Te Uku locals question NZTA road safety upgrades effectiveness
Also at H.G Webb House, Cnr Boundary & Victoria Streets, Hamilton
Another car crash at Te Uku has residents questioning NZTA's safety upgrades.
T
e Uku locals are questioning the benefits of New Zealand Transport Agency safety upgrades after another accident outside the Waitomo petrol pumps. Witness to the accident’s aftermath Rata Miller says while nobody was hurt, it was only luck and timing that prevented serious injury which saw one of the vehicles end up outside Te Uku Roast Office. “People are often hanging outside, and coming and going to their cars so it was lucky no-one was caught up in the accident.”
The accident, which involved four vehicles, happened when a motorist heading to Hamilton pulled out from the Waitomo pumps and clipped another vehicle heading in the same direction. The clipped vehicle then spun around damaging a couple of trucks – one which was parked outside Te Uku Roast Office. “I’ve spoken to a couple of people and they reckon if it wasn’t for the truck parked outside the car would have ended up in the cafe,” Rata says. Locals have been campaigning for several years to improve road safety conditions and a 1000-signature strong petition was delivered to the Hamilton
NZTA office by Waikato District councillor Lisa Thomson at the end of last year. Rata says several factors impact on the safety of the stretch of highway, including speed, blind spots along the road, cars pulling in and out for petrol and coffee, and school runs to and from Te Uku School. “It’s just going to get worse with the volume of traffic increasing in Raglan.” A NZTA spokesperson says a postbudget announcement is expected from the agency in the next couple of weeks. They are also undertaking a review of speed limits in the Waikato and will be engaging with communities once the review process is completed. But Rata says the comment from NZTA is the same thing Te Uku community has been hearing for the past three years from the organisation charged with reducing the risk of deaths and serious injuries on New Zealand’s road. “I know of five accidents in Te Uku alone in the last 12 months. I’m frustrated with them (NZTA) because at some level they have to take the blame.” The lack of response by NZTA is nothing new, Rata says, he tried to engage NZTA on Twitter about an recent incident in Te Uku and was requested to message them directly. He still hasn’t heard from them. Every time there is another incident at Te Uku locals dread what they will find when they go to help. “You think this is the day when I’m going to pick up body parts,” Rata says. Janine Jackson

Regional endorsement for WRAP housing project
S
ince the inaugural housing forum in early November last year when the Whaingaroa Raglan Affordable Housing Project presented their housing research results, the group have been making steady progress behind the scenes establishing Raglan as a key focus for housing for the Waikato region. In 2018 the Waikato Plan leadership team recognized five key areas of development need for the region. The Waikato Region Housing Initiative was the result of recognition that access and affordability of housing in the region was undergoing substantial change, that demand is outstripping supply and costs
of housing to rent and purchase have risen dramatically since 2015. The housing initiative committee has very broad representation, from the Ministry for Social Development, Waikato District Council planners and policy makers, economists, development sector and philanthropic funders. The WRAP steering group were invited to represent Whaingaroa due to the profile of the research work achieved during 2018. Fiona McNabb who is the project lead for WRAP has represented the group on the committee since its inaugural meeting. Funders in the region are working closely with the housing initiative committee and have agreed that any housing related projects being considered for funding should align with the goals and purposes of the initiative. At the March 2019 meeting, the committee gave
their emphatic approval and endorsement for the WRAP project, recognizing it as an ‘excellent’ initiative which may well form the basis of an early pilot for the region. In a formal letter of endorsement, Lale Ieremia, Chairperson for the Waikato Region Housing Initiative described the WRAP project as ‘a critical community group providing high quality evidence based information to identify and quantify the range of issues associated with housing within the Whaingaroa-Raglan community.’ The letter concludes ‘The Waikato Region Housing Initiative believes WRAP is an excellent project to pilot new housing opportunities and fully support WRAP in their endeavours.’ In late March, WRAP applied for continuation funding from WEL Energy Trust to initiate a community engagement process
with the aim of establishing what the ideal housing solutions could be for Whaingaroa Raglan. The grants committee met in April and have yet to announce their decisions. In the meantime, the steering group have a workshop planned with Nic Greene CEO for Habitat for Humanity to learn from the experience of the organisation across all types of housing. Nic Greene will also instruct the group on an economic modeling tool for community housing developments developed by Habitat in 2018. Once funds are secured that allows the project to continue, WRAP will be in back with a new community engagement process to get things moving. Research results from 2018 can be found on the Waikato District Council website, search Raglan Housing St udy. WRAP

