Dear Santa We have been good. All we would like for Christmas is Sunday morning sleep ins. We have a neighbour who has to mow his lawns or start hammering or using power tools at 8am on Sunday mornings. It would be great if you could bring him a train set or some other really cool present that he could play with quietly on a Sunday morning - at least until 9am. We don’t know exactly where he lives but its somewhere in the lower end of Norrie Ave - between 33 and 43. We think you’ll recognise his house because he must have huge lawns (they take him an hour to mow) and he’s building something really big. Thanks Santa. Love Chrissy and Colin Hodkinson, Raglan

Christmas Elves spread goodwill and cheer It’ll be anything but a silent night tomorrow when the Raglan Christmas Elves tiki-tour the town singing carols outside a dozen or so homes.

We can make your dream home a reality with a new home in any spot...

“We’re a bit of a merry bunch,” says guitarist Dave Maybee who, along with other local parents – some with children in tow – will spend a couple of hours entertaining those in need of a little Christmas cheer. For a few years now the keen group of choristers from Dave’s weekly singing group The Slipped Discs have spread festive goodwill in the neighbourhood before Christmas. “We’re giving,” Dave says, recalling one of last year’s performances which lifted the spirits of a recently widowed woman at home on her own. “She really appreciated it.” The Christmas Elves – among them a doctor, community nurses and a provider of Indian head massage –spend five to 10 minutes at each household, singing a carol or two. They also perform at Raglan Trust Hospital & Rest Home in Manukau Road, which always goes down a treat. And they’re still looking for local residents in need of Christmas cheer come Friday night. *Call Andrew Thompson on 825 5375 and leave a message for a visit, 5-7pm. Edith Symes

The odd person still out and about downtown as the weather and daylight closed in last Saturday was treated to the unusual sight of a local vet chasing down a gorilla in the mist. The bedraggled-looking primate, aka local real estate man Steven O’Byrne, was just pipped at the finish by an equally wet Santa in the shape of vet Mac Keene in the Santa fun run around Raglan’s three bridges. Close behind was another soggy Santa in the form of Mike Hodgson. But this year because of the rain, which came right on cue at the 6pm start at the bottom of Bow Street, there was no barbecue for the first runner home to fire up – only 100 press-ups to do, joked fun run organiser and seasoned athlete Jack Grace. Jack – wearing Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer gear and with his make-up

running in the wet – was off the pace but then he’d been spotted wasting time along the way by doing little reindeer or rain dances to entertain the few onlookers who braved the conditions. Several others straggled in wearing an assortment of sodden festive gear from red pyjama pants to reindeer headbands and Santa suits that’d seen better days. The Santa run got off the ground last year, Jack told the Chronicle, when he and a couple of mates got talking “as you do” over a few beers and came up with the wacky challenge. “I dare you to run around dressed up as Santa,” were the very words, recalls Jack, who thought at the time they may as well raise some money while doing it. So they did, this year and last, with Raglan Food Bank a little better off for their efforts and the dozen or so runners little the worse for wear in this the season of goodwill. Edith Symes

Academic to take up Fulbright Fellowship in US Raglan resident Holly Thorpe looks to have a bright future ahead with her recent selection for a teaching and research position at prestigious Georgetown University in Washington DC, one of the States’ oldest universities. As a recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship – available to one NZ academic every semester– Holly was at the university just a few weeks ago checking it out, and told the Chronicle she was “really excited” to be taking up the Visiting Scholar Award which will see her working with top American students from August to December next year. It is the only university in the country with a Centre of Australian and New Zealand Studies. “My course will provide students with an insight into NZ society,” she says, “through the sociology and history of sport.” For the past five years Holly – a former competition snowboarder herself – has been a senior lecturer in sport and leisure studies at Waikato University. Now she’s looking forward to sharing the Kiwi passion for sport with US students, familiarising them with iconic figures such as Sir Edmund Hillary and A J Hackett. Holly will teach the impact on NZ

