Raglan

Raglan Business Chamber

There is no doubt that the world today is digital – we can look up opening hours, buy a product or check out photos of menu items in our favorite restaurant from the comfort of our couch. We can even read our local paper on our phone. These days most businesses need at least some kind of digital presence to promote themselves and connect with customers.

When you sign up you provide a bit of information about your business through a series of questions to define your needs and then you can get access to tailored information. You work at your own pace, in your own time as it suits you.

Several times a week, a group of keen kids, men and women get together at the Kokiri stage on Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive to learn the skills of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ.)

Jiu Jitsu is a grappling-based Martial Art, suitable for all ages.Whaingaroa BJJ has regular gradings for its members and recently several members were awarded stripes on their belts to recognise their achievement.

Getting a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is not an easy journey; it requires 10 – 12 years of continual training.

However, this is exactly what one of the founding coaches has achieved. At 66 years of age, Andrew Higgins was awarded his black belt during a seminar in Cambridge in

April held by John Will, head coach of Will / Machado BJJ, based in Geelong, Australia.

What makes this event even more special is that only last year Andrew underwent surgery for bowel cancer.

Andrew has now been back training for the past 3 months and there is no holding him back. It was wonderful that 10 of the club’s members were there to witness it along with Andrew’s wife Brenda.

Two of the club’s other coaches were promoted as well: head coach Travis Brown, who runs children’s and adult’s classes, and Phil Beale who assists where and when needed, were awarded their 2nd degree black belts. New members are always welcome. Details are at www.raglanbjj.co.nz

This can be daunting to some of us –there is so much opportunity, and it can be tricky to understand what is going to give us best bang for buck and add value to our business. You can hire experts but if your business is not quite able to afford that, or you want to understand what your advisors are talking about there is a free self-directed online learning platform, packed with short videos, live events and expert advice to help you grow your business and thrive in today's fast-paced digital world.

The Government-backed “Digital Boost” Skills Training and Support programme is designed to provide small businesses with training in the benefits of becoming a digital business. It has been designed by small business – for small business. It’s free and you don’t need a NZBN to register and access the training modules and other great content.

Once you get into the system there are a few ‘beginner’ basics you can use to set you up from the very beginning. These range from creating an email address to software to protect your computer and resetting your router.

If you are comfortable with the basics there are a range of topics that you can dive into – offering information. Some courses include:

• Website work: Search Engine Optimisation, Ecommerce

• Small Business Accounting

• Digital tools on offer for your business

• How to access your business insights

• Future technologies

• Export

• Sustainable Business Practice

There is access to expert advice along the way, where you can ask specific questions. Whatever stage you are at, there are ways we can all use digital to do business smarter, and this is a great tool to get us started.

Local businesses dig deep to support Raglan Arts Weekend

from Raglan Arts Weekend

Local businesses in Raglan have really come to the fore in their support of one of the township’s most loved events, the Raglan Arts Weekend (RAW).

“Grant money is getting more difficult to attract, and so we’ve been looking at a more sustainable business model that can support all the ideas and growth we’re seeing as an event,” says Nicky Brzeska, RAW Co-ordinator since 2019.

Two long term partnerships have been set up with Rangitahi Peninsula and Bayleys Real Estate this year, to add to the support Tony Sly and other businesses in Raglan have shown since the event’s inception 13 years ago. The investment is helping the event to expand beyond the self-guided trail - and include activities for both visitors and the registered artists to enjoy.

The Bayleys Real Estate’s partnership is enabling an ‘Artist Connect’ event, a coach for the RAW 2023 artists before the weekend kicks off, allowing them to meet each other and see other art studios. It culminates in an opening cocktail/ dinner event at Rock-it, open to all, and the official start of the RAW weekend.

The Rangitahi partnership is, amongst other things, cofunding ‘The Hatch’, together with the Waikato District Council Creative Communities. ‘The Hatch’ is an Emerging Artists exhibition of 15 new artists in the Town Hall over the RAW weekend. There will be an opening night where everyone is welcome to visit and show support of the next wave of Whaingaroa art talent.

Other local businesses who have always been loyal to RAW include Palm Prints, Tony Sly, Little Hill Studios, Artists at

Work Studios & Gallery, La Petite Galerie, Rivet, Monster Gallery, Jet, Raglan Sunset Motel and Raglan Holiday Park. RAW is a ‘Creative Raglan’ event that is run by the Raglan Community Arts Council

• RAW Opening Night @ Rock-it: Thurs 19th Oct, 6.30pm to 8.30pm; tickets are $40 for a 4 course ‘walk and fork’ menu and drink upon arrival

• ‘The Hatch’ Emerging Artist Exhibition Opening @ Town Hall: Fri 20th Oct, 6.30pm; free event

• RAW Open studios self-guided art trail: Sat 21st Oct to Mon 23rd Oct, 10am to 5pm. (Both Rangitahi Peninsula and Bayleys Real Estate will have artists showcasing work in their offices).

