n the last two weeks Police have received reports of six family harm matters, eight vehicle crashes and four dishonesty offences. Police have processed two people for drink driving and impounded two vehicles for boy racer activity and are seeking a third. Crime Prevention Tip - As a reminder when trading on Facebook, please be cautious. The Facebook marketplace is not policed by Facebook and there are no security measures to prevent fraud and or the sale and
purchase of stolen property. Too often Police field complaints of fraud when items and or money aren’t delivered. Safe driving tip - If you are driving on SH 23 or an area with a high posted speed limit, or if the road is narrow it may be best to wait on the left-hand side of the road to make the turn, rather than stopping in the middle of the road. You place yourself at risk of being hit from behind and shunted into oncoming traffic. Be safe, enjoy the autumn and remember to look out for one another! Snr Const. Andrew Murphy and the Raglan Team

n Saturday May 15th the Whāingaroa Whānau Hoe Waka club hosted the 26th Annual Whāingaroa Hoe. After a break last year due to Covid-19, paddlers from all over Aotearoa registered and travelled to Whāingaroa for this exciting and historic Waka Ama event. This year saw over 1000 paddlers take to the water in three events: The Short Course 8km which attracts both novice and experienced teams, the Women’s and Mixed Team’s 20km, and the Men’s 20km. The day was opened and closed with blessings and karakia given by local kaumatua Sean Ellison, Paddy Kaa and Lucy Haru. The weather was unpredictable on the day and the conditions were challenging but enjoyable. There are two memorial trophies associated with The Hoe. The Chrissy Herbert Memorial Trophy went to team ‘Wahine Express’ from Ruamata. The Piripi Kereopa Memorial Trophy was awarded to ‘Haroa’ from Hei Matau. The club points Taonga and $500 was awarded to Rotorua Club, Ruamata, with an impressive nine teams registered this year. All race results are now available at wakaama.co.nz.
as a first time Hoe paddler: “The start was such a crazy experience that I don’t think you could experience something like that at any other race”. For local club members, the main kaupapa of the day is hosting the many visitors and ensuring their safety on the Whāingaroa Harbour. It also means serving hot kai to around 1000 paddlers. Club members, whānau and friends worked tirelessly to ensure everyone was well looked after from the moment they arrived. As Race Director Conan Herbert commented, “The race is a good example of a community working together to put on a great day for paddlers and supporters from all over the country to enjoy”. Behind the National Sprint Championships held at Lake Karapiro each year, the Whāingaroa Hoe is the next biggest event on the Waka Ama calendar. The support of all the safety and support boats is invaluable and the club would
like to acknowledge the skilled skippers, medics, photographers and support crews from the Raglan community who volunteer their time to this event. The skippers at this year’s event were: Brady Hartstone, Phil Shea, Clint Jowsey, Chris Leuthart, Kyle Leuthart, Tom Rudolph, Terry Wright, Ron Opie, Alec Bell, Don Rangiawha, Hoturoa Kerr. Thanks also to all the sponsors and supporters of this event: Waka Ama NZ, Tai Paddles, Raglan Fish at the Wharf, Raglan Surf Emporium, Raglan Roast, Raglan Holiday Park, Raglan 4 Square, Christie Carpentry, Trade Aid Raglan, Orca Restaurant, SWOP, SuperValue Raglan, The Herbal Dispensary, Nikau Osteo, Ulo’s Shop, Raglan Food Co., Raglan Floral Co., Zinnia, Bohemian Gypsy, Raglan Top Cut Butchery, West Coast Hire.

Whāingaroa had two novice teams entered in the 8km event and both teams performed brilliantly in exciting conditions and a crammed harbour. With over 70 waka on the start line of the 8km race, teams take to the wider stretch of water outside of Te Kopua to begin. Whāingaroa club member Juanita Asi commented on her experience

