Raglan team awake to challenges of epic walk

Raglan Wahine team from left: Trina Regnier, Rachel Bailey, Ani Brunet and Sharlene Poole gather to discuss a training regime for 100km walk

The  boot’s  well  and  truly  on  the  other  foot  for  Sharlene  Poole  as  she  and  three  other  Raglan  women  train  up  for  a  charity  event  in  which  they’ll  have  to  walk  100  kilometres  in  24  hours. Sharlene  â€“  better  known  around  town,  and  the  country,  as  the  baby  whisperer  â€“  is  usually  preoccupied  with  issues  like  getting  new  parents  and  their  babies  a  good  night’s  sleep.   But  for  the  Oxfam  Trailwalker  it’s  the  staying  awake  all  night  that  she  expects  to  really  test  the  mettle  of  the  Raglan  quartet. “It’s  a  massive  challenge,â€?  Sharlene  admits  of  the  upcoming  endurance  walk,  which  skirts  the  shores  of  Lake  Taupo. The  entry  of  a  Raglan  team  in  what’s  described  as  â€œthe  world’s  greatest  team  challengeâ€?  came  about  after  Sharlene  and  friend  Rachel  Bailey  of  Tonic  Hairdressing  biked  around  the  mountain,  completing  last  year’s  Karioi  Classic. The  pair  then  looked  about  for  another  challenge  they  could  take  on  â€“  one  not  just  for  themselves  this  time,  Sharlene  told  the  Chronicle,  but  also  for  a  worthwhile  cause. It  was  the  Oxfam  Trailwalker  that  captured  Sharlene’s  imagination  as  she Â

searched  online.  In  New  Zealand,  Oxfam  works  as  part  of  the  global  network  by  UDLVLQJ PRQH\ IRU IDPLOLHV ÂżJKWLQJ SRYHUW\ LQ 6RXWKHDVW $VLD DQG WKH 3DFLÂżF “We  all  love  visiting  these  islands  but  PDQ\ RI WKHP QHHG KHOS ÂżQDQFLDOO\ WR improve  or  create  better  daily  resources  in  education  and  sanitation,â€?  says  Sharlene. So  she  and  Rachel,  along  with  local  yoga  teacher  Ani  Brunet  and  Te  Mata  School  deputy  principal  Trina  Regnier,  joined  forces  and  have  started  training  with  a  vengeance. Councillor’s Column The  New  Year  is  well  underway  with  long  spells  of  warm,  sunny  weather  attracting  unprecedented  numbers  of  visitors  through  the  holiday  season  and  particularly  on  weekends  and  public  holidays  â€“  Raglan’s  attractions  are  more  popular  than  ever.   Although  this  puts  pressure  on  our  community  we  cope  well  and  it  is  good  to  hear  from  police  reports  that  overall  behaviour  has  been  good.   Thinking  about  community  response  brings  me  to  an  issue  that  needs  greater  awareness  from  us  all  and  that  is  civil  defence.   The  Waikato  District  Council  has  responsibility  for  civil  defence  emergency  management  and  in  the  event  of  an  emergency  our  police  and  emergency  services  are  prepared  to  act.   One  of  the  areas  that  needs  more  community  involvement  is  neighbourhood  support. I  am  hopeful  that  in  the  near  future  an  emergency  response  plan  for  Raglan  will  be  distributed  but  in  the  meantime  if  you  would  like  to  be  part  of  a  neighbourhood  support  group  or  if  you  need  to  pass  on  your  needs/circumstances  please  make  contact  with  Constable  Raewyn  McLachlan  or  Kathy  Gilbert  at  Raglan  Police  Station  (825  8200). In  my  last  column  I  noted  that  the  Raglan  Sunday  bus  issue  was  still  being  worked  through  and  since  then  there  have  been  a  number  of  meetings  on  the  topic.   Council  has  supported  the  funding  of  a  service  that  will  be  managed  by  the  Chamber  of  Commerce.   This  could  be  the  forerunner  of  how  bus  services  could  be  operated  in  small  communities  in  the  future  as  public  transport  funding  is  reduced  by  government. In  closing,  council  has  a  number  of  bylaw  reviews  in  2013  including  district  speed  limits,  water  supply,  keeping  of  animals,  dog  control,  liquor  control  and  others.   A  pretty  busy  year  ahead‌.
