Locals win big at WD Sports awards
C
ongratulations to Billy Stairmand, who was awarded Waikato District Sportsman of the Year at the 2019 Waikato District Sports Awards last week.
As a seven-time New Zealand national surfing champ, pro surfer Billy Stairmand has illustrated what happens when talent meets dedication. An 8th placing at the ISA World Surfing Games this year has earnt him qualification into next year’s Olympics in an elite group of just 20 surfers. Consistently finishing first in New Zealand competitions and in the top ten at international level, Billy is a true star of the surfing scene. Winner of the Secondary School Sportswoman of the Year was local Brie Bennett. Brie dreams of competing in the world surfing league. She started surfing three and a half years ago and immediately fell in love with it. She is currently placed third on the Surfing New Zealand Under 16 girl’s rankings for 2019. Brie won a place in the International Grom Search which competed in Costa Rica this year. Also nominated from Raglan were surfing coach Larry Fisher, as well as young surfers Kora Cooper, Jayden Willoughby and Caleb Cutmore. Michelle Tarrant was also nominated as 'Adminstrator of the Year' and Raglan Point Boardriders as the 'Club of the Year'

Raglan Local circus booted from rugby grounds hopeful of new venue

FOR OVER 3’S USING THE 20 HOURS ECE SUBSIDY
aglan’s homegrown circus has been jumping through hoops to appeal its ordering off from the local rugby fields in Cross St – but now there’s smiley faces again as it looks to get its acts together at a different venue across town this summer. Circus Aotearoa clown and ringmaster Damian Gordon told the Chronicle on Monday he felt fairly confident his troupe would be able to erect their Big Top on Raglan Area School’s playing fields, pending a decision tonight by the board of trustees. Damian said the favourable discussions with principal Louisa Barham and others over the possible change of venue came after Waikato District Council refused a fortnight ago to allow the use of Raglan rugby grounds “due to continuous damage done by other events of a similar nature”. Council events officer Samantha Baker told Damian by email the decision was made after “a catch-up” with both the health and safety and open spaces teams. The refusal was based on the need to preserve the grounds, and having had to repair significant damage to them by another circus last summer. The other consideration was the time of year proposed, she said. “January is peak season for the community and the town becomes very congested. We are therefore unable to offer you the Papahua Domain as an alternative as it is kept free for holidaymakers and the community to use and enjoy.” Circus Aotearoa – established in 2008 by Damian and his wife Irene, who live on an 18-hectare bush block off Old Mountain Road – is set to play in town the second week of January before heading north on tour. Damian said they’d made it very clear when trying to book the Raglan rugby grounds that their circus had played there three times previously “without any issues”. In a follow-up email sent to various political and administrative quarters of the council to plead Circus Aotearoa’s case – an email which by early this week had elicited no response – Damian

However other circuses “with no vested interest in our country, people or organisations” had abused the parks they’d booked. “Due to their lack of care and respect in our communities we are (now) struggling to bring our show to as many Kiwi audiences as we would like,” he said. Circus Aotearoa has had an “unblemished track record, and “until this year we have never been refused a ground we have previously played on”. Damian suggested that instead of imposing a blanket ban on circuses, councils should put a stop to the use of machinery on
site and encourage safe working environments. It was important that Circus Aotearoa – as a social enterprise visiting a wide cross-section of communities, both rural and urban – found viable sites in provincial New Zealand. “Our objective is to make quality, live entertainment available to all sectors of our society and introduce different life options to people around the country,” he said. Circus Aotearoa also provided young people a platform from which to start their career as circus artistes, he added (Damian and Irene’s own son Matthias, who attended Raglan Area School, is currently with an Icelandic circus).
The council however was not alone in its anti-circus stance. Raglan Rugby Sports Club president Noel Barber revealed the club committee had also not wanted to have Circus Aotearoa use its grounds “due to the holes and ruts left from the last circus”. He said council spent $6000 to repair the damage. “The club is being proactive in looking after the sports turf,” he said. Club treasurer Val Rippey added: “We pay the lease on the grounds, council maintain the grounds. If (they are) damaged, it comes back on us.” Edith Symes

