If we eliminate these factors, our roads will be so much safer for all of us. Boy racer activity out at Manu Bay and Te Mata is causing a lot of concern for Police and for residents who are subjected to the danger and annoyance of this behaviour. The last thing anyone wants is for someone to get hurt – either a young driver, an innocent member of the public, or a resident who decides to take matters into their own hands. This should be an immediate 111 call to Police with as much information as possible given regarding offending vehicles. Cell phone video recordings are very helpful as well. Nominations open for Raglan Community Board by-election

ominations opened on Wednesday 15 September for an extraordinary vacancy on the Raglan Community Board following the death of the Board’s deputy chair, Bob MacLeod, last month. His death, more than 12 months out from the next election in October 2022, means by law the Waikato District Council must hold a new election process. Nominations will be open until noon on Wednesday 13 October.

The Raglan Electoral Roll is available for inspection at either the Raglan or Ngāruawāhia offices through the nomination period. If there are two or more candidates for the vacancy, voting papers will be posted to all eligible electors from Wednesday 17 November. Voting will close at noon on Thursday 9 December with the final results expected to be available that afternoon. Nadine Simsar hopes to garner local support for her proposal for an eco-village on Wainui Rd.

n ecovillage looks set to sprout on a prime 23-hectare piece of ruralzoned land bordering the start of Upper Wainui Rd if one woman on a mission can attract buy-in from residents, collaborators and investors. Having already secured the land and presented the project to the Waikato District Council, Nadine Simsar now hopes to garner local support at an expression of interest meeting to be held next Wednesday night at the Old School Arts Centre. Similar in nature to Earthsong – an innovative cohousing community that mushroomed in west Auckland well over a decade ago now – the Raglan Ecovillage Project would ideally have between 30 to 50 sustainable ecohouses for residents who believe shared living is the way of the future, Nadine told the Chronicle. It’s all about coming together for the good of both land and people, she says. Nadine envisages a community in which families live and work on site – creating their own livelihoods – without the need to commute. She’s quick to point out her proposal is not for a commune, where people live less independently and share income. Rather the idea is to build affordable houses with a “common” one in the middle – like at Earthsong – where some meals,

a laundry and a toolshed for instance are used by everybody in the settlement. The ultimate goal is “shared governance” of community facilities. Nadine says the homes would be as off-grid as possible so as not to rely on council infrastructure, and residents would focus on regenerative living which is more than sustainable. She describes it as a cooperative approach that “dynamically renews all life”. There would be the potential to partner with other establishments such as Xtreme Zero Waste in its consideration of a community-owned solar farm, and with educational organisations like Waikato University to offer on-site learning of practices like permaculture. “I want this to be a flagship project,” Nadine insists. Her hope is that Raglan ecovillage will demonstrate a model of integrated-systems development that will become an example of how to live in a sustainable and regenerative way, and “inspire the people of New Zealand”. Nadine – who still speaks with a hint of a French accent despite having left her homeland two decades ago – is a relatively recent arrival in town from Auckland. It was while living there that she became inspired by the Earthsong eco-neighbourhood, which has operated successfully on an urban-zoned site in Ranui since 2008. She says she used to run a yoga studio in Howick but needed a change, so set

her sights on Raglan with the intention of finding suitable land and setting up a community-led ecovillage. “Raglan seemed like a cool community, more in tune than Howick,” she laughs of her ambitious idea. But Nadine insists it’s no pipe dream. She already has an architect, a planner and engineers on the job and “we are looking (now) for passionate, hands-on people to join us to make this flagship project our reality”. The project also fits well with the council’s long term plan for “liveable, thriving and connected communities”, she says. While Earthsong is the first cohousing community in New Zealand combining environmentally sustainable approaches to housing and lifestyle with well-established community decision-making processes, similar projects have since sprouted up in Whanganui and Dunedin. Just 200 years ago, seabirds filled every ecological niche on Karioi from the beach and coastal forests to the mountain-top, and every year thousands of seabirds flocked to this mountain to raise their chicks. Now, only two remnant species, the ōi /grey-faced petrel and little blue penguin (LBP) make Karioi their home. Less than 40 breeding pairs of ōi and only a handful of LBPs attempt to raise their chicks each year. The grey-faced petrel is one of the few burrowing petrel species that still breed on the mainland.

t this time of year, in Whāingaroa, seabirds like the Ōi / Grey Faced Petrel are hatching out of their eggs. From now until the chick fledges in December, the parents work in pairs visiting the burrow site every week or so to feed their chick. Similar to the Ōi, our community has been working together to restore biodiversity with incredible volunteer and local neighbourhood

support. It's amazing to see everyone coming together to bring back populations of seabirds and forest birds. In the past decade, volunteers from the Karioi Project have trapped over 18,500 introduced predators using over 2,000 traps. This work has resulted in some significant conservation gains, with at least 30 Ōi chicks and several Little Blue Penguin chicks fledging in the last four years. We've also got

