Councillors unanimously agreed to support the staff recommendation to adopt the targeted rate, citing environmental benefits and Central Government’s direction of travel on food waste among reasons for doing so. The decision follows a monthlong consultation process held in March when 55% of 657 respondents supported the proposed targeted rate. Property owners who live in Raglan were the majority of respondents (76%), while 12% of the respondents were tenants, 5% were holiday homeowners, 2% were landlords who don’t live in Raglan and 2% were business owners. About 55% of local property owners, just over 85% of tenants, 30% of holiday homeowners, 62% of landlords and 81% of business owners supported the targeted rate. Supporters of the targeted rate highlighted the great work that Xtreme Zero Waste (XZW) does in the area of waste minimisation and they acknowledged the importance of the service to the environment. “Although we compost at home, we also use the XZW food collection particularly for meat and citrus. This is a very valuable community resource.

“We buy compost from XZW for our vegetable garden. The food waste collection, our own composting and the excellent recycling programme at XZW, mean that we put very little into the landfill, maybe one bag per six weeks,” said one submitter. Those who opposed the targeted rate said they already composted at home and said it should be user-pays and many did not agree with an extra financial burden on ratepayers. “I think this program is awesome for residents who, unlike me, don’t compost at home. However, I am tired of my rates going up,” said another submitter. Raglan Ward Councillor Lisa Thomson thanked the Raglan community for getting involved with the consultation. She acknowledged the many different points of view, but she is very pleased the food collection service will be continuing. “Whaingaroa has been one of the leaders in food waste collection in New Zealand thanks to the efforts of Xtreme Zero Waste,” says Ms Thomson. “I’m so glad the future of the collection has been ensured. “While no one ever wants to pay more rates, the environmental benefits brought about by reducing the amount of food waste that ends up in landfill are so important. “What we’re doing here, both our council and our community, is taking climate change action – action that is needed for the longterm health of our town, out district and our country.”

Whāingaroa youth put their Jamaican sound System to good use.

outh Week is a nationwide celebration of events organised by young New Zealanders to honour the talents, passions, and achievements of Aotearoa’s youth. This year Youth Week took place from the 7-15th of May. Locally, Whaingaroa held their event at Papahua on Saturday the 14th of May, a collaboration between Kotahi Rangatahi and Expression of YOUth, featuring an art installation, free food, prizes and live DJ’s. At the start of 2020 Whaingaroa’s youth designed and built a Jamaican

inspired speaker system as a part of an innovative Sound System Project. This has become a shared community resource used for various events such as Youth Week 2022. Our two young DJ’s, William Millward and Cuba Godward brought Youth Week alive pumping out some amazing tunes on the decks. Both DJ’s had recently had the opportunity to participate in a DJ course with Glen McIntosh aka “King Macka” and Emily Sandford-May aka “Jinja Cat” through Raglan Area School. This event wouldn't have been possible without the help of our generous sponsors so massive thank