While the factors driving the housing market activity have shifted with the seasons, there’s one thing you can count on. With a unique blend of expertise, international networks and a suite of innovative marketing tools, Bayleys is the agency for all your property needs.

Property Brokers Raglan, proud to sponsor our Community Sports Page

Property Brokers, 25 Bow Street, Raglan | 07 825 7170

A message from Raglan Junior Rugby

Ourseason has kicked off with a hiss and a roar and it’s so awesome to see the mana is strong in our whutuporo tamariki (rugby kids). Our mighty little club has the other clubs shaking in their boots. We have a reputation of being tough to beat and we are holding to it. We are so proud of all the achievements being made.

Our teams have been putting in the pukumahi (hardwork) on the field and giving it their all. The community support has been incredible, and I can’t thank everyone enough for backing our Raglan kids. They are privileged to wear their business logos like a badge of honour knowing their community believes in them. Its not just a game to these children, they are facing their fears, working as a team for a common goal, pushing through tough times and backing their mates when they are down. The life lessons for these kids are so strong in the game of rugby.

Kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui (be strong, be brave, be steadfast).

We will be holding our club day on July 1, with all teams playing at home. Thanks to Property Brokers Raglan we will have some delicious sausages for sale with all profit heading back to the club. This incredible act of generosity has blown us away.

I would like to say a huge thank you to our amazing coaches, managers and volunteers. This couldn’t happen without your help. Amazing local businesses and people

have pitched in so we can provide everything needed for our children to play and thrive. We all do our bit to build a better community for tomorrow as others have done before us and others will follow after.

Thank you to Raglan Surf Emporium and Raglan Sign Company for always stepping up for our little club.

Four Square Raglan and Raglan Rasoi have given a player of the day rugby balls for all teams.

I would like to say a big shout out to Raglan Scaffolding who has sponsored our 6th grade team, covering everything they need! Even making sure they all a Raglan junior rugby club hoodie to keep them warm and cozy on the cold mornings.

Waikato Hunting and Fishing have really come to the party. They have helped us by giving us thousands of dollars off jackets and with the help of Savvy Construction and Next Level Roofing our 12th grade team will be warm and dry this season. Not only that but thanks to the amazing people at Harbour View Hotel and Waikato Hunting and Fishing, we are able to provide club jackets for our coaches and managers. We are growing and it fills me with pride to be able to be a part of it.

You are beautiful humans and I am gobsmacked by your generosity.

Please help us by supporting our supporters. Let our children be an example of how we grow stronger as a team.

Raglan Football Club and interviews

Dylan- “Football”.

Q: Is there anything different about soccer / football this year?

Dougal- “No”.

Dylan- “It’s different to last year because last year we were winning more and last year I think we had a better team”.

Q: If there is one thing you could be better at on the pitch what would it be?

Dougal - “I need to improve my power and have a stronger kick”.

Dylan - “I do have loads of skills but I don’t have the confidence to use them. I’d like to have the confidence to use them more”

Q: What is your secret soccer skill? What sets you apart from the rest?

Dougal - “I’m okay at most positions”.

Dylan - “I’m good on all positions, dribble with the ball well and have a good power shot”.

Bowling Club update

This week we hear from Dougal Dermer McGregor and Dylan Thomas Quilter from the Morays Grade 12. This grade plays on a much bigger pitch than the younger grades, with more players and subs, and a goal-keeper.

Pictured is Dougal taking a corner. It was a great kick and our Raglan team, the Morays, were very close to scoring, but the opposition goal-keeper made his team proud when he swooped in and picked up the ball and cleared it back up the pitch. We managed to catch up with a couple of Morays’ players after the game.

Q: What do you call it? Soccer or football?

Dougal- “Soccer”.

Q: How is the team playing this year - do you have any tactics for the rest of the season?

Dougal - “We’ve been good but we just need to keep passing into space a bit more and not kicking it up the field to no one”

Dylan- “We have been doing alright as a team, but we’ve been losing lots and we need to focus on our passing and positioning”.

Q: What’s the best thing about playing for Raglan Football Club?

Dougal: “There are a lot of different age groups so you have a variety of people you can play with”.

Dylan: “Because it’s a small town club you get to play with your mates and your friends, so it’s fun.”

Wehad a really sweet moment at our bowling club AGM on Sunday 18 June. It was prize-giving and the club's coach Terry Green (left) stood up and spoke about why he chose Maureen (Maws) Wahanga.

Maws (Maureen) Wahanga has been bowling many years and while the 'Most Improved' award is often given to a new-tobowling bowler, in her case coach Terry Green recognised a consistent improvement and a great season. Maws represented Raglan Bowling Club at the Bowls Waikato centre Champ of Champ Women's singles and dispatched many more high profile bowlers to go through to the final. As runner-up in the Waikato we are all extremely proud of her.
