TheRaglan Chronicle would like to acknowledge the life and contributions of Narina Hurst, who sadly passed away last weekend.

Narina, known as Nan, was a true community stalwart having been involved with a number of community organisations throughout her years. From her time at the Bible Camp to her role as Patrol Coordinator for the Raglan Community Patrol and her involvement with the Raglan Community Radio station, many in the community will have experienced Narina's wonderful spirit.

A celebration of Narina's life was held on Tuesday, September 26. Narina's husband Peter has requested that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Raglan Community Patrol.

Our thoughts are with Peter and the rest of the whānau.

Raglan Golf Club Championships heat up

With the Raglan Golf Club championships amping up with hot competition, manager Julian Pujante says, “Suddenly the practice greens are full, the hitting nets are busy and you can't find a space on the putting areas!”

“We have the Club Champs on at the moment and members want to produce their best golf, hence the congestion around the practice zones!”

With three men’s divisions and three women’s divisions, it is a full programme running over a two month period. Finals day is October 7th with a club breakfast prepared for the finalists prior to finals golf.

Good luck finalists. ..off the tee...Pete Aim

Freelance superyacht stint turns into a real polar blast

It seems just about every second local has escaped this winter to some balmy Pacific isle, but one Raglan woman’s done the polar opposite – literally.

Cafe operator Emma Bassett arrived home recently from a holiday with a difference: a two month-long Alaskan cruise aboard a 62-metre sailboat surrounded by seals, otters and myriad other arctic wildlife.

And unlike lazing around some resort pool in Rarotonga, hers was a working holiday and not all cruisy as such. In fact

“we hit the ground running,” says the 39 year old.

Emma – a familiar face these days behind the counter of the hole-in-the-wall cafe The Hut in Rangitahi – is a onetime chief stewardess in the glamorous world of superyachts, and as an old hand she grabbed a freelance opportunity and launched herself back into that world for a bit.

Her task was “to help one of the stews into a chief steward role” on a privately owned luxury yacht. But she got more than she’d bargained on when her young

protégé had to leave only a week into the voyage because of a family crisis, and Emma herself had to assume the top job.

With 10 crew and up to 12 guests on board while cruising and kayaking in Glacier Bay National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its magnificent glaciers and incredible wilderness scenery – she found the working holiday a hectic one.

It entailed everything from housekeeping and managing other stewardesses to ordering uniforms and flowers or buying food and wine for guests, she says.

But the itinerary had been a big selling point, she adds, and in all her 11 years of working on superyachts in the past it was this trip – sailing up the Inner Passage from British Columbia to Alaska then cruising the glaciers – that turned out to be the best. “I would do it all again,” she says.

At Glacier Bay their yacht was surrounded by seals, dolphins and many otters which lolled in the water to the delight of those on board. “One did a full lap on its back around the boat,” Emma recalls.

They also saw whales multiple times a day, she adds, with humpbacks and orcas frequently breaching and bubble-feeding. “It was quite mesmerising.”

Other highlights included kayaking with guests through the glaciers to where salmon spawn – and where bears, not usually seen in packs, fed on the salmon. “It was incredible just seeing them in the wild,” Emma says.

Meantime others on the cruise would fish from a tender – taking care to keep some distance from the seals with their young – and provide fresh salmon for the daily menu.

Emma admits the experience has made her a little nostalgic and that she wouldn’t be averse to doing more occasional freelance work if it comes her way.

She actually took her first freelance job – a voyage to Tahiti – only last year, and has since updated her qualifications with the possibility of more exciting adventures in mind.

“It’s a great way to earn good money, travel and see the world,” she says. “It sets you up for life.”

Fond farewell for Raglan’s iconic barefoot ‘dog man’

About150 friends and family shared fond memories at Raglan Club last Monday of a homeless man who for years ambled Whāingaroa’s streets and the beach every day, stopping to chat to friends and strangers with a faithful German Shepherd by his side.

Known by many around town simply as the ‘dog man’, Brian Chesham touched a lot of hearts and even became something of a celebrity figure – appearing on Prime and TV3 – when early last year the community rallied to give him and dog Luga a van to live in.

Through a Givealittle page, Raglan raised more than $17,000 to help the pair out.

