Workshops encourage local writing and creativity
Saturday 4 October, author, musician, and lyricist Lynne Wilkins held her workshop on ‘Creative business: Earning Your Living by Doing What You Love’. This is a popular theme for Lynne, who in her business life is passionate about supporting creative people to make a viable living from their art, and has run iterations of this workshop throughout the Waikato for several years.
Although only attended by a small crew, Lynne is planning to run the workshop again soon to enable those who were unable to attend the first time due to sickness to come along.
Raglan Inkspillers Writers Collective was set up in 2019 to help raise the profile of writers and the written and spoken word in Whaingaroa Raglan and surrounding areas. A 2021 grant from Waikato District Council was used to develop an Inkspillers website, which the group plans to use as a platform for sharing local writers’ work and word-related events.
Raglan
designer Matt Kambic.
The workshop is aimed at anyone who’s thought they’d like to write a children’s
book, but hasn’t known where or how to start. It will also suit those who have started their writing journey, but need a bit of encouragement or tips to keep going. Topics covered will include formats and genres, tips for developing a strong plot (that children will love), the all-important relationship between pictures and words, and options for getting your work out there, via traditional publishing routes or otherwise.
Writing for Children is the second workshop run by Inkspillers this spring. On
The group also hopes its workshops will become an annual thing, encouraging local writing connections, and boosting community access to creative skills. Inkspiller members work across a wide range of literary genres, and include poets and playwrights, song writers, memoirists and contemporary fiction writers, all keen to share their skills.

Wins for father and son at Aotearoa Māori Surfing Titles
TeTai Tokerau hosted Aotearoa’s top Māori surfers this Labour Weekend with a big contingent of surfers from around the country heading north. The Aotearoa Māori Surfing Titles was held at Ahipara with the two-day event commencing on Saturday 22nd October.
The Friday night powhiri set the tone for a good day of surfing on Northland’s famed point breaks on Saturday, October 22, where the country’s top Maori surfers pushed through their preliminary rounds at the Aotearoa Maori Surfing Titles.
The event went mobile around the points of Shipwreck Bay to the Mukerau Point for the day where surfers enjoyed an awesome day at the beach despite the easterly winds creating a side chop across the strong 1.0m waves.
After a delayed start to the day, allowing for the full tide to recede, the rangatahi got the day under way before the Open Men’s Division and senior men’s divisions were contested.
Ngati Awa surfer Levi Stewart’s dream as a twelve year old was finally realised at the competition after winning the 2022 Aotearoa Maori Surfing Titles for the first time and joining defending champion Natasha Gouldsbury (Te Atiawa) as winners of the premier Tane and Wahine Divisions.
Stewart matched up against two of his heroes and young local Northland surfer Te Kauwhata Kauwhata (Nga Puhi) in the final with Chris Malone (Mahaki) placing second, Ricardo Christie (Nga Puhi) in third and Kauwhata in fourth.
“Ric is my biggest hero, I have grown up watching him surf, so to have him in the final and get one over him, I feel very lucky, same with Bugsy (Chris Malone). To surf against all those guys, I’m very lucky,” said Stewart.
Over in the open women's division Gouldsbury took the win over daughter-mother combo Indi-Lee Ruddell (Te Atiawa) and Renee Ruddell (Te Rarawa) with Kiri Binnersley (Ngai Porou) placing fourth.
In the senior men’s divisions, Chris Malone (Mahaki) made up for his runner-up finish in the Open Tane by winning both the Over 35 and 45 Men’s Divisions.
Natasha Gouldsbury (Te Atiawa) and Navryn Malone (Mahaki) were victorious in the Under 18 Divisions claiming the Surfline scholarships. The scholarships comprise of $500 cash each, a session with The Art of Surfing and becoming a Surfline Ambassador for the year. Malone was a standout all weekend but none more so than in the final where he posted a 19.37 point heat total out of 20 points for two huge lefthanders that he belted big combo’s on.

Busy Labour Weekend for Raglan Arts Weekend
from Raglan Arts WeekendThe diversity and standard of Raglan’s art scene really came to the fore this Labour Weekend, with the 12th Raglan Arts Weekend finally happening after a two year hiatus.
