Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

We are currently enrolled at Waitetuna School primary. Every Tuesday the year seven and eight students travel on a bus to Raglan Area School with Te Mata School students.

I am writing this letter because the 35 seats on the bus are all taken. This leads to large numbers of children standing up. 35 seats on a bus with 50 students is not only unpleasant, but dangerous.

Would you have been happy with your child on an overloaded bus with nothing to hold on to going ninety km/h.

We can’t go places in a car without a full seatbelt, yet you allow 14 kids to stand in a bus without anything to hold onto. This is unacceptable as there are serious health and safety risks.

Sincerely

Eli Fisher and Canyon Overton

Fireworks Bah Humbug - and please next year could we have an organised fireworks display for Matariki rather than to celebrate the failure of a long dead Englishman who tried to blow up the English Parliament...

In this way we might deter the individual sales of fireworks, while allowing those who do to enjoy fireworks along with their friends and family.

And those who do not could stay home with their pets and the small children who recoil at every explosion.

Sheelah Chalklen

A message from Raglan Police

It has been a busy couple of weeks, there has been a marked increase in incidents, and despite several apprehensions it is not slowing.

There have been 24 dishonesty offences including burglary, thefts of vehicles and attempted thefts of vehicles. We strongly recommend utilising a steering wheel lock; this is the easiest, most affordable, and effective prevention. These are sold here in Raglan at Repco and potentially at other businesses going forward, so please do this.

There have been four family harm incidents reported. If you or someone you know is going through family harm, there is a lot of support available out there; please go to the website for a list of contacts: www.police.govt.nz/advice/family-violence/ help. Otherwise, do not hesitate to contact us, it can be just some advice, ‘for a friend’.

Four further prosecutions for driving with excess breath alcohol – expect to be breath tested at any time of the day, including in the morning; just because you have slept, does not necessarily mean you are completely sober.

Finally, there have been some really great examples of the community contacting Police regarding suspicious activity which has ended in great results. It has undoubtably prevented further victims, so thank you to those people, you know who you are. However, there does seem to be some people who are apprehensive about contacting Police which has resulted in some missed opportunities. We cannot reiterate enough; if it is suspicious, and happening now, ring 111. If it is old news, ring 105.

Stay Safe! Look after each other, Andrew, Linda and Raewyn –Raglan Police

Plans revealed for huge wind farm 22km off coast of Raglan

At a press conference held earlier this month, international energy consortium formed by BlueFloat Energy, Energy Estate and Elemental Group announced plans to invest over $6 billion into developing an offshore wind farm off the coast of Raglan.

With the total area of the wind farm stretching from Glenbrook Steel Mill in the north to Raglan in the south, the South Auckland-Waikato offshore wind project is the second investment to be announced by the partnership in New Zealand as part of a nation-wide programme to develop up to 5GW of offshore wind.

The project, currently named Waikato Offshore Wind project, is intended to be developed in phases to generate capacity of up to 1.4 GW of power using both fixed and floating foundation technology and capable of powering around 700,000 homes.

Phase 1 of the project is expected to create about 250 megawatts of generating capacity using up to 20 turbines fixed directly to the sea floor - 22 kilometres off the Raglan coast. The initial phase would create around 300 jobs in construction, operations, and maintenance.

Options for Phase 2 use floating foundations and include the potential for an 800-1,150 MW development using up to 77 turbines positioned to the west or north of Phase 1. Conservatively Phase 2 will create an additional 800 jobs with the potential for additional jobs dependent on the size of the project.

The project is currently at the “feasibility stage” with construction hoped to commence some time before 2030 and the consortium expects the wind farm would take about three years to build.

The consortium say that the turbines will be visible from land on a clear day from certain vantage points and that a comprehensive landscape, visual landscape and visual impact assessment will be prepared as part of the environmental impact assessment.

