Love me fenders: initial wharf work gets a tick

N

ew fenders now attached to the row of poles running along the front of Raglan’s wharf are the first tangible signs of progress in a key redevelopment plan fast-tracked by Waikato District Council back in May, thanks to a $2.5 million grant from the Government’s provincial growth fund.

The black teflon strips may not be immediately obvious to visitors and tourists but council community connections manager Megan May says commercial fishermen are “very excited” at the hi-tech replacement for the worn hunks of wood they used to tie up against. The fenders – which with “a few other bits” came at a cost of about $35,000 – will help prevent damage both to trawlers and berthing structures. Meanwhile the wharf’s four ladders will also soon be replaced, Megan adds. The two sets of work are only a drop in the bucket compared with what’s to come in the project which got underway after the Covid-19 lockdown and is scheduled to run through until the end of next year. Also imminent is an extension to the wharf proper of the new walkway on Wallis St. While council is waiting on its final design, Megan points out however that no physical work will begin until the end of February when Raglan’s busy summer season has eased. The extension could be built on rock foundations, so no car parking is lost. Meantime designs for a preferred standalone structure to provide extra berthing to the east of the wharf – on the Cox Bay side – are not yet settled but Megan is optimistic that “we will tender for the pontoon before Christmas”. She and Raglan Community Board representative Dennis Amoore head up a steering committee which is managing the whole process. They in turn work with a project control group made up of stakeholders, Ngāti Māhanga, local councillor Lisa Thomson and others including Soul Shoes’ Rob Galloway, who transformed the wharf’s historic silos into upmarket accommodation. “It’s a complex project with lots of moving parts to align,” Megan acknowledges of the wharf’s redevelopment. Dennis adds that a number of stakeholders – from commercial fishermen to residents and retailers – are involved and need to be included in what happens at the wharf. He describes the site as “multi-use” with both commercial and retail interests. “There’s lots to consider.” In fact the outcome of a risk assessment procedure was due early this week to determine the safety of the wharf

Cr Thomson is confident the project is in “really good hands”, with the community and council staff working collaboratively. “It’s a big project for a small community,” she says, encouraging anyone who wants an input to contact Raglan Community Board or to keep informed through its website. The wharf redevelopment is, coincidentally, under the overall day-to-day management of a Raglan resident: Tom Snaith from the Hamilton office of an Auckland-based international engineering consultancy, Beca Group. The new fenders - black teflon strips - run vertically down the row of poles along Once a regular port-of-call for coastal shipping, the Raglan's wharf frontage. wharf in recent decades has become what Cr Thomson describes as “an iconic feature of our seaside village”. environment for its users and, from that, how so handrails may be installed if the findings Along the way it has bounced back from a disastrous fire, the April 2010 blaze which razed its historic shed show they’re needed. structural works will be prioritised. Raglan Junior Soccer 2020 season wrap up

Junior Soccer prize giving

C

onsidering the disruptions caused by Covid-19, we managed to get through the season with the kids having a great time and with some amazing results throughout all divisions. As usual none of it would have been possible without the dedication and work done by all the coaches and managers, as well as the commitment given by all parents involved. Thank you to all involved. It really creates a community and social feel about the club, which shows on any given Saturday at Papahua. Special thanks to our First Kicks parents. Being very much a parent driven

program, it can be a bit daunting at the start of the season but by the end of it every team was doing great with lots of parents involved and having fun. Congratulations to every single player and team, you have done your club proud and the general feedback we receive from other clubs is that it’s always a pleasure to play a Raglan team, especially at Papahua. Special acknowledgements goes out for the list below of our Most Valuable and Most Improved players this year. Have a great and safe summer and we look forward to the 2021 season. Big day for local identity I t was something of a family affair this week as longtime Raglan identity Clint Baddeley was presented by the Governor-General with his gong as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to local government and the community.

Clint is pictured at the Auckland investiture flanked by Dame Patsy Reddy and his wife Jackie. Also there to celebrate the occasion were children Jamie and Sarah, and (far left) former Hamilton deputy mayor and Wintec chair Gordon Chesterman, who nominated Clint for the honour. While he was also on the Wintec board, where he spearheaded the redevelopment of its central Hamilton

campus, Clint is best known locally for his 12-year stint as Raglan district councillor and his three years as Waikato’s deputy mayor. His award – announced in the Queen’s Birthday honours three months ago – also recognises his service as convener of the Council of Trade Unions in the Waikato for 10 years, and as chair of the Waikato Community Trust. Locally he’s also helped set up Raglan junior soccer and worked as a volunteer ambulance driver. He continues to host the longest-running music show on Raglan Community Radio. A.T.

Whaingaroa Talent Factory 2020 E ntries to the inaugural youth competition, the Whaingaroa Talent Factory, are closing this Friday, September 25. Entry requirements have been clarified to allow individuals to enter in multiple acts (within reason).