society of sporting controversies, ranging from the 1981 Springbok Tour to the recent adidas All Blacks haka advertisement. Netball and the Rugby World Cup will get a look-in too, she adds – “sports and events a lot of Americans have no idea about”. The Fulbright scholarships “build connections” between countries, explains Holly, who as well as teaching the undergraduate course on sport will also research children and young persons’ involvement in extreme sports of both NZ and the US. She’s published multiple books and articles on extreme sports, her research taking her from Queenstown’s Winter Games to the Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, and the Winter X Games in France. Born of surfing and windsurfing parents, Holly grew up in Gisborne’s surf-skate culture and later studied at Otago University, transferring to Waikato for her doctorate. Although she’s travelled extensively, the 30year-old has been based for the past seven years in Raglan where biking, running and especially yoga are her current passions. “I love movement,” says Holly, who also still snowboards. And she loves living in Raglan – it’s “so inspiring” she says, with its share of academics, athletes and artists.

Holly Thorpe The Fulbright award will turn Holly into sporting ambassador, with American students set to get a glimpse of how the Kiwi passion for sport has made us into who we are today. She is among notable Kiwi scholars and artists to have received the award. Others include historians Michael King and James Belich, poet Bill Manhire and playwright Roger Hall. Two years ago Holly received a Leverhulme Visiting Scholar Fellowship, and spent nine months at Brighton University in the UK. Edith Symes

Your skin will love you for it, also have on hand some aloe vera gel for the sunburn that is bound to happen • If you are prone to coldsores take some lysine as a preventative, extra zinc and a good lip balm will also help • Bothered by sandflies? Use a herbal insect repellent, we make one here that is safe for kids. You could also burn a citronella candle • Take the time to enjoy our famous Raglan sunsets! Home swept Police hoping for happy holidays under carpet Raglan’s set to have swarms of tourists and holidaymakers descend on the town at this time of year but local police don’t expect too many problems over Christmas-New Year.

An elderly Lily Street resident is the latest Raglan homeowner to get a shock – according to Quotable Value she doesn’t have a home.

And that, they say, is because unlike beach resorts on the East Coast, Raglan typically attracts “family-oriented” visitors. Even so, don’t tempt fate by leaving valuables in unlocked cars, warns Sergeant Rob Pierce. And don’t hide car keys on the front tyre of your car – it’s just too obvious. The Chronicle heard these tips and more last week, as did Raglan Chamber of Commerce at its final meeting for the year with representatives from Raglan

When she opened her recent revaluation notice she found a land value was shown, but the improvements were listed as zero. Raglan Community Board chairman Rodger Gallagher said the case appeared to be another data quality issue. The house had been built a couple of years and showed up on Google Earth, but was not visible from the road and so a QV drive-by might not have revealed its existence. He said the matter was very stressful for the woman concerned, who didn’t know what to do. While he’d printed out an objection form and explained how to fill in and submit it, QV staff had gone out to the property last Friday to sort things and no objection was now necessary. Council general manager strategy and support Tony Whittaker said the consent for the dwelling on the property was closed off as being complete in October 2008 without being valued by the council’s previous valuations provider, VAMS. “Hence there was no recognition of a building which is why it hasn’t been picked up.” Rodger said while it was pleasing QV had acted promptly in this case, he was concerned about the data quality across their whole revaluation of the district. “QV seem unaware of standard modern computer tools that can detect and highlight data quality problems so they can be resolved before a member of the public makes a complaint,” he said. “It seems they have not run a data match against council’s building consent database. This means the integrity of the whole valuation database is suspect.” He agreed an earlier case in Manukau Road, where the improvements value of a property fell by about two thirds, was probably a similar problem. In that case an old bach was completely built over with a three-bedroom house. The owners believe the $40,000 figure in their new valuation relates to the original bach and that the rebuild has somehow not been picked up. A.T.