Coffee with a conscience roasted in Raglan
M
orning Glory Coffee is Raglan’s very own fair trade organic coffee, its coffee with a conscience roasted right here in Whaingaroa.
Paul Peterson is the roaster behind the brand and supporting ethical coffee production is a big part of the Morning Glory story. His journey to coffee roasting started eight years ago when a he suffered a brain aneurism that seriously affected his motor cortex and he spent close to four years fighting to gain his mobility back. It put a stop to a career in Sustainable Practice; he had been working as an environmental educator for Solscape and Xtreme Zero Waste for over 10 years and was North Island course cocoordinator for Otago Polytechnic’s Sustainable Practice post-grad diploma. On his journey to recovery, Paul started helping out with the coffee roasting at a local cafe. “I was looking to get back into the workforce and starting helping a friend roast coffee. It turned into a full time job.” When he first got into the coffee business, he didn’t think about the ethics of coffee bean farming; he
like coffee and the job, and it was work that he could physically do. “I didn’t really know about the environmental impact of coffee,” he says. Morning Glory is a small batch coffee roasting company and the beans Paul sources are certified fair trade and organic. Not only are the farmers paid a fair price but they are farming without the aid of pesticides, herbicides and chemicals using traditional methods of cultivation. Traditionally grown in tropical and subtropical areas often in rugged mountainous areas, coffee trees naturally grow under a shaded canopy of trees. However, due to increased market demands in recent years, sun cultivation has replaced traditional methods. This has meant massive tracts of deforestation has occurred to grow coffee in rows as a monoculture with no canopy, and this has also meant the necessary addition of fertiliser to increase the yield. Added to the environmental impacts of coffee faming are the economic implications of low prices for coffee farming families, increased child and forced labour, and farming families unable to invest in farm improvements
Morning Glory coffee owner Paul Peterson with his son Raph Lecourtois-Peterson ultimately forcing many away from farming that has been practiced for generations. As Paul says, “first world coffee causes third world issues”. It was these dilemmas that turned him towards fair trade, organic coffee and ultimately the start of Morning Glory. “I’m trying to produce really nice coffee for beautiful people who know about where their coffee comes from,” he says. And this means coffee that comes from some of the most pristine equatorial rain forest and jungle on the planet from farms that
are high in biodiversity and natural beauty. Paul knows that these farmers treat both the environment and their workers with the utmost respect and care. “I want my customers to know that they have contributed to making a better world and that they are part of the solution.” Coming from a sustainable gardening background, Paul knew compostable packaging was also going to be a key component of Morning Glory’s ethical business model. Sourced in Hamilton, Paul says the packaging is designed to compost in a home composter.
The Morning Glory range includes an original full caffeine blend, a mid-strength and a decaf. Paul says the decaf has proven to be a popular seller as it still has the full flavour of the coffee with all the anti-oxidant benefits, but without the caffeine hit that can cause havoc for some people. Janine Jackson Morning Glory is sold locally at Solscape (by the cup and by the bag), Raglan Area School (by the cup), WOK, Gate to Plate Farm Shop in Whatawhata, and in Hamilton at Bagels Baby and Organic Nation. Hartstone shared top-billing with equestrian greats at prestigious event
R
aglan horsewoman Jody Hartstone was top-billing alongside global great Sir Mark Todd and Olympic showjumper Bruce Goodin at the internationally-celebrated EQUITANA Auckland last week. The Waikato equestrienne is well-respected as a trainer, dressage rider, an educator and a breeder. Jody returned to the biennial event as a Grand Prix dressage competitor, a clinician sharing her equitation science knowledge and as part of the inaugural New Zealand Warmblood Association supported sport horse auction. The auction attracted 13 superblybred horses, ranging in age from yearlings and up and piqued the interest of offshore buyers as well as others from both sides of the Tasman. Like so many Kiwi youngsters, Jody started her love of horses through Pony Club. She and a few other horse-mad mates re-

established the Te Uku branch of the Hamilton Pony Club and the rest is history. Since then, she has firmly established herself both on and off shore for her talent and ability. Through a series of coincidences she got a breeding stallion, starting competing full time in dressage and took Belmont Golden Boy right through to the Prix St George title at HOY. “He won every championship there was to win in his final two years.” She twice won HOY Grand Prix titles with Whisper and Landioso and now has her fourth Grand Prix stallion Ali Baba, a Lusitano who certainly has his own fan club around the country. But it was her HOY crown with 22-year-old Landioso that was probably her most treasured victory. “It was his fifth and final go. That win for him was a beautiful swansong and a lovely send off for such a special horse.” Her passion for equitation science sees her in demand all over the world. “It’s the science behind how animals learn and I

One of the foundation cornerstones of EQUITANA Auckland is education, and this year there were 40 of some of the
best in the world – including Jody – sharing their knowledge about various disciplines, horse health, showing tips, how to get the best from your gear, nutrition for both horse and rider, horsemanship, veterinary advice and so much
more. Each of the four days was filled with 25 sessions across the arenas. EQUITANA, a four-day family fun-focussed event, was held at the ASB Showgrounds in Auckland.

ne of the biggest fields in recent history recently gathered at the newly upgraded Raglan Golf Club's course on Te Hutewai Road. The course was in magnificent condition for the Waikato Veterans' Tournament which attracted 104 players. Ngaruawahia Golf Club's team took major honours on the day claiming the Waikato River Shield. The home team of Raglan put up a noteworthy performance to finish runner-up. Play was preceded by morning tea followed by an appreciated lunch at the end of play - all provided and served by club members. Feedback on recent improvements to the club's course was extremely positive.