Residents vent over vote to fence off Raglan airfield
W
aikato District Council looks to have a possible dogfight on its hands after a packed public meeting in Raglan last week made clear the depth of community opposition to its insistence on banning residents from crossing or walking on the local airfield. More than 70 people turned out to the Wednesday evening meeting in the town hall supper room, most of them clearly unhappy that a recent council meeting in Ngāruawāhia had overridden the Raglan Community Board’s request for time to come up with a compromise on the issue. The council is understood to have blindsided some community board members last month with plans to complete a 1.2 metre-high fence around the whole of the airfield, remove the two public access gates and create a separate walkway from near the camp entrance to the beach flanking the northern side of the runway. Council staff came up with the plans after receiving “notification from the Civil Aviation Authority directing aerodrome operators to review their safety procedures and processes”. However, it emerged at last week’s town hall meeting that this was primarily a safety message targeted at pilots. Meanwhile a subsequent review and audit of Raglan airfield – undertaken by an aviation consultant engaged by the council – does not appear to have been released, and nor it
seems has any information on the number of incidents or near misses locally. Several speakers at last week’s public meeting doubted that any catalogue of incidents existed, or that there was any evidence locals were acting irresponsibly. There were no formal resolutions at the meeting – convened by former Raglan Community Board member Alan Vink – but a straw poll made clear the wishes of the majority. “We are asking that no [continuous] fence is built, and that signage is clearer,” a meeting summary read. “That said, we don’t believe it is necessary to prohibit people walking across the airfield and landing strip,” it added. “We note the CAA do not require this either.” The summary confirmed the council would also be asked to look into some kind of warning system or device to “ramp up” airfield safety. Resident Matt Stockton – in a separate account of the meeting which he posted on Facebook – noted warning systems were commercially available and used at other New Zealand airfields. Mention was made at the meeting of various possible warning systems including one where pilots could set off airfield lights from their cellphones, or a horn as happened at Pauanui on the Coromandel Peninsula. Raglan Community Board chair Gabrielle Parson revealed at the town hall meeting that the board had been working with council staff recently on a compromise scenario at the airfield.
Untimely mishap: This plane apparently overshot the runway at the weekend, clipping the far fence. Two Gordonton microlight pilots who However, according to Matt Stockton, that would still mean the airfield open space came along to the meeting did feel the Raglan community had “got lethargic” in was inaccessible to the community. Other discussion points at the town hall recent years over airfield safety, and cited an meeting ranged from whether the Safety instance where a group of people sat down at Work Act was the right legislation for a and refused to move off the runway. Alan Vink noted in his summary that there recreational airfield to whether any signage were longer-term issues over the ownership should be a council or CAA responsibility. Council’s general manager service of the land in question and the airfield’s delivery, Roger MacCulloch, insisted he and location. Raglan Playcentre Wednesday Playgroup
H
ere in Whāingaroa we have a Playcentre session at the Scout Hall on Cliff Street every Wednesday during school terms, 9:30-12:30. Playcentre caters to families with children aged 0-6 years, with a focus on child-led learning so that each week there is a variety of learning and play experiences such as building, baking, painting, dressing up, singing and sand and water play. Each Playcentre around New Zealand is cooperatively managed by parents and supported by Playcentre Aotearoa staff at a regional and national level. Our Wednesday play group has been running for many years, and this year we say farewell to our Centre Support Worker, Sue Esther, who has been with us, along
with other centres in the Waikato including Te Akau, for over 10 years. Sue will still be in Playcentre running workshops and doing the online tutoring and Space groups, but we’ll miss her friendly face and super helpful presence in Whāingaroa. Said Miette, a former volunteer and honorary grandmother at Raglan Playcentre: “What a wonderful dedicated supporter Sue has been for more than a decade at the least. I witnessed her enthusiastic assistance over the years.” All whānau are welcome at Raglan Playcentre and we are currently on the lookout for volunteers to help us with the session (e.g. making playdough, supporting parents and visitors). If you are interested in helping out please contact raglan@playcentre.org.
nz or pop down any Wednesday morning during school term and say hello. Parents and whānau are the first educators of children, and Playcentres around New Zealand foster the involvement of whānau through early childhood education. As a family, and as a community, you’ll build your own village with Playcentre: making life-long friends along the way. See children delight in their surroundings- play with them, alongside them, encourage them to interact with others while you meet other parents and educators. Raglan Playcentre meets Wednesdays (9:30am-12:30pm) at Cliff St Scout Hall. Parents and children 0-6 years welcome. Contact raglan@playcentre.org.nz for more information.