Waikato District Council decided to take a step back and begin consulting stakeholders afresh on any possible future development of Raglan’s CBD and last week staff from Council’s strategy and planning team met with Iwi to gather their thinking on sites of historical significance in Raglan’s centre. For planning purposes Council has defined the CBD as the area inside Cliff, James, Bankart and Wi Neera Streets. Following strong community feedback on the controversial Variation 15 structure plan development for the town, Waikato District Council decided in February to withdraw the plan, leaving the way open to talk again with key interest groups, including the Community Board, the Chamber of

planning consultants Opus to assess sites of significance to Europeans, no provision was made in that process to include perspectives from Maori. “We want to use this time well and get your feedback directly about the places that matter to you. No decisions have been made and we need to ask ourselves whether any expansion is needed at all”, said Troy Martin from Council. Hinemoa Rossi suggested the first thing to do was for Maori to meet together and talk among themselves to define the sites of importance, then to come to the table and meet with Council planners. While not inside the CBD, the area over the walk-bridge at Kopua Domain was discussed as being of real significance and should not be overlooked. Sue Russell

Commerce and Iwi/Hapu. Strategy Support team leader Jenny Vernon said she thought it “just made sense” for Council and local Maori to deal directly with each other, a decision supported by those attending the meeting, including Waikato Ward Councillor Clint Baddeley. “I don’t think we really need a new structure plan. Much better to gather the information directly from stakeholders and use it to inform our long-term planning”, said Mr Baddeley. Among topics touched-on were the status of some sites along Wi Neera Street, possible expansion of car-parking spaces in James Street, reducing the maximum height of any new commercial buildings, the existing industrial sites along Park Drive and making Cliff Street one-way. While Council had earlier used town-

for the top of the Night Owls’ vehicle. Also at the meeting networking between businesses via a “telephone tree” was encouraged, with neighbouring shops swapping contacts and organising themselves into a phone pyramid by which information is quickly distributed. One person at the top of the pyramid, for instance, would call two people who each call two more, and so on. Meantime, Raglan police will work with Waikato District Council to uphold the blanket liquor ban in public places, which runs from December 23 through to January 6. The controversial ban extends over a wide area, taking in the likes of Lorenzen Bay, Wainui Reserve, Manu Bay, Whale Bay, Papanui Point and Ruapuke Beach. Edith Symes

police and the volunteer Night Owls organisation advising on security. The Night Owls “do a great job” as eyes and ears for the local police, says Sergeant Pierce, patrolling the streets in a sponsored vehicle at random hours after dark when in the past many crimes have been committed. They are in “direct contact with us,” he adds, and will also keep an eye on private homes if residents drop into the station with dates before they go on holiday. One business at Tuesday’s chamber meeting pledged $50 per month to the Night Owls for even better security coverage in town, Raglan Real Estate’s Dave Hanna told the Chronicle. That was “significant”, said patrol chairman Don Sutton, and would help the organisation finance an infra-red camera

Over $1000 raised for famine relief Forty beautiful, colourful platters made by the children of Whaingaroa had friends and family going backwards and forwards to the Old School to check their bids in the 4-day silent auction, and a last minute rush left several bidders disappointed when they discovered they had missed out! The fundraiser, organized by Natasha and Joseph Rau was the culmination of weeks of hard work, as the platters were designed, decorated and fired. Natasha and Joseph would like to thank the community for their support of the Clay Platter Auction and Art Exhibition. All 40 platters were sold and over $1000 was raised for famine relief in the Horn of Africa. “We would like to thank parents and children for their enthusiasm, generosity and support. A special thanks to Suzanne, Tony Sly, Jacqueline at the Old School Arts Centre, Lisa at Trade Aid and our good friend Aaron Bloomfield for the live music. The exhibition was also an outstanding showcase for the Kids Class sculptures.”

OPINION: A Raglan Rumination by Albert Einsteinlager Take a bow, Waikato. It is now official. We are the coolest region in New Zealand. If you are a tourist, scratching your head and wondering where to head down under, the answer is now crystal clear. The mighty Waikato is your destination. You may ask: How can Albert make such a lofty claim? Let me explain........... Trade Me has come out with their 2011 Top 10 “searched- for items” categorised by region. Here are the results for the top two items...... Rest of NZ (other than the Waikato): No.1: phones/i pads/i pods. No.2: Karen Walker/Trelise Cooper clothing. Mighty Waikato: No.1: Barbeques No.2: Outdoor furniture. Now these results enable us to make certain claims . We are the lords of good Kiwi bloke’ism.

