Letters www.traciehphotography.co.nz To  the  Editor, I’m  writing  in  response  to  your  request  for  feedback  on  the  dog  debate  within  Raglan’s  CBD. As  a  dog  lover,  dog  adviser  and  blogger  www.bestpuppypost.com  I  want  to  share  with  you  and  your  readers  my  experience  on  a  dog  attack  in  downtown  Raglan. Although  I  am  not  a  resident  of  Raglan,  my  wife  and  I  have  been  holidaying  in  Raglan  for  weeks  at  a  time  every  summer  for  over  10  years. In  February  2014,  while  enjoying  a  meal  on  the  balcony  at  the  Harbour  View  Hotel,  we  noticed  a  family  of  German  tourists  petting  a  tail-wagging,  friendly  looking  dog  in  the  back  of  a  nearby  ute.  The  owner  of  the  dog  talked  to  the  kids  and  expounded  on  the  calm  and  good-nature  attributes  of  the  breed.  He  encouraged  the  children  to  pet  it  and  the  dog  loved  the  attention  they  were  eagerly  pouring  out  on  the  pooch. After  thanking  the  farmer  for  letting  the  kids  engage  with  the  dog,  the  owner  and  the  parents  then  began  walking  away  towards  the  supermarket.  The  smallest  of  the  kids,  who  looked  about  8  years  old,  continued  petting  the  dog  for  just  a  few  moments.  At  that  point,  I  noticed  the  dog’s  body  language  change  and,  with  a  word  of  caution  on  the  tip  of  my  tongue,  without  warning  the  dog  lunged  forward  and  bit  the  little  girl  right  on  the  face. Screaming  with  fright  and  clutching  her  bloody  face  with  her  hands,  she  ran  to  her  shocked  parents. Being  that  I  witnessed  what  happened,  I  approached  the  parents  and  dog  owner  to  give  an  account  of  what  transpired.  Although  the  parents  were  stunned  at  this  attack  on  their  child,  the  owner  of  the  dog  was  absolutely  PRUWLÂżHG ZKR ZHQW RQ WR VD\ WKDW KLV dog  had  â€œnever  done  anything  like  that Â

in  its  lifeâ€?.  There  was  a  nasty  gash  just  below  the  child’s  eye  which  would  PRVW GHÂżQLWHO\ KDYH UHTXLUHG VWLWFKHV The  moral  of  this  story,  at  least  to  my  mind,  is  that  animals  are  unpredictable.  Although  there  are  good  dogs  and  bad  dogs,  or  perhaps  better  described  as  good  dog  owners  and  bad  dog  owners,  even  the  friendliest  of  dogs  has  the  potential  do  act  out  of  character  if  he/she  feels  intimidated,  insecure,  or  threatened. We  all  love  our  dogs  and  they  are  a  huge  part  of  our  lives  and  families,  but  having  a  no-dog  zone  in  Raglan  is  progressive,  responsible  and  commendable. I  totally  sympathize  with  the  inconvenience  this  may  be  for  local  dog  owners  with  â€œfriendlyâ€?  dogs,  but  let’s  not  forget  that  the  â€œfriendlyâ€?  dog  in  this  story  was  the  cause  of  a  serious  face  bite  on  a  little  girl  who  will  probably  wear  a  reminder  scar  for  the  rest  of  her  life. Peter  Gehr,  Regular  Raglan  holiday  maker. To  the  Editor  I  was  the  third  person  to  be  bitten  by  a  dog  outside  the  doors  of  the  Raglan  Bakery  in  the  2003  tourism  off- season  (do  we  have  one  these  days?)   The  sharp  toothed  and  confused  dog  was  on  a  leash  held  by  a  young  girlfriend  of  the  dog  owner,  so  far  as  I  recall,  and  onlookers  were  shouting  at  her  to  remove  it  from  the  footpath.   It  was  not  a  good  experience,  and  I  joined  the  queue  at  West  Coast  Health  seeking  medical  attention.    Look  after  your  dogs.    Their  natural  habitat  is  not  in  the  mainstreet  of  Raglan,  posing  a  ULVN WR WKHPVHOYHV FKLOGUHQ WUDIÂżF hygiene  etc Sincerely, Lesley  Syme,  Raglan  Ward  Councillor  2001-2004 Weather Map

Aeronavics’ online share campaign proving popular

General manager and director Linda Bulk with one of Aeronavic’s drones.