Plenty of food for thought as locals share kai ideas, initiatives A social cafe where people eat for free or for a koha, a school holiday vegetable garden project and a few more free pantries like the popular ‘Aroha’ stand downtown look set to pop up around the Raglan district as a result of a community push to make food more accessible.
“Imagine if healthy food was easily available and affordable for everyone, where growing and sharing good food was a normal part of everyday life,” says Whāingaroa Environment Centre (WEC) food project coordinator Tania Ashman. This was the vision WEC presented last Saturday at a ‘Kai in our Community’ workshop where 20 or so residents interested in the concept met for a morning to brainstorm the possibilities. Raglan’s resilience as a supplier of food – using last year’s Covid experience as an example of the caring and sharing shown within our community at a time of crisis – was also discussed. “We did well as a group of connected people,” Tania told the Chronicle. “We took the responsibility of looking out for one another seriously.” Now the environment centre wants to work with the community to build on that resilience and make this vision of plenty for all a reality. It’s a “brand new” project, said Tania, which is being funded by the Ministry of Social Development to focus specifically on food security in and around our town. As WEC operations manager Sarah Roberts also explained, the broad aim is to see what growing and sharing food in Whāingaroa will look like in the future, and how Raglan as a community can make it happen. To kick-start the korero or conversation, facilitator and Whale Bay resident Helen Ritchie got Saturday morning’s group to map
Brainstorming: WEC food project coordinator Tania Ashman (centre front) looks on as locals feed in ideas. out what is already happening in Whāingaroa, a “proud producer” from both land and sea. Everything from Raglan’s Crop Swap and Foodbank – which upscaled from regularly supporting eight families to 80 during the Covid crisis – to the free pantry and community garden downtown got a mention before the group moved on to identifying food gaps and possible solutions in the system. Then it was on to visualising what Raglan wants as a community and figuring out the next steps. Street-sharing projects such as erecting more free pantry stands and instigating neighbourhood planting on berms were put
forward, as was the idea of a social cafe where everybody eats chef-prepared meals for free or for a koha – a collaborative dining concept based on using what we have but feeding bellies not bins. A local restaurateur came up with a possible venue, as did a local resident who also offered to start – with a bit of help – a veggie garden from scratch. Raglan Area School students were also keen to lead a local kai project. An offer of compost for the envisaged garden was quick to follow, as was a barrage of other “quick win” ideas to capture people’s imaginations: a seed-sharing scheme and
seasonal food celebrations being popular, along with getting Raglan on the national foraging app to share its abundance of food sources. WEC vowed to follow up the workshop with further face-to-face contact between participants “to enable these things to happen with support”. Saturday’s workshop at the bowling club was repeated on Monday morning for representatives from local schools, the community house and other organisations like Feed the Kids and Whāingaroa’s own Te Mauri Tau. direct tech junior sports page Update from Raglan Football Club: Interview with new coach Odhran Devlin Q: What is it about the Raglan Football Club experience that encouraged you to coach this year? Odhran: We had such a good year last year. Richard, who was our coach last year was really inspiring. Q: What age group/team are you coaching this year? Odhran: First Kicks, I’m coaching the Seals with help from others, players are 5/6years old. Q: What’s your history with football? Odhran: I played Gaelic football growing up, until age 15. I’ve played indoor soccer on and off throughout my adult life. Q: What football games/ice breakers have been most effective this season? Odhran: The kids are a big fan of the Dinosaur Game. Red Light/Green Light gets them all involved. Q: Can you sum up the coaching experience in three words? Odhran: Rewarding Fun Challenging (but a good challenge) Q: Do you have any children playing with the club? Odhran: My oldest son plays in the team that I coach. Q: How could you describe football training at Papahua Reserve to someone who has never been? We are really fortunate that we have a similar team to last year. Everyone pitches in and is really supportive. This makes it easy for me to coach when everyone is on board. Just come down and have a look, ask questions, everyone’s on board and no one really has a clue, just show up and you will be among friends.

n Saturday the team from Cushman and Wakefield Hamilton partnered up with the Raglan Junior Rugby Club and held a fundraiser BBQ in conjunction with their club day, with all proceeds going back to the Raglan Junior Rugby Club. The fundraiser encouraged the Supporters to come together with friends, family, or colleagues for a BBQ to raise money – it was a successful fun day and great to be involved with the community.