We are the custodians of jandals, T shirts and cold beers on the deck. We can look over the fence at our fellow Kiwis wearing their designer clothes and talking on their i phones and feel the slight stirrings of pity for their shallow yearnings. More importantly here in the Waikato we have obviously taken it upon our mighty shoulders to burden the responsibility of saving the human species (or at least all peoples living in the Western World) It is well known within Darwinian circles that human beings need personal interaction for species growth and development. What better way to achieve this than by conversing with your mates on a smart outdoor lounger while cooking up a storm on the new b-b-q. We will have the problems of the world sorted before the rest of NZ can even download their new apps and squeeze into their new threads. Stay real Waikato. You are all gems.

ONE MORE PINT FOR THE ROAD

BETTLE9409

Recently, District Health Board and Council health compliance and registration issues have meant that we have to work within very strict guidelines and this ensures water is delivered, meeting New Zealand Drinking - water Standards. When water is delivered into dirty tanks problems with contamination and discolouration can occur. Water tanks need to be cleaned out periodically because roof water can become contaminated with a variety of chemicals and micro-organisms and we recommend, that when the tank gets low it is cleaned out and flushed prior to a fill. We do offer a tank cleaning service also but during the busy season bookings for this become difficult to schedule to coincide with your empty tank so we recommend checking early. We also urge potential customers to check that access to the tank for a large truck is possible. A lot of drives around Raglan are difficult to use because of overhanging trees, loose metal on steep sections and tight turns. While we do have long hoses, in some cases even this is not enough. During a hot dry summer the risk of fire is also an issue and should one occur it is reassuring to the Fire Service to have a tank of water on hand. We have been operating this business for the last 4 years and offer a prompt seven day a week service. Call Peter on 825 7882 or 0274 933576 to schedule a tank clean or water delivery. P Storey

If you drink and drive you are more likely to crash. Alcohol impairs your ability to drive, end of story.

Your 12 page pullout guide to what’s happening in Raglan over the holiday period

Let’s go surfin’ now …Everybody’s learning how... With the Raglan Surfing School…

This Endless Summer Season marks the 13th anniversary of Raglan’s original surf school operator the Raglan Surfing School.

From humble beginnings operating from the back of a converted Holden ambulance, the Surf School has now been recognised as one of the Top 10 Adventure Activities in New Zealand by CNN. The Surf School operates year round from it’s base in the beautiful surrounds of the Karioi Outdoor Adventure Centre located in Whale Bay. The Centre offers the Surf School’s clients an opportunity to experience more than just a great time in the water but a chance of experiencing a taste of the surfing lifestyle as well. Surfing accommodation is also available from Sleeping Lady Lodgings and ranges from campervan sites, backpackers to upmarket holiday homes overlooking the surf at Whale Bay. Surf lessons are offered at 9am and 2pm everyday throughout the summer season and start at the Karioi Lodge. The 3 hour lessons include water and beach safety, soft surfboard and wetsuit hire and free transportation from

anywhere to and from Raglan town. Great value and service! The Surf School’s managers are top surfers, Zennor (the “Zen Master”) Wernham and Chris (“Bugsy”) Malone who oversee their crew of experienced Surfing NZ qualified coaches. Their passion translates to their students getting “stoked” and “frothing” while learning to ride the great waves of Raglan. The Surf School is also a one stop shop for surfboard and wetsuit rentals. A wide range of new equipment is now available for hire. From now until the end of April the Raglan Surf School’s surfboard and wetsuit rental trailer will be available on Raglan’s Ngarunui beach. Catwalk to horse-treks: Penny finds model life at Ruapuke Perhaps it was Penny Knuiman’s early grooming as a model when she was taught how to be powerful as well as feminine that stood her in good stead for the rugged Ruapuke lifestyle she leads today. Whatever, the former international model cum horsewoman loves the contrasts that life with her husband Wayne and their three children offers. “It’s all about balance really, isn’t it? she asks, already knowing the answer. As she chats with the Chronicle at a Raglan cafe Penny is juggling three-year-old Star on her lap while Ziggy, 12, tries to cheer his little sister up after her late afternoon sleep. Meanwhile 16-year-old River comes

and goes with her mother’s eftpos card. The family’s in town for Christmas in the Park, and Wayne is happy to take the photos as the interview winds up.

rough and beautiful beaches, she adds, and at Wild Coast the couple reckon they’ve tailormade “the perfect ride and the perfect length.