So if you're a singer performing as an individual you can also enter as part of a band and if you're the drummer who helps out lots of different bands you'll be able do that as well. Just let us know on the entry form.

Mentor Bio: Joe Wilson Joe is a fun loving, down to earth guy who loves seeing people go after what they are passionate about in life and be willing to give things a shot! He has extensive experience mentoring youth as both a teacher and a youth worker and now works as a youth development advisor across the Waikato District. Joe has a massive passion for music and spent four years living between NZ, Australia and the UK as a singer songwriter… well, a busker playing on the streets!

Mentor Bio: Teia Kennedy Pairing an old soul with youthful swagger provides local artist Teia Kennedy a perfect platform to share stories through her music.

There's been a bit of confusion about whether acts have to perform original music or not. While there is a specific prize for the best original composition you don't have to play original music to enter Whaingaroa Talent Factory 2020. There are $1500 in prizes that will be going to the best performers regardless of who wrote the music. To enter, find Whaingaroa Talent Factory on social media or email naomi@soundsplash. co.nz by the end of Friday.

“Music is such a cool way for people to come together and find common ground. Writing your own songs and sharing your stories, experiences and feelings through music is so special and anyone who feels like giving it a go should 100% go for it!” Joe is passionate about young people having the best starts in life and being provided the opportunities and support to have fun exploring and learning about who they are and what paths they want to take in life. “WTF is such an awesome opportunity to share your talents and express yourself through music!” Joe releases his music under the name ‘Joe John Wilson’ and has a new single coming out next Friday (25th September) on Spotify and all the other usual digital and social media platforms. “Stoked to be a part of this awesome community project and see our youth showcase their talents!” With more than a decade of songwriting and live performance under her belt, the Ngati Kahungunu musician takes inspiration from the people and world around her. Inspired by a classic ‘old school’ vibe, Kennedy’s rich vocal tones and cleverly styled lyrics are well blended with simple, honest acoustic arrangements to create a unique sound.

Protecting taonga species in Pirongia and Te Kauri Forests To protect our at-risk native species and ecosystems, the Department of Conservation, Waikato District, and the Waikato Regional Council, intend to carry out predator control over 14,300 hectares of public conservation land and adjoining privately owned forest. (Refer to the application areas on map) Description of the area The largest area of native forest remaining close to Hamilton is of considerable conservation value due to the variety of plant life and wildlife habitats available. A nationally important habitat for taonga species such as kokako, kereru and North Island Robin, it is also a high value site for kaka, long-tailed bats and rare plants like pua o Te Teinga/wood rose. The northernmost kaikawaka for the western side of the North Island grow here, and Te Kauri park is the stronghold for the last remaining southern-most Kauri trees. Te Kauri Park Scenic Reserve is on SH31, west of Te Awamutu. Pirongia Forest Park is 25km south-west of Hamilton. Why we are doing pest control Without possum control in this culturally important area, we will lose the forest canopy and thus the habitats for our taonga species, which will in turn adversely affect catchment health and water quality. Suppressing the number of possums feeding on Mt Pirongia’s forest will improve the survival and health of a wide range of plant species and the kokako population. Ongoing control is required to ensure breeding success of these and other threatened taonga species. Predator control works Aerial 1080 has been particularly successful in the management of kokako in the central North Island. In an eight-year study, it effectively ‘rescued’ North Island kokako, reducing predation to the point where 50% of nests were able to produce young. Without predator control, most female kokako are killed while sitting on the nest. By the end of the study, the population in areas with predator control had increased eight-fold.. Method of predator control DOC and WRC have worked closely with affected marae on desired outcomes and consulted with stakeholders and the community. Between 15 September and 16 November 2020, DOC will apply baits containing biodegradable 1080 over the area shown on the map. A pre-feed of non-toxic baits has occurred to condition the rodents to eat the pellets. The toxic cereal bait pellets contain 0.15% of 1080, are cylindrical and approximately 16 mm in diameter. They are dyed green to deter birds and contain a cinnamon lure to attract pests. Non-toxic pre-feed cylindrical pellets are approximately 16 mm in diameter and sandy coloured (not dyed). The aerial operation uses calibrated buckets and GIS mapping technology to ensure bait drops in the designated area. Please see map attached. The pesticide is poisonous to humans and domestic animals. Always remember: •

DO NOT touch or eat the bait

WATCH CHILDREN at all times

DO NOT EAT animals from this area

Toxic baits and carcasses are DEADLY to DOGS

Observe these rules whenever you see warning signs placed at the public access points to treatment areas. Warning signs will remain in place until baits and carcasses are no longer a risk, possibly for more than six months. If you suspect poisoning Always contact: Your local doctor or local hospital or the National Poisons Centre: 0800 764 766 (urgent calls) or 03 479 7248 or dial 111.