Rangatahi get creative for Youth Week

Opinion We’ve just released this year’s Budget, which sets out the next steps in our plan to build a secure future for New Zealand. In addition to the comprehensive cost of living package which will deliver for 2.1 million workers across the country, there are investments being made that clearly demonstrate that this Government values our rural communities. Let’s start with the rural economy. We are investing $118.4 million for advisory services to support farmers, foresters, growers and whenua Māori owners to accelerate sustainable land use changes and lift productivity. We are also putting $40 million to help transformation in the forestry, wood processing, food and beverage and fisheries sectors. Further support in the form of $31.6 million to help maintain and lift animal welfare practices across Aotearoa New Zealand and $110 million to boost the biosecurity system and continue the Mycoplasma bovis eradication programme. This budget delivers a real, practical food and fibre sector investment package of more than $1 billion. In addition to the lift for food and fibre, regional tourism will also see investment. As someone who has spent time working in regional tourism, based in an i-SITE, I am thrilled to see that three core networks within the tourism sector are receiving new investment to gear up for the return of international tourists and business travellers, as the country fully reconnects to the world. More than $5 million will go to Regional Tourism New Zealand, which supports 31 regional tourism organisations, i-SITEs, and the famous tourism trade show, TRENZ. It isn’t just the rural economy that is getting a boost. This budget also delivers a better quality of life for those of us who live rurally. Not only are we removing barriers to getting a driver licence, helping 64,000 Kiwis get on the road and into work, but also improving and expanding our air ambulance fleet with an additional $90.7 million. When you live in rural New Zealand and urgently need help from the health system you become acutely aware of how far away help can really be. When the rescue helicopter flies over my house I am so thankful that there is an amazing crew heading to Mount Taranaki to help a tramper or to the back blocks to help a farmer. This funding will help those awesome crews to better provide this essential service. Of course, as we do this, we’ll continue to carefully manage the books – and our careful fiscal management means we return to surplus quicker than National did after the global financial crisis. This budget proves, yet again, that we back our farmers and provincial communities and are committed to providing the support needed to secure our future. n Saturday 14 May local rangatahi came together to take part in a couple of creative events geared towards celebrating youth in our community. "Our voices matter and we deserve to be heard” was the theme of Youth Week this year. Youth Week is a yearly festival run by Ara Taiohi, an organisation that enables young people to create inclusive youth events across Aotearoa. It runs from the 7th-15th of May and has a new theme each year. Locally in Whaingaroa, organisers brought the community together through the opportunity of self-expression. Freedom of expression is a crucial part of our world and a human right. It is important because it ensures our beliefs, ideas, emotions and needs are heard. Many of us have the privilege of freedom of expression and an aim of our event was offering others this freedom. It was brilliant to be part of a unification of diverse groups across our community for a progressive and positive purpose. “As young people, we are the future, and so our voices are important and need to be heard.”- Luna De La Cruz At the skatepark on May 15th, kids, teens and young adults created art in the windy sunshine whilst the music from the Raglan Area School DJ event poured out of the speakers. Delicious soup and pizzas lined the tables alongside fresh fruit and juice.

Local rangatahi created pieces of art that refelected their self- expression. “It was beautiful to see all the smiles and our community coming together.” - Vida Bradbury Creating this event took lots of effort and planning. We had fun and made the most of some great learning opportunities. “It was very empowering to create and partake in Youth Week” - Stella O’Donnell. The artworks will be publicly exhibited in Raglan soon.

Council discourages horse riding on beaches despite bylaw invalidity by Janine Jackson

In the meantime, council continues to discourage aikato District Council is asking people not to use the Wainui horse-riding on beaches. Taking the popular beach areas of Wainamu and Reserve to access the beach for horse Ngarunui beaches in Raglan as an example, the riding despite it coming to light that a reasons for this include: bylaw covering this activity is invalid. Council’s Reserves and Beaches Bylaw 2016 states that: “No person shall lead or ride any horse or other animal on any area of a reserve except on those areas set aside specifically for such purpose, or with the prior written permission of the council.” Under the Reserves Act 1977, a bylaw of this nature requires ministerial approval for it to become enforceable. This last step was not completed back in 2016 which means council is unable to prosecute for breaches of the bylaw This information was revealed when Horse Access Advocates Waikato Inc. (HAAWI) instigated a judicial review of the bylaw after council installed signs advising people were not allowed to ride horses at Wainamu Beach in Raglan. Council is proposing to rectify this error by creating a new bylaw this year, which is likely to cover activities included in the current, unapproved bylaw. The proposed draft bylaw will go out to the local community for consultation and submissions will be considered before the final bylaw is adopted by council and ministerial approval is sought. Anyone making submissions will be given the opportunity to present their views to the council in person.