Penny and Wayne together have carved out a unique lifestyle for themselves over 15 years of living in the backblocks at Ruapuke, 18 winding kilometres from Raglan. They run Wild Coast cabins and horse treks from their home there and it’s one of only a few places in the country where the horse-mad can actually race along the beach.

They’ve also built two Wild Coast cabins with superb sea views beyond a beautiful valley. Penny admits it’s a great lifestyle choice – “hard work, but what isn’t? she asks.

In fact, says Penny, tourists from Europe take riding lessons specifically to come to New Zealand and ride on the beach – an indulgence prohibited by law on beaches in England. They are attracted to our “rugged,

It’s all a far cry from Penny’s earlier life as a successful international model which started in Sydney after first modelling in Auckland when she was barely out of school. Penny, now 42, attributes her success to two modelling courses she did as a 14-year-old through Doreen Morrison, a Melburnian who ran Morrison Models in Auckland for 20 years. She says Doreen, who died in 2005, was “an incredible, wonderful woman teaching girls how to be feminine and powerful.

From Sydney Penny’s flourishing career took her to Paris, New York, Germany, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Japan. But every four or five months, she says, she’d return home to Woodhill, northwest of Auckland, where she’d grown up on a lifestyle block with enough space for a horse.

Penny Knuiman the beach, Penny reflects how they needed to create something to “make the isolation wonderful. Wayne too had come from a background of riding and training horses so that’s exactly what he does, returning a little reluctantly to building when needs must.

Penny reflects how they needed to create something to “make the isolation wonderful

Meantime she’d also met Wayne. It was 1989 when they bought a housetruck and lived at Muriwai, where they also married 20 years ago. “[It was] easy for me, says Penny, “to pack up and go overseas again. Wayne was working on yachts and we were both doing our own thing. But after a decade of modelling from the ‘80s to the ‘90s, Penny had had enough travelling and at 26 came home, pregnant with their daughter River. “We wanted property, she says. They ended up coming to Ruapuke on a wild, windy day with River just nine weeks old and in a baby sling. They bought their land, towed a caravan up the hill, tried living in it for a year – and have been there ever since in their own home built by Wayne, a builder. “We just love it, Penny says. “It’s one of the most wonderful places. And despite the isolation, Penny’s given birth to both Ziggy and Star there. “I had to be at home, she says, believing that’s where women are at their “most powerful. Now with 17 horses to groom and take trekking through the bush and down onto

For Penny, the lifestyle at Ruapuke seems to fit well with her other more glamorous pursuits. While to-ing and fro-ing over the years to Auckland for modelling work – which also led to a 12-episode stint as garden host and behind-the-scenes designer on TV3’s ‘DIY Rescue’ – she also teamed up at one stage with an old friend and together the two created their own label, ‘Flaxen’, in Raglan. “It was so much fun, says Penny. The pair did clothing parties and road trips everywhere before Penny opted out a few years ago. It was about the time Penny had Star and she needed to “re-evaluate things and focus on her family. But now there’s a decade-old dream to pursue, one which she says will come together early next year. Penny’s starting up a modelling school through an agency in Auckland. Teaching deportment, selfconfidence and modelling – both male and female – Penny says it’s a way to give back to the industry that has supported her. She’s looking forward to the challenge while remaining firmly grounded at Ruapuke. With her love of space and family it all “works perfectly, she says. Edith Symes

On the 25th of November, Raglan Area School was involved in an awards process reflection to see if we met the standard for an Enviroschools silver award. It was a great day for students and teachers sharing all of the amazing things they have been doing in terms of environmental sustainability. There were certain criteria to meet such as; empowered students, learning for sustainability, Maori perspectives, diversity of people and cultures and sustainable communities. The silver award statement that can be found on the Enviroschool’s website http://www.enviroschools.org.nz/. It was eight years ago that the school achieved the bronze award, so we are very happy to now be recipients of the Silver Award. We are also excited that our native plant nursery is nearly finished and we will be growing our own plants to restore the school peninsula, as part of our Peninsula Restoration Project.