In the fortnight or so since Brian passed away, his best friend Luga has been found a new home with family in Hamilton, but was brought along and sat quietly inside the main door of the club during the celebration of Brian’s 67 years.

Brian loved Raglan, his first cousin Raewyn Stevenson told the informal gathering. “And Raglan loved Brian too.”

Raewyn shared some treasured memories from her now 17 years as a Raglan-based policewoman, a role in which she often saw Brian out walking with his German Shepherd – first Zak, then Luga. And she told of a

community coming together to help a man out with coffees, friendship and eventually a campervan as a mobile home.

She also related how a relative in town came to the police station to ask her “in your official capacity” to get her cousin Brian to cut his toenails. But she didn’t feel the need to do that, she laughed, nor to file a police report. And she never breathed a word to Brian about the aunt’s visit.

Brian had a long affiliation with Raglan, his younger brother Wayne told those who gathered on Monday afternoon to celebrate his life. The Chesham family was from Fairfield and spent many Christmas holidays first at a bach in Cliff St, then at Kopua campground.

A cousin of Brian’s said that growing up he saw him as an older brother, recalling the family holidays in Raglan. “He taught Wayne and I all the mischief we knew … and he could do the best manus (bum-first bombs) off that bridge.”

Brian ultimately chose and went on to love his “nomadic” way of life in Raglan over the last 15 years or so, said Wayne, thanking the community on behalf of their family for accepting him as he was.

He was on a sickness benefit after having suffered three heart attacks in his 40s, and

early on was familiar to many around town in a red Toyota station wagon with dog Zak.

Then longtime local Rangi Kereopa gave him a caravan on family land at Manu Bay to live in. She told the gathering that when mail addressed to him arrived at her place – mostly from WINZ or the doctor – he’d just say to tear it up. “So I did!”

Family members told of Brian’s teenage years at St John’s College where he enjoyed playing rugby and cricket and, after that, had motorbikes for motocross riding.

Later he joined the Territorials, relishing both the discipline and the camaraderie of army life. “It was the leanest and fittest we ever saw the bugger,” his brother quipped.

Comrades at that time – fellow gunners in Vietnam – revealed he was called Handsome in the army, not Brian. They said he was a “massively strong man” who also played regimental rugby with the best of them.

He was not hard done by, they insisted of Brian’s later Raglan life wandering and chatting among friends. “It was just the way he lived.”

Brian had become a little disenchanted with the norms of society, said another friend, but was happy to be free “to walk barefoot in Raglan”.

Raglan’s tiniest shop gets a revamp

Raglan Business Chamber

What will happen to your business if you are ready to move onto another venture or into retirement?

Succession planning is not a quick or cheap process so it pays to plan ahead.

If you’ve worked for years to build up your business, handing over to someone else may be furthest from your mind. Few owners have formal exit plans — if any — because it’s too early to think about it, or there’s no time to create one or they don’t know where to start.

There are serious risks if you don’t plan who’ll succeed you. Small businesses without succession plans often fail when their owners retire, get sick or die.

If you are running a family business or in a partnership where selling the business on the open market is not a viable option a solid succession plan is essential if you want your business to carry on successfully after you leave it. The plan needs to identify which family members or partners will take over or offer another management option.

If you’ve decided to step back from your business, but you want to stay connected to it, there are several ways to do this:

The tiny shop on Bow Street might have had a makeover but it will still be a hub for community creativity, innovation and collaboration.

Trade Aid manager Eloise Deller will be taking over allocating the use of the shop and hopes to make it easier with an instore booking system.

“If people want to book the shop, they just need to pop into Trade Aid and book a date.”

Eloise says the ethos behind the little shop is still the same; supporting local artisans and those in developing countries.

“We still want this space available for our community and we are also keen to use it as a pop-up education space and to promote the amazing Trade Aid artisans and their products.”

One of the central principles of Trade Aid is to raise awareness about fair trade.

“We are looking forward to running campaigns to raise consumer’s awareness about their purchases and encouraging them to support fair trade as much as possible,” she says.

The initiative was originally set up by Jono Hutson in August 2020, to be a space used by local creatives, artists, foodies and other small-scale ventures to share their wares in the prime main street location.

He also ran Community Kai regularly in the space with his partner Sara Howie to provide quality, nutritious kai to the community on a ‘pay what you can afford’ basis.

