St. John’s volunteers honoured with service medals
A new monthly art group ‘Art for Arts Sake’ will be starting at the Old School Arts Centre on Tuesday 6th March. Focusing on encouraging each other and having a good time, coordinator Ro Fawcett says “ It’s really an opportunity for like minds to get together and get inspired by each other.”
Last Sunday 12 February saw Andrea Gilshnan and Jan Tapp each receive a Service Medal of the Order of St John recognising the 12 years of service that they have contributed to the organisation. 5"4*),# !-# ,# ='+0"&))*#5:(0+,"%)# $/1%)*# '"# &2)# 7,6+,"# Station as well as a member of the Area Committee. Mrs Tapp was admitted to the Order as a Member in 2011. The awards were presented to the women at St Columba’s Catholic Church in Hamilton by Brent Neilsen, Commander of the Order of St John. A bubbly retiree, Ro has previously run art groups in Pukekohe and Naike where she lived before moving into her summer house in Raglan last year. “When we were living out at the farm we would always tell ourselves that ‘one day we’ll be able to get out there [Raglan],’ now that we’re here, it’s super – we love it,” says Ro. While she shies away from calling herself an artist, Ro is a passionate painter exhibiting her works at places like the ArtsPost in Hamilton, Thornton Gallery and Franklin Art Centre as well as our own Town Hall. “I used to run a similar group in Naike. Being a rural area, a lot of the people didn’t have much contact with other people so it was great to get together. Someone would bring cake and tea – we had so much fun,”

Over more recent years Dr Rebekah and Dr Mike were invited into partnership with the practice and now Fiona feels it is the right time to devote more of her energy to her family. Rebekah is due to return to work in early May and Mike will continue to be working with temporary doctors drafted in to ease the workload during this busy period. Many will have met Dr Angela Glew and she will be continuing to cover Rebekah’s maternity leave. Fiona will be working 2 days per week in the surgery (Tuesdays and Fridays) and is happy to see her “regulars”
during this time although will not be taking on new patients. Dr Charlotte Cave will be joining the clinic as a registrar this week and is looking forward to working in our vibrant and friendly little town. We also have Dr Amanda Mutton working with us from her base in Rotorua until the end of March. With many holiday makers in Raglan as usual this summer West Coast health would like to thank the Raglan residents for being patient (excuse the pun) during this busy period and would like to announce that to facilitate the towns growing population they will be opening for extended hours in the near future. With Fiona going part time we have taken this opportunity to increase our total number of appointments available for both doctors and nurses 8!&2#&2)#2'3)#&2,&#3)'3+)#8!++#1"4#!&#),-!)*#&'#6)&#,33'!"&:)"&-@# particularly when booked in advance. Just a quick reminder to people that if you are unwell and there are no doctor appointments available on the day you are always able to see one of our nurses who will assess you and give advice and if a doctor’s appointment is required at that time then you will ()#1&&)4#!"#,-#,"#):)*6)"%.B We are open 5 days/week and after hours you are still able to call our telephone number and are connected to a registered nurse who can give you advice and help on any problem. Mike and Fiona both do shifts at Anglesea clinic in town to cover some of the after hours requirements. We have recently started making plans for expansion of the clinic and this will involve us moving to a purpose built facility, still based in the centre of town. This is an exciting prospect and we look forward to giving you more details in the future.