To  raise  money  for  the  company’s  future  development,  an  equity  crowdfunding  campaign  for  the  drone  design  and  manufacturing  was  launched  with  the  aim  of  raising  between  $750,000  and  $1.5  million. Aeronavics  general  manager  and  director  Linda  Bulk  said  the  initial  $750,000  target  was  reached  within  just  three  days  of  the  offer  opening,  and  the  campaign  had  now  become  the  largest  equity  crowdfunding  bid  in  New  Zealand  to  date. Having  already  attracted  nearly  200  investors,  the  offer  would  close  on  March  14  or  when  Aeronavics  hit  its  $1.5  million  cap. “We  knew  this  would  be  popular  but Â

we  had  no  idea  it  would  go  so  fast‌  we’re  breaking  records  in  New  Zealand,â€?  she  said. Under  the  new  Financial  Markets  Conduct  Act,  New  Zealand  companies  could  raise  a  maximum  of  $2  million  by  offering  shares  to  the  public  through  a  licensed  provider. Aeronavics,  whose  customers  include  NASA,  Disney  and  DreamWorks,  chose  this  way  of  raising  money  so  that  ordinary  New  Zealanders,  as  well  as  companies  and  serious  investors,  had  the  chance  to  buy  into  the  company,  with  a  minimum  investment  of  $1000  (at  $1  a  share).   â€œIt  [the  money  raised]  will  be  directly  invested  in  the  company  to  make  it  a  more  valuable  company  and  a  bigger  company,â€?  Linda  explained. The  company  knew  its  drones  or  remotely  piloted  aerial  systems  (RPAS)  -  which  were  targeted  predominantly  at  the  commericial  sectors  of  agriculture,  JRYHUQPHQW VHUYLFHV PHGLD DQG ÂżOP DQG

Double header rocks Club Waitangi Weekend 2015 saw young and old come out to the Raglan Club as they hosted a great night of world class music from Nathan Haines band and Sola Rosa. Nathan haines returned to Raglan following a very special 2014 concert and brought with him an amazing group of musicians and singers, which included Kevin Mark Trail and Tama Waipara. The crowds turned out for this double header with a capacity audience dancing the night away. After a coin toss Sola Rosa took to WKH 5DJODQ VWDJH ¿UVW DQG SURGXFHG D performance they are known for all over the world - with Kevin Mark Trail and Cheree Mathieson singing material from Sola Rosa ‘s new album Magnetic. The summer of 2014 was described

by a Raglan local as having a feeling of being incomplete, as Sola Rosa hadn’t played in the town. 2015 won’t have that feeling. A special thanks to the great line up of The Nathan Haines Band, including brother Joel, an amazing talent on guitar, amply supported by Mickey Ututaonga on drums and Marika Hodgkinson on bass. Tama Waipara stunned the audience with an amazing voice, illustrated to full effect with his powerful rendition of his song “The Hunter”. Rikki Morris on sound and Michael Knapp’s (The Warratahs) lighting ensured the sound and lighting was of the highest standard to complete the evening. Local promoter Tom McCormick is already planning next years Waitangi Music Weekend.

Opinion: War‌‌what is good for? By Albert Einsteinlager

We  are  already  well  into  the  015  and  pretty  depressing  to  note  that  some  things  don’t  change.  War  still  rages  throughout  the  world.  People  get  bombed,  shot  and  generally  messed  up.  After  deliberating  over  a  couple  of  wines  I  have  come  up  with  a  plan.  Hopefully  all  warmongrels  will  take  heed.  If  this  sounds  rather  simplistic  then  you  are  right.   All  the  best  solutions  are  simple.  Forget  the  tricky  ones.  They  generally  take  way  too  much  time  and  effort. What  we  need  to  do  is  completely  remove  the  word  â€œWarâ€?  from  the  lexicon  of  our  language.  It  needs  to  be  replaced  by  the  word  â€œSkirmish.â€?   If  aggressive  intent  has  to  be  acted  on,  then  the  act  of  skirmish  has  to  be  the  preferred  method  of  resolution. Take  your  mind  back  to  a  simpler  time.   Life  in  the  playground.  There  has  always Â