- There are shellfish beds in the intertidal areas of the beach that are exposed to potential damage from horses being ridden on the beach. - A lot of work has gone into restoring the sand dune areas in an effort to combat effects of erosion. There are some horse riders who continue to venture into the dunes, damaging this environmentally sensitive area. - As the district grows, like Raglan is doing, there’s more potential for horse v human conflict increasing the health and safety risk. “While we acknowledge the recreational value of riding horses, and we are sure that many horse riders are responsible and considerate when carrying out their chosen recreational activity, we still feel the potential risks outlined above are serious enough for us to continue to discourage people from riding their horses from our reserves on to the beach,”council’s general manager service delivery Roger MacCulloch says. “The procedural error made six years ago is regrettable and we will be creating a new bylaw this year. “But it is important to note that community input will play a vital role in shaping up the bylaw through engagement and consultation with our communities.” Horses at the beach. ucked in beside the Raglan iHub on Wainui Road, the Aroha Free Pantry is giving excess food a new lease of life and helping local people dealing with food poverty. The pantry was built by Rose Wallis, who wanted to replicate the Whaingaroa Aroha stand that had been across the road but was taken down during the first Covid lockdown. You might have noticed the lady regularly restocking and tidying the pantry space; that’s Rose. As its name would suggest, the pantry was set up for food but clothing, books, knick knacks and other items are sometimes dropped off. Jono Hutson, who helps Rose with the pantry and some of her other community

projects, says theses items often take up space that food could occupy. “It detracts from the pantry’s real purpose if there are mattresses or unwanted clothes or piles of rubbish. Some of those items should go to the Lion’s or Kaahu’s Nest.” As for the rubbish, it ends up in the landfill at the expense of the pantry volunteers. Jono says, they do their best to distribute the items to families but it takes away from their primary purpose of redistributing food to vulnerable whānau in Whaingaroa. And not only does Rose look after the pantry she has also started Raglan Community Fruit and Vege, a fruit harvesting group. Working with orchard owners, local gardeners and property owners with an abundance of produce, Rose, Jono and other volunteers gather the excess to restock the

pantry, deliver to families in need, donate to the Surfside Foodbank and to the Feed the Kids project at Raglan Area School. “The connections Rose has in the community are priceless,” Jono says. When she’s not harvesting fruit and vegetables, tidying and restocking the pantry, Rose also works with SuperValue to make and deliver food boxes to families every week. One look at the photos Rose shares on Facebook and you know she’s one hell of a gardener. She’s the type of gardener whose excess produce doesn’t go to waste: if she’s not bottling, pickling and preserving, she’s sharing her garden surplus with family, friends and the wider community. And they might get a bottle or two of her preserves as well.

New sandpit for school

his week the Chronicle caught up with Andrew from Crafted Concrete to hear about his bespoke handmade concrete items. Tell us about your business. At Crafted Concrete we create bespoke handmade concrete items for the home. I work closely with clients to design and create pieces that are unique for them and locally made in Raglan. When did you open and why did you decide to start a concrete business? I started in my garage in 2020; in June 2021 I moved into my current workshop at 12-1 Nau Mai Rd. I have always enjoyed doing something creative. After making a countertop for my own kitchen, I discovered a method of creating a lighter and stronger concrete product. Following some work experience with a company in Auckland and lots of research, I decided that it would be great to be able to offer this product in Raglan and

provide an alternative to timber, stainless steel or engineered stone as options for countertops. What are the concrete services that you provide? We make countertop vanity sinks, custom made vanities with integral sinks cast in, countertops for kitchen and island surfaces, outdoor BBQ surfaces and table tops and fireplace hearths. Pretty much anything is achievable with concrete so I am open to other projects. Do you specialise? I specialise in glass fibre reinforced concrete (GFRC) which enables me to create light and strong pieces, weighing about a third of a traditional concrete countertop. I have the ability to create a fine elegant look or a more substantial, solid look. How can people get in touch? I can be reached on 021855019. We have an exciting new project that we are getting underway which is much needed for a small coastal town – an indoor heated swimming pool, located at Rangitahi Penisula. Being a coastal town, it is of utmost importance that we have the facilities to teach our young ones how to swim, and also help our community stay fit and active. This project is in the initial planning stages, but we will be sharing this development as we go, and looking for sponsorship partners to bring this project to life.

