and Ray hopes that by coming together people interested in all areas of filmmaking can share ideas, tools of the trade, provide feedback and collaborate on projects. “This is something that can support anyone in the community with a love of filmmaking to bring their ideas and vision to the screen,” he says. Ray is certain there are plenty of film creatives who are working in isolation around Whaingaroa and he hopes the club will provide opportunities for them to be inspired and at the same time build on their skill set. “Working together on a film project can really help crystalise ideas that you don’t get without other people being involved.” A member of the Raglan Film Festival,

Ray says club members could feed into the Raglan Film Festival Awards (RAFFAs) in September and screen their short film on the big screen at the Old School theatre. “That film festival is perfect for local talent to test the waters of their filmmaking with an appreciative local audience. RAS senior production An occasional column with Aaron Mooar, Station Manager of Raglan Community Radio and the host of the Morning Show.

I

remember looking around and Croatia they spent billions of dollars rebuilding their thinking: “Why can’t things be like old town after the war there in the 90s. Dubrovnik is a world heritage site and I spent New Year’s Eve this all the time?”

Sasha Kirkwood, as Procne left, and Sequoia McCabeGavin as Philomele in the Raglan Area School senior production, Love of a Nightingale.

Sasha Kirkwood, centre, plans to seek a career in performing arts when she leaves school.

I was at the Old School market and I’d been wandering around idly chatting to people, enjoying the vibe and even taking the opportunity to talk to a few people in person instead of emailing them. I might even have bought something but that wasn’t really why I was there. It made me wish the middle of town was like this but unfortunately great asphalt gashes carve up the centre of our community. Just like most towns in New Zealand, planners seem to have given the motor car priority over everything else. I expect people won’t like me saying this because it sounds like I just want to get rid of cars and car parks - and for sure, a vision of the same town centre but with nowhere to park isn’t terribly appealing. Luckily though, that’s not the vision I want to talk about. This vision is about how it feels to be in our centre of town - I want a town centre that feels like the market, where I can walk across the roadway without having to ‘look both ways’ and can also stop any place to chat to a friend. I want the shops to be closer together so that I can get to them easily and so the streetscape doesn’t feel so windswept and empty. I want a place that feels comfortable and warm and is built to a human scale. To be fair, our town centre has some of this happening already but we could do so much better. Before cars this is what towns used to be like everywhere you went - and in fact there are still thousands of them around the world today. Their inhabitants care for them greatly and in Dubrovnik,

Community Volunteers

An occasional column featuring volunteers in our community

there in 1998. It was amazing, with people spilling out onto the street everywhere, bars and cafes open late and the locals dancing in the town square at midnight. We don’t even have a town square in Raglan but we do have some nice traffic islands - and once they closed the intersection of Bow St and Wainui Rd so people could dance in support of the 350 movement – it was awesome. We do have some places that are human scale, in the form of Volcom Lane and Electric Avenue, but it took a private developer to create them. How come we can’t do this sort of thing in our public areas? One of our regular guests on the Morning Show is Maree Haworth, a local counsellor who’s very aware of how isolated many people in our community are. She’d love to see the middle of town be a place where all people feel comfortable hanging out, and in a recent interview we singled out the curved seats on Bow St for criticism as they appear purpose-designed to make people face away from each other. Personally I don’t think the designer gave them much thought, but you get the point. We’re scared of change in Raglan because we’re worried we might lose the good stuff but if we do it right maybe we can just get rid of the stuff we don’t like and replace it with more good stuff. We just need to figure out what it is we like. The Morning Show on Raglan Community Radio can be heard from 6-10am weekdays on 98.1FM or streaming live on www.raglanradio. com

Meet the Raglan St John crew L ike all stations around the country Raglan St John is made up of a mix of paid and volunteer crew.

Station manager Bush Barton is the only fulltime paid staffer holding the fort from 8am-4.30pm Mon to Fri, and he’s backed up by a core team of volunteer emergency medical technicians (EMT) and first responders - Gord Thomas, Isaac van der Vossen, Chellé Bradley, Stacey Scott, Janice Tapp, Shelley Rikys, Louise Brown, Carol Millar and relief crew member Vic Kilpatrick – covering after hours calls. Bush is in his 17th year with St John now and like many other paid ambulance officers he started his career as a volunteer keen to help in the community. Meeting new people and making a difference in their hour of need is what drives him in this high intensity role. A qualified EMR, Bush is trained to deal with medical and traumatic events. Spending time with family and motorcycling are big on his list of things to do when he’s not busy with work. EMT Janice Tapp joined St John around 20 years ago, to look after the community attending and participating in events and was eventually talked into training as an ambulance officer. “I enjoy many aspects of St. John, mostly meeting and caring for the

4 RAGLAN Chronicle

people who need assistance and interacting with colleagues who share varied interests.” Shelley Rikys, another EMT, has worked for St John for 8 years and was inspired by her grandmother making use of her St John medical alarm to become a volunteer. “When I attended an open day, I discovered so much coverage was by volunteers and that Jan was doing a lot of single crew shifts and at night, so I decided I needed to help.” During the day she works for ASB in a training/development role with the rural team and being in Raglan means she can spend her leisure time fishing, paddle boarding, yoga and gardening. Chellé Bradley has been a volunteer at Raglan station for 3 years and holds a National Diploma in Emergency Care (EMT). She says being able to assist people when they are hurt or unwell and making a difference in people’s lives is what inspired her to join St John. “I was always interested in being an ambulance officer and I wanted to do something to help our community.” when she’s not out on calls she works at Raglan Organic Knots, creating and taking care of dreadlocks. Isaac Van Der Vossen has been with the crew for two years as a volunteer ambulance first responder. He reckons helping people and getting a smile at the end of the day is the best part of his job and would love to work for St John fulltime in the future.