Thousands of visitors were treated to the very best of Whaingaroa’s
talent
Tens of thousands of dollars were spent on art this weekend and most visitors commented on the surprising variety and excellent quality of work. We can be very proud of our community for establishing itself as a talented artistic hub with an Arts Weekend that is
reputation
year.
A message from Raglan Police
In the past two weeks in the Raglan area, we had 30 reported incidents. Amongst these were :
• Five Unlawful Interference or Thefts from cars
• Two Burglaries
• Three Family Harm
• Four Traffic Crashes – including 1 vehicle impounded for Sustained Loss of Traction
• Two Intentional Damage – including Graffiti
• Three Common Assaults
With the increase of visitors to town, please be mindful of where you park your vehicles. Double parking causes traffic flow restrictions. This is most evident outside the bakeries, and please keep the designated disability car parks free for those who NEED to use them.
Sustained Loss of Traction continues to occur within the town and outside of it. With more people out and about, there is more chance that one of these vehicles will crash into an innocent motorist or pedestrian. A video or photos of these offending vehicles can help us to get the vehicle impounded for 28 days. We are pleased that the community has helped us to prosecute several drivers, who have subsequently lost their licences and had their vehicles impounded because of this dangerous practice. We encourage you
to safely record these incidents and report them to us.
Thefts from cars and cars being stolen has increased markedly over the last few months. If you can, it is always best to park your vehicles overnight in your driveway instead of out on the roadside. If you do have to park your vehicle out on the road, we would advise under lighting. Take everything out of your cars at night and LOCK YOUR CARS.
A serious dog attack occurred at Wainamu Beach on Sunday 23/10/22 in which two dogs and the dog’s owner all suffered serious dog bites from a large Rottweiler dog. If anyone has any information on this incident, please contact Police on 105 or Animal Control at Waikato District Council.
We would encourage you all to use the 105 non-emergency reporting line to report any lost or found property, any historic offending or historic suspicious activity. 111 emergency line is for suspicious activity that it happening now and needs to be attended now, danger to life or property now, or offenders are still at the scene.
Enjoy the warmer weather and longer daylight hours. Enjoy family and friends. Drink responsibly and don’t drive after drinking, Be considerate of others as things get busier in town. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination. Take a deep breath.
Happy summer from us at Raglan Police.
Farout, a holiday home in the harbour
By Janine Jackson“And we’ve got some of the best water views in Raglan,” she enthuses.
One of the best things about having a houseboat, the couple reckon, is the ability to change the scenery and escape the wind direction whenever they decide.
“It doesn't take much water to float in, so you can get into quite shallow areas. Because it’s designed to sit on the bottom and not do any damage, and then the tide comes back in and you’re floating again,” David says.
Farout had spent 17-years with her first owner on the Awanui River up north before Deb and David bought her earlier this year.
Powered by two 50 horse power motors, she’s not built for speed but she’s top-notch when it comes to the comforts of home.
“It’s great because it just putts along and you don't spill your beers,” Deb laughs
You might be forgiven if you thought there was another Wahine Moe in town.
Moored out in the harbour opposite Cox Bay is the older sister to Raglan’s beloved harbour cruise boat Wahine Moe is Farout, the houseboat belonging to Deborah and David Bunyard.
Made by the same boat builder as the Wahine Moe, and almost a twin apart from a size difference, Farout is Deb and David’s floating bach.
“This is our holiday house in Raglan with a little bit of a difference,” Deb says.
And with the prices of housing in Raglan, it was certainly a lot cheaper option.
“You wouldn't even buy the land for a bach for what we paid for the boat and the cost of getting it brought down here. And it has got everything you need for a comfortable holiday.”
At 4.9m wide x 12m long, she’s two metres shorter than the Wahine Moe; but the two-bedroom vessel with open plan kitchen and living, shower and toilet, front and rear decks plus an extra-large deck upstairs for entertainment is stylish and comfortable.
Deb is thrilled that the combination of wind turbine and solar power her coffee machine and all the other necessities to be a home away from home.
The couple have also had an extra septic holding tank installed so they can reduce the number of stops required to the wharf.