Kererū / NZ Pigeons swooping along the coastline and Korimako / Bellbird singing in Manu Bay. And endangered species such as Pekapeka / Long-Tailed Bats and Moho Pererū / Banded Rail are living right in town. Despite a huge community effort, we still need to reduce rat and possum populations to achieve better conservation outcomes. Last year, we intensified our networks by installing bait stations and using toxic baits. Intensive predator control will greatly enhance biodiversity, improve forest health and specifically benefit resident forest bird populations of bellbird, tomtits, tūī, kererū, pekapeka and ruru. To expand ground based predator control, we are also employing more people, including students from the Manaaki Ao education programme we run together with Raglan Area School. We’re excited to see the next generation of kaitiaki come on board! As a result of the ongoing work, together with the Department of Conservation and Waikato Regional Council, we have reduced the need for an aerial 1080 operation on Karioi – an aspirational goal for many community members. BUT … We can only continue this journey with your support! Eliminating predators using ground control requires significant funding. We have been incredibly blessed with donations from numerous local businesses, trusts, families

and individuals that have contributed more than $1.5 million in the last decade. To maintain our current work we need to raise $300,000 each year. Preview Exhibition for RAW opens next week RAGLAN ARTS WEEKEND

he Raglan Arts Weekend (RAW) kicks off next week with the opening of the Preview Exhibition on 1st October 2021 at the Old School Arts Centre, revealing 84 artworks from participating RAW artists. As is customary, there will be a showcase piece, as well as a small 300x300 per artist for sale, and interested folk need to be on the ball to secure popular artworks. This year, the showcase artworks have been developed to the theme: ‘And Then We Paused/ Reflections of a Covid World’ “The theme was decided upon pre-Delta, when NZ was largely Covid free after the first lockdown,” says Nicky Brzeska, RAW Co-ordinator. “It’s even more appropriate now with the current state of affairs, and we know it will resonate with a lot of people who are keen to get an artwork that illustrates this complex snapshot in time,” she says. The Preview Exhibition is an essential pillar to fundraising for RAW. All sales of the 300x300’s, as well as any commission on the showcase artworks, go towards running RAW

The Shack is a long-standing icon within the township, so we had to seek their new menu. The menu is packed and displays a wide variety of dishes, and of course, their cabinet remains stacked with goodness! We recommend the Chilli crunch rice with peanuts, lime, spring onion & coriander with your choice of soy-ginger bok choy (vegan)

or char siu pork belly. The green juice is also a winner, containing cucumber, kale, apple and lemon - definitely the tastiest green juice we have ever had. Rock-it Kitchen has just come out with both new lunch and dinner menus for spring. The establishment has found its feet and nailed a substantial range of dishes, including many new vegan and vegetarian. The crowd favourite and our recommendation dish are the Rock-it Power Bowl, which comes with sesame coated avo, kumara, beetroot, mango, peach chutney, and crispy chickpeas green with a choice of tofu or grilled chicken as your protein. The back deck has also been kitted out with many lights, making it the perfect place to watch the sunset from. Iso has been under renovation for the last couple of weeks. We went in for a sneak peek of what's to come and were not disappointed. The fresh new look will be ready for a busy summer season at the cafe and bistro. Iso is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and has worked with local producers for fresh ingredients and have many vegetarian and vegan options on their menu. The dish we recommend is the Crayfish ravioli with pecorino, basil and lime beurre blanc-which looks as great as it tastes. Iso is set to re-open on the 30th of this month. Raglan has a great selection of eateries, and The Shack, Rock-it Kitchen and Iso are among these, showing vast versatility and growth during these challenging times. More than ever, it is a great time to eat and support our cafes and restaurants, and these places are providing even more delicious incentives to do so!

hāingaroa Talent Factory, the joint project between Raglan Community Radio, Raglan Community House and CSR Studios, has announced their showcase event will be held on Saturday 16th October at The Yard.

Entries close on Friday 1st October with the mentoring session to be held the following Tuesday 5th October. The mentoring process is an important part of the WTF experience where young musicians, DJs, singers and MCs spend time with professional artists to develop their performance and/or songwriting skills. WTF is open to 13-18 year old's playing either covers or their own

songs and it's been timed so they will have the school holidays to prepare for the main event on October 16. Tukana Kaya and Jules Blewman will be joining the mentor team for WTF 2021 while Reiki Ruawai, Conor McCabe and Teia Kennedy are returning from last year. Teia Kennedy is a singer songwriter who won last year's emerging artist award at the National Waiata Māori Music Awards. Conor McCabe; Formerly lead singer of Melbourne based duo Fortunes, Conor is based in Whaingaroa again and performing solo under the stage name Keeper. Reiki Ruawai performs as a solo artist, member of Cornerstone Roots and Masaya and also MCs with other live acts.

