elcome to the first update from the Raglan Wharf Upgrade Project team. Waikato District Council and Raglan Community Board have teamed up with Hamilton-based project management company Beca to run through the early stages of the project. The team has been very busy setting up the overall project from top to toe. The team has collaborated with a number of working groups from within the Raglan community to land on a selection of options that best fit the wharf and how Raglanites and visitors to Raglan use it. Representatives from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, who allocated $2.5 million towards the project, have even come over for a look-see as part of their tour of projects in the Raglan area. The updates below will give detail on the progress made so far and what lies ahead. At the forefront of our minds is getting the right result for all stakeholders in Raglan, keeping in budget and doing the work at the right time. Our local working groups have been great at identifying exactly what is needed. We are reviewing overall cost. One of the major steps we are taking right now is to review the project costs to try and prioritise spending to go to the right places. We are also aiming to carry out the work, so it reduces, or ideally avoids, impacting the businesses on the wharf. This, we think, will mean the vast majority of the physical work will be carried out during the low season over the winter months. Our consenting requirements may have an impact on this but for the time being there is much to do in the planning, engaging and procurement processes and we proceed with optimism. WORK PACKAGES Pontoon: The working group has got together on several occasions over the past few months and produced a preferred proposal. This is having a technical review prior to going out to get construction pricing

West Walkway Progress has been similar to the pontoon working group with a preferred proposal being issued from the working group. It is expected that this will take further development to produce a package of information ready to seek construction pricing. Wharf Substructure The Wharf substructure is regularly reviewed as a Waikato District Council asset. The most recent review was carried out this spring. This review has identified a number of areas that need maintenance to continue to extend the life of the wharf. After the exploratory work carried out by SP Divers, Waikato District Council has on guidance from a structural engineer decided to close the deck above water to vehicles. This affects commercial vehicles accessing the deck via the service lane on the Western side of the wharf. This precautionary measure and its effects have been discussed with affected commercial operators and the Coastguard. This will be in place until a targeted review has been completed. Health and Safety Updates The wharf has been going through a number of changes over time as it has changed its zoning from marine industrial to business use and its popularity with the local community and visitors has flourished. A number of challenges have been highlighted and these will be addressed via the project and via general upkeep that Council carries out on its assets. Whaingaroa Harbour Infrastructure Investigation This part of the project considers the long-term view of the harbour and how it will be used by our kids and possibly theirs as well. It is looking to link up locations of importance in the harbour that we can highlight for people to visit and enjoy as part of the Raglan area. This is the first of regular updates to project stakeholders. rganisers of Raglan’s Spirit of Christmas exhibition are going the extra distance this year to ensure there’s something for everyone – with a big name from out of town set to drop by on the middle weekend of the two-week show.

Everything on display at the Old School Arts Centre for the fortnight starting this Saturday is locally produced and plasticfree, Susanne emphasises. “And every year more new artists and ‘crafty’ Raglanites get involved,” she adds.

Santa’s visit from the North Pole on Saturday week will give parents the opportunity to take a photo of their youngsters with the man in red while doing a spot of Christmas shopping themselves, says exhibition co-ordinator Susanne Giessen-Prinz.

The artworks include pottery, plants, candles, jewellery, multimedia creations and edible goodies, all priced between $5 and $500. Suzanne’s message to Raglan residents is to “come along and be surprised at how creative and quirky our awesome arts and crafts community is”.

This will be the seventh annual staging of an exhibition which last year netted a record $9000-plus in sales.

This is money which “stayed” in the community, Susanne points out. She’s proud that money which might otherwise have been spent at the likes of The Base in Te Rapa has instead been retained locally. Much of this funding is poured back into the Old School Arts Centre’s new two-storey clayshed-cum-creative space, which is now awaiting final sign-off. The clayshed’s 18 artists also get some recompense for their donated works.

Gallagher scholarship recipient keen to help others through cyber security Sir William Gallagher is a long-standing supporter of the University of Waikato, and Hamilton-based Gallagher is one of the world’s leading technology innovators across multiple industries, including security. As the 2021 recipient, Leo will receive financial support and industry experience through a research project at Gallagher. From Raglan and educated at Raglan Area School and Hamilton Boys’ High School, Leo is currently in his final year of a Bachelor of Science, majoring in computer science. He says he’s deeply appreciative of the scholarship and looking forward to further exploring cyber security in postgraduate study. “My main area of interest is cryptovirology, the study of how cryptography is used to design malicious software. Cyber security specialists both respond to attacks as well as actively search for and remediate vulnerabilities in computer systems.”

