aglan Community Radio is set to celebrate 25 years with a birthday bash at the Raglan Town Hall on Friday, November 1 from 7.30pm till late. The all ages, one-night extravaganza with bands, DJs, international food, and an R18 bar will also be broadcast live over the 98.1fm airwaves. Station manager Aaron Mooar says the birthday bash will be a huge night with the early bird tickets already sold out. "Our birthday celebration is a big thank you to the community for their support over the last 25 years. There will be limited door sales so get your tickets online at Dash Tickets. It’s a great line-up of acts for just $10 which was about as cheap as we thought we could do it.” Raglan’s favourite roots, rock, reggae band Lost Tribe Aotearoa who started their rise to fame in 2017 in Raglan, and have since released several singles, will be a crowd pleaser with their mix of skanking reggae, metal, rock and blues. Local legends Mighty Mighty who recently released their single Buzz Shakes at the Yot Club will be sure to get the crowd on their feet with their Funkadelic sounds. Station DJs will also be performing between sets, including the legendary. DJ Red Robin who hosts the Reggae Rodeo

show with selections from the 70's, 80's,90s and today. ULOs kitchen will be there selling their Japanese-fusion food and a R18 bar will be operating in the supper room with the main hall open to all ages. Three young acts from Raglan Area School will also hit the stage for their chance to perform in front of an audience full of music-lovers. Aaron had seen the three acts perform at the Raglan Area School music night and invited Merehia Hutchin, a regular busker at the Raglan Creative Market, Summer Morgan-Haugh who wrote a couple of great songs as part of her NCEA and five young musos in the band who were a real crowd favourite on the night. “We wanted to use the event as an opportunity to give some young bands time on the stage in front of a large audience. We're keen for the community to get down to the Town Hall early and show their support,” he says. The date for the celebration was originally set for November 2 but a clash with another important event made the radio crew change dates to accommodate. “We realised the Rugby World Cup Final was on that night - we figured they wouldn't shift their event for us,” Aaron laughs. Visit www.dashtickets.co.nz to purchase tickets, for more information visit Raglan Community Radio on Facebook or contact manager@ raglanradio.com. Janine Jackson

layers from around the country came to Raglan to battle it out in the 5,000-year-old game of backgammon. Organised by the Hamilton Backgammon Club, the competition took place over two days in Volcom Lane with around 30 keen backgammon contestants. Unknown to many of the Raglan crew, several national backgammon champs were also amongst the competitors. National champion and winner of the Raglan comp James Noble from Auckland says the Raglan players did a fine job competing against the best-of-the-best. “The standard was really high and they discharged themselves admirably against the top players in New Zealand. The national comp came to Raglan that weekend and regardless of the results, they were playing the best in the country.” After the first day of competition games, 16 players qualified for the final sudden death which saw the players whittled down to eight then four until the top two players pitted their best backgammon strategies and tactics against each other. Hamilton Backgammon organisers Greg Forsyth and Paula Southgate, who was recently elected Mayor of Hamilton, discovered the Raglanites’ love of backgammon when having a coffee at Raglan Roast. “We decided to host an event in Raglan and encourage Auckland players down. It was so successful we will definitely be back next year,” Greg says. Watch this space as a Raglan backgammon club could soon be on the horizon. Janine Jackson

I

f you need affordable housing, or have any ideas about what you think we could incorporate into an affordable housing project for Whaingaroa, come along to the Town Hall on Sunday the 3rd of November and make sure your views are heard. The WRAP team – our local Whaingaroa Raglan Affordable Housing Project – have put together a set of 5, one hour, themed panel discussions so we can collect as much input from the community as possible.