Giving back to the community was the impetus behind Jono’s desire to utilise the tiny shop and the Trade Aid team want Jono’s idea to continue to showcase locally made products.

“We are grateful to Jono for starting this initiative. It was an easy fit as it was very much in line with our ethos of creating a more equitable world through trade aid principles,” Eloise says.

Tucked in between Trade Aid and Bohemian Gypsy, the tiny shop was carved out of redundant storage space in the Trade Aid shop and started life as Jenny Carter’s Ruapuke Artisan Bread outlet.

Measuring 2.4sqm, the tiny shop packs a big punch with a premium main street appeal.

At its widest point the tiny shop is no longer than a bed in its confined 1.2 by 2sq m approximate dimensions but, Eloise says, while it might be small it has a big heart.

“The tiny shop is such a big part of Raglan and we’re looking forward to giving it a new lease of life.”

Trade Aid on Bow St is open seven days a week from 9am-5pm

• Retain a share. You can keep a stake or shareholding in your business to give you an income in retirement or while you start another venture. Get advice from a lawyer and accountant if this will involve giving or selling shares in your business.

• Retain a role. You may decide you can step back from the business but still offer valuable advice to your successor, especially if they lack your experience and knowledge. Decide what role to take, eg. director or consultant, and talk to your successor about how it will work.

It's a good idea to get advice for every stage of succession planning. How much advice you need depends on:

• where you are with your planning

• your business structure — companies and partnerships may need more advice than sole trader businesses

• the size of your business, for example, your turnover

• how much your assets — including your intellectual property — are worth.

Succession planning isn’t an exact science, but there are steps you should take:

1. Talk to family/partners. It’s important to ask relevant family members about succession, even those who don’t work in the business. Everyone may have different ideas of what’s best for them and the business.

2. Set goals. Decide on what you want to happen to your business, what your role will be — if you want one — who should run it and when you want to leave, for example, when you turn 65 or the business is worth a particular dollar value.

3. Know your assets. Identify all your assets and liabilities. This helps to value your business so you can calculate shares or sale price.

4. Have a timeframe. Getting a sound plan in place can take a few years. The earlier you start, the easier it will be to leave when you want.

5. Get advice. You’ll need professional advice at various stages of your planning and exit. Think ahead and approach them well in advance.

6. Document your plan. Make sure key decisions are written down and accessible to family and advisors.

7. Review your plan. Do this regularly, for example, at least yearly, to account for changes to your business and circumstances.

Local writer's novel set for tv adaptation

Ashow based on local author Merren Tait's firt novel, Year of the Fox has been given the green light for prodction and the Raglan Chronicle caught up with Merren to hear about update.

Merren tell us about your exciting news.

Late last week NZ On Air announced funding for upcoming television projects and included was $2.5mil to go towards the production of Year of the Fox, a show based on my first novel. So, yes - super, crazy exciting.

How did the TV show come about?

Luck. A school friend of mine, Becs Arahanga, who happens to be a director and production company owner, bought my first novel to support me and couldn't put it down or stop laughing when she read it. She rang me the same day to offer me the television option. Since then it's been a slow but steady five or so years to get to this point.

How involved are you?

I have very little to do with the show and its development. It's been completely Becs' baby and the story will look a little different. It's shifted to an ao Māori setting. The main character will be Māori and the neighbourly land dispute in the novel becomes a tribal one. The story does keep the quirks of the novel and Becs describes the show as "Fleabag meets Jojo Rabbit", which, frankly, sounds truly awesome. I've been lucky enough to read the script for the first episode and it

couldn't get off to a better start. I have no doubt the show is in excellent hands.

What's your reaction to NZ On Air's announcement?

I'm absolutely ecstatic. Every author dreams of having their work adapted for the screen and very few get to have the honour. I feel extraordinarily privileged and lucky, but also very proud of my work.

When will we be able to watch it on our screens?

I'm not sure. There are a few more hurdles to get through first before the final green light is given on the project and a production schedule is then set. However, whenever it's ready for broadcast, the good news is that it will be free to air on Three and Threenow, which is fantastic. Everyone will be able to view it without the need for a potentially prohibitive subscription.

You also have a new novel out, so please tell us about this.