his week we catch up with the team at Raglan Medical to get an update on how things are tracking at our local medical centre. At this stage of the pandemic what adaptions to services are still in place? All patients are still screened when making appointments & again when they arrive at the clinic to ensure potentially infectious ‘red’ patients are seen in a dedicated room. This is the coding that we use to identify patients to keep everyone safe while in the building. A ‘red’ patient may have COVID-19 symptoms or any other potentially infectious illness. A ‘green’ patient may need to see a clinician but does not pose any infectious risk to others. What is the most challenging aspect of the situation? Constant changes in protocols, alert levels, social distancing, isolation requirements and vaccine requirements was the most challenging aspect over the last two years and, despite expanding our team in anticipation of the pandemic, the workload managing positive COVID-19 cases has been substantial. How do you expect things to change in winter? If the number of COVID-19 cases continue to decline we will have more doctor appointments available, and we will slowly start to use our waiting room again for ‘green’ patients instead of having them wait in their car. How can patients help to ensure your systems run efficiently? Our team are working extremely hard to look after your health needs while also keeping you safe from potential exposures, to

help us provide quality care, please consider the following: • Book well in advance for regular routine appointments, this may mean booking 2-3 weeks ahead to get the doctor of your choice • Keep your phone beside you if you’re waiting on a triage call • Be honest about all infectious symptoms – we will always look after you, but we do need to see you in a dedicated ‘red’ room and if we don’t know in advance, this will cause delays • Order repeat medications 3 working days before you run out • Be understanding when doctors and nurses are running late due to emergencies with other patients • Consider using telephone or video consults in cases where a physical examination may not be necessary. How do you think you have coped in general throughout this time and what do you attribute that to? The Raglan Medical team are a resilient bunch who coped well given the circumstances: no two days were the same as plans, staffing levels and patient demands constantly changed. They’re also hardworking team players who are dedicated to looking after the wellbeing of our community so

while some days were a real challenge, the team also got a lot of satisfaction of being able help patients through this pandemic. We’re very grateful for the amazing support from patients; some baked us cakes, sent cupcakes from Raglan Cakes, bought us vouchers for coffee and delivered flowers to brighten up our days. Satnam from Four Square also accommodated early and late access to his store so regardless of how busy work was, we could get essential supplies for our whanau. Dr Mike purchased a coffee machine when the first lockdown hit while his lovely wife Joan made us freshly cooked lunches every day. All these lovely gestures helped us to cope with the demands that a pandemic put on us as did our team events when social distancing rules and alerts levels allowed. What message do you want to communicate the most to our community? COVID-19 has impacted our ability to deliver services as normal and we are grateful to the patience, kindness and understanding shown to us while we managed this pandemic in our community. Dr Adrian Wilson is originally from Canada, where he trained and worked prior to moving to New Zealand. He enjoys all aspects of being a G.P. and particularly appreciates the opportunity to get to know his patients better over time. He has settled into the Raglan community with his wife and two young daughters. Adrian works Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Dr Anna Gray is from Auckland. She left the city after medical school to work in rural medicine, most recently in Northland. In her spare time, she enjoys all things outdoors and during winter she works at the Mt Ruapehu Clinic. She joined our team in January for a six month contract to help manage patients affected by COVID-19. Special interests include children’s health and urgent care. She will be working Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday until the end of June when she’ll return to Mt Ruapehu.

Dr Hamish Seton is originally from the Waikato. He completed his training at the University of Auckland in 2009 and has been working as a G.P since 2013. He has a special interest in children’s health and skin cancer medicine. He currently works Monday – Wednesday and Fridays but will change to Tuesday & Wednesday from July.