With funding and support from the WEL Energy Trust Vital Impact funds, Waikato District Council, the local community Board, Raglan Business Chamber and the Raglan Community House, WRAP have been working towards a plan for housing solutions in Raglan for the past 2 years. Rising house and land prices, a reduction in available rental properties and rising costs of rent have seen people on low to medium level incomes struggle in the current environment. Government policy has a strong focus on housing; the region has formed a strong advocacy and leadership group, the Waikato Region Housing Initiative, representing more than 30 organisations with an interest in providing housing across the spectrum of need. WRAP has been represented on that committee since its inauguration and has strong support in principle for the idea of progressing an affordable housing solution in Raglan. So come along, tell us what you think. We will collect ideas from the audience throughout the panel discussions. If you don’t have time to stay for long, just pop in and jot down your thoughts on the post-it boards around the main hall; if you’ve got some time, settle in for the day or just select from any of the discussions – hear the views of our locals, their hopes and experiences and technical experts, local and regional, on all aspects of affordable housing development – then let’s put all this together and pitch our story to those who can help us build something. Any questions, please call Fiona McNabb, WRAP project Lead on 027 688 9754.

Locals pick up Maori Titles at Community Volunteers surf comp An occasional column featuring

C

hris Malone and Zhana Hutchieson surfed to victory at the Aotearoa Maori Titles this weekend and in doing so claimed two of the coveted trials slots for the Piha Pro come March 2020. The two surfers fought off some tough opponents with excellent surfing on the final day of the event held in 1.0m – 1.5m waves at Tuiraho (Stent Road). Malone used his exceptional ocean sense to pick off two of the best waves that came through in the final as conditions deteriorated over the low tide in the afternoon. He surfed to an astonishing 17.5 point heat total in the final to defeat the Taranaki trio of Jamie Andrews, defending champion

Bachelor Tipene and Brandon Kingi who finished second through fourth respectively. “Far out, I haven’t had my hands on this trophy since the event almost started, maybe back in the late 1990s. I am super stoked to win and especially up against these guys here beside me who I have competed against for years” said Malone at the prize giving. “The slot in the Piha Pro Trials is an added bonus but this event is mainly about bringing Maori surfers from around Aotearoa together for the unique event that this is” added Malone. The Under 18 titles went to Kora Cooper (Rag) who posted a massive 16.26 point heat total for the win. Raglan surfers Josef Jungwirth and Navryn Malone made it a clean sweep of the boy’s age group divisions winning the Under 16 and 14 Boys Divisions. Surfing NZ

Long-serving Coastguard volunteer receives national award

L

ike many community volunteers Kevin Dreaver is a humble man, he didn’t join Raglan Volunteer Coastguard for the accolades - he’s in it to give back to the community and to pay back for the times he’s needed help. Awarded Rescue Vessel Volunteer of the Year 2019, he has been with the crew for close to 20 years. Last year the Raglan team brought 120 people home safely and Kevin would have been involved in all of these. Like many sea-lovers, Kevin had been coming to Raglan for many years for the surfing and sailing. He owned a 28-foot catamaran and remembers one time before he moved permanently to town sailing it from Auckland and being offered help by the coastguard. “The tide was down and I was waiting outside the bar for it to come in. Although I didn’t need the help they came out and offered to shepherd me over the bar,” he says. It was because of this unsolicited offer of help that Kevin decided to volunteer for coastguard. “I thought I’d repay the favour.” He’s now one of the longest serving volunteers and according to the crew he gives much more of his time than any other unit member. One of the most memorable rescues involved a charter fishing boat operator out for a day’s fish with his wife and four kids – the youngest was only a toddler. The boat got stuck on a rock halfway to Papanui Point and Kevin transported the group on the jetski, one-by-one, to the coastguard rescue boat. He also vividly remembers spending days taking police out to recover the bodies of 2degrees' boss Eric Hertz and his wife Kathy from the plane wreckage on the sea floor. The couple were flying to Timaru from Auckland, but never arrived. During the flight the aircraft reported engine trouble and ditched into the sea off Gannet Island. It’s rescues like these, no matter how big or small, that keep Kevin coming back for

more. And while most rescues have a happy ending, Kevin and the rest of the crew give their all to every incident, regardless of the outcome. Raglan Coastguard president Wally Hawken says Kevin has dedicated so much time to coastguard that he’s literally put his life on hold for the benefit of the unit – postponing holidays and even a surgery to ensure the unit stays operational. Kevin is an integral part of Raglan Volunteer Coastguard - recently helping train three of the crew as skippers and was the driving force behind sourcing and organising fundraising for a dry dock mooring berth that lifts Gallagher Rescue - a large catamaran - out of the water, greatly reducing vessel maintenance costs. “Without Kevin the Raglan unit could not have functioned as an effective and highly successful search and rescue entity operating at sea on the unpredictable West Coast,” Wally says. Kevin moved to Raglan in 1994 and worked as a boat builder for many years – building the 45-foot boat owned by Rob Galloway owner of Soul Shoes. He continues professionally to do boat repairs and builds custom-made kitchens at his business Waikato Marine Composites located at Nau Mai Business Park. Kevin is an honorary life member of Raglan Volunteer Coastguard. Janine Jackson