Seed of the month: Corn Sow every few weeks November to February for regular supply. Plant in blocks, rather than rows, for best pollination. Open pollinated varieties are far more nutritious than hybrids.

Veg of the Month: Beans Thousands of varieties exist. Some climb, some creep and some just sit there, bushy. They can be eaten fresh or dried, and span a huge range of colours. Many varieties at seed bank.

A Rocha Aotearoa New Zealand (ARANZ), together with Te Whakaoranga o Karioi (TWOK), and the Raglan Community. The project involves eradication of all mammalian pests (such as possums, stoats and rats) on Mt Karioi. In September 2011 fifty stoat traps were deployed for the first time, by volunteers, along the length of the main track that crosses the maunga. The project aims to establish stoat control over the entire mountain, with the potential of eventually reintroducing native species i.e. kiwi and kaka. The project has led to regular community and student involvement, and field trips to Karioi, from Raglan Area School, with classes participating in biodiversity field trips on the lower slopes of the maunga. It’s been a real inspiration for us to have the community’s participation, support and enthusiasm. If you’re interested in volunteering, contact Kristel at new.zealand@arocha.org

Waitetuna
Sculpture
Park Learning at Waitetuna school in term 4 was based around innovation. Students were engaged in problem solving, and part of this focus was an excursion to the Morrinsville Sculpture Park. Inspired by the artwork they saw, they returned to school inspired to get creative and make some things to improve the visual environment around the school. The juniors have been busy making mosaics out of old tiles and plan to display them on the walls around the school . In the middle room, a wide variety of old materials have been collected to make their wonderful art pieces, including one which is made entirely out of old jandals and chicken wire. Meanwhile in the senior room, old poles are been transformed using left over paints, into carefully decorated totem poles. This is art at its best, and the students have successfully created their own sculptures, out of mostly reused materials, which will be on display around the school.

Santa Clause comes to Raglan Community House Last Friday morning, Santa slipped quietly into the Community House to meet with the kindy kids who were not going to be able to make the main event. The children sang a song for Santa and presented a huge basket of hand made, individually wrapped biscuits to the Community House for us to pass on to the Foodbank. They had been very busy and done a wonderful job - what a fantastic gift for our community. Then at at 2pm Santa came back to the Community House. He arrived in a red, open top Buick and was definitely in summer mode wearing red boardshorts (with sheepskin trim) and a very colourful summer shirt. With shades

in hand and jandals on his feet he told us he had just dropped in before heading out for a quick surf - a well needed break in his very busy schedule. There were lots of excited children waiting to greet Santa and he spent the next hour and a half catching up on present requests and having his photo taken with everyone. There was plenty of food and drink to keep the big and little occupied while they patiently waited for their time with Santa - there wasn’t much left of the sausage rolls, fairy bread, cheerios, chippes, lollies and Christmas cake! A small gift was given to every child and everyone seemed to have a great time - including the staff at the House!

First Marlin spotted for the season

Raglan fishing report by the Raglan Wharf Seagull Yes, we have the first Marlin sighting of this season. The fish was working baitfish out the back of Jackson’s Reef. Fishing off our coast has been very good over the past month, with most boats coming in with an ample feed. Snapper and good size gurnard. In

the mix are also kahawai and trevally, with even blue cod and tarakihi, if you are fishing over a bit of foul ground. Early for this season, large kingfish have been seen over reefs, Jackson’s, 21 and 23, and have been caught out on the sand on cut baits. Fishing spots today are out off Carters beach at 45m, also the same