Dr Maria Siegruhn emigrated from Southern Africa to New Zealand over two decades ago. She studied medicine at Otago Medical School. After completing her medical training, she worked in the Bay of Plenty and moved to Raglan in early 2022 & is looking forward to becoming a permanent member of the community. Teresa has been part of the team for 5 years and has lived in Raglan with her husband and two daughters since 1996. She leads the MCA team whilst also working as a Kaiawhina two days a week. The Kaiawhina role is a new and evolving position that is best described as a community health support worker and will lead the way for services to be delivered to our patients in a community setting.

Tippy is from Rotorua and of Te Arawa descent, she has lived in Raglan with her husband since 2013. Coming from a retail background she is new to healthcare and is looking forward to meeting and connecting with more of our Raglan community through this role. Tippy is excited about her change of career and will be enrolling in the MCA formal training program at Wintec early next year.

Born & bred in Raglan, Summer attended Raglan Area School before joining the team last August on work experience. After thoroughly enjoying her placement here and working within the community, she has decided to embark on a career in healthcare. Over the next eight months she will focus on gaining more day-today experience in her role before commencing further studies in health at Wintec.

Odhran moved to Raglan from Ireland in 2012 to be with his then partner, now wife. He joined Raglan Medical in November 2019. following previous roles in the disability sector throughout the Waikato. Outside of work, he loves spending time with his wife and 2 young kids, playing bass guitar, mountain biking and tramping.

Michelle has worked at the clinic for nine years. Originally from Ireland, she’s been living in Raglan for the last sixteen years with her kiwi husband and two teenage kids. Key aspects of her role are to ensure the smooth day to day running of the clinic whilst also managing all the human resources and financial aspects of the business. Michelle is passionate about expanding the range of heath services available to our local whānau.

Dr Michael Loten is the clinic owner and long-term GP at Raglan Medical. He was born and raised in NZ. Mike qualified from the University of Otago in 1990, moving with his family to Raglan in 2007 to enjoy a rural lifestyle. He loves the variety of work that general practice offers and specializes in skin assessments, minor surgery, and travel medicine. Mike has appointments on Monday, Thursday morning and Fridays.

Kristi Daniel, Nurse Lead Kristi started her nursing career in Hood River Oregon, USA working in the operating theatre and then moved to the Waikato about 16 years ago. She worked in the Waikato Hospital Intensive Care Unit before making the move to work at Raglan Medical eight years ago. She specialises in diabetes and chronic disease management and is currently studying to become a Nurse Practitioner.

Dr Renee Beekhuis, originally comes from the Netherlands where she has been working as GP since 2012. She is happy to live in beautiful Raglan with her husband and two children and enjoys contributing to the efforts made by the Raglan Medical team to look after our community’s health & wellbeing. Currently she works Monday to Thursday.

Amy Devlin, Nurse Lead Amy joined the team four years ago having previously spent 10 years in emergency nursing. She loves working in the community where she has lived for eleven years with her husband and two young children. Amy is passionate about community nursing and health promotion and is currently studying to become a Nurse Practitioner.

Travel Consults As more people are starting to travel overseas, we have noticed a greater demand for travel consults, however these need to be booked 4-5 weeks in advance to ensure you have the correct documentation required for travel. This service is charged at $70 per 15-minute consult, please note we do not provide PCR or RAT testing for travel purposes.

Aisha Wiles, Dietitian Aisha moved over from Scotland 3 years ago with her husband and 3 young boys to enjoy the relaxed Raglan lifestyle. She has a background of community dietetics in Scotland and as a Renal Dietitian in Waikato hospital. Currently she works every Friday with appointments being referred inhouse from our clinical team.

What should I do if I test positive for COVID-19? Isolate immediately and report the result online through My Covid Record or ring the helpline on 0800 222 478 option 3. We will be notified of your result by the MOH and will contact you to assess your health needs and wellbeing.

What happens if I don’t report my positive result? Even if your symptoms are mild, it’s best to have accurate health records in case you develop long or post COVID symptoms. It may also affect your ability to travel as most countries/airlines require negative PCR or RAT tests before departure. So, if you’ve had COVID-19 and recovered, you may still test positive up three months after infection, so be reporting it accurately means you can obtain a medical record for travel.