Tukana is a local teacher and musician who has been passionately working with the tamariki of Whaingaroa for the past four years, teaching at Raglan Area School and privately. She is a traveller, artist, writer, activist, educator, string thing player, singer and nature enthusiast. Tukana has played music since she was a kid, and her recent journey into the professional world of music has seen her play at Earthbeat, NZ spirit and Solrise music festival, as well as playing shows around the North Island and opening for some amazing artists such as Kita, TOI and Louana. Tukana is currently working on her debut release. She is very excited and inspired to pass on her gifts and to work with some local legends in this amazing project.

Jules Blewman Jules is a guitarist, songwriter and producer with over 10 years experience touring, recording and educating. He is currently working with Wellington based artists Deva Mahal, TOI (formerly Tunes of I), Dr. Reknaw, Zoe Moon and Whaingaroa locals Masaya, Keeper (Conor McCabe) and Tukana. With a background in jazz, classical and contemporary music (soul, hiphop, rock, funk, pop, reggae etc) he is a diverse musician who is able to blend in and morph to suit a wide variety of roles and styles of music."

Spending so much time caring for his hives in the area where the Karioi Project are undertaking large-scale predator control, Bevan is keenly aware of the importance of preserving the native ﬂora and fauna. Restoring the biodiversity from the coast to the maunga, Bevan says the Karioi Project play a big role in BY JANINE JACKSON keeping his bees happy and fed, and to support this work he’s donating money from his honey sales. “Keeping bees gives me a unique insight into the vulnerability of their surroundings and highlights how important it is to look after our environment. It is this that led us to create a relationship with Karioi project, who do such important mahi around Whāingaroa,” he says. A beekeeper for nearly 15 years, Bevan stumbled upon the hobbybusiness when he was 18 and just about to leave high school. “I saw a hive for sale on TradeMe and bought it. I’ve got to be honest I went about it the wrong way.” That hive ended up at his father’s small farm in Matangi and with very little knowledge of caring for bees, Bevan started beekeeping. “It’s quite sad but I ended up losing it; I was heartbroken.” The setback didn’t deter him and after some self-guided research and advice from people in the honey business, he bought another couple of hives and started again. Bevan now has around 50-60 hives set up around Ruapuke and Karioi producing several varieties

Apiaries. It’s a boutique business, something that he’s passionate about and he’s happy keeping it small-scale. Bevan earns his crust as a plant operator for Open Country. The shift work ﬁts in nicely with his beekeeping giving him time during daylight hours to tend to the bees. His wife Emma helps with the marketing side of things and an old school mate Sven de Keersmaeker designed the labels. A pinup girl in her spare time, Emma is known as Miss Honey Bee and when she’s not at her day job or helping Bevan with the hives, she dresses up in vintage clothes and gives educational talks to schools and other organisations about the importance of bees to the environment. A number 8 wire sort of bloke, Bevan commitment to the environment sees him tinkering in the bee shed devising ways to practice sustainability in his beekeeping. Lately, he’s been working on a wind turbine to power the bee shed. All the parts have been sourced from the dump in Hamilton. “We get a lot of wind up here so why not try and harness it and be resourceful,” he says. That resourceful approach has also seen him collaborate with another local boutique foodie business, Raglan Chocolate and they are about to launch handcrafted honey chocolates. As a result of the recent bereavement of a community board member, an extraordinary vacancy has occurred in the Raglan Community Board of the Waikato District Council. Under section 120 of the Local Electoral Act 2001, notice is given that on Thursday 9 December 2021, a by-election will be held under the first past the post electoral system by postal vote for one member of the Raglan Community Board.

Consultation on proposed Livestock Movement Bylaw 2022 Waikato District Council is seeking feedback on a proposed Livestock Movement Bylaw 2022. Within rural areas of the Waikato District, livestock are moved using roads as part of the everyday operations of some farms. The proposed bylaw: • Sets out rules on how to move livestock safely on roads • Identifies where livestock movement is allowed, prohibited, or requires a Council livestock crossing or movement permit, based on the safety profile of the road. • Sets outs Council’s livestock movement or crossing permit processes and requirements • Notes how costs will be shared for stock underpasses by referring to New Zealand Transport Agency subsidy rules. Council previously had a Livestock Movement Bylaw 2011 which has now expired.
