Tenacity the name of the Games, says Olympian

Te Mata School students had the opportunity to meet Olympic rowing gold medallist Joe Sullivan when he visited the school this week as part of his Olympic Ambassador work.

O

lympic gold medallist Joe Sullivan’s job is to inspire people. And he’s good at it.

The double scull rower, who won a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games with Nathan Cohen, was at Te Mata School and Raglan Area School this week to prove just that. He showed footage from his 2012 wining race – admitting he was so terrified beforehand that he was sick – and handed around his gold medal to the delight of the children. “It’s kind of like getting all the presents that you’ve ever wanted all at once. It’s really, really, really exciting,” he told the 80-odd Te Mata School students about winning the medal. Although now retired from competitive rowing, he had assumed the role of Olympic Ambassador, visiting schools around the country to share his experiences and to spread inspiration wherever he could. Raised in Picton, Joe decided at the

age of 10 he wanted to go to the Olympics after watching the gold medal wins of New Zealanders Sarah Ulmer and Danyon Loader – he just didn’t know what sport would take him there. He got into rowing at the age of 14. The first year he came last in every regatta he entered. Being highly competitive, he didn’t enjoy that at all, so he trained hard and the next year the first places started to come. Joe told the Te Mata children that he went to four New Zealand trials, but never got selected for a New Zealand team because the selectors thought he was too short for a rower and they didn’t like his rowing style. He eventually challenged their decision through the Ombudsman, which deemed it unfair, and he finaly got to represent New Zealand internationally. “If you’re doing sport and you really want to achieve in it, don’t let anyone tell you you can’t do it,” he said. Joe proved his case: winning about

70 medals over his 14-year competitive career, including wins at the World Rowing Under-23 Champs in 2007, 2008 and 2009, and at the World Rowing Champs in 2010 and 2011. Rowing took up most of his time, requiring 36 hours training a week with only three weeks off a year, he said. Financially, he relied on his parents and part-time jobs to support him for most of the time until he got some rewards from his wins. But Joe said the gold medal was worth it. “It [the gold medal] is very important to me. I have no idea what it is worth, but I wouldn’t sell it for the world,” he told the children. Now Joe said he was ready to have a life and move on to new challenges. He had a job as a fireman in Devonport, Auckland, where he was putting his tenacity and competitive skills to good use. “You can dedicate to anything if you can do rowing for 14 years,” he said. Talk of Subway well off track

F

orget those dastardly rumours that a fast food chain is about to establish an outlet in Raglan – it’s all pie in the sky stuff. “A Subway’s simply not going to happen here,” Hayley Soanes, site manager at The Top Garage, reassured the Chronicle last week. She thinks the rumours may have spread because the new owner of the BP station – formerly known as Garrett

Automotive – has Subway outlets at some of his Caltex stations. Hayley says she is however trying to “upsell” coffees – there’s been good feedback to a trial of Robert Harris blends in the garage’s new coffee machine – and if all goes well may look next year at joining a small number of fellow BP2go stations around the country in offering a “Hungry As” range of food to go along with baristamade coffee.

“Hungry As” outlets are downsized versions of the Wild Bean Cafes which have now developed into a nationwide chain. Meanwhile The Top Garage – Raglan town’s only fuel outlet – has extended out to 9pm closing for the summer and plans to have attendants helping on the forecourt at rush times. Edith Symes

T

e Uku, Te Mata and Waitetuna residents are being offered the opportunity to have kerbside collection of their rubbish bags and recyclables, as part of a raft of changes being proposed to Waikato District Council waste services. The WDC has sent about 300 ratepayers in these rural areas a letter asking if they wanted kerbside collection of pre-paid bags and recyclables, said Xtreme Zero Waste relationship manager Rick Thorpe. The council’s proposed changes to waste services was about wanting to improve waste minimisation practices and working towards zero waste in the district. Feedback on its proposals was required by December 15, before the recommendations were adopted into the council’s Long-Term Plan for 2015-25. Council was proposing extending kerbside recycle collection along the Main Road to Otonga Valley Rd in Raglan, and into Waitetuna, Old Mountain Rd,