Katie came from an operating theatre background before joining the Raglan Medical team in 2016. She is a long time local and lives here in Raglan with her three teenage kids. Katie enjoys working within the community and contributing to making a difference in primary health care. She has a keen interest in women’s health and minor surgery.

Debbie moved to Raglan permanently from Morrinsville at the start of 2020 and initially joined the team to help with COVID-19 testing. She previously worked at Waikato Hospital and has an interest in emergency nursing. Debbie’s first love is the sea so when she’s not working, you will find her fishing, swimming, and canoeing around the harbour.

Selina grew up in Taranaki and moved to Raglan from Hamilton in 2019. She made the change from emergency nursing to practice nursing last year and loves being able to work within the community. Selina is passionate about health promotion and disease prevention. In her spare time, she loves hiking, reading, and trying new things.

Fiona initially joined the team last year to help with covid vaccinations and as demand for services has grown, she has now become a permanent member of the team. Her nursing background has been working with young children and their whānau, and more recently as a triage nurse for Healthline. She lives in Te Mata with her husband, 2 young boys and 4 alpacas. She is passionate about healthcare and wellness being accessible to everyone in the community.

Laura has a background in oncology, renal and emergency nursing. She spent two winters working at the medical centre at Mt Ruapehu before coming to Raglan to join the team and help us get through the COVID-19 pandemic. Laura is passionate about women’s health, sexual health and intimate partner violence prevention. She is about to travel to Mexico, but you may see her again in the near future!

Amber has been part of the team since 2015 and works on a casual basis when not busy in her job as a school-based nurse at Raglan Area & Fraser High School. She lives locally with her young family.

Fiona has been in Raglan since 2006, she originally registered in NZ as a pharmacist and after further study qualified as a prescriber in 2019. She has a special interest in diabetes, high blood pressure, respiratory and heart disease. The focus of Fiona’s appointments is to increase a person’s knowledge about their health conditions, and how the medicines they are prescribed work; she is at the practice on Thursdays with appointments being referred inhouse from our clinical team.

Rapid immunisation catch-up campaign

aikato DHB wants to boost immunisation rates ahead of what is predicted to be a tough winter as our borders open with new flu variants and other serious illnesses such as measles and whooping cough circulating. The reduced prevalence of flu and measles during the last two years, and a focus on COVID-19, has contributed to a drop in some other immunisations since 2020. There has been an additional drop for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccinations at 12-months and 15-months. This is largely due to a change in the MMR immunisation schedule which saw the second MMR dose previously administered at 4-years now due at 15-months. This means there is a group of children aged 2-5-years who need to catchup with their second MMR vaccination. In the Waikato district area fully immunised childhood rates have dropped from 87.9% to 80.4% for 8-month-olds, from 88.7% to 77.7% for 24-month-olds, and from 79% to 74% for 5-year-olds. “We need vaccination rates of 95% to reach ‘community immunity’ sometimes known as ‘herd immunity’ to help prevent outbreaks of diseases such as measles, mumps and rubella,” says Dr Felicity Dumble, WDHB Medical Officer of Health. “Disease outbreaks can have serious consequences for families and communities. Those who are not immunised, whether that’s by choice or other circumstances, are worst affected by these outbreaks.” The 2019 measles outbreak infected more than 2,000 people, and 700 had to go to hospital, with Māori and Pacific communities the most affected. Dr Dumble says Māori have also been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19, including a significant impact on their vaccination coverage for multiple reasons. “Moving forward we are endeavouring to learn from what components worked well for Māori during the COVID-19 vaccination campaign and incorporate these in our programmes,” says Dr Dumble. The DHB is now expanding what is offered at its COVID-19 community vaccination sites to include free influenza immunisations to those eligible, free MMR immunisations to 3-years and above, and COVID-19 vaccines to 5-years and above. GPs and pharmacies are also providing vaccination services for MMR, influenza and whooping cough. Influenza immunisations are now free to those aged 65 and over, Māori and Pacific people aged 55 and over, adults with health conditions such as asthma and diabetes, children aged 4 years or under who have a history of significant respiratory illness, and pregnant women. Those who do not qualify