Raglan actor lands lead role in Hamilton musical
Sasha (centre) during rehearsals of 13 - The Musical, which runs at Riverlea Theatre in Hamilton until Saturday, June 1.
R
aglan actor Sasha Kirkwood couldn’t believe her luck when an audition as a cast member landed her one of the lead roles.
Playing the gullible cheerleader Charlotte, Sasha made her debut last week in Musik Maker’s production of 13 – The Musical, which runs at Riverlea Theatre in Hamilton until Saturday, June 1. “Opening night was amazing. It felt great to finally perform to an
audience who laughed and cheered all the way through and we became more confident as time went on. The whole team - cast, crew, and everyone behind the scenes - have put so much passion and effort into 13 and it felt awesome to finally show an audience what we have
been working on for the last couple of months.” The hilarious, coming-ofage musical about fitting in – and standing out, helped launch the career of Ariana Grande in her Broadway debut in 2008 when she played the very same role Sasha plays. “I feel honoured to be in it (13), I didn’t expect to get the part.” Since getting the role, the Year 12 Raglan Area School student has been travelling to Hamilton four times a week for rehearsals and says she has been loving every minute. “I’m meeting so many people I would never have met before and they are so passionate about performing. I’m so happy to be a part of it all and we have all become like family.” Sasha is no stranger to theatre, the 16-year-old drama student has been performing in school productions for a while and was part of a winning team from RAS to take out the Waikato Secondary School Theatresports competition in 2017. Not just a drama buff though, she is also an accomplished athlete and was awarded Raglan Area School’s Overall Sportsperson of the Year in 2018 for topping the
under-16 girls’ athletics, swimming, cross-country and making the Area Schools’ North Island team. “Sport has helped me with the dancing and singing. It takes a lot out of you so it helps to be fit,” she says. Theatre is Sasha’s true passion and one she hopes to make a career out of with plans to study performing arts at tertiary level. “I hope to travel once I’ve finished my studies and find more opportunities overseas.” Janine Jackson Sasha Kirkwood

ere are some tips on what you should look for in a backpack, to ensure that your children grow up with a healthy spine. This bag on Alamea in the picture above is slightly too big. It is preferable to have a backpack that sits at the base of the neck down to the top of the hips. Here are five tips for a nicely fitting backpack: According to an international study, daily backpack carrying is a frequent cause of discomfort for school children. School

backpacks were felt to be heavy by 79% of children, to cause fatigue by 65%, and to cause back pain by 46%.1 1. Style: Your child needs to like the bag you choose. If they believe the bag is ‘uncool,’ they will not use it. 2. Weight of the backpack: Ensure the bag and its contents are only 10-15% of your child’s weight. When you think about it, that’s not that much. If your child weighs 45kgs ensure their bag is no bigger than 5-6kgs. That means take out anything that is not needed that specific day at school.
3. Ensure the straps are adjustable thick and padded: Really thin straps can dig into your children’s shoulders. Backpacks with the ability to loosen and tighten the straps help you carry the bag closer to the back which will help ease stress to the spine. When looking for a backpack, S” shaped ones are easy to use and contour to your child’s body. 4. Use both straps: When I went to school, I thought it was really cool to only use one strap. However, what it does to your spine is not so cool. Ensure your children use both straps. When only one strap is used, the neck, shoulders and back have to compensate and this can eventually lead to spinal problems. 5. Customisation: Pack heavy items so they are closest to the child’s back and make sure they can’t move around. It is important to be balanced in the natural centre of gravity. Suggest that children use lockers to store unneeded books and sports equipment. Don’t try to save money by buying the biggest pack ‘to last through college’ – find a bag that is appropriate to the child’s size. I recommend bringing your child with their school bag to see me so that they can be advised on the best way to protect their spine when they are carrying school bags. If this is not available to you, I am happy for you to send a photo of your child and backpack to offer advice to dr.kiri. chiropractor@gmail.com. Or if you see me around please feel free to stop and ask me. Although I am based here in Raglan I am not currently offering services here. Kiri Binnersley 1. Negrini, S., and Carabalona, R (2002). My interest in natural health was born from my experiences with body pain starting from a very young age. I grew up in Queenstown where my passion for action and adventure sports became a huge part of my life; I was elected to represent New Zealand in both Figure Skating and Snowboarding. Spending most of my time training took its toll on my body, eventually tearing my ACL ligament and ultimately meaning I could no longer compete. I chose to take a new direction. After positive experiences with Chiropractic care I was inspired to give back and study Chiropractic. I am interested in treating the root cause of the problem as opposed to focusing on the illness. The Maori philosophy of Hauora guides me in my practise combining physical, social, spiritual, mental and emotional wellbeing. I am currently practicing in Hamilton at Health Performance Chiropractic but I plan to start something closer to home next year. If you are interested in Chiropractic care please feel free to get in touch with me at Health Performance Chiropractic in Hamilton, contact number (07) 856 0205.