Okete Loop Rd, Te Mata Rd (as far as the township), Ponds Rd, part of Ohautira Rd and Maungatawhiri Rd. Rick said this would probably result in the removal of the waste drop-off points in Te Uku and at the Main Rd junctions at Maungatawhiri and Te Mata Rds. However the drop-off point in Te Mata would remain as it serviced a large rural area that would not be covered by kerbside collection. The council wanted to establish community recycle centres at Huntly and Te Kauwhata, similar to Raglan’s Xtreme Zero Waste, and small rural drop off points to feed these centres. Pre-paid bags (or stickers) would become the system for kerbside waste collection and inorganic collection would be changed to a ring-in service for most ratepayers – including those in Raglan and outlying rural areas - who had kerbside collection. The council was recommending that a pre-paid bag or sticker be developed for the whole district, including Raglan. The price would be set by council, which was

thinking about initially setting it at $1.50 per bag, and getting rid of the half-sized bag. “This sounds like a great price considering our current pre-paid bags are set at $2.80 each [in Raglan], however the $1.50 per bag is not the total cost. The bags will still cost $2.80 but the district ratepayers will pay the $1.30 top up through their rates,” Rick explained. The council wanted to set a low price at the start to lessen the financial pain of the user pays system for ratepayers who currently paid nothing extra for kerbside collection, which was the case for most of the Waikato district. “If council go for the sticker system, people need to be aware that they will have to purchase their bags on top of the $1.50 price of the sticker. Bags currently range from 20-30 cents each.” The proposed changes would affect the waste charge component of WDC rates, with the council wanting to set this at $121.08 across the district, compared with the current $102.58 charge to Raglan residents. Rick was also worried that subsidising the cost of landfill waste would make recycling seem expensive. “Many people and businesses make decisions on finances alone. This [subsidisation] will have serious consequences for the recycling industry,” he said. Rachel Benn

Xtreme’s assessment Rubbish bags That the pre-paid bag system is extended to cover as much of the Waikato District as practical; and that the bags are priced at full cost rather than subsidised by the ratepayer, and that a half-sized bag is offered: “Waste should always be charged to the people who generate it. Equally, those who choose to recycle and divert waste from landfill should be awarded by only paying for what they produce. By having a large proportion of the bag price paid by the ratepayer the producer of waste will be subsidised and the diverter of waste will be penalised,” said Xtreme Zero Waste’s Rick Thorpe. Kerbside Recycle Collection Xtreme supports the extension of the rural kerbside collection of prepaid bags and recyclables. Inorganic collection Xtreme believes inorganic collections are covered through functional reuse centres and are therefore not required in Raglan: “Inorganic collections are being phased out throughout the country as they are wasteful, expensive and abused by industry enjoying free dumping. Inorganic collections are replaced by recycle/reuse centres as we have in Raglan. Ratepayers will pay for this service through their rates whether they use it or not. It is expensive for what the service is,” Rick said. Rates That Raglan rates remain at $102.58 to cover the costs of kerbside recycling and the recycle centre, with no inorganic collection and pre-paid bag subsidy. “This lower rate should be a reward for Raglan residents for the hard work we have all done to minimise waste in the past.” Rachel Benn

Dave and Julie Hanna, from Raglan Ray White, give Tash McGovern (centre) her prize of a trip to Las Vegas following the vendors’ draw at the Bowling Club on Friday.

R

aglan Ray White vendors were kept in suspense longer than intended last Friday night when the big draws for $1000 cash and for a trip for two to Las Vegas kept being unclaimed. Ray White’s Dave and Julie Hanna had about 154 names of customers who had bought or sold a house over the last 12 months or currently had property listed with

them in the draw for the two main prizes. The numbers had to be drawn eight times before the Hanna’s found a winner for the $1000 - one who was actually there to claim the prize – in the form of Grant Cushman. The big prize of a return trip for two to Las Vegas and seven nights’ accommodation at the Hilton, worth about $6000, also had to be drawn five times before being claimed by Tash McGovern. The surprised and delighted Tash then

called her husband Mike at home to tell him the good news: “I think he believes me!” The pair, who had both bought and sold a house over the past year, had visited Las Vegas “years ago” when they were travelling around on their OE. Tash said it would be nice to go back there and they may even take their five-yearold son this time. Mike also had relatives in California that they could visit. Rachel Benn