In terms of impacts on the local fishing industry, Energy Estate co-founder Simon Currie said the consortium was clear the project could be done in a way that protected sea life and the wider marine environment. Currie added that the wind farms were expected to become a “commercial fishing no-go zone”, requiring negotiations with commercial and recreational fishers, and possible compensation.

The lifespan of these turbines is about 30-40 years after which time the turbine would either be decommissioned or refurbished.

Subject to further successful engagement with iwi and stakeholders and obtaining all necessary government and regulatory approvals the consortium hopes to see the first turbines in the water before the end of the decade.

Preparing for Fair Pay Agreements

On 1 December 2022, the Fair Pay Agreements Act (the Act) comes into effect. It will have wide reaching implications, particularly on sectors such as hospitality and other industries which employ seasonal and casual workers. It is important that employers prepare for this change and understand how this significant and complex law will affect them.

A Fair Pay Agreement (FPA) is an agreement that applies to all workers across an industry or occupation, providing sector wide minimum terms and conditions of employment. How the process starts is by a union initiating the bargaining process for a defined group of employees. From there the Act sets out how the process evolves and also what employment terms must be included in an FPA.

An eligible union may initiate bargaining for an FPA if it meets either a representation or public interest test:

• The representation test requires 1,000 employees or 10% of the employees who will be covered by the proposed FPA to support the application to initiate bargaining.

• The public interest test is met if employees who would be within the coverage of the proposed FPA:

• Receive low pay for their work; and

• Meet one or more of the following criteria:

• Little bargaining power in employment;

• A lack of pay progression in employment (e.g. pay only increases with changes to Minimum Pay obligations);

• Inadequate pay, taking into account long or unsociable

hours, or contractual uncertainty (e.g. seasonal or casual workers).

Bargaining for FPAs is to take place within a framework of good faith obligations and processes. The process is expected to be similar to the traditional collective bargaining parties, but with more parties involved. A finalised FPA will apply to all employers within its coverage, regardless of whether or not they have participated in bargaining. Employers covered by the FPA must then provide the minimum employment terms set out to the covered employees. The implications of this are that if you have a business that is covered by an FPA you will be required to provide terms of employment as provided for in the FPA (such as normal hours of work, leave entitlements and minimum base rates, overtime and penalty rates), even if you did not agree to this.

It is important that employers in industries that may be affected (such as hospitality, retail, and cleaning services) are familiar with how the Act could impact them and kept informed. Employers also need to consider important aspects to planning and managing bargaining, including: what key employers will be party to negotiations; how confidentiality will be managed; who will be on the employers’ bargaining team; what are the pay and conditions within the sector and likely benchmarks; how the costs and disruption of bargaining will be managed; how possible new FPA terms will be budgeted for.

Local couple create healing space in memory of family

Tui Cabin on Government Rd might be small but inside enormous amounts of healing work is taking place.

Therese Hogan and Etai Gilad have had a longtime dream for a collaborative wellbeing space and it took two family tragedies in the space of a year to set the wheels in motion.

When the pair lost Etai’s brother Ron in 2019 and Therese’s brother Marty passed away in 2020, they knew it was time to make their dream a reality and Tui Cabin was built in the couple’s backyard.

“Our brothers have inspired us as we're creating this healing space. I know for me, when Marty passed, it was that real, big reminder that life is short. And you've just got to follow your own dreams and do what is going to make you happy in that moment,” Therese says.

Both men took their own lives and they had both battled mental unwellness.

“To us as therapists that work in psychology, bodywork, and energetic work, we are helping people with exactly those kinds of issues, but it’s difficult with your own family. It's very different when a client comes to you - then they want help. They want to make change,” Etai says.

“This is a reminder for our family to know that they (Marty and Ron) are being remembered and that when we help others, we not only help them, we help the whole community.”

Etai and Therese moved to Raglan in 2017 and very quickly ensconced themselves in the community.