Not designed to be an ocean faring vessel, she did take to the open seas for several days to get her from Awanui via the Houhora Harbour and along the coast to Opua, where she was hoisted onto a truck and driven by road to Raglan.
“Transporting her out of the water and down to Raglan certainly had us nervous,”
Deb says.
“It had to be craned up beside the silos and that was the scary part watching her hanging in the air on a super windy day.”
The pair say they have felt very welcomed to Raglan and haven’t had any negative feedback – from the coastguard lending them a trailer to launch Farout into the harbour, to the support from Barlow and the Wahine Moe crew and just the general curiosity about the boat that has had locals stop them for a chat.
“Everyone has just gone that extra mile and people have given us solutions, advice and answers to any questions we’ve had,”
Deb says.
“We are so looking forward now to some real summer weather.
Raglan Junior Surf Life Saving Club update
RSLC will be kicking off again on Sunday 6 November at 10am at the Clubhouse and the Club is taking registrations right now for members aged 5-14. There are many benefits to participating in Junior Surf. Our members learn about surf safety, reading conditions and managing themselves in our West Coast environment. If they can handle a beach such as Raglan, they will be safe on any beach around New Zealand. We have multiple pathways they can follow ranging from general surf safety and fun activities, opportunities to compete in regional and national events for those who have a passion for competition and for those who are looking towards a potential career or way to give back to the community there is the Lifeguard pathway.
The club always welcomes new members and as part of Junior Surf, families become club members. If you have always wondered what the view looks like from the clubrooms, here’s your opportunity!
The Junior Surf programme works through a framework to allow students to progress both within the season and over the years with the ultimate goal of being Surf Lifeguards themselves. Once you reach 12 years old, you can join the Rookies programme which fine tunes your Lifeguard skills, allows you to spend time on patrol and prepares you for your Surf lifesaving award. You will also have the opportunity to take part in the annual Northern Region Rookie challenge.
You can register now at www. raglansurflifesaving.org.nz/members or email Travis at juniorsurf@raglansurflifesaving. org.nz
Raglan Surf Club provides free training for people aged 14 and over who are keen to train as lifeguards and to commit to patrolling on the beach over the summer season. This runs from Labour weekend until Easter and lifeguards generally patrol for 1 weekend per month. Lifeguarding is an excellent opportunity to gain new skills, meet new people, have fun, get fit and give something really important back to the community. There are even opportunities to get paid over the peak season if you reach minimum requirements at interviews.
Raglan Surf Lifesaving Club (RSLC) is looking forward to another fun, action packed and inspiring season of Junior Surf.
After having some activities limited by Covid, we are now looking towards rolling out our full programme, including competition events on the beach and in the pool both in Raglan and at other beaches, the Raglan raft race, attending the Anzac parade, having a float in the New Year’s Eve parade, Overnight stay, movie and fun night at the clubhouse and many more.
Junior Surf has an amazing team of coaches, all who are qualified lifeguards and we also have a supportive parent community helping out and taking on roles and learning new skills such as Competition Management, Surf Official, Coach or even becoming Patrol Support or Active lifeguard themselves. Families are actively encouraged to participate and to support the children both in the sea and on the beach.
Pre-requisites for being able to register for the training are:
• Age 14 and over
• Ability to swim 400m in under 9 minutes
• Confidence in ocean swimming and waves
• Strong commitment to being a lifeguard

There are legal procedural requirements that must be met and any disciplinary action must be lawfully justified. When the misconduct occurs outside of work, things get even trickier. With the silly season soon upon us and people starting to wind down after a busy year, now is usually the time when bad or impaired judgment starts to arise. The question many employers often ask is whether they can do anything to address employee’s bad behaviour if it did not occur at work but in the employee’s personal life? The short answer is, like most things, it depends on the circumstances.
The starting point is that employees have the right to privacy and to be able to live their lives as they choose outside of work. However, when bad behaviour in an employee’s personal life can in some way be connected to their job or could impact their employer’s business or reputation, an employer is entitled to get involved and take necessary action. If there is no real link between the misconduct and the employer’s business and the employee has just done something an employer does not approve it, this is unlikely to justify disciplinary action.