The St John crew from left, Bush, Louise, Shelly, Isaac, Victoria, Gord, Chelle, Carol and Jan. “I enjoy the medical side of life but didn't want to become a doctor, so this is a better way to go.” Isaac also volunteers at the Raglan Surf Life-Saving Club and works as a merchandiser around the country.

Raglan St John is always on the lookout for new volunteers to join the team contact bushb@stjohn.org.nz to find out more. Volunteers are given full training by St John. Janine Jackson

G

raeme Mortlock has been our longtime delivery man. This week we had a quick chat to him about his history with the Chronicle. How long have you been delivering the Chronicle for Graeme? Ten years. That's a long time to be committed week after week rain hail or shine. I am so grateful for your time and effort over these years. Can you remember how the delivery position came about? Yes. I had been working delivering rural mail and was ready for a break and due to retire and I was mowing your lawns at the time and you asked me if I'd be interested in taking on the delivery. I said yes. Obviously. What do you like about the job? I like meeting people and chatting to those I know, as a person who likes dogs, its neat to see the many different types and breeds, although I've been bitten a lot, never badly though. What is tricky? Wet weather with grassy verges. Difficult for a scooter with small wheels, and have paid the price a few times and fallen off never injuring myself though dodging aforementioned dogs. You have recently had a stroke that has prevented you delivering. How long did you

spend in hospital? What kind of stroke did you experience? I had a cryptogenic stroke on the left hand side of brain, affecting the right hand side of my body. Doctors assumed it was probably the result of a recent motor I spent two weeks in hospital. Long enough! They wanted to keep me in but I was ready to come home. How have you been affected in terms of your speech and your mobility? It has really impaired my speech, enunciating especially. The words take longer to form, from initial recognition in brain to the formed word leaving my tongue. I am now just about back to normal, thankfully. How have you progressed so far? Progress was initially rapid. However it seems I have hit a plateau so things have slowed somewhat - although I haven't slipped backwards. What are the difficulties you are facing: I was not able or allowed to drive, so I had to rely on partner Brenda for a lot and I am lucky she has been here, she also got me to hospital very quickly. What is your goal with your rehabilitation? To be back somewhere close to where I was, life has changed, there is still uncertainty, I'm not sure if I will ever be the same but if this is as good as it gets well I consider myself fortunate indeed I could be a whole lot worse.

Pumped for Plastic Free July!

It’s Plastic Free July next month and now more than ever do we have the need and opportunity to get on board with living a life with less plastic. Our oceans are full with the stuff, our seabirds are too. Convenience is packaged and pretty but the goodness is pretty short lived – we should, and most of us do, know better. While a life without plastic is definitely a huge challenge for most of us, we can easily turn it into a fun adventure with the right tools and curiosity to get creative. First up, set your goal for you and your family. Whether you’re going try 100% plastic free, or maybe select 1 room in your house. Could you imagine a shower without kicking plastic bottles? YES it is possible! Or simply try taking on the big 4: Plastic Bags (old news?!), Coffee cup (we have mug libraries and locally made keep cups), Straws (go metal or use your mouth) and water bottles (get a reusable and spot the drinking fountains in town). Whatever goal you set, the best tip I have is do not quit when you get stuck. When you come up against tricky pesky plastics, don’t bail out completely. Just keep a hold of it so you know this is something to research further. Write it down or keep a box in the garage to look at on July 31. The hardest one for me? Who knew you can get loo The awesome crew that came to Sarah’s Plastic Free July Prep workshop at WEC paper wrapped in paper, delivered to your door in a cardboard box? Continuing on the adventure theme: you’ll need to map things out so getting things plastic free is easy. We are so very lucky in Raglan to have solutions everywhere around us. Get reusable containers, jars and cutlery at one of our many op shops. Dig in and grow together at the Community Gardens or join Crop Swap Purchase unwrapped meat at the Butcher or The Wharf, Paper wrapped bread from our local bakers, WOK and The Herbal Dispensary have bulk bins for homemade baking and snacks (and Binninn isn’t far) We are also very lucky to have our own local milk in glass reusable bottles! Craft up a tally chart & “do an audit” of what you find in your rubbish bin, and link these up to alternative options that are available to you. If you need some help, we’re here to take you on this fun journey with us. Be patient, things might take a little longer that you’d like - try to enjoy the process of baking muesli bars with your kids, spending time in the garden learning from your neighbour. Living plastic free you might find that you’ll save some money and make new friends along the way! For more information on Plastic free July or living plastic-free, contact WEC’s Timebank coordinator and Super Passionate Zero Waster Sarah Lancaster (timebank@whaingaroa.org.nz) or pop in to our centre for a chat & check out our new information displays.