Interview with photographer Felipe Queriquelli

The Chronicle had a chat to photographer Felipe, who has moved to raglan recently with his wife. I have admired your work and Chris Meeks gallery and so it is great to have made the connection now. Tell me how you came to reside in Raglan. Long story short, my wife and I had been planning this for while, preparing ourselves and our son in all sense to come to Aotearoa. We shifted in 2018 and saw the country after hiring a camper van and travelling around. We stopped in Raglan for surfing and visiting our friends, afterwards, we fell in love by the lost paradise. What is your background in terms of photography? The first time I felt any interest in photography was when we got together at family parties and a great uncle used a projector to show old family slides on the wall. I was fascinated with that apparatus and with the memories kept inside. When I was 18 I took a backpacking trip through South America and I carried a 35mm Olympus that I got from my mother. This trip was another milestone. I worked for several years as a cinematographer when I was enchanted to read about films, light set up theories and history of art. Since 2011 I’ve been working as a cinematographer and photographer for cinema productions and advertising. I recently completed my Master of Arts - Photography from Wintec. You have an exhibition on the 4th Dec. Tell us about why you decided to exhibit what we can expect? I've always believed that art must be shared with the public. Furthermore, the exhibition of this project in

Whaingaroa is a sign of gratitude, reciprocity and sense of community that I have towards this place. Almost 90% of the images were conceived here so it is fair that the exhibition is shown in Raglan. I hope the audience goes to the exhibition with no expectations, however, through this project, I wished to reach an unseen and uncertain space. The pictures depict 'alive places' or 'places in changing', basically we are in constant change all the time, and this change is always followed by uncertainties. How did you choose your local subjects and environments? First I started doing scouting location through Raglan and surroundings. After coming across cinematographic places I decided to speak with the owners who, in the vast majority of times, perfectly aligned with the proposal of the scene I had thought. In addition, other characters happened due to convenience or profiles. But, carefully, all the scenes were directed, that's why the photographic style is called Staged Photography. Give us the details for the exhibition and how people can get in touch and view your work. The opening exhibition will be on December 4th at 21 Cross St. at 5:30 pm. Raglan Area School one of two Waikato Schools to receive funding for roll growth A round 7,500 students are set to benefit from the Government’s $164 million investment to build new classrooms and upgrade schools around the country.

“The election delivered a clear mandate to accelerate our economic recovery and build back better. That’s why we are prioritising construction projects in schools so more young New Zealanders can learn in warm, dry and modern classrooms that are fit-forpurpose,” Education Minister Chris Hipkins said.

“This package will help create and sustain more than 3,000 jobs. The Ministry of Education and schools will be engaging with local builders, plumbers, carpenters, roofers, and electricians, who will in turn need to buy products and supplies from local stores.” Projects announced last week are part of the Government’s National Education Growth Plan and the National School Redevelopment Programme. $4 million for roll growth classrooms were announced at two Waikato schools:

“Altogether, $132 million has been allocated across schools in the North Island today. I look forward to announcing the allocation of the further $32 million across schools in the South Island tomorrow,” Chris Hipkins said last Thursday.

Stairmand and Hareb crowned Champions at King and Queen of the Point

ocal Raglan surfer Billy Stairmand was too good for his opponents this weekend being crowned King of the Point alongside New Zealand’s most successful surfer Paige Hareb (Tara) who was crowned Queen of the Point in the Women’s Division. The two surfers won the King and Queen of the Point presented by Backdoor and Quiksilver, the final national event of 2020. The day started out with a full storm and northwest winds before the wind swung more to the southwest and cleaned up the 1.5m waves along with the help afternoon full tide for the finals. Stairmand looked in control of the final from start to finish ending up with a 16.0 point heat total out of a possible 20. “It’s a hard one, I have grown up here all my life, I know the wave inside and out but I try to class myself as the underdog” Stairmand said about his win and favourite tag this weekend. “I like everyone talking about Cederman and Ricardo or Kehu and me just coming through the ranks and doing my thing. So it is good to get a win and a bit of money for the summer” added Stairmand. Stairmand’s performance was highlighted by an 8.33 point ride on his last wave, the highest of the final. “There were a few wide ones earlier that I had seen and that one was too wide for the others and it was good to open up on a big wave and do some good turns”. With the win, Stairmand takes out the truncated New Zealand Surf Series for 2020, his fourth consecutive title. “It is good to finish off with the series win after the Nationals then Covid then I tore my MCL and then only this comp. To finish with a win at home is good, I can’t wait for next year. My plan is to train hard out for the Olympics, that’s my top goal at the moment, head into the Nationals at Piha in January then see what comes after that. Finishing runner up in the final was another local in Taylor Hutchison. Hutchison finished with a 13.4 point heat total after running through a strong field of surfers on the final day. Dune Kennings (Piha) pushed Hutchison for the runner up position throughout the final but had to settle for third