Judging by the time boats were returning to the weigh station at The Raglan Club, competitors were on the water early. One of the first boats back “Tardis” skippered by Tokoroa dairy farmer Graeme Barr with two mates on board left Kopua at 5 am and returned late morning with a good catch. “Heading out was good but coming back over the bar was a different story. We went to 40 metres or so and generally went wherever the swell took us,” says Graeme. Ecolab spokesperson Stu Winter said the tournament went very well with the bonus for the Raglan community of the competition raising more than $2200 for the Raglan Coast Guard. Chilling Out: Brooke, 10, enjoys a “delicious” 3 Berry Yoghurt Stripe ice block from Dizzy Blocks, tucked in to a cosy corner outside Raglan Surf Co on Wainui Road.

N Raglan Surf Co. is the answer to estled in the garden outside

the summer heat – ice blocks.

Not just your average ice blocks, but ice blocks bursting with real fruit, real flavour and real choice. For Maree Harris, owner and operator of Dizzy Blocks, the decision to start her own ice block cart in Raglan was a simple one. “I love making ice cream and started playing with ice blocks.” So, she started experimenting with different flavours, using “real fruit and vegetables.” “I love that you don’t have to do a lot to them and they’re very easy to portion.” “There’s something unpretentious about them.” Maree marries a range of fruit and vegetable flavours into her icy creations including cucumber and lime, pineapple

and coconut and a flavour she’s dubbed ‘Beets and Berries’ which combines the flavours of strawberry, raspberry, beetroot and orange. “It’s a great way to use fruits and vegetables.” The mum-of-one-plus-one-on-the-way said that her son inspired the natural aspect of her ice blocks. “I just look at what I would give to [him],” Maree said. Dizzy Blocks are available with a range of dietary choices including “about half of them dairy free and I always have one that has an alternative to sugar” where agave or honey are used instead, she said. Maree said she was grateful to the Raglan Surf Co. for the encouragement and support she had received with her little ice block business. Dizzy Blocks are available for $3.50. Marcia Ahern

New shuttle business launches in time for summer W thought of starting their business

hen Emily and Phil Meek first

‘Raglan Shuttle Ltd’ they set their aspirations high and so far, with only a week’s official trading, business is booming. Raglan Shuttle Ltd is a locally focussed private hire and tour company offering individuals and groups transport services around Raglan and further afield. “We’re a 24/7 business just a phone call away giving safe affordable transport options to Auckland airport non-stop, into Hamilton and just about anywhere, as well as at the local level delivering people to and from their homes,” says Emily who handles all the admin for the busy business. The couple had been looking for some time at finding a business that would make best use of Phil’s driving and people skills and they reckon they’ve hit the jackpot with Raglan Shuttle Ltd. “This business definitely ticks all the boxes for us and especially we’re proud to be a local couple working in our local community. If business continues as it has it won’t be long before we’ll be looking at buying another van and offering employment to a local driver; that’s our way of giving back from a community that is supporting us so well,” says Phil. Keeping us all safe over the festive season is a big priority for the couple and already Phil has delivered party-goers safely home in the ‘wee-smalls’ from private parties as well as from Rockit, Orca and Bow Street Depot.

The Raglan Arts Weekend: January 24-25th 2015 R

aglan is ready to rock its sixth successful Arts Weekend – an event drawing summer crowds since 2008. This year, a tantalising combination of art, food, and wine is in store for festival-goers. Original art will be paired with artisan food as the Raglan Arts Weekend launches its very first ‘Little Food Fest’ – a line-up of the very best gastronomic delights from the Waikato region and further afield. Artisan bread, wine, cheese, icecream and more will be temptingly displayed right in the heart of the action at vendor stalls. The Raglan Arts Weekend Guide provides details of over 30 artists exhibiting either at their studios or the Old School. An impressive range of work includes painting, sculpture, photography, jewellery and wearable art.

This work will be on display and available for purchase, and the local artists are always happy to discuss their thoughts and processes. Visitors are warmly invited to the official launch preview event on Friday 23rd January, 6.30pm at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre, where you can meet the artists and view examples of their work. Copies of the official Raglan Arts Weekend Guide are available at the Raglan Information Centre, the Raglan Old School Arts Centre on Stewart Street, at Raglan cafés and galleries and many other outlets throughout the Waikato and Auckland. Check out participating artists’ work via www.facebook.com/raglanart. A fun weekend of art, sun, and delicious artisan food is the perfect way to experience the relaxed, friendly vibe in Raglan; one of New Zealand’s funkiest little seaside towns.