My fifth novel is called Real Life and Other Disasters and is about two people who dislike each other in real life, but unwittingly fall for each other in a gaming chatroom. It's a bit of a departure from my previous novels in that it's set in London instead of New Zealand, but it's just as funny and sets a cracking pace. I had a ball writing it.

Where can people find your books?

My books are available in Made, Zinnia, iHub, via my website www.merrentait.com, and through all good online bookstores.

An interview with the Holistic Tooth Fairy

TheRaglan Chronicle caught up with Meliors Simms also known as the Holistic Tooth Fairy to learn about her recently published book, The Secret Lives of Teeth, and her approach to oral health.

You describe yourself as a natural oral health coach, also known as the Holistic Tooth Fairy. I’m fascinated. Can you explain to us what this unique role involves?

People mostly find me when they are searching for holistic health information online and find my website. I meet with my coaching clients on Zoom from my home in Raglan. They can be based anywhere in the world but mostly live in Australia or the United States. Generally I attract people who are already familiar with a holistic approach to general health, and want help applying that philosophy to their teeth and gum issues.

I work with many of my clients to avoid unnecessary dental procedures with improved nutrition and herbal remedies. We might fine tune their oral hygiene habits. I do a lot of work helping people with relaxing and energising their jaws, to stop clenching and grinding their teeth which can lead to serious dental and periodontal issues.

I also help folks have better experiences with necessary dental procedures. Some of my clients might not have been to the dentist for years, maybe even decades. I’ll coach them through finding and booking in with a good local dentist and to overcome any fears or resistance to getting care.

A lot of my clients choose to work with me because they want to understand the emotional or spiritual meaning of their teeth or gum issues. Stress and trauma have a huge, yet mostly unrecognised, influence on oral health both in your current circumstances and through your family history.

How and why did you come up with the idea to publish a book?

I’ve always been a writer of short stories, poetry, zines and a blog about making art. I grew up in a household dominated by my father’s small publishing company and prolific authorship, so I was very familiar with the ins and outs of writing and selfpublishing. Even before I started the Holistic Tooth Fairy, I was being asked to write a book about holistic oral health but I decided to start small with a blog and newsletter when I began coaching eight years ago.

By far the most common search that brings people to my website is for the ‘spiritual meaning’ of a particular symptom or part of the mouth, as there's very little information available anywhere on this topic. It’s the most interesting aspect of my work as a coach, where I’ve developed a unique system of Tooth Archetypes. The Tooth Archetypes are a user-friendly way to work with the psychic strengths and social vulnerabilities of each individual tooth. There were zero publications in English that focused in on the metaphysical anatomy of the mouth, and I had something original and useful to offer, so I decided to start there with my first book. What kind of feedback have you had about the book?

The Secret Lives of Teeth has been received really well, from even before publication, with a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, and then steady sales on Amazon and my website since launching in May this year. It recently won a Bronze Medal in the Global Book Awards 2023 (in the Health Mind and Body category).

How long have you been living in Raglan and what is your story on how you landed here?

I’ve been visiting Raglan beaches since I was a little kid so it’s always been a magical destination for me. I finally moved here from Hamilton early in 2020 as I’d been thinking about making the move for a while but the

Environmental Project

Afew years ago, Armin and Christopher cycled from their hometown in Germany to the border of Iran & Pakistan.

Together with our mascot, ‘Tim Turtle’, we accumulated 9000km across 15 different countries. The goal was, and still is, to educate children around sustainability and therefore create environmental awareness.

Alongside our adventure we visited schools to deliver our interactive and playful programme. The kids got equipped not just with information, but essential skills for daily use around reuse, reduce and recycling.

We continued our efforts after the monumental trip in schools all over Germany and reached far more than 500 children. We were fortunate to hold several presentations to share our experiences across Germany.

Organising cleanups in the local regions helps us to generate more holistic awareness around sustainability. One of the main highlights so far was carrying out the FIRST EVER environmental day in our hometown of Wittenberg.

Now, WE GO AGAIN! Two bikes, 2000km across the Alps to discover Italy all the way

first lockdown was the catalyst. I decided that if I was going to have to be stuck at home, I wanted to be able to walk out of my door into some beautiful nature every day and to be part of a close-knit community in alignment with my environmental values. What community groups are you actively involved with?