The course has transformed, with the removal of the resident flock of sheep, from a farm to a park thanks to the careful grooming of the fairways and greens by a dedicated team. Hours of paid and voluntary effort has gone into the massive improvements to both the course and the clubrooms and surrounds. The next tournament on the club calendar is the annual LJ Hooker Christmas Tournament on Saturday,December 7 featuring nine and 18-hole divisions for men and women. The 18-hole tees-off at 10am and 9-hole at 11.15am. There are prizes for gross and stableford, nearest-the-pin, longest drive. There's also the chance to win a novelty prize. T
his week we catch up with long standing Raglan Osteopath Deborah Attard-Manche who is on the move. How long have you been practising Osteopathy in Raglan now? I was one of the original Osteopaths who moved to Raglan - I arrived in 1999. I was offered a job with Oliver Russell and Alex Jones at The Osteopathic Clinic when they were based on Grey Street in Claudelands. We also worked at the bottom of Bow Street next to the Maori Wardens which is now the George’s Beach Club cafe. How about in Raglan? How did you come to settle here? In the mid 1980’s I travelled around the world with my back pack and I spent 6 months travelling around New Zealand, mostly hitch hiking and topping up the coffers fruit picking and I always promised myself that I would return. So when I was offered the job many years later I happily packed up my London life and I travelled through to Hamilton. On arrival I went into shock as Hamilton in 1999 was culturally, spiritually and environmentally a very different world from living in South London which was very colourful and vibrant with a melting pot of nationalities, local markets and lifestyles! Thankfully I found Raglan and a beautiful community, a magnificent ocean, beach, maunga and a gentle but fun life and 20 years later Raglan is still my home. Where do you operate from? I recently moved in April from the Matapihi Gallery on Bow Street as sadly it was closed down and I have taken up residence at the Herbal Dispensary at 6 Wallis Street in a beautiful hut in the garden - I realise I haven’t let Raglan know about this move! My business name is Karioi Osteopaths and I work on Tuesdays and Fridays. I also work in Hamilton on Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Waikato Osteopathic Centre at 78 Maeroa Road, Maeroa. Do you have an area of speciality? My main area of speciality is Cranial Osteopathy but I also work with various other techniques which include soft tissue, massage, articulation, myofascial release and visceral. Cranial does not mean we only work with the head - this modality works with the whole body. I help to create space in the body and to assist with reducing pain patterns. Ultimately

Oi... keep an eye out for nesting birds this summer K
arioi Project’s Volunteer and Communications Manager Bexie Towle says, “Seabirds are, ironically, hard to see. But keep an eye out for a new kind of seabird hanging out between Ngarunui beach and Manu Bay this summer.” Kids from the Karioi Project’s after school programmes have created wooden birds and signs to make it easier for locals and visitors to 'see' when seabirds are nesting nearby. Royal New Zealand Air Force volunteers visiting Raglan helped install the signs last week. Grey-Faced Petrel (aka Oi) and Little Blue Penguin (Korora) chicks are dotted along our coastline, tucked into underground burrows, spending weeks alone while their parents are out at sea foraging for food. These chicks are incredibly defenceless against predators and even adult seabirds have a tough time fighting off predators. Karioi, in the past, would have been a seabird mountain, inundated with several types of seabirds breeding from the summit to the sea. The species that still survive here, Oi and Korora, would be lost from Karioi if it wasn’t for the efforts of our community in predator control

and responsible pet management. “Already, this year, we’ve lost chicks and adult breeding birds to ferret and dog predation. A penguin found last week near Manu Bay was autopsied by Massey University which confirmed it was killed by a dog. Post-mortem reports also confirmed a ferret killed several adult breeding Oi earlier this spring.” Bexie says that while several seabirds have died this year, there is still hope. “We have 12 Oi chicks that, fingers crossed, will fledge around Christmas. This is an increase from the last two years, when we had seven chicks fledge each year. Before that, due to predation, we didn't have any surviving chicks for several years. So we're doing really well!" The Karioi Project team is asking dog owners to keep their dogs on a leash in Bryant Reserve, at the south end of Ngarunui beach and between Manu Bay and Ngarunui Beach for the next couple of months. “Combined with our network of almost 2,000 predator traps, leashing dogs will give our Raglan chicks the best chance of survival. When all the chicks have safely fledged, we’ll let everyone know and take the signs down until next year’s breeding season.” Thank you to everyone, especially dog owners for supporting this ‘leash on til Christmas’ campaign.
Karioi Project's Volunteers prepare to place 'Oi' awareness signs in summer hot spots

Great work Whāingaroa! We are consistently diverting between 75% and 80% of waste from landfill - one of the highest diversion rates in NZ and something to be super proud of. To help continue these fantastic diversion rates through the busy summer please follow these guidelines