Kraus was the dark horse of the event advancing through to the final after taking down top surfers including Kehu Butler (Mnt) and Ricardo Christie (Gis) over the weekend. Paige Hareb showed her experience to dominate the final of the Open Women’s Division and become the Queen of the Point. After playing catch up early on, Hareb notched up a pair of seven point rides for a 14.84 point heat total and what looked like a comfortable win. “I wouldn’t have been happy with anything less than winning this weekend so I am pretty happy with how it turned out” said Hareb. “It took a little while to find my feet to be honest, the first two heats I used a different board and I wasn’t happy with my surfing and it didn’t feel right so I changed boards for

the final and risked it and it paid off” added Hareb. Kehu Butler stormed out to a massive lead in the Under 20 Final with his first two rides in the first three minutes amassing a 14.3 point total. However, it was local surfer Caleb Cutmore that fought back with a pair of high seven point rides that saw him take the lead from Butler. It would only be a second bite at the cherry in the final stage of the heat that would seal it for Butler with a massive two turn combo that netted him an 8.44 point ride and the lead with less than a minute to go. Butler’s win left Cutmore in second with Raglan locals Kora Cooper in third and Josef Jungwirth in fourth. Kai Woolf led the final of the Under 20 Girls Division from start to finish after posting a 7.17 on the first wave of the final. Woolf finished with a 12.34 point heat total for a comfortable win. Brie Bennett (Rag)

fought back late in the heat with a 6.0 point ride but it was not enough to reach Woolf, Bennett finishing in second ahead of Aimee Brown (Grt Barrier) in third and Ava Henderson (Chch) in fourth. Finn Vette rode to the win in the Under 16 Boys Division in the final 10 seconds with a 6.5 point ride to jump into the lead and with that, the overall win for the 2020 New Zealand Grom Series. Vette had trailed local surfer Jayden Willoughby all final before his final wave pushing Jayden into second. Navryn Malone (Rag) finished in third place ahead of double finalist Kora Cooper (Rag) in fourth. aglan local and environmental advocate Tesh Randall was named a finalist in the Enterprise category at The 2020 Impact Awards for her inspirational work in the sustainable food sector. Randall co-founded Raglan Food Co in 2014 when she and her partner realised that they were lactose intolerant. They started experimenting with coconut yoghurt and then sold it to the community. Their hobby business quickly took off. Raglan Food Co now employs 24 staff and makes 68,000 jars of coconut yoghurt a month. It also serves as Aotearoa’s first carbon-zero certified yoghurt company. Guy Ryan, former Young New Zealander of the Year, Edmund Hillary Fellow and CEO of Inspiring Stories - the charity behind the Impact Awards -, thanked Randall for her leadership.

Book delivers double the trouble for local author

he trials and tribulations of twindom are the topic of local author Steve Horne’s memoir The Trouble with Twins. A teacher at Hamilton Boys’ High and former principal, storytelling has always been a big feature in Steve’s life and his work with students of all ages. The book begins with Steve’s earliest memories as an 18-month old toddler living with his family in Auckland. He says he and his identical twin brother Chris got into all sorts of trouble, and while most of the tales are comedic, some have a cautionary side to them. “A lot of the things we got up to were wrong, it was planned idiocy and we were leading each other astray.”

Like many twins they had their own special way of connecting and for the pair it was with body language and signals. “We would give each other a sign and we would know what it meant.” Told chronologically, from toddler, through to primary school and teenage years, the book’s last section covers the later years in the twin’s history, with Steve living in Raglan and Chris in Auckland. “Even though we live apart we are really close.” Both have had long careers as teachers, although Steve spent a year in the Warkworth forestry industry before following Chris to North Shore Teachers’ College. Many of the stories were told to his students to inspire their own writing and as a Waikato University School of Education guest lecturer in storytelling and story drama. “The more I told them (the stories) to various audiences the more I realised I should write them down and if I write them down, I will have enough to write a book,” he says. The 100 stories he has told over the years about his and Chris’s misadventures was whittled down to 73 for the book. This is a first novel for Steve; the memoir is as a real Kiwi story with two of the stories set in Raglan. And whilst the tales are true, he admits that they are definitely his version of the events and Chris may have other ideas about how the story unfolded. “He who has the pen has the power,” he laughs. Writing in long hand, Steve is grateful that he had wife Val to decipher, type up the stories, and to give her opinion. “She told me if she thought it was crap.”

Steve reckons there’s more tales to tell, he’s delving into his volunteer work for RATA, an education aid organisation, in Africa and India for inspirational stories of courage and kindness. The Trouble with Twins. was published by local publisher Ann Neville, edited by

in the way. The job of somatic exercise is to help the brain do its job properly. The brain controls the way we move, so if we want to change the way we move we need to work with the brain. Neuromuscular reprogramming is the name given to this approach. We work with the brain by feeding it new information, which in this case is information about how we are actually moving. We wake the brain up to what is actually going on. The problem for us is that when the brain learns a new movement pattern – eg how to ride a bike, how to sign one’s name, how to protect an injured arm, how to not be noticed, how to cope – it may be a healthy pattern or not. After a few weeks of repetition the brain sends the pattern code to older parts of the brain, for repetitive unconscious reﬂex activation. The pattern becomes an unconscious