Therese took up physiotherapy work at Raglan Physio and Etai, a grief therapist and hypnotherapist, continued his work through Art of Change Therapy.

Both embraced the Raglan Timebank, Etai is a Timebank Champion, and it was through Timebank that they started the very successful Raglan Falafels.

“Timebank is what got us into the community, helped us get to know people and make connections in the community. The falafels started as a fundraising for Timebank,” Etai says.

But the couple felt they had more to offer, and the death of their brothers was the inspiration they needed to finally build the cabin.

“I've been feeling this pull to move away from physiotherapy for a long time, and then it kept pulling me back. But this is a dream that I've had to be in this little beautiful space, that's close to nature, my garden and to my kitchen, and just offering heartfelt work, rather than in my head. I was working towards it, but not really clearly. When Marty died, within a couple of months it became really clear to me that you just have to do this. He really inspired me in his passing to follow my dreams and do what I need to do,” Therese says.

With the support of their landlords and friends and a lot of help from the community they began building Tui Cabin in August last year.

“We built it with healing intentions in mind as well. It’s got crystals in the walls. It’s cool to be able to work from a space being built from that intention,” Therese says.

“We took the time to really find what we want. Not to rush into finish building it, but just taking the time to build something that we enjoy being in,” Etai says.

When you enter the space, it immediately feels calm. The walls are lined with naturally treated

Nine-hole golfers

Raglan nine-hole golfers have been seen enjoying a nutritious lunch following nine holes of golf on a Sunday Club Day in November. nine-hole golf is becoming more popular as it is a cheaper option and takes up less time.

It costs only $350.00 for a 9-hole membership as compared to a $480.00 for an 18-hole membership. The shorter time factor is also a real advantage, a round only taking two hours to complete, allowing for after work golf moments!

With less holes to play, nine holes of golf tends to be more enjoyable and relaxing.

Walking nine holes can still yield the golfer positive health benefits, and because it is more physically manageable families are more likely to tag along and create some special family moments.

If this sounds like you, come on up to the Raglan Golf Club every Sunday at 10.00am, pay your green fees, and join up with the nine-hole club members for a bit of a hit and giggle.

wood and wool insulation helps with maintaining temperature.

In true Raglan style, many of the fittings have been recycled, like the windows which came from friends in Waingaro.

Therese will operate Fusion Flow from the cabin offering massage and bodywork, and Etai will also provide massage - the pair offer couple’s sessions - and he will continue using

the main house for Art of Change Therapy. They also both offer mirimiri through Poihakena Marae for Te Toi Ora ki Whaingaroa.

As well as sharing their space with clients, the couple have offered Tui Cabin up to other local therapists to use for reiki and reflexology.

Raglan’s creative community gets into the Christmas spirit

Someone’s been busy in their Raglan workshop and it’s not Santa – it’s Susanne Giessen-Prinz who, at this time of year, is hard at work silvering dried leaves to hang from a simple Christmas tree structure of wire and foliage, then adding op shop baubles and ceramic hearts she’s handcrafted.

There’s a wreath of intertwined branches hanging above it all with magical, miniature unicorns prancing around their midair merrygo-round.

Her delightfully offbeat decorations are all destined for the annual ‘Spirit of Christmas’ exhibition, which opens at the Old School Arts Centre in Stewart St this coming Saturday.

Susanne, the co-ordinator of the two-week show, declares proudly that every item will be locally made and there’ll be no plastic. Rather it’s a passion for “authentic New Zealand arts and crafts” that drives the show.

When the Chronicle drops by Susanne’s Wallis St workshop, two young visitors – nineyear-old Hazel and sister Frankie, just a year younger – are entranced with the “sparkle” of the small-scale nativity scene that greets them. Their mother Anna March has brought them to the studio, hidden away behind the old dairy factory across the causeway, for afternoon tea and Susanne has just whipped up some homemade waffles.

Susanne’s one of 18 local arts and craftspeople who’ve been preparing to show their works, all of which will be priced between $5 and $500.