depth down off Ruapuke beach to the south of Jackson’s Reef. Look for birds working at sea, for that is worth a stop too. Use a ledger rig with enough weight to just get you to the bottom. Sharp best quality hooks and fresh baits, and you will be in! The Raglan Bar is on the harbour leads, use the white sector light for boat position when crossing, Radio Coastguard Channel 86 for your Bar crossing and ensure all crew have correctly fitted lifejackets on. Manu Bay has a sand bar off the ramp. In some swells and tides this will break and is dangerous. When leaving the ramp, get your vessel up to speed and be alert for a peaking/breaking swell. The same applies when coming in, you can surf you boat down these, and your attention could be on the boats waiting for their trailers. Again be alert and wear those life jackets until you step onto land. Around and up harbour there are still good size yellow belly flounder and mullet to be caught. Stingarays are in close also chasing these fish. If setting a net, my advice is do it at low tide, stay in attendance, and you will catch your feed in the first three hours of the tide. Then leave. The later part of the tide you will end up with a ray in your net which is a hassle. The Raglan Sports Fishing Club has it’s Manu Bay Tournament on Sunday of the Auckland Anniversary weekend and is a great family fishing day out. Take a feed, enjoy your day at sea, practice safe boating procedures as a family and have fun. See you out there.

Funky and functional homes

4195 TRENZ Homes used to be called Kitset Homes but Stu Tudor, the Waikato licensee, says the new name is more fitting to what we create now-stylish and trendy new homes. Trenz Homes has gained an excellent reputation working in coastal areas like Raglan and Mangawhai and remote places like Kawhia and Waiheke Island. The team at TRENZ Homes specialise in offering innovative housing solutions. After completing many builds in New Zealand, TRENZ Homes now build in the Pacific Island locations like Rarotonga, Samoa, and Fiji as well. “We build funky and functional homes,” Stu says. “These days people want more than just a traditional home. Plans are completely customized, basically we can design and build exactly what you want. “ In regard to the labour component you can do as much or as little as you want. We’ll start with the lockable shell and go from there” he says. Stu has been in the building industry for more than 45 years, so has the experience, knowledge and contact base to assist with any

building project no matter how large or small. “We can organise the whole package or up to any stage you want,” Stu says. “You can be involved as much as or as little as you want to be.” TRENZ Homes supply 10 square metre transportable sleep-outs through to four bedroom 330-plus square metre luxury homes. We can also assist with your paperwork, and help you work through the consent process. TRENZ Homes takes pride in keeping up with the latest building trends and developmentsincluding the use of steel framing if that’s what the client wants. Minor dwellings are great if you need to accommodate extended family or seek rent for extra income. TRENZ Homes’ wide range of plans and designs are flexible and can be adapted to suit your needs, and importantly they are happy to quote according to your requirements. “ New homes will never be as cheap to build as they are today.” says Stu

Recycling Guide for Holiday Makers

Raglan is a small town, with big ideas about zero waste and we’re into recycling. We would really like our !"#$%&'()&*+,-(."(/"$0(1-("0(.!$-(/"1,0+'2(3&-.('+&,(4&5#&0(%$6+,.+%(789(":($.-(;&-.+(&;&'(:,")(#&0%<##=(.!,"15!( reducing, reusing, recycling and composting. Our recycling and waste services are run by Xtreme Waste a community group which has been in operation since 2000 – please go to www.xtremewaste.org.nz and www.facebook.com/xtremewaste

How to Recycle on holiday? It’s easy!

Recycling when out and about. We have public recycling bins in the town and in the park and at the beach and a recycling drop off container behind Te Uku store. Please recycle where ever you can. Look out for the Love NZ bins and recycling symbols. Please also pick up any litter and dispose of it carefully. Litter can end up blowing into the sea, where it is dangerous for swimmers and wildlife. We also have a kerbside collection (ask your holiday house owner for more information) or check out the Green Goss page in this edition of the Raglan Chronicle. If you need to dispose of rubbish we have a prepaid rubbish bag system and these bags can be bought locally. The Raglan Recycling Centre and Reuse Shop – 186 Te Hutewai Road – bring your RECYCLING here for FREE No trip to Raglan is complete without a trip to the Raglan Recycling Centre (also known locally as the Raglan Mall). Our reuse shop is bursting at the seams with reusable goods and we have a really well stocked book shop. If you need something for your holiday, we may just have it. 07 825 0017 (shop).