There are a few questions employers must ask when deciding whether they
• Is the conduct incompatible with the job the employee does?
• Does the conduct impact other employees?
• Could the conduct impact on the employer’s trust and confidence in the employee?
If after asking these questions an employer can determine there is a link between the employee’s behaviour and their employment, then an employer is entitled to commence a disciplinary process. Like with misconduct that occurs at work, it is important the disciplinary process is fair and follows any prescribed procedural requirements that are set out in either the employee’s employment agreement or employer’s policies.
Employers must always ensure the process and outcome is fair and reasonable in the circumstances. The specialist employment law team at DTI Lawyers can assist businesses in relation to all employment matters, including advice on disciplinary processes and whether an employer can take action for misconduct occurring outside of work.

Raglan Outdoor Bowls Club update
Meet Mac, he presented to our small animal vet Rolando in our Raglan clinic. He had an acutely sore eye which he had been trying to rub at during the day.
As you can see he had a foreign body attached to her eye surface which is called the cornea. Mac was sedated and had local anaesthetic applied to his eye which allowed gentle removal of the foreign body it was firmly attached and required gentle removal with a scalpel blade. It was a small piece of vegetation or grass.
After removal of the foreign body a stain was applied to the eye which showed a small corneal ulcer (scratch to the eye surface) where the grass had been removed. In these cases a topical antibiotic and lubricant drop are applied to the eye three times a day. Mac was also sent home with some pain relief and will be checked next week to ensure his ulcer has healed.
Burgers 'n Bowls day held October 16, had over 40 visitors give the game a go, with some showing real aptitude. Twilight Bowls kicks off on Tuesday 8 November at 5.30 pm, with play starting at 6 pm.
Find your own team of three or just come along and we'll put you in a team.
The Bowling Club also had a person cause damage to our astro green by racing his remote-control car around after bowlers had left following their roll-up.
As we are getting closer to summer it’s important to check your animals for any evidence of grass seeds, if your pets eyes are sore they should always be examined by a vet.

What’s being said about our Property Management service?
12:00pm - 12:45pm
can not speak highly enough of the service offered by the Raglan Rentals team. They are always extremely prompt with answering any questions, the inspection reports were comprehensive and any maintenance needed on the house was efficiently communicated with a range of quotes from which to expedite remedial repairs. Their knowledge of the rental law and regulations gave me confidence that we were meeting all requirements and I knew the property was in good hands. They went above and beyond to ensure things ran smoothly for us as homeowners including sourcing lightbulbs that were not locally available and hanging curtains. I can not recommend the team highly enough and if we are in the situation again to place our house on the rental market we will certainly be back to place in their professional care.

Waikato District Council’s Provisional Local Alcohol Policy is open for appeals
Waikato District Council adopted its Provisional Local Alcohol Policy (LAP) on 6 October 2022 and is now subject to appeal. An appeal can only be made by those who submitted as part of formal consultation on the draft LAP as well as the NZ Police and Medical Officers of Health who have a statutory right to appeal.
The only ground on which the provisional LAP can be appealed against is that it is unreasonable in the light of the object of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 (the Act). The object of the Act is that ‘the sale, supply, and consumption of alcohol should be undertaken safely and responsibly; and the harm caused by the excessive or inappropriate consumption of alcohol should be minimised’.
An appeal made under section 81 of the Act must be made by sending a notice of appeal to: Post: The Secretary of the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority Tribunals Unit SX11159 Wellington
Email: ARLA@justice.govt.nz
The notice must: be made in writing; and state the full legal name, address for service, telephone number and any email address of the appellant; and
• state the element of the provisional LAP appealed against and state why the element is unreasonable in the light of the object of the Act; and
• be accompanied by the prescribed fee ($517.50 including GST); and be accompanied by a copy of the submission that the appellant made on the draft LAP that became the provisional LAP.
Either before or immediately after the notice is sent to the Secretary of the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority, a copy must be sent to Waikato District Council.
Appeals must be made to the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority by 18 November 2022.
The provisional LAP can be viewed at Council offices or on Council’s website https://shape.waikatodistrict.govt.nz/local-alcohol-policy. A copy can also be obtained by calling 0800 492 452.