The one-time florist turned potter hopes the display will give Christmas shoppers new ideas and encourage them to “do things differently” – maybe ditch the greens and reds of traditional Yuletide – rather than relying on the big Hamilton stores for generic gifts and decorations.

Come and support local, she urges townsfolk. “Be amazed at how creative and quirky our awesome arts and crafts community is.”

There’ll be everything from painted ceramics and hand-built bird boxes to clay and textiles, jewellery, handcrafted knives, three-dimensional driftwood Christmas trees, eco-printed fabric creations, wall art and the ever-popular cookie mix in decorative jars.

Funds raised are poured back into Raglan’s arts community, and among other things will hopefully provide a “buffer” of about $2000 towards repairs and replacements of kilns at the clay shed.

* The Spirit of Christmas exhibition runs from Saturday Nov 26 through to Sunday Dec 11, ending along with the last of this year’s monthly creative markets at the Old School. The Ragtimers’ ukulele group –recently featured on Maori Television – is set to perform at the exhibition during the middle weekend, Dec 3-4.

Op-ed: Organic products bill

Raglan is the very proud home of many fantastic, nation-leading organic companies.

From Raglan Food Co’s famous (and delicious) coconut yoghurt to Soul Food Farms’ organically grown and locally distributed produce, and let’s not forget, The Herbal Dispensary’s wide range of holistic healing products, our vibrant community really is paving the way for a thriving and sustainable future.

Late last month, the highly anticipated Organic Products and Production Bill passed its second reading in the House. Originally introduced in February of 2020, this bill has immense opportunity to put New Zealand on the map as world leaders of organic trade.

following correct procedure are often undercut by companies operating in that ‘grey-area.’

In order to even the playing field, it became apparent that we need to introduce mandatory organic standards so that our local businesses are given equitable opportunity.

Overseas markets are becoming more and more concerned with the origins and merits of the products they purchase, with many consumers seeking zero-carbon or low emission options. This bill ensures that customers are given adequate information about the goods they are purchasing which will ultimately give them confidence in our export markets.

Helen Stewart was known as a children's author and performance poet, but along came a pandemic which changed everything.

After having a few tough challenging moments about where to from here, she knew she wasn't ready to retire, and a friend suggested she get back onto the stage and entertain. It was time to step outside of the comfort zone and go for it. Age doesn't have to define us.

The show: - ' An at times 'saucy' comedy show about getting older and looking back at how our lives used to be before gravity took hold. With a script written and performed by Judi Billcliff, supported with lively music by the talented Helen Stewart, it's guaranteed to make you chuckle. From the heady heights of young love to the challenges of romance as mature women, it's real and genuine comedy about life.'

Home Zone Description;

We are already internationally recognised for our farming and agricultural abilities, so broadening our horizons to invest in sustainable and lucrative industries such as organics is a very logical next step – especially with our ambitious COP26 climate promises looming in the backs of our minds.

Focusing on core areas such as increasing consumer confidence and facilitating international trade, this bill provides a regulatory framework that will bring Aotearoa in line with global etiquette.

Previously, the New Zealand market has been characterised by low-cost producers and ambiguity surrounding the legitimacy of labels because of poor and confusing regulations.

This ‘race to the bottom’ model means that dedicated producers

In Aotearoa, organics is an evergrowing industry. Since 2006, its market value has expanded from $600 million to $723 million, with an average growth rate of 6.4% per year.

As this industry continues to rapidly develop, it is of the utmost importance that consumers can trust the products they’re consuming and that these products are produced and marketed to a correct and high standard.

I am very proud to be part of a community driven by such positive change. By supporting the Organic Products and Production Bill, we ensure that our local businesses like Raglan Food Co, Soul Food Farm and The Herbal Dispensary remain as certified leaders within the industry and we continue to solidify our primary sector as not only the best in the world, but the best for the world.