for the funded vaccine are encouraged to buy one through their chosen provider. There is also an ongoing campaign to get teenagers and young adults fully immunised against measles as some have missed one or both recommended doses of MMR vaccine. It’s safe to have MMR vaccinations even if you can’t find out whether you’re up to date. MMR vaccines have been used in New Zealand since 1990, and are free to anyone born after 1969 who is eligible to receive publicly funded health and disability services here. COVID-19 is also expected to be an ongoing concern with overseas experience indicating a second peak is common. The DHB is encouraging all eligible people to get their COVID-19 booster to help protect against the Omicron variant. Teenagers aged 16 or 17 can now get a COVID-19 booster, 6 months after completing their primary course, from any of the multi-vaccination sites. Those who contracted COVID-19 during the latest outbreak will begin to become eligible for their boosters also, following a three month stand-down to recover from the virus. Whooping cough (pertussis) is also a concern with the last outbreak in 2017 seeing as many as 600 cases a month. “Whooping cough is highly contagious, and most severe in babies so keeping to the immunisation schedule of six weeks, three months and five months of age is crucial in controlling outbreaks.” “With the opening up of our borders and the expected return of whooping cough, we are encouraging pregnant women to get vaccinated against it as new-born babies getting the anti-bodies from their mums is really, really important in giving early protection against this severe, potentially deadly disease,” says Dr Dumble. Pregnant women are also able to get free influenza vaccine during pregnancy to protect them and their unborn babies. People who aren’t sure whether they are up-to-date with all their scheduled immunisations can check with their GP or in their Well Child Tamariki Ora My Health Book, says Dr Dumble. “Getting immunised is about being a kaitiaki for your whānau,” says Dr Dumble. “When you get vaccinated you look after your own health and help prevent the spread of disease. So it seems that this street was so named because of the purpose it served as a gathering place (although not as picturesque as the similarly named areas in the quaint English villages that the settlers would have been familiar with). KEEP PILLAR BOXES CLEAR OF GARDENS AND TREES Make sure they are visible at all times to avoid damage

Raglan Ward Councillor Lisa Thomson says that long-term projects like the wharf upgrade will continue on as planned but the board doesn’t have much time left in the term to start anything new. “It's really tying up loose ends and getting things done as much as we can because I'm unsure who will be standing again from the community boards.” With nominations opening up in July for local government positions, come October this year, the Whāingaroa community could have new members sitting on the community board. Lisa has declared her interest in standing for a third term as Raglan Ward Councillor and adds that, “I hope a number of them [current members] stand again for that continuity and there's still lots of work to be done. Three years isn't enough time, particularly with those projects that we've got underway currently.” While she expects the majority of the current members to stand again, Lisa could not confirm. Manu Bay Breakwater With a number of stakeholders having interest in the breakwater

issue, a meeting has been set up by Tim Clarke for late May to discuss the ongoing issues. This hui will be the first in-person meeting following months of delays due to the pandemic. The old Manu Bay breakwater was replaced in 2015 when the end section of the previous structure started to fail in late 2014. Since the replacement breakwater has been in place there have been a number of safety issues affecting users of the boat ramp. The breakwater exists to prevent water and rocks from going over the structure where boats and jetskis are launching on the other side; however, the current design doesn’t prevent these issues from occurring and these problems have been a source of concern since 2015. Discretionary Fund Lisa encourages members of the community to apply to the discretionary fund if they have an idea for a project that would benefit the wider Whāingaroa community. The fund exists for the community and, due to a recent review, the Community Board members have more discretion around who they award the funds to. A great example of a community project is ‘My Mental Health Toolbox’ by local Ruby Gibbs. She received funding to print a booklet featuring tools for mental health which is distributed free through businesses in town.