With Christmas just around the corner we thought we would plant a little reminder that PRESENCE > PRESENTS. The greatest gift we can give each other is attention, love and quality time. We are constantly prompted to buy and consume, but much more during this holiday season. Our consumption is off the chain and as a society, our wasteful lifestyles are ruining this planet. New Zealanders currently generate about 734 kg of waste each per year, estimated to be among the highest in the developed world. That amount has increased by around 20 percent over the past three years. Wrapping, useless gifts, plastic trees, decorations are in abundance in the lead-up to Christmas, but are chucked in a landfill once the fun is over. We’ve all seen the aftermath. Not to mention, we all have more than enough STUFF. Raglan however, is leading the way on reducing waste. It's time for us to consider our carbon emissions too. Think about what you can do differently in your daily transport options. Consider riding your bike this summer instead of jumping in your car. Save money and time not searching for a park! With every dollar we spend, we vote for the kind of world we want to live in. So let’s buy better this time around - or not at all.
1. One crate for glass (lids off, no broken glass please). 2. One crate for plastics 1 – 7, aluminium and tin cans (wash, squash, lids off). 3. Cardboard boxes, no more than 5 per household, flattened in or on top of your crates. 4. Paper, tied or in a box. 5. Pre-paid bags over 15kgs will be left behind.
XZW is stoked that we can keep the food-waste collection service going for everyone in our community. Here’s a few tips for summer to keep our system running smoothly: Make your bin clearly visible on the kerbside i.e. not behind recyclables, rubbish bags or vegetation. Use the request slip at the end of your compostable bags to get a replacement pack from the collection crew. Put your food-waste bin out every week to prevent it getting smelly in summer. To avoid damage, take your bin in after the collection. There will be a $15 charge for replacement bins. Food-waste and recycling bins belong to the house. Ask your landlord to replace missing equipment. Home com-posters, please keep the food-waste equipment at the house. You can use the food-waste service at any time for items like citrus, meat and as a backup e.g. when your compost is full. If your bin is missed, or you are going away on your collection day, the XZW 'EMERGENCY’ food-waste drop-off bin at the Greenwaste Area is available. This is not a regular drop off facility - please use the kerbside service. Thanks to local EnviroMatters sponsors:

he Waitetuna Wind Farm Trail Run was held Saturday the 23rd November. The event is organized and run by the Waitetuna School PTA as a fundraiser.
There were a record 350 registrations for Waitetuna's third Windfarm Trail Run on Julie and Hamish Ormond's farm. A great fundraiser - this year for a new playground at Waitetuna School. Many people set goals for this trail run, including one man from America (in NZ for only a few weeks) who is in remission from cancer and his goal was to do the 21km Trail Run to the wind turbines and back. The event includes three trail lengths, 21km, which passes through some of the Te Uku wind turbines, 10km, and 5km. Margery O'Connell, Principal of Waitetuna school, was pleased with the number of entries and the success of the day. o provide us with a sense of what we can expect this year the Chronicle caught up with one of this years performers, Artimis Goed. Tell us about what to expect from Whaingaroa Youth Movement for this years dance performance. This years dance is going to be a lot of fun, with really cute narratives all throughout the dances. There will be varying styles of contemporary dance, from upbeat, to
more mellow. We've got some really quirky dances, with really unique props and ideas, almost verging on physical theatre at some moments, which is really fun! How did the idea originate? The idea came from the Dr Seuss book 'Oh The Places You'll Go', which is a really sweet story about stepping into the big wide world, which a lot of us are doing at the end of this year. The book means a lot to Patti and has come to mean a lot to all of us. How long have you been preparing and what's involved? We've been preparing for a couple of months now, since the tail end of last term. Since the dancers range from 5 to 18 there are going to be really interesting contrasts in style and feel throughout the show. The older groups are really involved in the choreography which is one of my favourite things about Whaingaroa Youth Movement, the dances become well and truly ours. Since it's going to be in the reserve this year we're trying to make everything as big as possible, and almost create sets with our movement and bodies. How long have you been dancing with Patti and is this your last year? I started dancing with Patti in 200. I was only four in my first show! This is, sadly, my last year. I wouldn't want to end the 13 years I've danced here with any other dance! What do you personally like about your weekly dance session and belonging to the movement? I genuinely don't know if I can sum up how much I love dancing with Patti and my group! Most of us have grown up dancing with each other and I just love how much we can all be ourselves and bring our own creative tastes to the table. There truly is something for everyone. Being involved in the choreography process has also been just amazing, it really makes us think outside of the box and get acquainted with each others styles and minds. Whaingaroa Youth Movement has been a crucial part of my childhood and teenage years and I feel that it has genuinely played a part in shaping me, and my peers, into the people we are today.