Teaching a primary love for man of many talents H back in the ‘90s but on reflection Andre

e trained as a secondary school teacher

Ngapo thought he could make a greater difference by teaching at an earlier age level.

Andre Ngapo has been teaching at Raglan Area School for over a decade.

10 RAGLAN Chronicle

So this talented teacher-cum songwriter-cum storywriter, who grew up in an extended family and was shaped by strong memories of looking out for his younger cousins, later tagged a diploma in primary teaching onto his degree. And he hasn’t looked back. Now with more than a decade’s teaching at primary and intermediate level at Raglan Area School behind him – and a two-year stint before that at Te Uku School – Andre is still captivated by his young protégés. “I like the wonder and openness of five-year-olds, the humour and depth of a 10-yearold,” he says in weighing up which age group he most likes to teach. Andre, a father of three, says he enjoys working with children because it’s both creative and stimulating and also because he sees it as a “big

service to our world”. Schools are places where human relationships are role-modelled, he explains, so teachers have a huge responsibility. “I remind myself of this every day.” Andre, now in his late 30s, has been on study leave this year but still in and out of the classroom one day a week teaching from year three to eight children where he feels he can best apply his varied skill base. The rest of the week he’s studied Maori through Te Wananga o Aotearoa. Te reo Maori needs as much support as it can get, Andre insists, so it’s a priority area for Ministry of Education study awards. He has already put what he’s learnt this year to good use, having written a couple of songs for a play in te reo Maori that recently toured the country. Eight years ago Andre – an accomplished musician with a songwriting diploma to his name – also took time off from classroom teaching to study again and add some music papers towards a degree. “Creativity is an important way of expressing myself,” he says, “and I knew I needed to develop it.” He’s glad now for the opportunity because as well as having performed with a lot of local bands as percussionist, bass guitarist and vocalist, Andre has been able to put what he learnt into practice in the classroom. He’s taught performing arts, made videos with his pupils – one of which won him a best director award at RAFFA, Raglan’s local arts and film festival – given his pupils both songwriting and creative writing skills and put together three major school productions. “Part of what I bring to teaching is developing an appreciation of the arts,” he explains modestly. Meantime he’s developed his own creative writing skills to win the 2008 Sunday Star-Times short story competition and, last year, a highly commended in the BNZ Literary Awards. His entry ‘Small Galaxy’ was praised by judge Albert Wendt as a lyrical story “about love, longing and regret”. Andre told the Chronicle he feels “elated” at the success of his short stories. The idea of writing for children came from teaching, he confides, and from having his own family. “It confirms that my taking some time out to develop creative pursuits was the right choice.” He now has more than 20 published titles to his credit, including short stories for school journals and for the educational Ready to Read series. He also gets commissioned to write stories for elementary (intermediate) school children in the States, and has a couple of published titles there to show for it. Andre – who’s lived in Raglan for 13 years – says he loves being in a small town and attributes much of his job satisfaction, along with his passion for writing, to the support he gets from the community. Teaching can be very demanding, he adds, especially at times of personal crisis like in recent years when the grandmother who raised him had a massive stroke and later died. “It’s when you need to have key support, and we have that at this (Raglan Area) school.” Andre’s also an educator in a wider context, having trained locally over five years at Te Mauri Tau in working effectively with children – and passing those skills on to caregivers through a series of nonviolent parenting workshops. Also close to his heart is his training as an educator with the Brainwave Trust Aotearoa which looks at research into how childhood experiences affect the brain, and is a programme delivered by Raglan Area School in professional development sessions to staff. Andre Ngapo’s sure come a long way from his teaching beginnings at Melville High. Edith Symes

fter almost a year of fundraising, the Wainui Reserve mountain bike trails project will kick off early April 2015. The $56,000 project, driven by the Raglan Mountain Bike Club, will initially create 4km of family friendly cycling trails with the potential of extending the network to 10km of biking fun. These trails will become a major asset for Raglan, which will encourage to leading a healthy lifestyle and hopefully inspire our young people to take up cycling/ mountainbiking as a sport.