EHHQ IULFWLRQ DQG HJR GULYHQ ÂżJKWV in  the  playground.   Forever.   But  up  until  recently  this  has  usually  been  resolved  with  a  bit  of  a  skirmish.  A  stand  off.  A  lot  of  shouting  and  shoving.   But  now  you  read  about  guns  and  knives  and  gangland  deaths.  A  turf  war.  There  is  that  word  again.  Shrouded  in  death. My  cousin  used  to  work  in  Papua  New  Guinea.  He  would  return  with  VRPH JUHDW ÂżUHVLGH \DUQV +H WROG me  how  two  villages  were  arguing  over  something.  Maybe  someone  had  coveted  his  neighbour’s  ox.  So  they  all  convened  on  a  certain  GD\ UHVSOHQGHQW LQ WKHLU ÂżQHVW skirmish  attire.  Spears,  daggers,  and  face  paint  were  the  order  of  the  day.  A  high  noon  stand-off  ensued.  Spirits  were  high.  Lots  of  shouting  DQG JHVWLFXODWLQJ ,Q VKRUW D ÂżQH VNLUPLVK 6SLWWOH Ă€HZ IURP PRXWKV as  anger  was  vented.  Egos  were  placated  under  the  blazing  hot  sun. Â

GOD  IS  REAL! HERE’S  MY  STORY

But  then  alas  something  happened  which  threatened  to  ruin  this  perfect  skirmish.  Some  idiot  threw  D VSHDU ,W Ă€HZ WKURXJK WKH DLU DQG embedded  itself  in  the  thigh  of  an  adversary.   There  was  a  moment  of  hushed  panic.   Would  this  precipitate  a  full  scale  war.   No.  The  skirmish  spirit  was  maintained.  The  culprit  was  dragged  away  and  given  a  right  good  bollocking.  By  all  accounts  the  rest  of  the  villagers  disbanded  and  went  down  to  the  pub  for  a  grand  old  knees  up.  Now  this  is  the  way  to  settle  differences. So  Mr/Mrs  Government,  if  you  are  reading  this  whilst  relaxing  at  the  beach,  please  refrain  from  starting  a  scrap.  And  if  you  really  have  to,  make  sure  it  is  a  skirmish,  with  no  loss  of  life  and  certainly  with  the  opportunity  for  all  parties  to  get  together  afterwards  to  discuss‌‌‌â€?Bloody  hell,  what  was  that  all  that  about?â€?

I was born here in Raglan where my parents were farming at Waitetuna. We left when I was seven but I loved to come back for holidays. From an early age I had a dream of being a missionary in India. After training as a physiotherapist, working a few years in Tauranga, and studying at Faith Bible College, I joined The Leprosy Mission and went to India. That makes it all sound very easy, but during those years both my parents died and it was only my faith in God that gave me strength to follow my dream. The Bible says that nothing can separate us from the love of God. This was my experience as I adjusted to living alone in a foreign land. For three years I worked in Leprosy Hospitals in India training physiotherapy technicians and treating patients. Then visa regulation changes meant that I was

not able to continue working there. I spent the following twelve years in Nepal and Bangladesh continuing to train and equip locals to do the work, and gradually working myself out of a job. In 1996 I came back to NZ and married Bruce Gavin, returning to the place where my life started. The many changes I’ve experienced in life and the many places I’ve lived have reinforced the truth that nothing can separate us from God’s love and that the only relationship which lasts forever is the relationship we can have with this God who loves us more than we can imagine. Over recent years I have trained as a Christian Spiritual Director and have been ordained a priest in the Anglican Church where it is now my privilege to be part of the shared ministry team in Raglan. .DWKOHHQ *DYLQ

This  1911  postcard  of  Opotoru  Bay  is  in  the  museum  collection  (now  in  the  centre  of  the  photo).  It  was  three  years  before  the  walkway  was  dug  into  the  cliff  and  long  before  the  footbridge  was  built  in  1929. On  top  of  the  cliff  are  the  1883  beacon  and  the  police  station  built  in  1907-8,  but  moved  to  the  corner  of  Robertson  St  in  the  1960s. A  kerosene  street  lamp  was  on  the  corner  of  Stewart  St  and  next  to  it  the  1895  Congregational  Church,  which  has  been  the  Union  Church  since  1943.  In  1956  it  was  hidden  from  this  angle  by  a  QHZ ¿UH VWDWLRQ DQG LV DJDLQ KLGGHQ E\ the  2011  museum.

Up  Stewart  St  from  the  church  is  the  Headmaster’s  house,  built  In  1903  by  J.  Rowe  as  a  5  room  residence  for  £495.