The first thing I did when I moved to Raglan was join Raglan Timebank through the Whāingaroa Environment Centre, as I’d been a very active member in the Hamilton

Timebank. Then I got involved with Crop Swap and now I’m one of the Guardians.

My latest community involvements are with the Repair Cafe where I offer visible mending on clothing and at Raglan Community Radio where I’m recording the audio book edition of The Secret Lives of Teeth.

How can our readers get hold of a copy?

You can buy the paperback edition locally from Zinnia, Well Read Books or get the ebook on my website www.holistictoothfairy. com. It’s also stocked in the Raglan Library.

Building Strong foundations for our Children

process by which individuals acquire and refine skills related to physical movement, cognitive abilities, and emotional regulation. This knowledge equips me to assist people of all ages in fulfilling their developmental needs.

Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working with diverse groups, including children, in prevention and therapy settings, adults in mental health hospitals, and the elderly in residential care. I've also worked closely with families from various socioeconomic backgrounds, visiting their homes to gain deeper insights into their unique circumstances.

What do you think are the main difficulties parents face in these current times?

In these current times, parents face a multitude of challenges, including work-family balance, stress, mental health concerns, limited social support, and parenting guilt. Finding suitable childcare and making schooling decisions further compounds these issues.

What are some of the ways you work with parents through their issues?

I create a safe and non-judgmental space for parents to express their thoughts and concerns, providing unwavering support throughout their journey. I assist parents by teaching mindfulness and relaxation techniques, collaboratively setting achievable goals, and crafting tailored action plans to address specific challenges.

Freedom2Fly Festival 2023

The Chronicle caught up with Ines Schickendantz who is offering services in Raglan.

Describe what you do.

I work in maternal and paternal mental health. I specialise in helping parents and those planning to be, to manage stress, anxiety, fears, navigate societal pressures and break inter generational cycles of dysfunction, while helping them to build strong, healthy parent-child relationships.

My mission is to empower individuals and families to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

What is your background in terms of training/ qualifications and experience ?

With my degree in Psychomotor Development, I possess a profound understanding of the continuous developmental

My approach is highly individualized, aiming to equip parents with effective coping mechanisms, enhance wellbeing, and improve parent-child relationships. My goal is to foster an environment where parents can freely share, knowing they have a supportive ally by their side.

What are you offering in Raglan?

I'm excited to announce the "Building Strong Foundations for our Children" event on October 12th at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre. This event raises awareness about the significance of parental well-being, inspiring parents to thrive, fostering a supportive community, and creating awareness of parents' pivotal role in building harmonious family lives.

Raglan Ukulele Festival

RecentlyRaglan was full of ukulele players from all over the central and upper North Island, here for the inaugural Raglan Ukulele Festival (RUF).

Uke enthusiasts were able to choose from a morning programme of workshops at Raglan Old School Arts Centre, followed by an afternoon of performances from visiting solos, duos and groups.

The one-day festival finished with a public concert at the Raglan Club on the Saturday evening, featuring local groups and guest acts French/American duo Sonia & Nigel (from Auckland) and Hamilton's Big Muffin Serious Band (celebrating their fortieth year of uke-based humour).

RUF was officially just one day, but as it coincided with Arts Centre monthly events, there was also the opportunity to make a full weekend of it. That Friday's Live & Local featured Raglan ukulele acts and on Sunday

morning there were performance spots at the Raglan Creative Market and in various cafes around town - including the debut of the Raglan Area School ukes.

The festival was a combined effort by Raglan ukulele groups and the Old School Arts Centre, and helmed by the Arts Centre's music co-ordinator (and leader of The Blister Sisters) Penni Bousfield, and Brian Wilson (Arts Centre committee member and leader of The Ragtimers).

Both the festival and the public concert sold out and comments described RUF as a relaxed, fun, friendly event, with many outof-town attendees relishing the chance to combine playing the ukulele and spending a weekend in Raglan.

A big thank you to RUF's funders and sponsors: Waikato District Creative Communities, Waikato Sunrise Rotary, Trek'n'Travel, Julie Hanna – Ray White Real Estate, Raglan Light & Sound, The Raglan Club, Shearer's Music Works.