The Whāingaroa Environment Centre ▬▬▬ (07) 825-0480 ▬▬▬ find us in the Town Hall, Bow Street

Growing together Spring brings the energy for growth and preparation, trying new ideas and getting out in to our gardens. Now is the time to prepare and mulch beds, sow lots of vegetable seeds, propagate new cuttings and get those seedlings in the ground. Thanks to the energy from many in our community to support local food resilience, our local food projects are growing too! The Whāingaroa Community Gardens has a budding food forest with 16 new fruit trees now established. These gardens are a place for our community to connect with each other and with our local environment. It’s amazing how good it feels to get your hands dirty and grow food! These are your gardens Raglan! We’d love to see you there; individuals, families, everyone! There’s plenty of summer plantings to do, opportunities to learn at workshops coming up and we need lots of volunteers to enjoy the bounty of the summer harvest! Come join us as at a working bee this summer; 9.30am-10.30am on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. You can find the gardens tucked in just behind the Raglan Police Station on Wi Neera Street. Oram Park Food Forest is a collaboration between local neighbours, a new volunteer guardian group, Whāingaroa Environment Centre (WEC) and WDC. This area has been revived with over 25 new fruit trees recently planted. Regular working bees will be scheduled soon – keep an eye on the WEC facebook page for more information. Tamariki Mahi Māra, our edible gardening education programme in schools, has been full steam ahead this year. A new ‘no dig’ garden was recently established at Te Mata School and food is pumping out of the Waitetuna school gardens thanks to the care and attention of students. Crop Swap is still one of Raglans’ strongest community projects and continues to provide abundance for its members and inspire other groups to take charge. You can join a swap from 9.30am on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month at the Raglan Bowling Club. Bring along anything home-made or home-grown to share. The Raglan Horticulture Society provides a wealth of gardening knowledge to our community. Everyone welcome to join their meetings & connect with other keen growers from 1pm on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Union Church Hall, Stewart Street.

Kia mihi koutou mō tō aroha me tō tautoko Whāingaroa Congratulations! We made it! Over the last 3 months the community has raised $30,000 through the Give A Little campaign, koha through Kaahu’s Nest and direct donations into Xtreme’s account to support the continuation of Whāingaroa’s kerbside food waste collection . Donations came from some generous Businesses, our Community Board, Community Organisations and Individuals. Thank you all whether your donation was large or small, the amount the community raised has been match funded by two private donors to bring the total up to $90,000! This will keep the kerbside collection going through until March 2020. Further funding streams are being sought to ensure we keep the collection going until July 2020. So we are pleased to announce that the foodwaste collection will continue as usual. You can get replacement compostable bags for your caddy by putting the slip from the end of the flatpack inside the bin on top of your foodwaste. Or you can get your replacement pack from Kaahu’s Nest up at 186 Te Hutewai Rd. Please put your foodwaste bin out on the kerbside with: • 2 x recycling crates • one for glass – NO BROKEN OR WINDOW GLASS PLEASE • one for aluminium cans, tin cans (please squash sharp lids for your tin cans inside the can) and 1 – 7 plastics. • Flattened cardboard (up to 5 x boxes) • Paper – tied, secured inside a cardboard box or paper bag. • Pre-paid bag – please keep your pre-paid bag under 15kgs, our team lift up to 400 bags per day over 4 days, overweight bags can create a health hazard for our team. PLEASE DOUBLE WRAP ALL BROKEN GLASS AND SHARPS. Summer is approaching fast, during this time our team are put under Xtreme pressure! we thank our community for following these guidelines it makes our job much easier.
